Quantum phases of $sp^2$-orbital bosonic gases in a hexagonal lattice

Orbital degree of freedom plays an important role for understanding quantum many-body phenomena. In this work, we study an experimentally related setup with ultracold bosons loaded into hybridized bands of two-dimensional hexagonal optical lattices. We find that the system supports various quantum many-body phases at zero temperature, including chiral superfluid and chiral Mott insulator by breaking time-reversal symmetry, and time-reversal-even insulating phase, based on dynamical mean-field theory. To explain the time-reversal-even phase, a fourth-order orbital-exchange model is derived to explain the underlying mechanics. To relate to experimental situations, we make band-structure calculations to obtain the Hubbard parameters, and show that these orbital ordering phases persist also in the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping.

Emergent Orbital Skyrmion Lattice in a Triangular Atom Array

Multi-orbital optical lattices have been attracting rapidly growing research interests in the last several years, providing fascinating opportunities for orbital-based quantum simulations. Here, we consider bosonic atoms loaded in the degenerate $p$-orbital bands of a two-dimensional triangular optical lattice. This system is described by a multi-orbital Bose-Hubbard model. We find the confined atoms in this system develop spontaneous orbital polarization, which forms a chiral Skyrmion lattice pattern in a large regime of the phase diagram. This is in contrast to its spin analogue which largely requires spin-orbit couplings. The emergence of the Skyrmion lattice is confirmed in both bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (BDMFT) and exact diagonalization (ED) calculations. By analyzing the quantum tunneling induced orbital-exchange interaction in the strong interaction limit, we find the Skyrmion lattice state arises due to the interplay of $p$-orbital symmetry and the geometric frustration of the triangular lattice. We provide experimental consequences of the orbital Skyrmion state, that can be readily tested in cold atom experiments. Our study implies orbital-based quantum simulations could bring exotic scenarios unexpected from their spin analogue.

Quantum phases of spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupled bosonic gases in optical lattices

Spin-orbit coupling plays an important role in understanding exotic quantum phases. In this work, we present a scheme to combine spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM) coupling and strong correlations in ultracold atomic gases. Essential ingredients of this setting is the interplay of SOAM coupling and Raman-induced spin-flip hopping, engineered by lasers that couples different hyperfine spin states. In the presence of SOAM coupling only, we find rich quantum phases in the Mott-insulating regime, which support different types of spin defects such as spin vortex and composite vortex with antiferromagnetic core surrounded by the outer spin vortex. Based on an effective exchange model, we find that these competing spin textures are a result of the interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Heisenberg exchange interactions. In the presence of both SOAM coupling and Raman-induced spin-flip hopping, more many-body phases appear, including canted-antiferromagnetic and stripe phases. Our prediction suggests that SOAM coupling could induce rich exotic many-body phases in the strongly interacting regime.

Controlling higher-orbital quantum phases of ultracold atoms via coupling to optical cavities

Orbital degree of freedom plays an important role in understanding exotic phenomena of strongly correlated materials. We study strongly correlated ultracold bosonic gases coupled to a high-finesse cavity, pumped by a blue-detuned laser in the transverse direction. Based on an extended Bose-Hubbard model with parameters adapted to recent experiments, we find that by tuning the reflection of pump laser, atoms can be selectively transferred to the odd-parity $p$-orbital, or to even-parity $d$-orbital band of a two-dimensional square lattice, accompanied with cavity-photon excitations. By interacting with cavity field, atoms self-organize to form stable higher-orbital superfluid and Mott-insulating phases with orbital-density waves, as a result of cavity induced orbital-flip processes. Our study opens the route to manipulate orbital degrees of freedom in strongly correlated quantum gases via coupling to optical cavities.

Spin-Induced Orbital Frustration in a Hexagonal Optical Lattice

Complex lattices provide a versatile ground for fascinating quantum many-body physics. Here, we propose an exotic mechanics for generating orbital frustration in hexagonal lattices. We study two-component (pseudospin-$1/2$) Bose gases in $p$-orbital bands of two-dimensional hexagonal lattices, and find that the system exhibits previously untouched orbital frustration as a result of the interplay of spin and orbital degrees of freedom, in contrast to normal Ising-type orbital ordering of spinless $p$-orbital band bosons in two-dimensional hexagonal lattices. Based on the classification by symmetry analysis, we find the interplay of orbital frustration and strong interaction leads to exotic Mott and superfluid phases with spin-orbital intertwined orders, in spite of the complete absence of spin-orbital interaction in the Hamiltonian. Our study implies many-body correlations in a multi-orbital setting could induce rich spin-orbital intertwined physics in complex lattice structures.

Stabilization with Closed-loop DOA Enlargement: An Interval Analysis Approach

In this paper, the stabilization problem with closed-loop domain of attraction (DOA) enlargement for discrete-time general nonlinear plants is solved. First, a sufficient condition for asymptotic stabilization and estimation of the closed-loop DOA is given. It shows that, for a given Lyapunov function, the negative-definite and invariant set in the state-control space is a stabilizing controller set and its projection along the control space to the state space can be an estimate of the closed-loop DOA. Then, an algorithm is proposed to approximate the negative-definite and invariant set for the given Lyapunov function, in which an interval analysis algorithm is used to find an inner approximation of sets as precise as desired. Finally, a solvable optimization problem is formulated to enlarge the estimate of the closed-loop DOA by selecting an appropriate Lyapunov function from a positive-definite function set. The proposed method try to find a unstructured controller set (namely, the negative-definite and invariant set) in the state-control space rather than design parameters of a structured controller in traditional synthesis methods.

Interval-driven discrete-time general nonlinear robust control: stabilization with closed-loop robust DOA enlargement

This paper presents new results that allow one to address the discrete-time general nonlinear robust control problem. The uncertain system is described by a general nonlinear function set characterized by the nominal model and the corresponding modeling error bound. Traditional synthesis methods design parameters of a structured robust controller. The key aim of this paper is to find an unstructured robust controller set in the state-control space, which enlarges the estimate of the closed-loop robust domain of attraction (RDOA). Based on the interval analysis arithmetic, a numerical method to estimate the unstructured robust controller set is proposed and the rigorous convergence analysis is given. The existing RDOA results are constrained by the level-set of the Lyapunov function, whereas the results in this paper remove this limitation. Furthermore, a solvable optimization problem is formulated so the estimate of RDOA is enlarged by selecting a Lyapunov function from a Lyapunov function set of sum-of-squares polynomials. The method is then validated by a specific case simulation study and results show more extensive RDOA than the previous methods.

Flat-band localization in Creutz superradiance lattices

Flat bands play an important role in diffraction-free photonics and attract fundamental interest in many-body physics. Here we report the engineering of flat-band localization of collective excited states of atoms in Creutz superradiance lattices with tunable synthetic gauge fields. Magnitudes and phases of the lattice hopping coefficients can be independently tuned to control the state components of the flat band and the Aharonov-Bohm phases. We can selectively excite the flat band and control the flat-band localization with the synthetic gauge field. Our study provides a room-temperature platform for flat bands of atoms and holds promising applications in exploring correlated topological materials.

Magnetisms of spinor alkali and alkaline-earth atoms in optical lattices

We theoretically investigate zero-temperature magnetic ordering of mixtures of spin-1 (alkali atoms) and spin-0 (alkaline-earth atoms) bosons in a three-dimensional optical lattice. With the single-mode approximation for the spin-1 bosons, we obtain an effective Bose-Hubbard model for describing the heteronuclear mixtures in optical lattices. By controlling the interspecies interactions between alkali and alkaline-earth atoms, we map out complete phase diagrams of the system with both positive and negative spin-dependent interactions for spin-1 atoms, based on bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the spin-1 components feature ferromagnetic and nematic insulating phases, in addition to the superfluid, depending on spin-dependent interactions. Take the spin-1 alkali bosons as spin $\uparrow$, and spin-0 alkaline-earth bosons as spin $\downarrow$, we observe that the system favors ferromagnetic insulator at filling $n=1$, and unorder insulator at $n=2$. Interestingly, we observe a two-step Mott-insulating-superfluid phase transition, as a result of mass imbalance between alkali and alkaline-earth atoms.

Many-body chiral edge currents and sliding phases of atomic spinwaves in momentum-space lattice

Collective excitations (spinwaves) of long-lived atomic hyperfine states can be synthesized into a Bose-Hubbard model in momentum space. We explore many-body ground states and dynamics of a two-leg momentum-space lattice formed by two coupled hyperfine states. Essential ingredients of this setting are a staggered artificial magnetic field engineered by lasers that couple the spinwave states, and a state-dependent long-range interaction, which is induced by laser-dressing a hyperfine state to a Rydberg state. The Rydberg dressed two-body interaction gives rise to a state-dependent blockade in momentum space, and can amplify staggered flux induced anti-chiral edge currents in the many-body ground state in the presence of magnetic flux. When the Rydberg dressing is applied to both hyperfine states, exotic sliding insulating and superfluid/supersolid phases emerge. Due to the Rydberg dressed long-range interaction, spinwaves slide along a leg of the momentum-space lattice without costing energy. Our study paves a route to the quantum simulation of topological phases and exotic dynamics with interacting spinwaves of atomic hyperfine states in momentum-space lattice.

Quench dynamics of Rydberg-dressed bosons on two-dimensional square lattices

We study the dynamics of bosonic atoms on a two-dimensional square lattice, where atomic interactions are long-ranged with either a box or soft-core shape. The latter can be realized through laser dressing ground-state atoms to electronically excited Rydberg states. When the range of interactions is equal or larger than the lattice constant, the system is governed by an extended Bose-Hubbard model. We propose a quench process by varying the atomic hopping linearly across phase boundaries of the Mott insulator-supersolid and supersolid-superfluid phases. Starting from a Mott insulating state, the dynamical evolution of the superfluid order parameter exhibits a universal behaviour at the early stage, largely independent of interactions. The dynamical evolution is significantly altered by strong, long-range interactions at later times. Particularly, we demonstrate that density wave excitation is important when the quench rate is small. Moreover, we show that the quench dynamics can be analyzed through time-of-flight images, i.e., measuring the momentum distribution and noise correlations.

Data-Driven Robust Stabilization with RobustDomain of Attraction Estimate for Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems

Nonlinear robust control is pursued by overcoming the drawback of linear robust control that it ignores available information about existing nonlinearities and the resulting controllers may be too conservative, especially when the nonlinearities are significant. However, most existing nonlinear robust control approaches just consider the affine nonlinear nominal model and thereby ignore available information about existing non-affine nonlinearities. When the general nonlinear nominal model is considered, the robust domain of attraction (RDOA) of closed-loops requires extensive investigation because it is hard to achieve the global stabilization. In this paper, we propose a new nonlinear robust control method based on Lyapunov function to stabilize a discrete-time uncertain system and to estimate the RDOA of closed-loops. First, a sufficient condition for robust stabilization of all plants in a plant set and estimation of the RDOA of all closed-loops is proposed. Then, to tackle the non-affine nonlinearities, a data-driven method of estimating the robust negative-definite domains (RNDD) is presented, and based on it the estimation of the RDOA of closed-loops and the resulting controller design are also given.

Data-Driven Robust Stabilization with Robust DOA Enlargement for Nonlinear Systems

Most of nonlinear robust control methods just consider the affine nonlinear nominal model. When the nominal model is assumed to be affine nonlinear, available information about existing non-affine nonlinearities is ignored. For non-affine nonlinear system, Li et al. (2019) proposes a new nonlinear control method to solve the robust stabilization problem with estimation of the robust closed-loop DOA (Domain of attraction). However, Li et al. (2019) assumes that the Lyapunov function is given and does not consider the problem of finding a good Lyapunov function to enlarge the estimate of the robust closed-loop DOA. The motivation of this paper is to enlarge the estimate of the closed-loop DOA by selecting an appropriate Lyapunov function. To achieve this goal, a solvable optimization problem is formulated to select an appropriate Lyapunov function from a parameterized positive-definite function set. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified by numerical results.

Automatic phase space generation for Monte Carlo calculations of Intensity Modulated Particle Therapy

Monte Carlo (MC) is generally considered as the most accurate dose calculation tool for particle therapy. However, a proper description of the beam particles kinematics is a necessary input for a realistic simulation. Such a description can be stored in phase space (PS) files for different beam energies. A PS file contains kinetic information such as energies, positions and travelling directions for particles traversing a plane perpendicular to the beam direction. The accuracy of PS files play a critical role in the performance of the MC method for dose calculations. A PS file can be generated with a set of parameters describing analytically the beam kinematics. However, determining such parameters can be tedious and time consuming. Thus, we have developed an algorithm to obtain those parameters automatically and efficiently. In this paper, we present such an algorithm and compare dose calculations using PS automatically generated for the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center (SPHIC) with measurements. The gamma-index for comparing calculated depth dose distributions (DDD) with measurements are above 96.0% with criterion 0.6%/0.6 mm. For each single energy, the mean difference percentage between calculated lateral spot sizes at 5 different depths and measurements are below 3.5%.

Coherent driving \emph{versus} decoherent dissipation in double inner-shell ionizations of neon atoms by attosecond pulses

Exchange correlation plays an important role in double-ionization of complex atoms by ultrashort laser pulse. In this work, we investigate two-photon double inner-shell electron ionization of neon induced by an attosecond extreme ultraviolent pulse in the framework of the quantum master equation. Our simulations reveal a distinct non-sequential effect via broadened double peaks, as a result of energy sharing between the two ionized electrons. When dissipation is included to show the interplay of coherence and decoherence, the two-photon double-ionization scaling law breaks down. We further study the total cross section of $2s^2$ double ionization as a function of photon energy in both $non$-$sequential$ and $sequential$ regions.

Phase diagrams and multistep condensations of spin-1 bosonic gases in optical lattices

Motivated by recent experimental processes, we systemically investigate strongly correlated spin-1 ultracold bosons trapped in a three-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field. Based on a recently developed bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (BDMFT), we map out complete phase diagrams of the system for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions, where various phases are found as a result of the interplay of spin-dependent interaction and quadratic Zeeman energy. For antiferromagnetic interactions, the system demonstrates competing magnetic orders, including nematic, spin-singlet and ferromagnetic insulating phase, depending on longitudinal magnetization, whereas, for ferromagnetic case, a ferromagnetic-to-nematic-insulating phase transition is observed for small quadratic Zeeman energy, and the insulating phase demonstrates the nematic order for large Zeeman energy. Interestingly, at low magnetic field and finite temperature, we find an abnormal multi-step condensation of the strongly correlated superfluid, i.e. the critical condensing temperature of the $m_F=-1$ component with antiferromagnetic interactions demonstrates an increase with longitudinal magnetization, while, for ferromagnetic case, the Zeeman component $m_F = 0$ demonstrates a local minimum for the critical condensing temperature, in contrast to weakly interacting cases.

Rotation-symmetry-enforced coupling of spin and angular momentum for p-orbital bosons

Intrinsic spin angular-momentum coupling of an electron has a relativistic quantum origin with the coupling arising from charged-orbits, which does not carry over to charge-neutral atoms. Here we propose a mechanism of spontaneous generation of spin angular-momentum coupling with spinor atomic bosons loaded into $p$-orbital bands of a two-dimensional optical-lattice. This spin angular-momentum coupling originates from many-body correlations and spontaneous symmetry breaking in a superfluid, with the key ingredients attributed to spin-channel quantum fluctuations and an approximate rotation symmetry. The resultant spin angular-momentum intertwined superfluid has Dirac excitations. In presence of a chemical potential difference for adjacent sites, it provides a bosonic analogue of a symmetry-protected-topological insulator. Through a dynamical mean-field calculation, this novel superfluid is found to be a generic low-temperature phase, and it gives way to Mott localization only at strong interactions and even-integer fillings. We show the temperature to reach this order is accessible with present experiments.

Heteronuclear magnetisms with ultracold spinor bosonic gases in optical lattices

Motivated by recent realizations of spin-1 NaRb mixtures in the experiments, here we investigate heteronuclear magnetism in the Mott-insulating regime. Different from the identical mixtures where the boson (fermion) statistics only admits even (odd) parity states from angular momentum composition, for heteronuclear atoms in principle all angular momentum states are allowed, which can give rise to new magnetic phases. Various magnetic phases can be developed over these degenerate spaces, however, the concrete symmetry breaking phases depend not only on the degree of degeneracy, but also the competitions from many-body interactions. We unveil these rich phases using the bosonic dynamical mean-field theory approach. These phases are characterized by various orders, including spontaneous magnetization order, spin magnitude order, singlet pairing order and nematic order, which may coexist, especially in the regime with odd parity. Finally we address the possible parameter regimes for observing these spin-ordered Mott phases.
