Minimizing the Pretraining Gap: Domain-aligned Text-Based Person Retrieval

In this work, we focus on text-based person retrieval, which identifies individuals based on textual descriptions. Despite advancements enabled by synthetic data for pretraining, a significant domain gap, due to variations in lighting, color, and viewpoint, limits the effectiveness of the pretrain-finetune paradigm. To overcome this issue, we propose a unified pipeline incorporating domain adaptation at both image and region levels. Our method features two key components: Domain-aware Diffusion (DaD) for image-level adaptation, which aligns image distributions between synthetic and real-world domains, e.g., CUHK-PEDES, and Multi-granularity Relation Alignment (MRA) for region-level adaptation, which aligns visual regions with descriptive sentences, thereby addressing disparities at a finer granularity. This dual-level strategy effectively bridges the domain gap, achieving state-of-the-art performance on CUHK-PEDES, ICFG-PEDES, and RSTPReid datasets. The dataset, model, and code are available at https://github.com/Shuyu-XJTU/MRA.

Magneto-photoelectrochemical 2D heterojunction platform for biosensing detection

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors exhibit significant potential for biomolecule detection due to their high sensitivity and low background noise. However, their performance is severely constrained by the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. This study innovatively introduces a non-contact magnetic modulation strategy to suppress electron-hole recombination by manipulating carrier spin states, thereby significantly enhancing photoelectric conversion efficiency. Building on this mechanism, we developed a novel magnetically modulated PEC biosensing platform based on the MXenes/cobalt-doped titanium dioxide (Co-TiO2) heterostructure. This platform achieved ultrasensitive detection of protein kinase A (PKA) activity. Compared to an identical probe-modified biosensor without magnetic field application, the developed platform demonstrated a 68.75% enhancement in detection sensitivity and achieved an ultralow detection limit for PKA of 0.00016 U/mL. It also exhibited a wide linear range from 0.005 to 80 U/mL. This research not only provides a novel methodology for kinase activity analysis but also pioneers the innovative strategy of magnetic modulation for enhanced PEC sensing. It opens new avenues for developing high-performance biosensing platforms, holding significant promise for early disease diagnosis and drug screening applications.

On Exploring and Improving Robustness of Scene Text Detection Models

It is crucial to understand the robustness of text detection models with regard to extensive corruptions, since scene text detection techniques have many practical applications. For systematically exploring this problem, we propose two datasets from which to evaluate scene text detection models: ICDAR2015-C (IC15-C) and CTW1500-C (CTW-C). Our study extends the investigation of the performance and robustness of the proposed region proposal, regression and segmentation-based scene text detection frameworks. Furthermore, we perform a robustness analysis of six key components: pre-training data, backbone, feature fusion module, multi-scale predictions, representation of text instances and loss function. Finally, we present a simple yet effective data-based method to destroy the smoothness of text regions by merging background and foreground, which can significantly increase the robustness of different text detection networks. We hope that this study will provide valid data points as well as experience for future research. Benchmark, code and data will be made available at \url{https://github.com/wushilian/robust-scene-text-detection-benchmark}.
