New area-minimizing Lawson-Osserman cones

It has been 40 years since Lawson and Osserman introduced the three minimal cones associated with Dirichlet problems in their 1977 Acta paper [LO77]. The first cone was shown area-minimizing by Harvey and Lawson in the celebrated paper [HL82]. In this paper, we confirm that the other two are also area-minimizing. In fact, we show that every Lawson-Osserman cone of type (n, p, 2) constructed in [XYZ] is area-minimizing.

Experimental generalized contextuality with single-photon qubits

Contextuality is a phenomenon at the heart of the quantum mechanical departure from classical behaviour, and has been recently identified as a resource in quantum computation. Experimental demonstration of contextuality is thus an important goal. The traditional form of contextuality -- as violation of a Kochen-Specker inequality -- requires a quantum system with at least three levels, and the status of the assumption of determinism used in deriving those inequalities has been controversial. By considering `unsharp' observables, Liang, Spekkens and Wiseman (LSW) derived an inequality for generalized noncontextual models that doesn't assume determinism, and applies already to a qubit. We experimentally implement the LSW test using the polarization states of a heralded single photon and three unsharp binary measurements. We violate the LSW inequality by more than 16 standard deviations, thus showing that our results cannot be reproduced by a noncontextual subset of quantum theory.

On Lawson-Osserman Constructions

Lawson-Osserman constructed three types of non-parametric minimal cones of high codimensions based on Hopf maps between spheres, which correspond to Lipschitz but non-differentiable solutions to the minimal surface equations, thereby making sharp contrast to the regularity theorem for minimal graphs of codimension 1. In this paper, we develop the constructions in a more general scheme. Once a mapping f between unit spheres is composited of a harmonic Riemannian submersion and a homothetic (i.e., up to a constant factor, isometric) minimal immersion, certain twisted graph of f can yield a non-parametric minimal cone. Because the choices of the second component usually form a huge moduli space, our constructions produce a constellation of uncountably many examples. For each such cone, there exists an entire minimal graph whose tangent cone at infinity is just the given one. Moreover, new phenomena on the existence, non-uniqueness and non-minimizing of solutions to the related Dirichlet problem are discovered.

On Lawson's area-minimizing hypercones

We show the area-minimality property of all homogeneous area-minimizing hypercones in Euclidean spaces (classified by Lawlor) following Lawson's original idea in his 72' Trans. A.M.S. paper "The equivariant Plateau problem and interior regularity". Moreover, each of them enjoys (coflat) calibrations singular only at the origin.

Experimental investigation of the stronger uncertainty relations for all incompatible observables

The Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty relation quantitatively expresses the impossibility of jointly sharp preparation of incompatible observables. However it does not capture the concept of incompatible observables because it can be trivial even for two incompatible observables. We experimentally demonstrate the new stronger uncertainty relations proposed by Maccone and Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 260401 (2014)] relating on that sum of variances are valid in a state-dependent manner and the lower bound is guaranteed to be nontrivial for two observables being incompatible on the state of the system being measured. The behaviour we find agrees with the predictions of quantum theory and obeys the new uncertainty relations even for the special states which trivialize Heisenberg-Robertson relation. We realize a direct measurement model and give the first experimental investigation of the strengthened relations.

Dynamical spin-density waves in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Synthetic spin-orbit (SO) coupling, an important ingredient for quantum simulation of many exotic condensed matter physics, has recently attracted considerable attention. The static and dynamic properties of a SO coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) have been extensively studied in both theory and experiment. Here we numerically investigate the generation and propagation of a \textit{dynamical} spin-density wave (SDW) in a SO coupled BEC using a fast moving Gaussian-shaped barrier. We find that the SDW wavelength is sensitive to the barrier's velocity while varies slightly with the barrier's peak potential or width. We qualitatively explain the generation of SDW by considering a rectangular barrier in a one dimensional system. Our results may motivate future experimental and theoretical investigations of rich dynamics in the SO coupled BEC induced by a moving barrier.

On Extending Calibrations

This is a companion note of [Zhaa] (arXiv:1501.01836) where the extension of local calibration pairs of smooth submanifolds is discussed. Here we emphasize on the case of singular submanifolds. More precisely, we study when a calibration pair around the singular set of a submanifold can extend to a local calibration pair about the entire submanifold. Based upon [Zhab] (arXiv:1501.04681) several examples of particular interests under the view of calibrated geometry are considered.

How to construct metrics to control distributions of homologically mass-minimizing currents

By Federer and Fleming there exist at least one mass-minimizing normal current in every real-valued homology class of a Riemannian manifold. However the regularity of the mass-minimizing currents and their distributions may generally be quite complicated. In this paper we shall study how to construct nice metrics so that (as functionals over smooth forms) almost all homologically mass-minimizing currents are just linear combinations over smooth submanifolds.

Non-Markovian Decoherent Quantum Walks

Quantum walk acts obviously different from its classical counterpart, but decoherence will lessen and close the gap between them. To understand this process, it is necessary to investigate the evolution of quantum walk under different situation of decoherence. In this article, we study a non-Markovian decoherent quantum walk on a line. In the short time regime, the behavior of the walk deviates from both idea quantum walks and classical random walks. The position variance as a measure of quantum walk starts oscillating from the first several steps and tends to be linear on time and showing a diffusive spread in the long time limit, which is caused by the non-Markovian dephasing affecting on quantum correlations between quantum walker and his coin. We also study both quantum discord and measurement-induced disturbance as measures of quantum correlations and observe that both of them oscillate in the short time regime and tend to be zero in the long time limit. Therefore quantum walk with non-Markovian decoherence tends to diffusive spreading behavior in the long time limit, while in the short time regime it oscillates between a ballistic and diffusive spreading behavior, and the quantum correlation collapses and revivals due to the memory effect.

First-principles statistical mechanics approach to step decoration at surfaces

Using a first-principles parameterized lattice-gas Hamiltonian we study the adsorbate ordering behavior at atomic steps of a Pd(100) surface exposed to an oxygen environment. We identify a wide range of gas-phase conditions comprising near atmospheric pressures and elevated temperatures around 900 K, in which the step is decorated by a characteristic O zigzag arrangement. For catalytic processes like the high-temperature combustion of methane that operate under these conditions our approach thus provides first insight into the structure and composition at a prominent defect on the working surface.

Unitary transformations can be identified locally

We show that in principle, $N$-partite unitary transformations can be perfectly discriminated under local measurement and classical communication (LOCC) despite of their nonlocal properties. Based on this result, some related topics, including the construction of the appropriate quantum circuit together with the extension to general completely positive trace preserving operations, are discussed.

On the accuracy of first-principles lateral interactions: Oxygen at Pd(100)

We employ a first-principles lattice-gas Hamiltonian (LGH) approach to determine the lateral interactions between O atoms adsorbed on the Pd(100) surface. With these interactions we obtain an ordering behavior at low coverage that is in quantitative agreement with experimental data. Uncertainties in the approach arise from the finite LGH expansion and from the approximate exchange-correlation (xc) functional underlying the employed density-functional theory energetics. We carefully scrutinize these uncertainties and conclude that they primarily affect the on-site energy, which rationalizes the agreement with the experimental critical temperatures for the order-disorder transition. We also investigate the validity of the frequently applied assumption that the ordering energies can be represented by a sum of pair terms. Restricting our LGH expansion to just pairwise lateral interactions, we find that this results in effective interactions which contain spurious contributions that are of equal size, if not larger than any of the uncertainties e.g. due to the approximate xc functional.

Density-functional theory investigation of oxygen adsorption at Pd(11N)(N=3,5,7) vicinal surfaces

We present a density-functional theory study addressing the on-surface adsorption of oxygen at the Pd(11N) (N =3,5,7) vicinal surfaces, which exhibit (111) steps and (100) terraces of increasing width. We find the binding to be predominantly governed by the local coordination at the adsorption site. This leads to very similar bonding properties at the threefold step sites of all three vicinal surfaces, while the binding at the central fourfold hollow site in the four atomic row terrace of Pd(117) is already very little disturbed by the presence of the neighboring steps.
