Thermal Interpretation of Schwinger Effect in Near-Extremal RN Black Hole

We propose a thermal interpretation of the Schwinger effect for charged scalars and spinors in an extremal and near-extremal Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole. The emission of charges has the distribution with an effective temperature determined by the Davies-Unruh temperature for accelerating charges by the electric field and the scalar curvature of AdS_2 from the near-horizon geometry AdS_2 X S^2. We find a charge bound for the extremal micro black hole to remain stable against the Schwinger emission in analogy with the Breitenlohlner-Freedman bound for the AdS space. In the in-out formalism we find the one-loop QED effective action consistent with the vacuum persistence and interpret the vacuum persistence as the leading Schwinger effect and the effect of a charged vacuum of the Coulomb field.

Exact Cosmological Solutions of 4D String Gravity in the String Frame

We have discussed a particular class of exact cosmological solutions of the 4-dimensional low energy string gravity in the string frame. In the vacuum without matter and the 2-form fields, the exact cosmological solutions always give monotonically shrinking universes if the dilaton field is not a constant. However, in the presence of the 2-form fields and/or the radiation-like fluid in the string frame, the exact cosmological solutions show a minimum size of the universe in the evolution, but with an initial cosmological curvature singularity in the string frame.

Pair Production of Majorana Neutrinos by Annihilation of Charged Particles in High Energy Collision

Assuming that neutrinos have non-vanishing magnetic moments, we discuss the possibility of pair production through annihilation of charged fermions in high-energy collisions. Adopting the Pauli interaction for photon-neutrino coupling, we calculate the neutrino pair production cross section in the photon channel and compare the result with the standard model in $ Z^{0} $ channel. we demonstrated that the enhancement of the production rate for Majorana neutrino pairs over the standard model rate can be possible at the center-of-mass energy of $10 - 100$ TeV for the Large Hadron Collider or the ultra-high-energy cosmic Ray when the transition magnetic moment is not smaller than $10^{-9} - 10^{-10} μ_B$.

Conformally Coupled Induced Gravity as an Infrared Fixed Point

We have found that the conformally coupled induced gravity can be an infrared fixed point of induced gravity with Yukawa couplings with matter. The late time cosmology with a uniform mean matter distribution can be described by the conformally coupled induced gravity, which has an emergent global conformal symmetry in the cosmic scale. Aiming to resolve the puzzles for the dark energy, we have obtained exact cosmological equations and determined the dark energy density, the matter density, and the jerk parameter in the present universe based on the recent observational cosmic expansion data for $a/H^{2}$.

Dark Energy Regulation with Approximate Emergent Conformal Symmetry

A cosmic potential which can relax the vacuum energy is proposed in a framework of scalar-tensor gravity. In the phase of the gravity scalar field around the evolution with an approximate emergent conformal symmetry, we have obtained a set of cosmological equations with the dark energy regulated to the order of a conformal anomaly parameter. Through a role of the cosmic potential, the vacuum energy which could be generated in matter Lagrangian does not contribute to the dark energy in the phase.

The Dark Energy Regulated by Emergent Conformal Symmetry

We have found a mechanism which regulates the dark energy in our universe. With an emergent conformal symmetry, the dark energy density is regulated to the order of a conformal anomaly parameter in the conformally coupled gravity. In the late time cosmological evolution, we have obtained a set of exact cosmological equations which deviate from the Friedmann equations significantly. Based on the recent observational cosmic expansion data, it is shown that the dark energy density is about 1/4 of the matter density at present, which is quite smaller than determined by General Relativity. The jerk parameter at present is also determined as a definite value 0.47.

Effective Action of QED in Electric Field Backgrounds II: Spatially Localized Fields

We find the Bogoliubov coefficient from the tunneling boundary condition on a charged particle coupled to a static electric field $E_0 sech^2 (z/L)$ and, using the regularization scheme in Phys. Rev. D 78, 105013 (2008), obtain the exact one-loop effective action in scalar and spinor QED. It is shown that the effective action satisfies the general relation between the vacuum persistence and the mean number of produced pairs. We advance an approximation method for general electric fields and show the duality between the space-dependent and time-dependent electric fields of the same form at the leading order of the effective actions.

Nonperturbative QED Effective Action at Finite Temperature

We advance a novel method for the finite-temperature effective action for nonequilibrium quantum fields and find the QED effective action in time-dependent electric fields, where charged pairs evolve out of equilibrium. The imaginary part of the effective action consists of thermal loops of the Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein distribution for the initial thermal ensemble weighted with factors for vacuum fluctuations. And the real part of the effective action is determined by the mean number of produced pairs, vacuum polarization, and thermal distribution. The mean number of produced pairs is equal to twice the imaginary part. We explicitly find the finite-temperature effective action in a constant electric field.

Schwinger Pair Production at Finite Temperature in QED

We use the evolution operator method to find the Schwinger pair-production rate at finite temperature in scalar and spinor QED by counting the vacuum production, the induced production and the stimulated annihilation from the initial ensemble. It is shown that the pair-production rate for each state is factorized into the mean number at zero temperature and the initial thermal distribution for bosons and fermions.

Effective Action of QED in Electric Field Backgrounds

We use the evolution operator method to find the one-loop effective action of scalar and spinor QED in electric field backgrounds in terms of the Bogoliubov coefficient between the ingoing and the outgoing vacua. We obtain the exact one-loop effective action for a Sauter-type electric field, E_0 sech^2 (t/tau), and show that the imaginary part correctly yields the vacuum persistence. The renormalized effective action shows the general relation between the vacuum persistence and the total mean number of created pairs for the constant and the Sauter-type electric field.

Fermion Production in Strong Magnetic Field and its Astrophysical Implications

We calculate the effective potential of a strong magnetic field induced by fermions with anomalous magnetic moments which couple to the electromagnetic field in the form of the Pauli interaction. For a uniform magnetic field, we find the explicit form of the effective potential. It is found that the non-vanishing imaginary part develops for a magnetic field stronger than a critical field and has a quartic form which is quite different from the exponential form of the Schwinger process. We also consider a linear magnetic field configuration as an example of inhomogeneous magnetic fields. We find that the imaginary part of the effective potential is nonzero even below the critical field and shows an exponentially decreasing behavior with respect to the inverse of the magnetic field gradient, which is the non-perturbative characteristics analogous to the Schwinger process. These results imply the instability of the strong magnetic field to produce fermion pairs as a purely magnetic effect. The possible applications to the astrophysical phenomena with strong magnetic field are also discussed.

Effective Potential for Uniform Magnetic Fields through Pauli Interaction

We have calculated the explicit form of the real and imaginary parts of the effective potential for uniform magnetic fields which interact with spin-1/2 fermions through the Pauli interaction. It is found that the non-vanishing imaginary part develops for a magnetic field stronger than a critical field, whose strength is the ratio of the fermion mass to its magnetic moment. This implies the instability of the uniform magnetic field beyond the critical field strength to produce fermion pairs with the production rate density $w(x)=\frac{m^{4}}{24π}(\frac{|μB|}{m}-1)^{3}(\frac{|μB|}{m}+3)$ in the presence of Pauli interaction.

Production of Neutral Fermion in Linear Magnetic Field through Pauli Interaction

We calculate the production rate of neutral fermions in linear magnetic fields through the Pauli interaction. It is found that the production rate is exponentially decreasing function with respect to the inverse of the magnetic field gradient, which shows the non-perturbative characteristics analogous to the Schwinger process. It turns out that the production rate density depends on both the gradient and the strength of magnetic fields in 3+1 dimension. It is quite different from the result in 2+1 dimension, where the production rate depends only on the gradient of the magnetic fields, not on the strength of the magnetic fields. It is also found that the production of neutral fermions through the Pauli interaction is a magnetic effect whereas the production of charged particles through minimal coupling is an electric effect.

Yang-Mills Instantons Sitting on a Ricci-flat Worldspace of Double D4-brane

Thus far, there seem to be no complete criteria that can settle the issue as to what the correct generalization of the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action, describing the low-energy dynamics of the D-branes, to the non-abelian case would be. According to recent suggestions, one might pass the issue of worldvolume solitons from abelian to non-abelian setting by considering the stack of multiple, coincident D-branes and use it as a guideline to construct or censor the relevant non-abelian version of the DBI action. In this spirit, here we are interested in the explicit construction of SU(2) Yang-Mills (YM) instanton solutions in the background geometry of two coincident probe D4-brane worldspaces particularly when the metric of target spacetime in which the probe branes are embedded is given by the Ricci-flat, magnetic extremal 4-brane solution in type IIA supergravity theory with its worldspace metric being given by that of Taub-NUT and Eguchi-Hanson solutions, the two best-known gravitational instantons. And then we demonstrate that with this YM instanton- gravitational instanton configuration on the probe D4-brane worldvolume, the energy of the probe branes attains its minimum value and hence enjoys stable state provided one employs the Tseytlin's non-abelian DBI action for the description of multiple probe D-branes. In this way, we support the arguments in the literature in favor of Tseytlin's proposal for the non-abelian DBI action.

Instanton-Meron Hybrid in the Background of Gravitational Instantons

When it comes to the topological aspects, gravity may have profound effects even at the level of particle physics despite its negligibly small relative strength well below the Planck scale. In spite of this intriguing possibility, relatively little attempt has been made toward the exhibition of this phenomenon in relevant physical systems. In the present work, perhaps the simplest and the most straightforward new algorithm for generating solutions to (anti) self-dual Yang-Mills (YM) equation in the typical gravitational instanton backgrounds is proposed and then applied to find the solutions practically in all the gravitational instantons known. Solutions thus obtained turn out to be some kind of instanton-meron hybrids possessing mixed features of both. Namely, they are rather exotic type of configurations obeying first order (anti) self-dual YM equation which are everywhere non-singular and have finite Euclidean YM actions on one hand while exhibiting meron-like large distance behavior and carrying generally fractional topological charge values on the other. Close inspection, however, reveals that the solutions are more like instantons rather than merons in their generic natures.

Yang-Mills Instantons in the Gravitational Instanton Backgrounds

The simplest and the most straightforward new algorithm for generating solutions to (anti) self-dual Yang-Mills (YM) equation in the typical gravitational instanton backgrounds is proposed. When applied to the Taub-NUT and the Eguchi-Hanson metrics, the two best-known gravitational instantons, the solutions turn out to be the rather exotic type of instanton configurations carrying finite YM action but generally fractional topological charge values.

Conformally Coupled Induced Gravity with Gradient Torsion

It is found that conformally coupled induced gravity with gradient torsion gives a dilaton gravity in Riemann geometry. In the Einstein frame of the dilaton gravity the conformal symmetry is hidden and a non-vanishing cosmological constant is not plausible due to the constraint of the conformal coupling.
