Functional acoustic metamaterial using shortcut to adiabatic passage in acoustic waveguide couplers

Shortcut to adiabatic passage (STAP), initially proposed to accelerate adiabatic quantum state transfer, has been widely explored and applied in quantum optics and integrated optics. Here we bring STAP into the field of acoustics to design compact couplers and functional metamaterial. The space-varying coupling strengths of acoustic waveguides (WGs) are tailored by means of dressed states in a three-level system, accounting for the desirable acoustic energy transfer among three WGs with short length. We show that the acoustic coupler has one-way feature when loss is introduced into the intermediate WG. More uniquely, when the propagation of acoustic wave is designed to mimic a Hadamard transformation, an acoustic metamaterial can be constructed by arraying several couplers, possessing the beam-splitting function and unidirectional, broadband performances. Our work bridges STAP and the acoustic coupler as well as metamaterial, which may have profound impacts on exploring quantum technologies for promoting advanced acoustic devices.

Systematic error tolerant multiqubit holonomic entangling gates

Quantum holonomic gates hold built-in resilience to local noises and provide a promising approach for implementing fault-tolerant quantum computation. We propose to realize high-fidelity holonomic $(N+1)$-qubit controlled gates using Rydberg atoms confined in optical arrays or superconducting circuits. We identify the scheme, deduce the effective multi-body Hamiltonian, and determine the working condition of the multiqubit gate. Uniquely, the multiqubit gate is immune to systematic errors, i.e., laser parameter fluctuations and motional dephasing, as the $N$ control atoms largely remain in the much stable qubit space during the operation. We show that $C_N$-NOT gates can reach same level of fidelity at a given gate time for $N\leq5$ under a suitable choice of parameters, and the gate tolerance against errors in systematic parameters can be further enhanced through optimal pulse engineering. In case of Rydberg atoms, the proposed protocol is intrinsically different from typical schemes based on Rydberg blockade or antiblockade. Our study paves a new route to build robust multiqubit gates with Rydberg atoms trapped in optical arrays or with superconducting circuits. It contributes to current efforts in developing scalable quantum computation with trapped atoms and fabricable superconducting devices.

Unidirectional acoustic metamaterials based on nonadiabatic holonomic quantum transformations

Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum transformations (NHQTs) have attracted wide attention and have been applied in many aspects of quantum computation, whereas related research is usually limited to the field of quantum physics. Here we bring NHQTs into constructing a unidirectional acoustic metamaterial (UDAM) for shaping classical beams. The UDAM is made up of an array of three-waveguide couplers, where the propagation of acoustic waves mimics the evolution of NHQTs. The excellent agreement among analytical predictions, numerical simulations, and experimental measurements confirms the great applicability of NHQTs in acoustic metamaterial engineering. The present work extends research on NHQTs from quantum physics to the field of classical waves for designing metamaterials with simple structures and may pave a new way to design UDAMs that would be of potential applications in acoustic isolation, communication, and stealth.

Unselective ground-state blockade of Rydberg atoms for implementing quantum gates

A dynamics regime of Rydberg atoms, unselective ground-state blockade (UGSB), is proposed in the context of Rydberg antiblockade (RAB), where the evolution of two atoms is suppressed when they populate in an identical ground state. UGSB is used to implement a SWAP gate in one step without individual addressing of atoms. Aiming at circumventing common issues in RAB-based gates including atomic decay, Doppler dephasing, and fluctuations in the interatomic coupling strength, we modify the RAB condition to achieve a dynamical SWAP gate whose robustness is much greater than that of the nonadiabatic holonomic one in the conventional RAB regime. In addition, on the basis of the proposed SWAP gates, we further investigate the implementation of a three-atom Fredkin gate by combining Rydberg blockade and RAB. The present work may facilitate to implement the RAB-based gates of strongly coupled atoms in experiment.

Electric field induced injection and shift currents in zigzag graphene nanoribbons

We theoretically investigate the one-color injection currents and shift currents in zigzag graphene nanoribbons with applying a static electric field across the ribbon, which breaks the inversion symmetry to generate nonzero second order optical responses by dipole interaction. These two types of currents can be separately excited by specific light polarization, circularly polarized lights for injection currents and linearly polarized lights for shift currents. Based on a tight binding model formed by carbon 2p$_z$ orbitals, we numerically calculate the spectra of injection coefficients and shift conductivities, as well as their dependence on the static field strength and ribbon width. The spectra show many peaks associated with the optical transition between different subbands, and the positions and amplitudes of these peaks can be effectively controlled by the static electric field. By constructing a simple two band model, the static electric fields are found to modify the edge states in a nonperturbative way, and their associated optical transitions dominate the current generation at low photon energies. For typical parameters, such as a static field 10$^6$ V/m and light intensity 0.1 GW/cm$^2$, the magnitude of the injection and shift currents for a ribbon with width 5 nm can be as large as the order of 1 $μ$A. Our results provide a physical basis for realizing passive optoelectronic devices based on graphene nanoribbons.

Resilient quantum gates on periodically driven Rydberg atoms

Fault-tolerant implementation of quantum gates is one of preconditions for realizing quantum computation. The platform of Rydberg atoms is one of the most promising candidates for achieving quantum computation. We propose to implement a controlled-$Z$ gate on Rydberg atoms where an amplitude-modulated field is employed to induce Rydberg antiblockade. Gate robustness against the fluctuations in the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction can be largely enhanced by adjusting amplitude-modulated field. Furthermore, we introduce a Landau-Zener-Stückelberg transition on the target atom so as to improve the gate resilience to the deviation in the gate time and the drift in the pulse amplitude. With feasible experimental parameters, one can achieve the gate with low fidelity errors caused by atomic decay, interatomic dipole-dipole force, and Doppler effects. Finally, we generalize the gate scheme into multiqubit cases, where resilient multiqubit phase gates can be obtained in one step with an unchanged gate time as the number of qubits increases.

Nonlinear wavefront control by geometric-phase dielectric metasurfaces: Influence of mode field and rotational symmetry

Nonlinear Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurfaces facilitate the nontrivial phase modulation for frequency conversion processes by leveraging photon-spin dependent nonlinear geometric-phases. However, plasmonic metasurfaces show some severe limitation for nonlinear frequency conversion due to the intrinsic high ohmic loss and low damage threshold of plasmonic nanostructures. Here, we systematically study the nonlinear geometric-phases associated with the third-harmonic generation process occurring in all-dielectric metasurfaces, which are composed of silicon nanofins with different in-plane rotational symmetries. We find that the wave coupling among different field components of the resonant fundamental field gives rise to the appearance of different nonlinear geometric-phases of the generated third-harmonic signals. The experimental observations of the nonlinear beam steering and nonlinear holography realized in this work by all-dielectric geometric-phase metasurfaces are well explained with our developed theory. Our work offers a new physical picture to understand the nonlinear optical process occurring at nanoscale dielectric resonators and will help in the design of nonlinear metasurfaces with tailored phase properties.

Two-path interference for enantiomer-selective state transfer of chiral molecules

With a microwave-regime cyclic three-state configuration, an enantiomer-selective state transfer~(ESST) is carried out through the two-path interference between a direct one-photon coupling and an effective two-photon coupling. The $π$-phase difference in the one-photon process between two enantiomers makes the interference constructive for one enantiomer but destructive for the other. Therefore only one enantiomer is excited into a higher rotational state while the other remains in the ground state. The scheme is of flexibility in the pulse waveforms and the time order of two paths. We simulate the scheme in a sample of cyclohexylmethanol~(C$_7$H$_{14}$O) molecules. Simulative results show the robust and high-fidelity ESST can be obtained when experimental concerns are considered. Finally, we propose to employ the finished ESST in implementing enantio-separation and determining enantiomeric excess.

All-angle Negative Reflection with An Ultrathin Acoustic Gradient Metasurface: Floquet-Bloch Modes Perspective and Experimental Verification

Metasurface with gradient phase response offers new alternative for steering the propagation of waves. Conventional Snell's law has been revised by taking the contribution of local phase gradient into account. However, the requirement of momentum matching along the metasurface sets its nontrivial beam manipulation functionality within a limited-angle incidence. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the acoustic gradient metasurface supports the negative reflection for all-angle incidence. The mode expansion theory is developed to help understand how the gradient metasurface tailors the incident beams, and the all-angle negative reflection occurs when the first negative order Floquet-Bloch mode dominates inside the metasurface slab. The coiling-up space structures are utilized to build desired acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflections have been perfectly verified by experimental measurements. Our work offers the Floquet-Bloch modes perspective for qualitatively understanding the reflection behaviors of the acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflection characteristic possessed by acoustic gradient metasurface could enable a new degree of the acoustic wave manipulating and be applied in the functional diffractive acoustic elements, such as the all-angle acoustic back reflector.

Enhancement of coherent dipole coupling between two atoms via squeezing a cavity mode

We propose a theoretical method to enhance the coherent dipole coupling between two atoms in an optical cavity via parametrically squeezing the cavity mode. In the present scheme, conditions for coherent coupling are derived in detail and diverse dynamics of the system can be obtained by regulating system parameters. In the presence of environmental noise, an auxiliary squeezed field is employed to suppress, and even completely eliminate the additional noise induced by squeezing. In addition, we demonstrate that our scheme enables the effective suppression of atomic spontaneous emission. The results in our investigation could be used for diverse applications in quantum technologies.
