Power Control and Random Serving Mode Allocation for CJT-NCJT Hybrid Mode Enabled Cell-Free Massive MIMO With Limited Fronthauls

With a great potential of improving the service fairness and quality for user equipments (UEs), cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) has been regarded as an emerging candidate for 6G network architectures. Under ideal assumptions, the coherent joint transmission (CJT) serving mode has been considered as an optimal option for cell-free mMIMO systems, since it can achieve coherent cooperation gain among the access points. However, when considering the limited fronthaul constraint in practice, the non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) serving mode is likely to outperform CJT, since the former requires much lower fronthaul resources. In other words, the performance excellence and worseness of single serving mode (CJT or NCJT) depends on the fronthaul capacity, and any single transmission mode cannot perfectly adapt the capacity limited fronthaul. To explore the performance potential of the cell-free mMIMO system with limited fronthauls by harnessing the merits of CJT and NCJT, we propose a CJT-NCJT hybrid serving mode framework, in which UEs are allocated to operate on CJT or NCJT serving mode. To improve the sum-rate of the system with low complexity, we first propose a probability-based random serving mode allocation scheme. With a given serving mode, a successive convex approximation-based power allocation algorithm is proposed to maximize the system's sum-rate. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme.

A Recursion-Based SNR Determination Method for Short Packet Transmission: Analysis and Applications

The short packet transmission (SPT) has gained much attention in recent years. In SPT, the most significant characteristic is that the finite blocklength code (FBC) is adopted. With FBC, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) cannot be expressed as an explicit function with respect to the other transmission parameters. This raises the following two problems for the resource allocation in SPTs: (i) The exact value of the SNR is hard to determine, and (ii) The property of SNR w.r.t. the other parameters is hard to analyze, which hinders the efficient optimization of them. To simultaneously tackle these problems, we have developed a recursion method in our prior work. To emphasize the significance of this method, we further analyze the convergence rate of the recursion method and investigate the property of the recursion function in this paper. Specifically, we first analyze the convergence rate of the recursion method, which indicates it can determine the SNR with low complexity. Then, we analyze the property of the recursion function, which facilitates the optimization of the other parameters during the recursion. Finally, we also enumerate some applications for the recursion method. Simulation results indicate that the recursion method converges faster than the other SNR determination methods. Besides, the results also show that the recursion-based methods can almost achieve the optimal solution of the application cases.

QoE-based Semantic-Aware Resource Allocation for Multi-Task Networks

By transmitting task-related information only, semantic communications yield significant performance gains over conventional communications. However, the lack of mature semantic theory about semantic information quantification and performance evaluation makes it challenging to perform resource allocation for semantic communications, especially when multiple tasks coexist in the network. To cope with this challenge, we propose a quality-of-experience (QoE) based semantic-aware resource allocation method for multi-task networks in this paper. First, semantic entropy is defined to quantify the semantic information for different tasks, and the relationship between semantic entropy and Shannon entropy is analyzed. Then, we develop a novel QoE model to formulate the semantic-aware resource allocation in terms of semantic compression, channel assignment, and transmit power. The compatibility of the formulated problem with conventional communications is further demonstrated. To solve this problem, we decouple it into two subproblems and solved them by a developed deep Q-network (DQN) based method and a proposed low-complexity matching algorithm, respectively. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, as well as its compatibility with conventional communications.

Joint Power Allocation and Beamforming for Active IRS-aided Directional Modulation Network

To boost the secrecy rate (SR) of the conventional directional modulation (DM) network and overcome the double fading effect of the cascaded channels of passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), a novel active IRS-assisted DM system with a power adjusting strategy between transmitter and active IRS is proposed in this paper. Then, a joint optimization of maximizing the SR is cast by alternately optimizing the power allocation (PA) factors, transmit beamforming, receive beamforming, and reflect beamforming at IRS, subject to the power constraint at IRS. To tackle the formulated non-convex optimization problem, a high-performance scheme of maximizing SR based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and Schur complement (Max-SR-SS) is proposed, where the derivative operation are employed to optimize the PA factors, the generalized Rayleigh-Rize theorem is adopted to derive the receive beamforming, and the SCA strategy is utilized to design the transmit beamforming and phase shift matrix of IRS. To reduce the high complexity, a low-complexity scheme, named maximizing SR based on equal amplitude reflecting (EAR) and majorization-minimization (MM) (Max-SR-EM), is developed, where the EAR and MM methods are adopted to derive the amplitude and phase of the IRS phase shift matrix, respectively. In particular, when the receivers are single antenna, a scheme of maximizing SR based on alternating optimization (Max-SR-AO) is proposed, where the PA factors, transmit and reflect beamforming are derived by the fractional programming (FP) and SCA algorithms. Simulation results show that with the same power constraint, the SR gains achieved by the proposed schemes outperform those of the fixed PA and passive IRS schemes.

QoE-Aware Resource Allocation for Semantic Communication Networks

With the aim of accomplishing intelligence tasks, semantic communications transmit task-related information only, yielding significant performance gains over conventional communications. To guarantee user requirements for different types of tasks, we perform the semantic-aware resource allocation in a multi-cell multi-task network in this paper. Specifically, an approximate measure of semantic entropy is first developed to quantify the semantic information for different tasks, based on which a novel quality-of-experience (QoE) model is proposed. We formulate the QoE-aware semantic resource allocation in terms of the number of transmitted semantic symbols, channel assignment, and power allocation. To solve this problem, we first decouple it into two independent subproblems. The first one is to optimize the number of transmitted semantic symbols with given channel assignment and power allocation, which is solved by the exhaustive searching method. The second one is the channel assignment and power allocation subproblem, which is modeled as a many-to-one matching game and solved by the proposed low-complexity matching algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method on the overall QoE.

An Extended Kalman Filter for Distance Estimation and Power Control in Mobile Molecular Communication

In this paper, we consider a mobile molecular communication (MC) system consisting of two mobile nanomachines, a transmitter and a receiver, propelled by a positive drift velocity and Brownian motion in a realistic blood-vessel-type flow regime. Considering the nonlinear movement of the nanomachines, an extended Kalman filter is employed to estimate the distance from the transmitter. Furthermore, based on the predicted distance, to keep the number of received molecules for bit 1 at a stable level, we employ power control on the number of transmitted molecules based on the distance between the transmitter and the receiver and the residual molecules in the channel from the previous transmission. Finally, the optimal detection threshold is obtained by minimizing the error probability. It is verified that a fixed optimal detection threshold can be effective for the power control scheme in the mobile MC. The bit error rate (BER) performance of our scheme is verified via simulation results.

Resource allocation for text semantic communications

Semantic communications have shown its great potential to improve the transmission reliability, especially in the low signal-to-noise regime. However, resource allocation for semantic communications still remains unexplored, which is a critical issue in guaranteeing the semantic transmission reliability and the communication efficiency. To fill this gap, we investigate the spectral efficiency in the semantic domain and rethink the semantic-aware resource allocation issue. Specifically, taking text semantic communication as an example, the semantic spectral efficiency (S-SE) is defined for the first time, and is used to optimize resource allocation in terms of channel assignment and the number of transmitted semantic symbols. Additionally, for fair comparison of semantic and conventional communication systems, a transform method is developed to convert the conventional bit-based spectral efficiency to the S-SE. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed resource allocation method, as well as the superiority of semantic communications in terms of the S-SE.

Power Control for ISI Mitigation in Mobile Molecular Communication

In mobile molecular communication (MC), inter-symbol interference (ISI) can be mitigated by power control, requiring accurate estimates of the distance from transmitter to receiver. We present two power control strategies based on binary concentration shift keying (BCSK), namely BCSK with power control based on distance (BCSK-d), and BCSK with power control jointly considering distance and residual molecules in the channel (BCSK-d-RM). Performance of BCSK-d and BCSK-d-RM are analyzed in terms of the bit error rate (BER), the average energy consumption per bit, and the optimal detection threshold. Simulation results show that BCSK-d-RM and BCSK-d outperform BCSK in BER with the varying distance and the number of transmitted molecules. As BCSK-d-RM has higher performance, while BCSK-d has lower complexity, these schemes present a useful design tradeoff for mobile MC.

Blind Identification of SFBC-OFDM Signals Using Subspace Decompositions and Random Matrix Theory

Blind signal identification has important applications in both civilian and military communications. Previous investigations on blind identification of space-frequency block codes (SFBCs) only considered identifying Alamouti and spatial multiplexing transmission schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to identify SFBCs by analyzing discriminating features for different SFBCs, calculated by separating the signal subspace and noise subspace of the received signals at different adjacent OFDM subcarriers. Relying on random matrix theory, this algorithm utilizes a serial hypothesis test to determine the decision boundary according to the maximum eigenvalue in the noise subspace. Then, a decision tree of a special distance metric is employed for decision making. The proposed algorithm does not require prior knowledge of the signal parameters such as the number of transmit antennas, channel coefficients, modulation mode and noise power. Simulation results verify the viability of the proposed algorithm for a reduced observation period with an acceptable computational complexity.

Joint Blind Identification of the Number of Transmit Antennas and MIMO Schemes Using Gerschgorin Radii and FNN

Blind enumeration of the number of transmit antennas and blind identification of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) schemes are two pivotal steps in MIMO signal identification for both military and commercial applications. Conventional approaches treat them as two independent problems, namely the source number enumeration and the presence detection of space-time redundancy, respectively. In this paper, we develop a joint blind identification algorithm to determine the number of transmit antennas and MIMO scheme simultaneously. By restructuring the received signals, we derive three subspace-rank features based on the signal subspace-rank to determine the number of transmit antennas and identify space-time redundancy. Then, a Gerschgorin radii-based method and a feed-forward neural network are employed to calculate these three features, and a minimal weighted norm-1 distance metric is utilized for decision making. In particular, our approach can identify additional MIMO schemes, which most previous works have not considered, and is compatible with both single-carrier and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Simulation results verify the viability of our proposed approach for single-carrier and OFDM systems and demonstrate its favorable identification performance for a short observation period with acceptable complexity.

Blind Identification of SFBC-OFDM Signals Based on the Central Limit Theorem

Previous approaches for blind identification of space-frequency block codes (SFBC) do not perform well for short observation periods due to their inefficient utilization of frequency-domain redundancy. This paper proposes a hypothesis test (HT)-based algorithm and a support vector machine (SVM)-based algorithm for SFBC signals identification over frequency-selective fading channels to exploit two-dimensional space-frequency domain redundancy. Based on the central limit theorem, space-domain redundancy is exploited to construct the cross-correlation function of the estimator and frequency-domain redundancy is incorporated in the construction of the statistics. The difference between the two proposed algorithms is that the HT-based algorithm constructs a chi-square statistic and employs an HT to make the decision, while the SVM-based algorithm constructs a non-central chi-square statistic with unknown mean as a strongly-distinguishable statistical feature and uses an SVM to make the decision. Both algorithms do not require knowledge of the channel coefficients, modulation type or noise power, and the SVM-based algorithm does not require timing synchronization. Simulation results verify the superior performance of the proposed algorithms for short observation periods with comparable computational complexity to conventional algorithms, as well as their acceptable identification performance in the presence of transmission impairments.

Omnidirectional Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Coded Massive MIMO Systems

Common signals in public channels of cellular systems are usually transmitted omnidirectionally from the base station (BS). In recent years, both discrete and consecutive omnidirectional space-time block codings (STBC) have been proposed for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a uniform linear array (ULA) configuration to ensure cell-wide coverage. In these systems, constant received signal power at discrete angles, or constant received signal sum power in a few consecutive time slots at any angle is achieved. In addition, equal-power transmission per antenna and full spatial diversity can be achieved as well. In this letter, by utilizing the property of orthogonal complementary codes (OCCs), a new consecutive omnidirectional quasi-orthogonal STBC (QOSTBC) design is proposed, in which constant received sum power at any angle can be realized with equal-power transmission per antenna through one STBC transmission, and a higher diversity order of 4 can be achieved. In addition, the proposed design can be further extended to the uniform planar array (UPA) configuration with the two-dimensional OCCs.

Unilateral Left-Tail Anderson Darling Test Based Spectrum Sensing with Laplacian Noise

This paper focuses on spectrum sensing under Laplacian noise. To remit the negative effects caused by heavy-tailed behavior of Laplacian noise, the fractional lower order moments (FLOM) technology is employed to pre-process the received samples before spectrum sensing. Via exploiting the asymmetrical difference between the distribution for the FLOM of received samples in the absence and presence of primary users, we formulate the spectrum sensing problem under Laplacian noise as a unilateral goodness-of-fit (GoF) test problem. Based on this test problem, we propose a new GoF-based detector which is called unilateral left-tail Anderson Darling (ULAD) detector. The analytical expressions for the theoretical performance, in terms of false-alarm and detection probabilities, of the ULAD are derived. Moreover, a closed-form expression for the optimal detection threshold is also derived to minimize the total error rate. Simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical analyses and to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed detector than others.

Throughput Maximization for Wireless Powered Communications Harvesting from Non-dedicated Sources

We consider the wireless powered communications where users harvest energy from non-dedicated sources. The user follows a harvest-then-transmit protocol: in first phase of a slot time the source node harvests energy from a nearby conventional Access Point, then transmit information to its destination node or relay node in the second phase. We obtain the optimal\textit{ harvesting ratio} to maximize the expected throughput for direct transmission (DT )and decode forward (DF) relay under outage constraint, respectively. Our results reveal that the optimal harvest ratio for DT is dominated by the outage constraint while for DF relay, by the data causality .

An Improved WBF Algorithm for Higher-Speed Decoding of LDPC Codes

Due to the speed limitation of the conventional bit-chosen strategy in the existing weighted bit flipping algorithms, a high-speed LDPC decoder cannot be realized. To solve this problem, we propose a fast weighted bit flipping (FWBF) algorithm. Specifically, based on the stochastic error bitmap of the received vector, a partially parallel bit-choose strategy is adopted to lower the delay of choosing the bit flipped. Because of its partially parallel structure, the novel strategy can be well incorporated into the LDPC decoder [1]. The analysis of the decoding delay demonstrates that, the decoding speed can be greatly improved by adopting the proposed FWBF algorithm. Further, simulation results verify the validity of the proposed algorithm.
