JWST Census for the Mass-Metallicity Star-Formation Relations at z=4-10 with the Self-Consistent Flux Calibration and the Proper Metallicity Calibrators

We present the evolution of the mass-metallicity (MZ) relations at z=4-10 derived with 135 galaxies identified in the JWST/NIRSpec data taken from the three major public spectroscopy programs of ERO, GLASS, and CEERS. Because there are many discrepancies between flux measurements reported by early ERO studies, we first establish our NIRSpec data reduction procedure for reliable emission-line flux measurements and errors successfully explaining Balmer decrements with no statistical tensions via thorough comparisons of the early ERO studies. Applying the reduction procedure to the 135 galaxies, we obtain emission-line fluxes for physical property measurements. We confirm that 10 out of the 135 galaxies with [OIII]4363-lines have electron temperatures of (1.1-2.3)*10^4K, similar to lower-z star-forming galaxies, that can be explained by heating of young massive stars. We derive metallicities of the 10 galaxies by the direct method and the rest of the galaxies with strong lines by the metallicity calibrations of Nakajima et al. (2022) applicable for these low-mass metal-poor galaxies, anchoring the metallicities with the direct-method measurements. We thus obtain MZ relations and star-formation rate (SFR)-MZ relations over z=4-10. We find that there is a small evolution of the MZ relation from z~2-3 to z=4-10, while interestingly that the SFR-MZ relation shows no evolution up to z~8 but a significant decrease at z>8 beyond the error. This SFR-MZ relation decrease at z>8 may suggest a break of the metallicity equilibrium state via star-formation, inflow, and outflow, while further statistical and local-baseline studies are needed for a conclusion.

Photometric IGM tomography with Subaru/HSC: the large-scale structure of Ly$α$ emitters and IGM transmission in the COSMOS field at $z\sim5$

We present a novel technique called "photometric IGM tomography" to map the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $z\simeq4.9$ in the COSMOS field. It utilizes deep narrow-band (NB) imaging to photometrically detect faint Ly$α$ forest transmission in background galaxies across the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC)'s $1.8\rm\,sq.\,deg$ field of view and locate Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) in the same cosmic volume. Using ultra-deep HSC images and Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting, we measure the Ly$α$ forest transmission at $z\simeq4.9$ along a large number ($140$) of background galaxies selected from the DEIMOS10k spectroscopic catalogue at $4.98<z<5.89$ and the SILVERRUSH LAEs at $z\simeq5.7$. We photometrically measure the mean Ly$α$ forest transmission and achieve a result consistent with previous measurements based on quasar spectra. We also measure the angular LAE-Ly$α$ forest cross-correlation and Ly$α$ forest auto-correlation functions and place an observational constraint on the large-scale fluctuations of the IGM around LAEs at $z\simeq4.9$. Finally, we present the reconstructed 2D tomographic map of the IGM, co-spatial with the large-scale structure of LAEs, at a transverse resolution of $11 \,h^{-1}\rm cMpc$ across $140\,h^{-1}\rm cMpc$ in the COSMOS field at $z\simeq4.9$. We discuss the observational requirements and the potential applications of this new technique for understanding the sources of reionization, quasar radiative history, and galaxy-IGM correlations across $z\sim3-6$. Our results represent the first proof-of-concept of photometric IGM tomography, offering a new route to examining early galaxy evolution in the context of the large-scale cosmic web from the epoch of reionization to cosmic noon.

Cosmological-Scale Lyman-alpha Forest Absorption Around Galaxies and AGN Probed with the HETDEX and SDSS Spectroscopic Data

We present cosmological-scale 3-dimensional (3D) neutral hydrogen ({\sc Hi}) tomographic maps at $z=2-3$ over a total of 837 deg$^2$ in two blank fields that are developed with Ly$α$ forest absorptions of 14,736 background Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars at $z$=2.08-3.67. Using the tomographic maps, we investigate the large-scale ($\gtrsim 10$ $h^{-1}$cMpc) average {\sc Hi} radial profiles and two-direction profiles of the line-of-sight (LoS) and transverse (Trans) directions around galaxies and AGN at $z=2-3$ identified by the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment (HETDEX) and SDSS surveys, respectively. The peak of the {\sc Hi} radial profile around galaxies is lower than the one around AGN, suggesting that the dark-matter halos of galaxies are less massive on average than those of AGN. The LoS profile of AGN is narrower than the Trans profile, indicating the Kaiser effect. There exist weak absorption outskirts at $\gtrsim 30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc beyond {\sc Hi} structures of galaxies and AGN found in the LoS profiles that can be explained by the {\sc Hi} gas at $\gtrsim 30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc falls toward the source positions. Our findings indicate that the {\sc Hi} radial profile of AGN has transitions from proximity zones ($\lesssim$ a few $h^{-1}$cMpc) to the {\sc Hi} structures ($\sim 1-30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc) and the weak absorption outskirts ($\gtrsim 30$ $h^{-1}$cMpc). Although there is no significant dependence of AGN types (type-1 vs. type-2) on the {\sc Hi} profiles, the peaks of the radial profiles anti-correlate with AGN luminosities, suggesting that AGN's ionization effects are stronger than the gas mass differences.

EMPRESS. XI. SDSS and JWST Search for Local and z~4-5 Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies (EMPGs): Clustering and Chemical Properties of Local EMPGs

We search for local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs), selecting photometric candidates by broadband color excess and machine-learning techniques with the SDSS photometric data. After removing stellar contaminants by shallow spectroscopy with Seimei and Nayuta telescopes, we confirm that three candidates are EMPGs with 0.05--0.1 $Z_\odot$ by deep Magellan/MagE spectroscopy for faint {\sc[Oiii]}$λ$4363 lines. Using a statistical sample consisting of 105 spectroscopically-confirmed EMPGs taken from our study and the literature, we calculate cross-correlation function (CCF) of the EMPGs and all SDSS galaxies to quantify environments of EMPGs. Comparing another CCF of all SDSS galaxies and comparison SDSS galaxies in the same stellar mass range ($10^{7.0}-10^{8.4} M_\odot$), we find no significant ($>1σ$) difference between these two CCFs. We also compare mass-metallicity relations (MZRs) of the EMPGs and those of galaxies at $z\sim$ 0--4 with a steady chemical evolution model and find that the EMPG MZR is comparable with the model prediction on average. These clustering and chemical properties of EMPGs are explained by a scenario of stochastic metal-poor gas accretion on metal-rich galaxies showing metal-poor star formation. Extending the broadband color-excess technique to a high-$z$ EMPG search, we select 17 candidates of $z\sim$ 4--5 EMPGs with the deep ($\simeq30$ mag) near-infrared JWST/NIRCam images obtained by ERO and ERS programs. We find galaxy candidates with negligible {\sc[Oiii]}$λλ$4959,5007 emission weaker than the local EMPGs and known high-$z$ galaxies, suggesting that some of these candidates may fall in 0--0.01 $Z_\odot$, which potentially break the lowest metallicity limit known to date.

EMPRESS. IX. Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies are Very Gas-Rich Dispersion-Dominated Systems: Will JWST Witness Gaseous Turbulent High-z Primordial Galaxies?

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities ($0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}$) and low stellar masses ($10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}$). Taking deep medium-high resolution ($R\sim7500$) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H$α$ emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H$α$ flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities ($v_{\rm rot}$) of 5--23 km s$^{-1}$ smaller than the velocity dispersions ($σ_{0}$) of 17--31 km s$^{-1}$, indicating dispersion-dominated ($v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}=0.29-0.80<1$) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of $f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0$. Comparing our results with other H$α$ kinematics studies, we find that $v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}$ decreases and $f_{\rm gas}$ increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-$z$ ($z\sim 7$) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at $z\sim 7$.

The Stellar Mass - Black Hole Mass Relation at $z\sim2$ Down to $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}\sim10^7 M_\odot$ Determined by HETDEX

We investigate the stellar mass - black hole mass ($\mathcal{M}_*-\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}$) relation with type 1 AGN down to $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}=10^7 M_\odot$, corresponding to a $\simeq -21$ absolute magnitude in rest-frame ultraviolet (UV), at $z = 2-2.5$. Exploiting the deep and large-area spectroscopic survey of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), we identify 66 type 1 AGN with $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}$ ranging from $10^7$ to $10^{10} M_\odot$ that are measured with single-epoch virial method using C{\sc iv} emission lines detected in the HETDEX spectra. $\mathcal{M}_*$ of the host galaxies are estimated from optical to near-infrared photometric data taken with Spitzer, WISE, and ground-based 4-8m class telescopes by CIGALE SED fitting. We further assess the validity of SED fitting in two cases by host-nuclear decomposition performed through surface brightness profile fitting on spatially-resolved host galaxies with JWST/NIRCam CEERS data. We obtain the $\mathcal{M}_*-\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}$ relation covering the unexplored low-mass ranges of $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}~\sim~10^7-10^8~M_\odot$, and conduct forward modelling to fully account for the selection biases and observational uncertainties. The intrinsic $\mathcal{M}_*-\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}$ relation at $z\sim 2$ has a moderate positive offset of $0.52\pm0.14$~dex from the local relation, suggestive of more efficient black hole growth at higher redshift even in the low-mass regime of $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}~\sim~10^7-10^8~M_\odot$. Our $\mathcal{M}_*-\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}$ relation is inconsistent with the $\mathcal{M}_\mathrm{BH}$ suppression at the low-$\mathcal{M}_*$ regime predicted by recent hydrodynamic simulations at a $98\%$ confidence level, suggesting that feedback in the low-mass systems may be weaker than those produced in hydrodynamic simulations.

A Comprehensive Study on Galaxies at z~9-16 Found in the Early JWST Data: UV Luminosity Functions and Cosmic Star-Formation History at the Pre-Reionization Epoch

We conduct a comprehensive study on dropout galaxy candidates at $z\sim9-16$ using the first 90 arcmin$^2$ JWST/NIRCam images taken by the early release observations (ERO) and early release science (ERS) programs. With the JWST simulation images, we find that a number of foreground interlopers are selected with a weak photo-$z$ determination ($Δχ^2>4$). We thus carefully apply a secure photo-$z$ selection criterion ($Δχ^2>9$) and conventional color criteria with confirmations of the ERO NIRSpec spectroscopic redshifts, and obtain a total of 23 dropout galaxies at $z\sim9-16$, including two candidates at $z_\mathrm{phot}=16.25_{-0.46}^{+0.24}$ and $16.41_{-0.55}^{+0.66}$. We perform thorough comparisons of dropout galaxies found in our work with recent JWST studies, and conclude that our galaxy sample is reliable enough for statistical analyses. We derive the UV luminosity functions at $z\sim9-16$, and confirm that our UV luminosity functions at $z\sim 9$ and $12$ agree with those determined by other HST and JWST studies. The cosmic star-formation rate density decreases from $z\sim9$ to $12$, and perhaps to $16$, but the densities at $z\sim12-16$ are higher than the constant star formation efficiency model. Interestingly, there are six bright galaxy candidates at $z\sim10-16$ with $M_\mathrm{UV}<-19.5$ mag and $M_*\sim10^{8-9} M_\odot$. Because a majority ($\sim80$\%) of these galaxies show no signatures of AGNs in their morphologies, the high cosmic star-formation rate densities and the existence of these UV-luminous galaxies are explained by no suppression of star-formation by the UV background radiation at the pre-reionization epoch and/or an efficient UV radiation production by a top-heavy IMF with Population III-like star formation.

EMPRESS. VIII. A New Determination of Primordial He Abundance with Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies: A Suggestion of the Lepton Asymmetry and Implications for the Hubble Tension

The primordial He abundance $Y_\mathrm{P}$ is a powerful probe of cosmology. Currently, $Y_\mathrm{P}$ is best determined by observations of metal-poor galaxies, while there are only a few known local extremely metal-poor ($<0.1 Z_\odot$) galaxies (EMPGs) having reliable He/H measurements with HeI$λ$10830 near-infrared (NIR) emission. Here we present deep Subaru NIR spectroscopy for 10 EMPGs. Combining the existing optical data, He/H values of 5 out of the 10 EMPGs are reliably derived by the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Adding the existing 3 EMPGs and 51 moderately metal-poor ($0.1-0.4 Z_\odot$) galaxies with reliable He/H estimates, we obtain $Y_\mathrm{P}=0.2370^{+0.0034}_{-0.0033}$ by linear regression in the $\mathrm{(He/H)}-\mathrm{(O/H)}$ plane, where we increase the number of EMPGs from 3 to 8 anchoring He/H of the most metal-poor gas in galaxies. Although our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ measurement and previous measurements are consistent, our result is slightly ($\sim 1σ$) smaller due to our EMPGs. With our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and the existing primordial deuterium $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurement, we constrain the effective number of neutrino species $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and the baryon-to-photon ratio $η$ showing $\gtrsim 1-2σ$ tensions with the Standard Model and Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Motivated by the tensions, we allow the degeneracy parameter of electron-neutrino $ξ_e$ to vary as well as $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and $η$. We obtain $ξ_e = 0.05^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$, $N_\mathrm{eff}=3.11^{+0.34}_{-0.31}$, and $η\times10^{10}=6.08^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ from the $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurements with a prior of $η$ taken from Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Our constraints suggest a lepton asymmetry and allow for a high value of $N_\mathrm{eff}$ within the $1σ$ level, which could mitigate the Hubble tension.

ALMA Observations for CO Emission from Luminous Lyman-break Galaxies at $z=6.0293$-$6.2037$

We present our new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations targeting CO(6-5) emission from three luminous Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at $z_{\rm spec} = 6.0293$-$6.2037$ found in the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey, whose [OIII]$88μ$m and [CII]$158μ$m emission have been detected with ALMA. We find a marginal detection of the CO(6-5) line from one of our LBGs, J0235-0532, at the $\simeq 4 σ$ significance level and obtain upper limits for the other two LBGs, J1211-0118 and J0217-0208. Our $z=6$ luminous LBGs are consistent with the previously found correlation between the CO luminosity and the infrared luminosity. The unique ensemble of the multiple far-infrared emission lines and underlying continuum fed to a photodissociation region model reveal that J0235-0532 has a relatively high hydrogen nucleus density that is comparable to those of low-$z$ (U)LIRGs, quasars, and Galactic star-forming regions with high $n_{\rm H}$ values, while the other two LBGs have lower $n_{\rm H}$ consistent with local star-forming galaxies. By carefully taking account of various uncertainties, we obtain total gas mass and gas surface density constraints from their CO luminosity measurements. We find that J0235-0532 locates below the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, comparable to the previously CO(2-1) detected $z=5.7$ LBG, HZ10. Combined with previous results for dusty starbursts at similar redshifts, the KS relation at $z=5$-$6$ is on average consistent with the local one.

A Wide and Deep Exploration of Radio Galaxies with Subaru HSC (WERGS). IX. The Most Overdense Region at z~5 Inhabited by a Massive Radio Galaxy

We report on the galaxy density environment around a high-z radio galaxy (HzRG) at z=4.72, HSC J083913.17+011308.1 (HSC J0839+0113), probed using an r-dropout Lyman break galaxy (LBG) sample from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program data. We find that HSC J0839+0113 resides in the outskirt of an overdense region identified by the r-dropout galaxies at a 4.7 sigma significance level. The projected distance between HSC J0839+0113 and the peak position of the overdense region is 0.4 physical Mpc which is shorter than the typical protocluster radius in this epoch. According to the extended Press Schechter and the light cone models, the HSC J0839+0113-hosted overdense region is expected to evolve into a halo > 10^14 Msun at z=0 with a high probability of >80 %. These findings suggest that HSC J0839+0113 is associated with a protocluster. The HSC J0839+0113 rich-system is the most overdense region of LBGs among the known protoclusters with LBGs in the same cosmic epoch.

EMPRESS. V. Metallicity Diagnostics of Galaxies over 12+log(O/H)=~6.9-8.9 Established by a Local Galaxy Census: Preparing for JWST Spectroscopy

We present optical-line gas metallicity diagnostics established by the combination of local SDSS galaxies and the largest compilation of extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) including new EMPGs identified by the Subaru EMPRESS survey. A total of 103 EMPGs are included that cover a large parameter space of magnitude (Mi=-19 to -7) and H-beta equivalent width (10-600 Ang), i.e., wide ranges of stellar mass and star-formation rate. Using reliable metallicity measurements of the direct method for these galaxies, we derive the relationships between strong optical-line ratios and gas-phase metallicity over the range of 12+log(O/H)=~6.9-8.9 corresponding to 0.02-2 solar metallicity Zsun. We confirm that R23-index, ([OIII]+[OII])/H-beta, is the most accurate metallicity indicator with the metallicity uncertainty of 0.14 dex over the range among various popular metallicity indicators. The other metallicity indicators show large scatters in the metal-poor range (<0.1 Zsun). It is explained by our CLOUDY photoionization modeling that, unlike R23-index, the other metallicity indicators do not use a sum of singly and doubly ionized lines and cannot trace both low and high ionization gas. We find that the accuracy of the metallicity indicators is significantly improved, if one uses H-beta equivalent width measurements that tightly correlate with ionization states. In this work, we also present the relation of physical properties with UV-continuum slope beta and ionization production rate xi_ion derived with GALEX data for the EMPGs, and provide local anchors of galaxy properties together with the optical-line metallicity indicators that are available in the form of ASCII table and useful for forthcoming JWST spectroscopic studies.

First Identification of a CMB Lensing Signal Produced by $1.5$ Million Galaxies at $z\sim$4: Constraints on Matter Density Fluctuations at High Redshift

We report the first detection of the dark matter distribution around Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at high redshift through the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing measurements with the public {\it Planck} PR3 $κ$ map. The LBG sample consists of 1,473,106 objects with the median redshift of $z \sim 4$ that are identified in a total area of 305 deg$^2$ observed by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Strategic Survey Program (SSP) survey. After careful investigations of systematic uncertainties, such as contamination from foreground galaxies and Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB), we obtain the significant detection of the CMB lensing signal at $5.1σ$ that is dominated by 2-halo term signals of the LBGs. Fitting a simple model consisting of the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile and the linear-bias model, we obtain the typical halo mass of $2.9^{+9.5}_{-2.5} \times 10^{11} h^{-1} M_\odot$. Combining the CMB lensing and galaxy-galaxy clustering signals on the large scales, we demonstrate the first cosmological analysis at $z\sim4$ that constrains $(Ω_{{\rm m}0}$, $σ_8)$. We find that our constraint on $σ_8$ is roughly consistent with the {\it Planck} best-fit cosmology, while this $σ_8$ constraint is lower than the {\it Planck} cosmology over the $1σ$ level. This study opens up a new window for constraining cosmological parameters at high redshift by the combination of CMB and high-$z$ galaxies as well as studying the interplay between galaxy evolution and larges-scale structure at such high redshift, by upcoming CMB and optical and near-infrared imaging surveys.

EMPRESS. VII. Ionizing Spectrum Shapes of Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies: Uncovering the Origins of Strong HeII and the Impact on Cosmic Reionization

Strong high-ionization lines such as HeII of young galaxies are puzzling at high and low redshift. Although recent studies suggest the existence of non-thermal sources, whether their ionizing spectra can consistently explain multiple major emission lines remains a question. Here we derive the general shapes of the ionizing spectra for three local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) that show strong HeII$λ$4686. We parameterize the ionizing spectra composed of a blackbody and power-law radiation mimicking various stellar and non-thermal sources. We use photoionization models for nebulae, and determine seven parameters of the ionizing spectra and nebulae by Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, carefully avoiding systematics of abundance ratios. We obtain the general shapes of ionizing spectra explaining $\sim 10$ major emission lines within observational errors with smooth connections from observed X-ray and optical continua. We find that an ionizing spectrum of one EMPG has a blackbody-dominated shape, while the others have convex downward shapes at $>13.6$ eV, which indicate a diversity of the ionizing spectrum shapes. We confirm that the convex downward shapes are fundamentally different from ordinary stellar spectrum shapes, and that the spectrum shapes of these galaxies are generally explained by the combination of the stellar and ultra-luminous X-ray sources. Comparisons with stellar synthesis models suggest that the diversity of the spectrum shapes arises from differences in the stellar age. If galaxies at $z\gtrsim 6$ are similar to the EMPGs, high energy ($>54.4$ eV) photons of the non-stellar sources negligibly contribute to cosmic reionization due to relatively weak radiation.

EMPRESS. VI. Outflows Investigated in Low-Mass Galaxies with $M_*=10^4-10^7~M_\odot$: Weak Feedback in Low-Mass Galaxies?

We study emission line profiles of 21 nearby low-mass ($M_*=10^4-10^7~M_\odot$) galaxies in deep medium-high resolution spectra taken with Magellan/MagE. These low-mass galaxies are actively star-forming systems with high specific star-formation rates of $\mathrm{sSFR}\sim100-1000~\mathrm{Gyr}^{-1}$ that are well above the star-formation main sequence and its extrapolation. We identify broad-line components of H$α$ and [OIII]$λ5007$ emission in 14 out of the 21 galaxies that cannot be explained by the MagE instrumental profile or the natural broadening of line emission. We conduct double Gaussian profile fitting to the emission of the 14 galaxies, and find that the broad-line components have line widths significantly larger than those of the narrow-line components, indicative of galactic outflows. The board-line components have moderately large line widths of $\sim 100$ km s$^{-1}$. We estimate the maximum outflow velocities $v_\mathrm{max}$ and obtain values of $\simeq 60-200$ km s$^{-1}$, which are found to be comparable to or slightly larger than the escape velocities. Positive correlations of $v_\mathrm{max}$ with star-formation rates, stellar masses, and circular velocities, extend down into this low-mass regime. Broad- to narrow-line flux ratios BNRs are generally found to be smaller than those of massive galaxies. The small $v_\mathrm{max}$ and BNRs suggest that the mass loading factors $η$ can be as small as 0.1 - 1 or below, in contrast to the large $η$ of energy-driven outflows predicted by numerical simulations.

A Wide and Deep Exploration of Radio Galaxies with Subaru HSC (WERGS). VI. Distant Filamentary Structures Pointed by High-z Radio Galaxies at z~4

We present the environmental properties around high-$z$ radio galaxies (HzRGs) at $z\sim4$, which have been poorly investigated because of their rarity. We use the largest samples of HzRGs and $g$-dropout galaxy overdense regions at $z\sim4$, which were constructed from Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program, to characterize the HzRG environments statistically. We measure the $g$-dropout galaxy overdensities around 21 HzRGs whose rest-frame 1.4 GHz radio luminosities ($L_{1.4\mathrm{GHz}}$) are $10^{26-27}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. We find that the overdensities around the faint HzRGs with $L_{1.4\mathrm{GHz}}\sim10^{26.0-26.5}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ tend to be higher than that of the $g$-dropout galaxies. On the other hand, no significant difference of density environments is found between the luminous HzRGs with $ L_{1.4\mathrm{GHz}}\sim10^{26.5-27.0} $ W Hz$^{-1}$ and the $g$-dropout galaxies. The HzRGs are found to occupy more massive halos than $g$-dropout galaxies through a cross-correlation between the HzRGs and $g$-dropout galaxies. This trend is more pronounced in the faint HzRGs. These results are consistent with a scenario where HzRGs get older and more massive as the radio-luminosity decreases. The HzRGs are expected to trace the progenitors of local cluster halos from their calculated halo mass. In addition, we find that surrounding galaxies tend to distribute along the radio-jet major axis of the HzRGs at angular distances less than $\lesssim500$ physical kpc. Our findings imply the onset of the filamentary structures around the HzRGs at $z\sim4$.

Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs). XVI. 69 New Quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0

We present the spectroscopic discovery of 69 quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.0, drawn from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) imaging survey data. This is the 16th publication from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, and completes identification of all but the faintest candidates (i.e., i-band dropouts with zAB < 24 and y-band detections, and z-band dropouts with yAB < 24) with Bayesian quasar probability Pq > 0.1 in the HSC-SSP third public data release (PDR3). The sample reported here also includes three quasars with Pq < 0.1 at z ~ 6.6, which we selected in an effort to completely cover the reddest point sources with simple color cuts. The number of high-z quasars discovered in SHELLQs has now grown to 162, including 23 type-II quasar candidates. This paper also presents identification of seven galaxies at 5.6 < z < 6.7, an [O III] emitter at z = 0.954, and 31 Galactic cool stars and brown dwarfs. High-z quasars and galaxies comprise 75 % and 16 % respectively of all the spectroscopic SHELLQs objects that pass our latest selection algorithm with the PDR3 photometry. That is, a total of 91 % of the objects lie at z > 5.6. This demonstrates that the algorithm has very high efficiency, even though we are probing an unprecedentedly low-luminosity population down to M1450 ~ -21 mag.

GOLDRUSH. IV. Luminosity Functions and Clustering Revealed with ~4,000,000 Galaxies at z~2-7: Galaxy-AGN Transition, Star Formation Efficiency, and Implication for Evolution at z>10

We present new measurements of rest-UV luminosity functions and angular correlation functions from 4,100,221 galaxies at z~2-7 identified in the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey and CFHT Large-Area U-band Survey. The obtained luminosity functions at z~4-7 cover a very wide UV luminosity range of ~0.002-2000L*uv combined with previous studies, revealing that the dropout luminosity function is a superposition of the AGN luminosity function dominant at Muv<-24 mag and the galaxy luminosity function dominant at Muv>-22 mag, consistent with galaxy fractions based on 1037 spectroscopically-identified sources. Galaxy luminosity functions estimated from the spectroscopic galaxy fractions show the bright end excess beyond the Schechter function at >2sigma levels, which is possibly made by inefficient mass quenching, low dust obscuration, and/or hidden AGN activity. By analyzing the correlation functions at z~2-6 with halo occupation distribution models, we find a weak redshift evolution (within 0.3 dex) of the ratio of the star formation rate (SFR) to the dark matter accretion rate, SFR/(dMh/dt), indicating the almost constant star formation efficiency at z~2-6, as suggested by our earlier work at z~4-7. Meanwhile, the ratio gradually increases with decreasing redshift at z<5 within 0.3 dex, which quantitatively reproduces the redshift evolution of the cosmic SFR density, suggesting that the evolution is primarily driven by the increase of the halo number density due to the structure formation, and the decrease of the accretion rate due to the cosmic expansion. Extrapolating this calculation to higher redshifts assuming the constant efficiency suggests a rapid decrease of the SFR density at z>10 with $\propto10^{-0.5(1+z)}$, which will be directly tested with JWST.

We present Keck/LRIS follow-up spectroscopy for 13 photometric candidates of extremely metal poor galaxies (EMPGs) selected by a machine-learning technique applied to the deep (~26 AB mag) optical and wide-area (~500 deg^2) Subaru imaging data in the EMPRESS survey. Nine out of the 13 candidates are EMPGs with an oxygen abundance (O/H) less than ~10% solar value (O/H)_sun, and four sources are contaminants of moderately metal-rich galaxies or no emission-line objects. Notably, two out of the nine EMPGs have extremely-low stellar masses and oxygen abundances of 5*10^4--7*10^5 M_sun and 2--3% (O/H)_sun, respectively. With a sample of five EMPGs with (Fe/O) measurements, two (three) of which are taken from this study (the literature), we confirm that two EMPGs with the lowest (O/H) ratios of ~2% (O/H)_sun show high (Fe/O) ratios of ~0.1, close to the solar abundance ratio. Comparing galaxy chemical enrichment models, we find that the two EMPGs cannot be explained by a scenario of metal-poor gas accretion/episodic star-formation history due to their low (N/O) ratios. We conclude that the two EMPGs can be reproduced by an inclusion of bright hypernovae and/or hypothetical pair-instability supernovae (SNe) preferentially produced in a metal-poor environment. This conclusion implies that primordial galaxies at z~10 could have a high abundance of Fe that is not originated from Type Ia SNe with delays, and that Fe may not serve as a cosmic clock for primordial galaxies.
