Optical Cooling of Dot-in-crystal Halide Perovskites: Challenges of Nonlinear Exciton Recombination

Highly efficient anti-Stokes (AS) photoluminescence (PL) is observed from halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) due to their strong electron-phonon interactions. The AS PL is particularly intriguing as it suggests the potential for semiconductor optical cooling if the external quantum efficiency approaches 100%. However, the PL quantum efficiency in QDs is primarily dominated by multiparticle nonradiative Auger recombination processes under intense photoexcitation, which impose limits on the optical cooling gain. Here, we investigate the Auger recombination of dot-in-crystal perovskites. We quantitatively estimate the maximum optical cooling gain and the corresponding excitation intensity. We further conducted optical cooling experiments and demonstrate a maximum photo-cooling of approximately 9 K from room temperature. Additionally, we confirmed that increasing the excitation intensity leads to a transition from photo-cooling to photo-heating. These observations are consistent with our time-resolved measurements, offering insights into the potential and limitations of optical cooling in semiconductor QDs.

Generation of third-harmonic spin oscillation from strong spin precession induced by terahertz magnetic near fields

The ability to drive a spin system to state far from the equilibrium is indispensable for investigating spin structures of antiferromagnets and their functional nonlinearities for spintronics. While optical methods have been considered for spin excitation, terahertz (THz) pulses appear to be a more convenient means of direct spin excitation without requiring coupling between spins and orbitals or phonons. However, room-temperature responses are usually limited to small deviations from the equilibrium state because of the relatively weak THz magnetic fields in common approaches. Here, we studied the magnetization dynamics in a HoFeO3 crystal at room temperature. A custom-made spiral-shaped microstructure was used to locally generate a strong multicycle THz magnetic near field perpendicular to the crystal surface; the maximum magnetic field amplitude of about 2 T was achieved. The observed time-resolved change in the Faraday ellipticity clearly showed second- and third-order harmonics of the magnetization oscillation and an asymmetric oscillation behaviour. Not only the ferromagnetic vector M but also the antiferromagnetic vector L plays an important role in the nonlinear dynamics of spin systems far from equilibrium.

Size-controlled quantum dots reveal the impact of intraband transitions on high-order harmonic generation in solids

Since the discovery of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in solids, much effort has been devoted to understanding its generation mechanism and both interband and intraband transitions are known to be essential. However, intraband transitions are affected by the electronic structure of a solid, and how they contribute to nonlinear carrier generation and HHG remains an open question. Here, we use mid-infrared laser pulses to study HHG in CdSe and CdS quantum dots (QDs), where quantum confinement can be used to control the intraband transitions. We find that both the HHG intensity per excited volume and the generated carrier density increase when the average QD size is increased from about 2 nm to 3 nm. We show that the reduction of the subband gap energy in larger QDs enhances intraband transitions, and this in turn increases the rate of photocarrier injection by coupling with interband transitions, resulting in enhanced HHG.

Anti-Stokes Photoluminescence from CsPbBr3 Nanostructures Embedded in a Cs$_4$PbBr$_6$ Crystal

Lead halide perovskites possess high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and strong electron-phonon interactions, and therefore the optical cooling using up-conversion PL has been expected. We investigate anti-Stokes PL from green-luminescent Cs$_4$PbBr$_6$, whose origin is attributable to CsPbBr3 nanostructures embedded in a Cs$_4$PbBr$_6$ crystal. Because of the high transparency, low refractive index, and high stability of Cs$_4$PbBr$_6$, the green PL displays high external quantum efficiency without photo-degradation. Time-resolved PL spectroscopy reveals the excitonic behaviors in recombination process. The shape of the PL spectrum is almost independent of excitation photon energy, which means that the spectral width is determined by homogeneous broadening. We demonstrate that the phonon-assisted process dominates the Urbach tail of optical absorption and anti-Stokes PL at room temperature. Anti-Stokes PL is observed down to 70 K. We determine the temperature dependence of the Urbach energy and estimate the strength of the electron-phonon coupling. Our spectroscopic data show that CsPbBr3 nanostructures have potentially useful features for optical cooling.

Polaron Masses in CH3NH3PbX3 Perovskites Determined by Landau Level Spectroscopy in Low Magnetic Fields

We investigate the electron-phonon coupling in CH3NH3PbX3 lead halide perovskites through the observation of Landau levels and high-order excitons at weak magnetic fields, where the cyclotron energy is significantly smaller than the longitudinal optical phonon energy. The reduced masses of the carriers and the exciton binding energies obtained from these data are clearly influenced by polaron formation. We analyze the field-dependent polaronic and excitonic properties, and show that they can be quantitatively reproduced by the Frohlich large polaron model.

High-order harmonic generation in graphene: nonlinear coupling of intra and interband transitions

We investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in graphene with a quantum master equation approach. The simulations reproduce the observed enhancement in HHG in graphene under elliptically polarized light [N. Yoshikawa et al, Science 356, 736 (2017)]. On the basis of a microscopic decomposition of the emitted high-order harmonics, we find that the enhancement in HHG originates from an intricate nonlinear coupling between the intraband and interband transitions that are respectively induced by perpendicular electric field components of the elliptically polarized light. Furthermore, we reveal that contributions from different excitation channels destructively interfere with each other. This finding suggests a path to potentially enhance the HHG by blocking a part of the channels and canceling the destructive interference through band-gap or chemical potential manipulation.

Zener Tunneling Breakdown in Phase-Change Materials Revealed by Intense Terahertz Pulses

We have systematically investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of crystallization that occurs in the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 upon irradiation with an intense THz pulse. THz pump and optical probe spectroscopy revealed that Zener tunneling induces a nonlinear increase in the conductivity of the crystalline phase. This result indicates that the large electric field associated with the THz pulses causes a nonlinear increase only at the edge of the crystallized area. The electric field concentrating in this area causes a temperature increase via Joule heating, which in turn leads to nanometer scale crystal growth parallel to the field and the formation of filamentary conductive domains across the sample.

Observation of charged excitons in hole-doped carbon nanotubes using photoluminescence and absorption spectroscopy

We report the first observation of trions (charged excitons), three-particle bound states consisting of one electron and two holes, in hole-doped carbon nanotubes at room temperature. When p-type dopants are added to carbon nanotube solutions, the photoluminescence and absorption peaks of the trions appear far below the E11 bright exciton peak, regardless of the dopant species. The unexpectedly large energy separation between the bright excitons and the trions is attributed to the strong electron-hole exchange interaction in carbon nanotubes.

Femtosecond Excitation Correlation Spectroscopy of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes : Analysis Based on Nonradiative Multiexciton Recombination Processes

We studied the nonlinear time-resolved luminescence signals due to multiexciton recombination processes in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using femtosecond excitation correlation (FEC) spectroscopy. From theoretical analysis of the FEC signals, we found that the FEC signals in the long time range are dominated by the single exciton decay in SWNTs, where the exciton-exciton annihilation process is efficient. Our results provide a simple method to clarify the single exciton decay dynamics in low-dimensional materials.

Intersubband electronic Raman scattering in narrow GaAs single quantum wells dominated by single-particle excitations

We measured resonant Raman scattering by intersubband electronic excitations in GaAs/AlAs single quantum wells (QWs) with well widths ranging from 8.5 to 18 nm. In narrow (less than 10 nm) QWs with sufficiently high electron concentrations, only single-particle excitations (SPEs) were observed in intersubband Raman scattering, which was confirmed by the well-width dependence of Raman spectra. We found characteristic variations in Raman shift and line shape for SPEs with incident photon energy in the narrow QWs.
