Magnetic and Structural Properties of A-Site Ordered Chromium Spinel Sulfides: Alternating Antiferromagnetic and Ferromagnetic Interactions in the Breathing Pyrochlore Lattice

We report a comprehensive study on the magnetic and structural properties of the spinel sulfides LiInCr4S8, LiGaCr4S8, and CuInCr4S8, where Li+/Cu+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions form a zinc-blende-type order. On the basis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetization data obtained using polycrystalline samples, these three sulfides are suggested to be breathing pyrochlore magnets with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions on the small and large tetrahedra, respectively. The measured magnetization processes of the three sulfides up to 72 T are significantly different. The magnetization curves of LiInCr4S8 and CuInCr4S8 have large hysteresis loops with different shapes, while there is no hysteresis in that of LiGaCr4S8. Geometrical frustration of the small tetrahedron is likely to give rise to a wide variety of ground states, indicating the rich physics in these antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic breathing pyrochlore magnets.

Collinear Spin-density-wave Order and Anisotropic Spin Fluctuations in the Frustrated $J_1$--$J_2$ Chain Magnet NaCuMoO$_4$(OH)

The phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional magnet NaCuMoO$_4$(OH) is established through single-crystal NMR and heat-capacity measurements. The $^{23}$Na and $^1$H NMR experiments indicate a spiral and a collinear spin-density-wave (SDW) order below and above $B_c$ = 1.5-1.8 T, respectively. Moreover, in the paramagnetic state above the SDW transition temperature, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicates anisotropic spin fluctuations that have gapped excitations in the transverse spectrum but gapless ones in the longitudinal spectrum. These static and dynamic properties are well described by a theoretical model assuming quasi-one-dimensional chains with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions $J_2$ ($J_1$-$J_2$ chains). Because of the excellent crystal quality and good one dimensionality, NaCuMoO$_4$(OH) is a promising compound to elucidate the unique physics of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ chain.

Large Thermoelectric Power Factor at Low Temperatures in One-Dimensional Telluride Ta4SiTe4

We report the discovery of a very large thermoelectric power over -400 microV K-1 in the whisker crystals of a one-dimensional telluride Ta4SiTe4, while maintaining a low electrical resistivity of rho = 2 mohm cm, yielding a very large power factor of P = 80 microW cm-1 K-2 at an optimum temperature of 130 K. This temperature is widely controlled from the cryogenic temperature of 50 K to room temperature by chemical doping, resulting in the largest P of 170 microW cm-1 K-2 at 220-280 K. These P values far exceed those of the Bi2Te3-Sb2Te3 alloys at around room temperature, offering an avenue for realizing the practical-level thermoelectric cooling at low temperatures. The coexistence of a one-dimensional electronic structure and a very small band gap appearing in the vicinity of the Dirac semimetals probably causes the very large power factors in Ta4SiTe4, indicating that the "one-dimensional Dirac semimetal" is a promising way to find high-performance thermoelectric materials for the low temperature applications.

Magnetic Transitions under Ultrahigh Magnetic Fields of up to 130 T in the Breathing Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet LiInCr4O8

The magnetization processes of the spin-3/2 antiferromagnet LiInCr4O8 comprising a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice, which is an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, are studied under ultrahigh magnetic fields of up to 130 T using state-of-the-art pulsed magnets. A half magnetization plateau is observed above 90 T to 130 T, suggesting that LiInCr4O8 has a strong spin-lattice coupling, similar to conventional chromium spinel oxides. The magnetization of LiGa0.125In0.875Cr4O8, in which the structural and magnetic transitions at low temperatures have been completely suppressed, shows a sudden increase above 13 T, indicating that a spin gap of 2.2 meV exists between a tetramer singlet ground state and an excited state with total spin 1, with the latter being stabilized by the application of a magnetic field. The breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet is found to be a unique frustrated system with strong spin-lattice coupling and bond alternation.

Crossing-Line-Node Semimetals: General Theory and Application to Rare-Earth Trihydrides

Multiple line nodes in energy-band gaps are found in semimetals preserving mirror-reflection symmetry. We classify possible configurations of multiple line nodes with crossing points (crossing line nodes) under point-group symmetry. Taking the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) into account, we also classify topological phase transitions from crossing-line-node Dirac semimetals to other topological phases, e.g., topological insulators and point-node semimetals. This study enables one to find crossing-line-node semimetal materials and their behavior in the presence of SOI from the band structure in the absence of SOI without detailed calculations. As an example, the theory applies to hexagonal rare-earth trihydrides with the HoD3 structure and clarifies that it is a crossing-line-node Dirac semimetal hosting three line nodes.

Phase diagram of multiferroic KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$

The layered compound KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$, comprising distorted kagome planes of $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions, is a recent addition to the family of type-II multiferroics. Previous zero field neutron diffraction work has found two helically ordered regimes in \kns, each showing a distinct coupling between the magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. Here, we extend this work to magnetic fields up to $20$~T using neutron powder diffraction, capacitance, polarization, and high-field magnetization measurements, hence determining the $H-T$ phase diagram. We find metamagnetic transitions in both low temperatures phases around $μ_0 H_c \sim 3.7$~T, which neutron powder diffraction reveals to correspond to a rotation of the helix plane away from the easy plane, as well as a small change in the propagation vector. Furthermore, we show that the sign of the ferroelectric polarization is reversible in a magnetic field, although no change is observed (or expected on the basis of the magnetic structure) due to the transition at $3.7$~T. We finally justify the temperature dependence of the polarization in both zero-field ordered phases by a symmetry analysis of the free energy expansion.

Low Carrier Density Metal Realized in Candidate Line-Node Dirac Semimetals CaAgP and CaAgAs

We study polycrystalline samples of the hexagonal pnictides, CaAgP and CaAgAs, both of which are ideal candidates for line-node Dirac semimetals. The polycrystalline samples of CaAgP and CaAgAs obtained in this study are low-carrier metals, where hole carriers are dominant. By combining the hole carrier densities estimated from Hall coefficients and the electronic structures calculated by first principles calculations, both samples are found to have a ring-torus Fermi surface, derived from a ring-shaped Dirac line node. In the phosphide sample, the Fermi energy EF is located at around the end of the linear dispersion region of the electronic bands, while the EF in the arsenide sample exists in the middle of this region, suggesting that the arsenide is a more promising system for uncovering the physics of line-node Dirac semimetals.

Synthesis and Superconducting Properties of a Hexagonal Phosphide ScRhP

We report the synthesis and superconducting properties of the ternary phosphide ScRhP. The crystal structure of ScRhP is determined to be the ordered Fe2P type with the hexagonal P-62m space group by powder X-ray diffraction experiments. Resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity data indicate that ScRhP is a bulk superconductor with a transition temperature Tc of 2 K. This Tc is lower than that of its 5d analogue, ScIrP (Tc = 3.4 K), although ScRhP is found to have larger electronic density of states at the Fermi energy and a higher Debye temperature than those of ScIrP.

Thermoelectric Properties of Antiperovskite Calcium Oxides Ca3PbO and Ca3SnO

We report the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline samples of Ca3Pb1-xBixO (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) and Ca3SnO, both crystallizing in a cubic antiperovskite-type structure. The Ca3SnO sample shows metallic resistivity and its thermoelectric power approaches 100 uV K-1 at room temperature, resulting in the thermoelectric power factor of Ca3SnO being larger than that of Ca3Pb1-xBixO. On the basis of Hall and Sommerfeld coefficients, the Ca3SnO sample is found to be a p-type metal with a carrier density of ~1019 cm-3, a mobility of ~80 cm2 V-1 s-1, both comparable to those in degenerated semiconductors, and a moderately large hole carrier effective mass. The coexistence of moderately high mobility and large effective mass observed in Ca3SnO, as well as possible emergence of a mutivalley electronic structure with a small band gap at low-symmetry points in k-space, suggests that the antiperovskite Ca oxides have strong potential as a thermoelectric material.

Superconductivity in the Hexagonal Ternary Phosphide ScIrP

We report the discovery of a bulk superconducting transition at 3.4 K in the ternary phosphide, ScIrP, which crystallizes in a hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure without spatial inversion symmetry. On the basis of heat capacity data in a zero magnetic field, ScIrP is suggested to be a weakly-coupled Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor. Alternatively, experimental results under magnetic fields indicate that this material is a type-II superconductor with an upper critical field Hc2 at magnetic fields above 5 T at zero temperature. This moderately high Hc2 does not violate the Pauli limit, but it does imply that there is a significant effect from the strong spin-orbit interaction of Ir 5d electrons in the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. Electronic structure calculations show an interesting feature of ScIrP, where both the Sc 3d and Ir 5d orbitals contribute to the electronic density of states at the Fermi level.

Line-Node Dirac Semimetal and Topological Insulating Phase in Noncentrosymmetric Pnictides CaAgX (X = P, As)

Two noncentrosymmetric ternary pnictides, CaAgP and CaAgAs, are reported as topological line-node semimetals protected solely by mirror-reflection symmetry. The band gap vanishes on a circle in momentum space, and surface states emerge within the circle. Extending this study to spin-orbit coupled systems reveals that, compared with CaAgP, a substantial band gap is induced in CaAgAs by large spin-orbit interaction. The resulting states are a topological insulator, in which the Z2 topological invariant is given by 1; 000. To clarify the Z2 topological invariants for time-reversal-invariant systems without spatial-inversion symmetry, we introduce an alternative way to calculate the invariants characterizing a line node and topological insulator for mirror-reflection-invariant systems.

Orbital Arrangements and Magnetic Interactions in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Cuprates ACuMoO_4(OH) (A = Na, K)

A new spin-1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuMoO_4(OH) is prepared by the hydrothermal method. The crystal structures of KCuMoO_4(OH) and the already-known Na-analogue, NaCuMoO_4(OH), are isotypic, comprising chains of Cu^{2+} ions in edge-sharing CuO_4(OH)_2 octahedra. Despite the structural similarity, their magnetic properties are quite different because of the different arrangements of d_{x2-y2} orbitals carrying spins. For NaCuMoO_4(OH), d_{x2-y2} orbitals are linked by superexchange couplings via two bridging oxide ions, which gives a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J_1 of -51 K and an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction J_2 of 36 K in the chain. In contrast, a staggered d_{x2-y2} orbital arrangement in KCuMoO_4(OH) results in superexchange couplings via only one bridging oxide ion, which makes J_1 antiferromagnetic as large as 238 K and J_2 negligible. This comparison between the two isotypic compounds demonstrates an important role of orbital arrangements in determining the magnetic properties of cuprates.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Breathing Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet LiGa1-xInxCr4O8

The spinel oxides LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8 contain size-alternating pyrochlore lattices of spin-3/2 Cr3+ tetrahedra with different magnitudes of alternation. We show here that the solid solutions LiGa1-xInxCr4O8 between these two 'breathing' pyrochlore compounds display (i) rapid suppression of magnetic and structural transitions upon doping the end members, (ii) spin-glass-like freezing above 2 K in the range 0.1 $\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.6, and (iii) apparent spin-gap behavior for x $\gtrsim$ 0.7. Furthermore, no transitions are observed above 2 K at x ~ 0.9, where magnetic susceptibility remains finite at 2 K and magnetic heat capacity shows a quadratic temperature dependence at 1-5 K. Our work shows that breathing pyrochlore compounds provide a unique opportunity for studying both geometrical frustration and bond alternation.

Novel Phase Transitions in the Breathing Pyrochlore Lattice: 7Li-NMR on LiInCr4O8 and LiGaCr4O8

We report 7Li-NMR studies on LiInCr4O8 and LiGaCr4O8, in which Cr3+ ions with spin 3/2 form a breathing pyrochlore lattice, a network of tetrahedra with alternating sizes. In LiInCr4O8 with large alternation, the nuclear relaxation rate 1/T1 shows an activated temperature (T) dependence down to 18 K, indicating a singlet ground state with a spin gap. This behavior, however, is disrupted by an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at 13 K, which is preceded by another, most likely structural, transition at 16 K. In contrast, LiGaCr4O8 with small alternation shows no spin gap but exhibits a first-order AF transition over a distributed T-range 13-20 K. Nevertheless, 1/T1 of the paramagnetic phase diverges toward 13 K, indicating proximity to a second-order transition. The results indicate that LiGaCr4O8 is located in the vicinity of a tricritical point in the phase diagram.

NaCuMoO_4(OH) as a Candidate Frustrated J_1-J_2 Chain Quantum Magnet

In a frustrated J_1-J_2 chain with the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction J_1 and the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction J_2, novel magnetic states such as a spin-nematic state are theoretically expected. However, they have been rarely examined in experiments because of the difficulty in obtaining suitable model compounds. We show here that the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet NaCuMoO_4(OH), which comprises edge-sharing CuO_2 chains, is a good candidate J_1-J_2 chain antiferromagnet. The exchange interactions are estimated as J_1 = - 51 K and J_2 = 36 K by comparing the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and magnetization data with the data obtained using calculations by the exact diagonalization method. High-field magnetization measurements at 1.3 K show a saturation above 26 T with little evidence of a spin nematic state expected just below the saturation field, which is probably due to smearing effects caused by thermal fluctuations and the polycrystalline nature of the sample.

Helical order and multiferroicity in the $S=1/2$ quasi-kagome system KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$

Several Cu$^{2+}$ hydroxide minerals have recently been identified as candidate realizations of the $S=1/2$ kagome Heisenberg model. In this context, we have studied the distorted system KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$ using neutron scattering and bulk measurements. Although the distortion favors magnetic order over a spin liquid ground state, refinement of the magnetic diffraction pattern below $T_{N1}=7.05(5)$ K yields a complex helical structure with $\mathbf{k}=(0.77~0~0.11)$. This structure, as well as the spin excitation spectrum, are well described by a classical Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor couplings. Multiferroicity is observed below $T_{N1}$, with an unusual crossover between improper and pseudo-proper behavior occurring at $T_{N2}=5.5$ K. The polarization at $T=2$ K is $P=1.5 μ$Cm$^{-2}$. The properties of KCu$_3$As$_2$O$_7$(OD)$_3$ highlight the variety of physics which arise from the interplay of spin and orbital degrees of freedom in Cu$^{2+}$ kagome systems.

Kagome-Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet NaBa2Mn3F11

A new type of magnetically frustrated lattice is found in the layered fluoride NaBa2Mn3F11. A kagome-type array of regular triangles composed of Mn2+ ions (spin 5/2) deforms so as to generate the next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2 between three out of six spins in the hexagon of a normal kagome lattice, in addition to the nearest-neighbor interaction J1. As a function of |J2/J1|, this lattice can interconnect the kagome (J2 = 0) and the triangular (J2 = J1) lattices and thus is called the kagome-triangular (KT) lattice. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements performed on a polycrystalline sample of NaBa2Mn3F11 show an intensive short-range antiferromagnetic correlation below 14 K probably due to the specific magnetic frustration of the KT lattice. In addition, a long-range order at 2.0 K is observed, which is significantly low compared with the antiferromagnetic Weiss temperature of 32.3 K. Theoretical considerations of Heisenberg spins in the KT lattice reveal unique non-coplanar magnetic orders in the case of ferromagnetic J1 and antiferromagnetic J2. NaBa2Mn3F11 may actually exist in this regime according to the results of our analysis based on classical Monte-Carlo simulation.

Spinodal Decomposition in the TiO2-VO2 System

Spinodal decomposition is a ubiquitous phenomenon leading to phase separation from a uniform solution. We show that a spinodal decomposition occurs in a unique combination of two rutile compounds of TiO2 and VO2, which are chemically and physically distinguished from each other: TiO2 is a wide-gap insulator with photo catalytic activities and VO2 is assumed to be a strongly correlated electron system which exhibits a dramatic metal-insulator transition at 342 K. The spinodal decomposition takes place below 830 K at a critical composition of 34 mol% Ti, generates a unidirectional composition modulation along the c axis with a wavelength of approximately 6 nm, and finally results in the formation of self-assembled lamella structures made up of Ti-rich and V-rich layers stacked alternately with 30-50 nm wavelengths. A metal-insulator transition is not observed in quenched solid solutions with intermediate compositions but emerges in the thin V-rich layers as the result of phase separation. Interestingly, the metal-insulator transition remains as sharp as in pure VO2 even in such thin layers and takes place at significantly reduced temperatures of 310-340 K, which is probably due to a large misfit strain induced by lattice matching at the coherent interface.
