High-pressure synthesis of superconducting Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ using diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond heater

High-pressure techniques open exploration of functional materials in broad research fields. An established diamond anvil cell with a boron-doped diamond heater and transport measurement terminals has performed the high-pressure synthesis of a cubic Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ superconductor. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ phase is stable in the pressure range of P>5 GPa in a decompression process. Transport measurement terminals in the diamond anvil cell detect a metallic nature and superconductivity in the synthesized Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ with a maximum onset transition temperature of 13.3 K at 5.6 GPa. The observed pressure-T$_{c}$ relationship is consistent with that from the first-principles calculation. The observation of superconductivity in Sn$_{3}$S$_{4}$ opens further materials exploration under high temperature and pressure conditions.

Protonation-induced discrete superconducting phases in bulk FeSe single crystals

The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, of FeSe can be significantly enhanced several-fold by applying pressure, electron doping, intercalating spacing layer, and reducing dimensionality. Various ordered electronic phases, such as nematicity and spin density waves, have also been observed accompanying high-$T_{\rm{c}}$ superconductivity. Investigation on the evolution of the electronic structure with $T_{\rm{c}}$ is essential to understanding electronic behavior and high-$T_{\rm{c}}$ superconductivity in FeSe and its derived superconductors. In this report, we have found a series of discrete superconducting phases, with a maximum $T_{\rm{c}}$ up to 44 K, in H$^+$-intercalated FeSe single crystals using an ionic liquid gating method. Accompanied with the increase of $T_{\rm{c}}$, suppression of the nematic phase and evolution from non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid behavior was observed. An abrupt change in the Fermi surface topology was proposed to explain the discrete superconducting phases. A band structure that favors the high-$T_{\rm{c}}$ superconducting phase was also revealed.

Robustness of superconductivity to external pressure in high-entropy-alloy-type metal telluride AgInSnPbBiTe5

High-entropy-alloy (HEA) superconductors are a new class of disordered superconductors. In this study, we investigate the robustness of superconducting states in HEA-type metal telluride (MTe; M = Ag, In, Sn, Pb, Bi) under high pressure. PbTe exhibits a structural transition from a NaCl-type to an orthorhombic Pnma structure at low pressures, and further transitions to a CsCl-type structure at high pressures. When the superconductivity of the CsCl-type PbTe is observed, it is found that its superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with pressure. However, in the HEA-type AgInSnPbBiTe5, Tc is almost independent of pressure, for pressures ranging from 13.0 to 35.1 GPa. This trend is quite similar to that observed in an HEA superconductor (TaNb)0.67(HfZrTi)0.33, which shows that the robustness of superconductivity to external pressure is a universal feature in HEA-type superconductors. To clarify the effects of the modification of the configurational entropy of mixing on the crystal structure, superconducting states, and electronic structure of MTe, electrical resistance measurements, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy with partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS) for three MTe polycrystalline samples of PbTe, AgPbBiTe3, and AgInSnPbBiTe5 with different configurational entropies of mixing at the M site were performed.

XERUS: An open-source tool for quick XRD phase identification and refinement automation

Analysis of XRD diffraction patterns is one of the keystones of materials science and materials research. With the advancement of data-driven methods for materials design, candidate materials can be quickly screened for the study of a desired physical property. Efficient methods to automatically analyze and identify phases present in a given pattern, are paramount for the success of this new paradigm. To aid this process, the open source python package Xray Estimation and Refinement Using Similarity (XERUS) for semi-automatic/automatic phase identification is presented. XERUS takes advantages of open crystal structure databases, not relying on proprietary databases, to obtain crystal structures on the fly, being then chemical space agnostic. By wrapping around GSASII, it can automatically simulate patterns and calculate similarity measures used for phase identification. Our approach is simple and quick but also applicable to multiphase identification, by coupling the similarity calculations with quick refinements followed by an iterative peak removal process. XERUS is shown in action in four different experimental datasets and also it is benchmarked against a recently proposed deep learning method for a mixture dataset covering the Li-Mn-O-F chemical space. XERUS will be freely available on https://www.github.com/pedrobcst/Xerus/

High-pressure Mg-Sc-H phase diagram and its superconductivity from first-principles calculations

In this work, global search for crystal structures of ternary Mg-Sc-H hydrides (Mg$_x$Sc$_y$H$_z$) under high pressure ($100 \le P \le 200$ GPa) were performed using the evolutionary algorithm and first-principles calculations. Based on them, we computed the thermodynamic convex hull and pressure-dependent phase diagram of Mg$_x$Sc$_y$H$_z$ for $z/(x+y) < 4$. We have identified the stable crystal structures of four thermodynamically stable compounds with the higher hydrogen content, i.e., $R\bar{3}m$-MgScH$_{6}$, $C2/m$-Mg$_{2}$ScH$_{10}$, $Immm$-MgSc$_{2}$H$_{9}$ and $Pm\bar{3}m$-Mg(ScH$_{4}$)$_{3}$. Their superconducting transition temperatures were computationally predicted by the McMillan-Allen-Dynes formula combined with first-principles phonon calculations. They were found to exhibit superconductivity; among them, $R\bar{3}m$-MgScH$_{6}$ was predicted to have the highest $T_{c}$ (i.e. 23.34 K) at 200 GPa.

The systematic study on the stability and superconductivity of Y-Mg-H compounds under high pressure

Motivated by recent discovery of yttrium-based high-temperature ternary superconducting hydrides (e.g., CaYH$_{12}$, LaYH$_{12}$, and ScYH$_{6}$), we have employed evolutionary algorithm and first-principles calculations to comprehensively examine the structural stability and superconductivity of the YMgH$_{x}$ system at high pressure. The hydrogen content $x$ and the pressure are both important factors in the stability of these candidate structures. We find that the stability of hydrogen-rich materials frequently necessitates higher pressure. For instance, the pressures to stabilize $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$ and $Cmmm$-YMgH$_{12}$ are both more than 250 GPa. Hydrogen-less materials, such as $I4_{1}/amd$-YMgH$_{2}$ and $P6_{3}/mmc$-YMgH$_{3}$, can be stable at pressures as low as 100 GPa. In addition, we find a metastable structure for YMgH$_{6}$ with the same space group as the $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$. A metastable sodalite-like face-centered cubic (FCC) structure is also found in YMgH$_{12}$. These four clathrate structures of $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{6}$, $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$, $Cmmm$-YMgH$_{12}$, and $Fd\bar{3}m$-YMgH$_{12}$ is made up of H14, H18, H24, and H24 cages, respectively, in which the H-H pair exhibits weak covalent bonding. According to phonon calculations, $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{6}$ and $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$ require a pressure of 300 GPa to maintain dynamic stability, however $Cmmm$-YMgH$_{12}$ and $Fd\bar{3}m$-YMgH$_{12}$ can maintain dynamic stability at pressures of 200 GPa and 250 GPa, respectively. Electron-phonon coupling calculations indicate that they might be potential high-temperature superconductors, with superconductivity intimately linked to the H cage structure. The sodalite structure $Fd\bar{3}m$-YMgH$_{12}$ has a $T_\mathrm{c}$ value of 190 K and a strong electron-phonon coupling constant of 2.18.

Diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond heater for high-pressure synthesis and in-situ transport measurements

Temperature and pressure are essential parameters in the synthesis, evaluation, and application of functional materials. This study proposes the addition of a heating function to a high-pressure diamond anvil cell (DAC) with in-situ measurement probes. The proposed DAC allows for simultaneous control of temperature and pressure within the sample space and can be used to synthesize functional materials under extreme conditions. The various components, namely the heater, thermometer, and measurement probes, were fabricated with a boron-doped diamond epitaxial film and could be used repeatedly. The developed DAC was used to successfully conduct the high-pressure annealing of La(O,F)BiS$_{2}$ single crystal and the high-pressure synthesis of EuFBiS$_{2}$ superconductors. The proposed technique shows promise for further exploration of superconductors to broaden the research field.

High-$T_c$ superconducting hydrides formed by LaH$_{24}$ and YH$_{24}$ cage structures as basic blocks

Based on recent studies regarding high-temperature (high-$T_c$) La-Y ternary hydrides (e.g., $P{\bar{1}}$-La$_2$YH$_{12}$, $Pm{\bar{3}}m$-LaYH$_{12}$, and $Pm{\bar{3}}m$-(La,Y)H$_{10}$ with a maximum $T_c \sim 253$ K), we examined the phase and structural stabilities of the (LaH$_6$)(YH$_6$)$_y$ series as high-$T_c$ ternary hydride compositions using a genetic algorithm and $\it ab$ $\it initio$ calculations. Our evaluation showed that the $Pm\bar{3}m$-LaYH$_{12}$ reported in the previous study was unstable during decomposition into $R\bar{3}c$-LaH$_{6}$ + $Im\bar{3}m$-YH$_{6}$. We also discovered new crystal structures, namely $Cmmm$-LaYH$_{12}$ ($y=1$), $R\bar{3}c$-LaYH$_{12}$ ($y=1$), $Cmmm$-LaY$_3$H$_{24}$ ($y=3$), and $R\bar{3}$-LaY$_3$H$_{24}$ ($y=3$), showing stability against such decomposition. While $R\bar{3}c$ ($y=1$) and $R\bar{3}$ ($y=3$) did not exhibit superconductivity owing to the extremely low density of states at the Fermi level, $Cmmm$ phases exhibited a $T_{c}$ of approximately 140~K at around 200~GPa owing to the extremely high electron--phonon coupling constant ($λ$ = 1.876 for LaYH$_{12}$). By the twice longer stacking for $Cmmm$-LaY$_3$H$_{24}$, the coupling constant increased owing to the chemical pressure of Y, leading to a slightly increased $T_{c}$.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in TiGeTe$_{6}$

Layered ternary transition-metal chalcogenides have been focused as a vein of exploration for superconductors. In this study, TiGeTe$_{6}$ single crystals were synthesized and characterized by structural and valence state analyses and electrical transport measurements. The transport properties were measured under various pressures up to 71 GPa. The activation energy gets smaller as the applied pressure increases, and a signature of a pressure-induced metallization was observed under around 8.4 GPa. Under 13 GPa, pressure-induced superconductivity was discovered in this compound for the first time, with successive drops at 3 K and 6 K in the resistance, indicating the presence of multiple superconducting transitions. The superconducting transition temperature kept increasing as we further applied the pressure to the TiGeTe$_{6}$ single crystal in the performed pressure range, reaching as high as 8.1 K under 71 GPa.

SuperMat: Construction of a linked annotated dataset from superconductors-related publications

A growing number of papers are published in the area of superconducting materials science. However, novel text and data mining (TDM) processes are still needed to efficiently access and exploit this accumulated knowledge, paving the way towards data-driven materials design. Herein, we present SuperMat (Superconductor Materials), an annotated corpus of linked data derived from scientific publications on superconductors, which comprises 142 articles, 16052 entities, and 1398 links that are characterised into six categories: the names, classes, and properties of materials; links to their respective superconducting critical temperature (Tc); and parametric conditions such as applied pressure or measurement methods. The construction of SuperMat resulted from a fruitful collaboration between computer scientists and material scientists, and its high quality is ensured through validation by domain experts. The quality of the annotation guidelines was ensured by satisfactory Inter Annotator Agreement (IAA) between the annotators and the domain experts. SuperMat includes the dataset, annotation guidelines, and annotation support tools that use automatic suggestions to help minimise human errors.

High pressure effects on La(O,F)BiS$_{\mathrm{2}}$ single crystal using diamond anvil cell with dual-probe diamond electrodes

The high-pressure phase of La(O,F)BiS$_{\mathrm{2}}$ exhibits the highest transition temperature among all the BiS$_{\mathrm{2}}$-based superconductors. Various studies, such as investigation of isotope effects, have been conducted to explain its superconducting mechanism. However, there are very few reports on the electrical transport properties and vibration modes of single crystalline La(O,F)BiS$_{\mathrm{2}}$ under high pressure. In this study, we developed a diamond anvil cell with dual-probe diamond electrodes to measure the electrical transport properties of La(O,F)BiS$_{\mathrm{2}}$ single crystal and Pb as a manometer at low temperature. Using the developed system, a linear decrease in the transition temperature and phonon hardening was observed under the application of pressure on La(O,F)BiS$_{\mathrm{2}}$ single crystal.

High-$T_c$ ternary metal hydrides, YKH$_{12}$ and LaKH$_{12}$, discovered by machine learning

The search for hydride compounds that exhibit high $T_c$ superconductivity has been extensively studied. Within the range of binary hydride compounds, the studies have been developed well including data-driven searches as a topic of interest. Toward the search for the ternary systems, the number of possible combinations grows rapidly, and hence the power of data-driven search gets more prominent. In this study, we constructed various regression models to predict $T_c$ for ternary hydride compounds and found the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) regression giving the best performance. The best performed regression predicts new promising candidates realizing higher $T_c$, for which we further identified their possible crystal structures. Confirming their lattice and thermodynamical stabilities, we finally predicted new ternary hydride superconductors, YKH$_{12}$ [$C2/m$ (No.12), $T_c$=143.2 K at 240 GPa] and LaKH$_{12}$ [$R\bar{3}m$ (No.166), $T_c$=99.2 K at 140 GPa] from first principles.

THz emission from a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ cross-whisker junction

Cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (BSCCO) has been a promising candidate of a coherent, continuous, and compact THz light source owing to its intrinsic Josephson junction inside the crystal structure. In this paper, we utilized BSCCO cross-whisker junctions to produce THz emitter device using the whisker crystals which can be easily obtained compared with single crystals. As a result, we have successfully observed the emission from the cross-whisker intrinsic Josephson junction, with frequency of ~0.7 THz. Our findings might enlarge the applicability of BSCCO superconductors for the THz emission source.

High-pressure effects on superconducting properties and crystal structure of Bi-based layered superconductor La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6

The effects of pressure on the superconducting properties of a Bi-based layered superconductor La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6, which possesses a four-layer-type conducting layer, have been studied through the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure under pressure was examined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction at SPring-8. In the low-pressure regime, bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc of ~ 4.5 K was induced by pressure, which was achieved by in-plane chemical pressure effect owing to the compression of the tetragonal structure. In the high-pressure regime above 6.4 GPa, a structural symmetry lowering was observed, and superconducting transitions with a Tc ~ 8 K were observed. Our results suggest the possible commonality on the factor essential for Tc in Bi-based superconductors with two-layer-type and four-layer-type conducting layers.

Enhancement of giant refrigerant capacity in Ho$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{2}$ alloys (0.1 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.4)

Intending to optimize the giant magnetocaloric properties of HoB$_{2}$, we synthesized and magnetocalorically characterized Ho$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{2}$(0.1 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.4) alloys. We found out that Gd enters stoichiometrically and randomly into the Ho site, leading to a Vegard-type structural change. The addition of spherical S$^{7/2}$ Gd$^{3+}$ moments prompts an enhancement in Curie temperature, a reduction in peak value of the magnetic entropy change while still being relatively high, and a broadening of the magnetic entropy change curves. The overall influence is a relatively high refrigerant capacity and relative cooling power, and an extension of the thermal working range to higher temperatures; thus, electing Ho$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{2}$(as potential candidates for cryogenic refrigeration applications.

Growth and anisotropy evaluation of NbBiCh$_3$ (Ch = S, Se) misfit-layered superconducting single crystals

NbBiCh$_3$ (Ch = S, Se) misfit-layered superconducting single crystals were successfully grown using a CsCl/KCl flux for the first time. The obtained crystals had a well-developed habit parallel to the c-plane with a typical width of 1-2 mm and thickness of 10-40 um. The superconducting transition temperatures with zero resistivity of NbBiS$_3$ single crystals obtained from the nominal composition of Nb0.9Bi1.2S3 was 0.31 K, and that value of the NbBiSe$_3$ single crystals grown from the stoichiometry composition (NbBiSe$_3$) was 2.3 K. Sharp decreases in electric resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at approximately 3 K suggested a possible superconducting transition temperature of NbBiSe$_3$. The normal-state anisotropy values of grown NbBiS$_3$ and NbBiSe$_3$ single crystals were 2.2-2.4 and 1.5-1.6, respectively.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in Layered Transition-metal Chalcogenides (Zr,Hf)GeTe$_{4}$ Explored by Data-driven Approach

Layered transition-metal chalcogenides (Zr,Hf)GeTe$_{4}$ were screened out from database of Atomwork as a candidate for pressure-induced superconductivity due to their narrow band gap and high density of state near the Fermi level. The (Zr,Hf)GeTe$_{4}$ samples were synthesized in single crystal and then the compositional ratio, crystal structures, and valence states were investigated via energy dispersive spectrometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The pressure-induced superconductivity in both crystals were first time reported by using a diamond anvil cell with a boron-doped diamond electrode and an undoped diamond insulating layer. The maximum superconducting transition temperatures of ZrGeTe$_{4}$ and HfGeTe$_{4}$ were 6.5 K under 57 GPa and 6.6 K under 60 GPa, respectively.

Electrical transport measurements for superconducting sulfur hydrides using boron-doped diamond electrodes on beveled diamond anvil

A diamond anvil cell (DAC) which can generate extremely high pressure of multi-megabar is promising tool to develop a further physics such a high-transition temperature superconductivity. However, electrical transport measurements, which is one of the most important properties of such functional materials, using the DAC is quite difficult because the sample space is very small and a deformation of electrodes under extreme condition. In this study, we fabricated a boron-doped diamond micro-electrode and an undoped diamond insulation on a beveled culet surface of the diamond anvil. By using the developed DAC, we demonstrated the electrical transport measurements for sulfur hydride H$_2$S which known as a pressure-induced high-transition temperature superconducting H$_3$S at high pressure. The measurements were successfully conducted under high pressure up to 192 GPa, and then a multi-step superconducting transition composed from pure sulfur and some kinds of surfer hydrides, which is possible HS$_2$, was observed with zero resistance.
