Performance evaluation of electron multiplier tubes as a high-intensity muon beam monitor of accelerator neutrino experiments

Upgrade work towards increasing the beam intensity of the neutrino beamline at J- PARC is underway. Monitoring tertiary muon beams is essential for stable operation of the beamline. Accordingly, we plan to replace the present muon monitor sensors with electron multiplier tubes (EMTs). We investigated the radiation tolerance and linearity response of EMTs using a 90 MeV electron beam. An EMTs was irradiated with electrons up to 470 nC. EMTs show higher radiation tolerance than the Si sensors which are presently used as one of the muon monitor detectors for the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment at J-PARC. The integrated charge yield decrease is found to be less than 8% after a beam irradiation equivalent to 132 days of operation at the future J-PARC beam power of 1.3 MW. The EMTs show linearity better than $\pm$5% up to the future beam intensity. The observed yield decrease is likely due to dynode deterioration based on the detailed investigation. The studies described here confirm that EMTs can be used as a high-intensity muon beam monitor. From the reported results, we are proceeding with the installation in the J-PARC neutrino beamline.

Experimental Searches for Muon to Electron Conversion in a Nucleus: COMET, DeeMe, and Mu2e. A Contributed paper for Snowmass 21

Searches for charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) offer deep probes for a range of new physics scenarios, such as super-symmetric models, theories involving scalar leptoquarks or additional Higgs doublets, and models explaining the neutrino mass hierarchy and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. The coherent, neutrinoless conversion of a muon to an electron in the field of a nucleus, $μ^{-}+N\rightarrow e^{-} +N$, is one example of a muonic CLFV process which has sensitivity to this new physics. This paper details three experiments: COMET, DeeMe and Mu2e which will search for $μ^{-}+N\rightarrow e^{-} +N$ in the coming decade. These experiments offer sensitivity up to an effective new physics mass scale of $\mathcal{O}(10^{4}$ TeV/c$^{2}$), going far beyond what can be achieved in direct, collider-based, searches. The theoretical motivation, designs and anticipated timelines for these three experiments are presented. These experiments are a crucial part of a global search for CLFV. Continued support for all planned experimental searches for muonic CLFV is strongly encouraged.

Search for the Wh Production Using High-pT Isolated Like-Sign Dilepton Events in Run-II with 1.9 /fb

We search for the neutral higgs production associated with the $W$ boson using high-$p_{T}$ isolated like-sign dilepton events in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected with the CDF-II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$. We examine the dilepton events on the plane of the 2nd lepton $p_{T}$ ($p_{T2}$) versus the $ p_{T}$ of dilepton system ($p_{T12}$) and tune the final cut to maximize the sensitivity on the plane. We set the final cut to the 2nd lepton $p_{T}$ greater than 20 GeV/c and the $p_{T}$ of dilepton system greater than 15 GeV/c. The expected number of signal events is 0.46 for the fermiophobic higgs of the mass 110 GeV/$c^{2}$ and 0.19 for the mass 160 GeV/$c^{2}$ assuming the Standard Model cross section. The number of events for the Standard Model higgs is 0.02 and 0.18 for 110 GeV/$c^2$ and 160 GeV/$c^{2}$, respectively. The expected number of backgrounds is 3.23 $\pm$ 0.69, while we observed 3 events in the data. From these results, we obtain the limits on $σ(p\bar{p}\to Wh) \times Br(h\to W^{+}W^{-})$ of 2.2 pb for the higgs of 110 GeV/$c^{2}$ and 1.4 pb for 160 GeV/$c^2$ at the 95% confidence level.
