Statistical properties of position-dependent ball-passing networks in football games

Statistical properties of position-dependent ball-passing networks in real football games are examined. We find that the networks have the small-world property, and their degree distributions are fitted well by a truncated gamma distribution function. In order to reproduce these properties of networks, a model based on a Markov chain is proposed.

On a difference in topological nature between Cantor middle-third set and Sierpiński carpet

Both Cantor middle-third set and Sierpiński carpet are self-similar, perfect, compact metric spaces. In spite of the similarity of the mathematical procedure of construction, there exists between them a fundamental difference in topological nature, and this difference affects the methods of construction of an interesting non-trivial quotient space of them. The totally disconnectedness (or, more generally, zero-dimensional) enables Cantor middle-third set to have a non-trivial quotient space which is self-similar. On the other hand, concerning Sierpiński carpet, because of the connectedness of its structure, no non-trivial quotient space which is self-similar can be constructed by such an elegant procedure as that for Cantor middle-third set. Various topologically significant nature specific to Cantor middle-third set owe mainly to the totally disconnectedness of the set.

Dynamical properties in uniform and periodic growth modes of ascorbic acid crystal domain from thin solution film

There exists the threshold-sensitive dynamical transition between the uniform and the periodic growth modes in the domain growth of ascorbic acid crystals from its aqueous supersaturated solution film. The crystal growth induces the solution flow. Humidity controls the fluidity of the solution. The solution flow varies the film thickness. The threshold exists in the thickness of the solution film, and the crystal growth almost stops if the thickness becomes lower than the threshold.

Fractal Structure of Isothermal Lines and Loops on the Cosmic Microwave Background

The statistics of isothermal lines and loops of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation on the sky map is studied and the fractal structure is confirmed in the radiation temperature fluctuation. We estimate the fractal exponents, such as the fractal dimension $D_{\mathrm{e}}$ of the entire pattern of isothermal lines, the fractal dimension $D_{\mathrm{c}}$ of a single isothermal line, the exponent $ζ$ in Korčak's law for the size distribution of isothermal loops, the two kind of Hurst exponents, $H_{\mathrm{e}}$ for the profile of the CMB radiation temperature, and $H_{\mathrm{c}}$ for a single isothermal line. We also perform fractal analysis of two artificial sky maps simulated by a standard model in physical cosmology, the WMAP best-fit $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) model, and by the Gaussian free model of rough surfaces. The temperature fluctuations of the real CMB radiation and in the simulation using the $Λ$CDM model are non-Gaussian, in the sense that the displacement of isothermal lines and loops has an antipersistent property indicated by $H_{\mathrm{e}} \simeq 0.23 < 1/2$.

A solvable model of fracture with power-law distribution of fragment sizes

The present paper describes a stochastic model of fracture, whose fragment size distribution can be calculated analytically as a power-law-like distribution. The model is basically cascade fracture, but incorporates the effect that each fragment in each stage of cascade ceases fracture with a certain probability. When the probability is constant, the exponent of the power-law cumulative distribution lies between -1 and 0, depending not only on the probability but the distribution of fracture points. Whereas, when the probability depends on the size of a fragment, the exponent is less than -1, irrespective of the distribution of fracture points.

Fractal behind smart shopping

The 'minimal' payment - a payment method which minimizes the number of coins in a purse - is presented. We focus on a time series of change given back to a shopper repeating the minimal payment. The delay plot shows visually that the set of successive change possesses a fine structure similar to the Sierpinski gasket. We also estimate effectivity of the minimal-payment method by means of the average number of coins in a purse, and conclude that the minimal-payment strategy is the best to reduce the number of coins in a purse. Moreover, we compare our results to the rule-60 cellular automaton and the Pascal-Sierpinski gaskets, which are known as generators of the discrete Sierpinski gasket.

Topological self-similarity on the random binary-tree model

Asymptotic analysis on some statistical properties of the random binary-tree model is developed. We quantify a hierarchical structure of branching patterns based on the Horton-Strahler analysis. We introduce a transformation of a binary tree, and derive a recursive equation about branch orders. As an application of the analysis, topological self-similarity and its generalization is proved in an asymptotic sense. Also, some important examples are presented.

Numerical Approach to Central Limit Theorem for Bifurcation Ratio of Random Binary Tree

A central limit theorem for binary tree is numerically examined. Two types of central limit theorem for higher-order branches are formulated. A topological structure of a binary tree is expressed by a binary sequence, and the Horton-Strahler indices are calculated by using the sequence. By fitting the Gaussian distribution function to our numerical data, the values of variances are determined and written in simple forms.

Network of two-Chinese-character compound words in Japanese language

Some statistical properties of a network of two-Chinese-character compound words in Japanese language are reported. In this network, a node represents a Chinese character and an edge represents a two-Chinese-character compound word. It is found that this network has properties of "small-world" and "scale-free." A network formed by only Chinese characters for common use ({\it joyo-kanji} in Japanese), which is regarded as a subclass of the original network, also has small-world property. However, a degree distribution of the network exhibits no clear power law. In order to reproduce disappearance of the power-law property, a model for a selecting process of the Chinese characters for common use is proposed.

Bouncing gel balls: impact of soft gels onto rigid surface

After thrown onto a solid substrate, very soft spherical gels bounce repeatedly. Separate rheological measurements suggest that these balls can be treated as nearly elastic. The Hertz contact deformation expected in the static (elastic) limit was observed only at very small impact velocities. For larger velocities, the gel ball deformed into flattened forms like a pancake. We measured the size of the gel balls at the maximal deformation and the contact time as a function of velocities for the samples different in the original spherical radius and the Young modulus. The experimental results revealed a number of scaling relations. To interpret these relations, we developed scaling arguments to propose a physical picture.
