Extended flat-bands, entanglement and topological properties in a Creutz ladder

In this work, we study the entanglement and topological properties of an extended flat-band Creutz ladder by considering a compacted localized state (CLS). Based on the CLS picture, we find a multiple flat-band extension from the conventional two flat-band Creutz ladder. A simple vertical inter-chain coupling leads to a four complete flat-band system and creates an additive $π$-flux pattern on the Creutz ladder. Interestingly, the strong coupling induces a topological phase transition where the distribution of CLSs is modified: upper and lower flat-band CLSs are paired up. This pairing leads to the destruction of the CLS' entanglement and, hence, to a vanishing edge mode (i.e., the breakdown of non-trivial topological phase). Finally, we study the localization dynamics induced by the presence of complete flat bands in this extended flat-band system.

Flat-band many-body localization and ergodicity breaking in the Creutz ladder

We study disorder-free many-body localization in the flat-band Creutz ladder, which was recently realized in cold-atoms in an optical lattice. In a non-interacting case, the flat-band structure of the system leads to a Wannier wavefunction localized on four adjacent lattice sites. In the flat-band regime both with and without interactions, the level spacing analysis exhibits Poisson-like distribution indicating the existence of disorder-free localization. Calculations of the inverse participation ratio support this observation. Interestingly, this type of localization is robust to weak disorders, whereas for strong disorders, the system exhibits a crossover into the conventional disorder-induced many-body localizated phase. Physical picture of this crossover is investigated in detail. We also observe non-ergodic dynamics in the flat-band regime without disorder. The memory of an initial density wave pattern is preserved for long times.

Topological order versus many-body localization in periodically modulated spin chains

In this paper, we study periodically modulated $s=1/2$ spin chain in a linear gradient potential (LP) that is generated by an external magnetic field. In the absence of the LP, the system has topological states that exhibit a magnetization plateau for a uniform external magnetic field. These topological states have a finite integer Chern number and their stability is clarified by an equivalent spinless fermion system derived by a Jordan-Wigner transformation. We show that the LP, which is nothing but a constant electric field in the spinless fermion system, destabilizes the topological states, because it induces localization called Wannier-Stark (WS) localization. We clarify the phase diagram in the presence of the LP and on-site diagonal disorder. To this end, we carefully study edge excitations under the open boundary condition, which are a hallmark of the topological order. We find a very interesting phenomenon indicating existence of a quasi-edge modes that take the place of the genuine edge modes in certain parameter regions. This is a precursor of the WS localization realized in topological states. Finally, we investigate many-body localization induced by a sufficiently strong LP or disorder. To this end, we study the energy-level statistics for whole energy levels, and find unexpected extended-state regimes located in intermediate potential-gradient and weak on-site disorder regimes. We verify this phenomenon by calculating variance of the entanglement entropy. The present system is closely related to quantum Hall state in two dimensions, and therefore our findings can be observed not only in experiments on ultra-cold atomic gases but also quantum Hall physics.

Many-body-localization induced protection of symmetry-protected topological order in a XXZ spin model

There is a counter-intuitive expectation proposed by Huse {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 88}, 014206 (2013)], and Chandran {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B 89,144201 (2014)]: Localization protects quantum order of groundstate even in high excited eigenstates. In this work, we numerically investigate the localization protection for symmetry-protected-topological (SPT) order by considering a modified XXZ spin model, related to an interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We systematically study how Many-body-localization (MBL) protects SPT for different disorder types and different forms of interactions. A certain disorder leads the clear degeneracy of the low-lying entanglement spectrum of each excited many-body eigenstates. This fact indicates that existence of edge modes, which is a hallmark of the SPT order, is protected by the MBL in excited many-body eigenstates. In addition, we also report how the MBL protected edge modes in excited many-body eigenstates fade away for a diagonal type disorder.

Disorder-induced Chern insulator in Harper--Hofstadter--Hatsugai model

We study the effects of disorder on the topological Chern insulating phase in the Harper--Hofstadter--Hatsugai (HHH) model. The model with half flux has a bulk band gap and thus exhibits a nontrivial topological phase. We consider two typical types of disorder: on-site random disorder and the Aubry--Andre type quasi-periodic potential. Using the coupling matrix method, we clarify the global topological phase diagram in terms of the Chern number. The disorder modifies the gap closing behavior of the system. This modification induces the Chern insulating phase even in the trivial phase parameter regime of the system in the clean limit. Moreover, we consider an interacting Rice--Mele model with disorder, which can be obtained by dimensional reduction of the HHH model. Moderately strong disorder leads to an increase in revival events of the Chern insulator at a specific parameter point.

Glassy Dynamics from Quark Confinement: Atomic Quantum Simulation of Gauge-Higgs Model on Lattice

In the previous works, we proposed atomic quantum simulations of the U(1) gauge-Higgs model by ultra-cold Bose gases. By studying extended Bose-Hubbard models (EBHMs) including long-range repulsions, we clarified the locations of the confinement, Coulomb and Higgs phases. In this paper, we study the EBHM with nearest-neighbor repulsions in one and two dimensions at large fillings by the Gutzwiller variational method. We obtain phase diagrams and investigate dynamical behavior of electric flux from the gauge-theoretical point of view. We also study if the system exhibits glassy quantum dynamics in the absence and presence of quenched disorder. We explain that the obtained results have a natural interpretation in the gauge theory framework. Our results suggest important perspective on many-body localization in strongly-correlated systems. They are also closely related to anomalously slow dynamics observed by recent experiments performed on Rydberg atom chain, and our study indicates existence of similar phenomenon in two-dimensional space.

Non-adiabatic extension of the Zak phase and charge pumping in the Rice--Mele model

In this study, the Landau--Zener (LZ) transition method is applied to investigate a weak non-adiabatic effect on the Zak phase and the topological charge pumping in the Rice--Mele model. The non-adiabatic effect is formulated using the LZ transfer matrix. The effective lower band wave function picks up the Stokes phase as well as the usual dynamical phase through two avoided crossings appearing in the two band instantaneous energy spectrum. The interference effect from the upper band has a decisive influence on the decay behavior of the lower band population. A non-adiabatic extension of the Zak phase can then be formulated, corresponding to the center of mass of the lower band Wannier function. Furthermore, we estimate the validity of the LZ formalism and verify the breakdown of the quantization of the topological charge pumping by changing the sweeping speed.

Phase structure of the interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the relationship with the Gross-Neveu model on lattice

The $N$-flavor interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (i-SSH) model realizable in cold-atoms in an optical lattice is studied. We clarify the relationship between the i-SSH model and the Chiral-Gross-Neveu-Wilson (CGNW) model. Following the previous study of the CGNW model in the high-energy physics community, the groundstate phases of the i-SSH model are investigated and interpreted from the view of the phases of the CGNW model. The interaction effect on the i-SSH model, belonging to the topological BDI class, is grasped by following the view of the dynamical breakdown of chiral symmetry in the CGNW model. Furthermore, we compare the large-$N$ groundstate phase diagram with that of the $N=1$ case obtained by exact diagonalization and then propose a table-top cold-atom quantum simulator to test the model.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of multiple second-order quantum phase transitions in extended Bose-Hubbard model: Superfluid, supersolid and density wave

In this paper, we study the dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model with the nearest-neighbor repulsion by using time-dependent Gutzwiller methods. Near the unit filling, the phase diagram of the model contains density wave (DW), supersolid (SS) and superfluid (SF). The three phases are separated by two second-order phase transitions. We study "slow-quench" dynamics by varying the hopping parameter in the Hamiltonian as a function of time. In the phase transitions from the DW to SS and from the DW to SF, we focus on how the SF order forms and study scaling laws of the SF correlation length, vortex density, etc. The results are compared with the Kibble-Zurek scaling. On the other hand from the SF to DW, we study how the DW order evolves with generation of the domain walls and vortices. Measurement of first-order SF coherence reveals interesting behavior in the DW regime.

Dynamics of first-order quantum phase transitions in extended Bose-Hubbard model: From density wave to superfluid and vice-versa

In this paper, we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model with the nearest-neighbor repulsion by using time-dependent Gutzwiller (GW) methods. In particular, we vary the hopping parameters in the Hamiltonian as a function of time, and investigate the dynamics of the system from the density wave (DW) to the superfluid (SF) crossing a first-order phase transition and vice-versa. From the DW to SF, we find scaling laws for the correlation length and vortex density with respect to the quench time. This is a reminiscence of the Kibble-Zurek scaling for continuous phase transitions and contradicts the common expectation. We give a possible explanation for this observation. On the other hand from the SF to DW, the system evolution depends on the initial SF state. When the initial state is the ground-state obtained by the static GW methods, a coexisting state of the SF and DW domains forms after passing through the critical point. Coherence of the SF order parameter is lost as the system evolves. This is a phenomenon similar to the glass transition in classical systems. When the state starts from the SF with small local phase fluctuations, the system obtains a large-size DW-domain structure with thin domain walls.

Generalized lattice Wilson-Dirac fermions in (1+1) dimensions for atomic quantum simulation and topological phases

The Dirac fermion is an important fundamental particle appearing in high-energy physics and topological insulator physics. In particular, a Dirac fermion in a one-dimensional lattice system exhibits the essential properties of topological physics. However, the system has not been quantum simulated in experiments yet. Herein, we propose a one-dimensional generalized lattice Wilson-Dirac fermion model and study its topological phase structure. We show the experimental setups of an atomic quantum simulator for the model, in which two parallel optical lattices with the same tilt for trapping cold fermion atoms and a laser-assisted hopping scheme are used. Interestingly, we find that the model exhibits nontrivial topological phases characterized by gapless edge modes and a finite winding number in the broad regime of the parameter space. Some of the phase diagrams closely resemble those of the Haldane model. We also discuss topological charge pumping and a lattice Gross-Neveu model in the system of generalized Wilson-Dirac fermions.

Dynamics of a quantum phase transition in the Bose-Hubbard model: Kibble-Zurek mechanism and beyond

In this paper, we study the dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model by using time-dependent Gutzwiller methods. In particular, we vary the parameters in the Hamiltonian as a function of time, and investigate the temporal behavior of the system from the Mott insulator to the superfluid (SF) crossing a second-order phase transition. We first solve a time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the experimental setup recently done by Braun et.al. [Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 112, 3641 (2015)] and show that the numerical and experimental results are in fairly good agreement. However, these results disagree with the Kibble-Zurek scaling. From our numerical study, we reveal a possible source of the discrepancy. Next, we calculate the critical exponents of the correlation length and vortex density in addition to the SF order parameter for a Kibble-Zurek protocol. We show that beside the "freeze" time $\hat{t}$, there exists another important time, $t_{\rm eq}$, at which an oscillating behavior of the SF amplitude starts. From calculations of the exponents of the correlation length and vortex density with respect to a quench time $\tQ$, we obtain a physical picture of a coarsening process. Finally, we study how the system evolves after the quench. We give a global picture of dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model.

Various Topological Mott insulators in strongly-interacting boson system in one-dimensional superlattice

In this paper, we study a one-dimensional boson system in a superlattice potential. This system is experimentally feasible by using ultracold atomic gases, and attracts much attention these days. It is expected that the system has a topological phase called topological Mott insulator (TMI). We show that in strongly-interacting cases, the competition between the superlattice potential and the on-site interaction leads to various TMIs with non-vanishing integer Chern number. Compared to hard-core case, the soft-core boson system exhibits rich phase diagrams including various non-trivial TMIs. By using the exact diagonalization,we obtain detailed bulk-global phase diagrams including the TMIs with high Chern numbers and also various non-topological phases. We also show that in adiabatic experimental setups, the strongly-interacting bosonic TMIs exhibit the topological particle transfer, i.e., topological charge pumping phenomenon, similarly to weakly-interacting systems. The various TMIs are characterized by topological charge pumping as it is closely related to the Chern number, and therefor the Chern number is to be observed in feasible experiments.

Quantum simulation of $(1+1)$-dimensional U(1) gauge-Higgs model on a lattice by cold Bose gases

We present a theoretical study of quantum simulations of $(1+1)$-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge-Higgs models, which contain a compact U(1) gauge field and a Higgs matter field, by using ultra-cold bosonic gases on a one-dimensional optical lattice. Starting from the extended Bose-Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, we derive the U(1) lattice gauge-Higgs model as a low-energy effective theory. The derived gauge-Higgs model exhibits nontrivial phase transitions between confinement and Higgs phases, and we discuss the relation with the phase transition in the extended Bose-Hubbard model. Finally, we study real-time dynamics of an electric flux by the Gross-Pitaevskii equations and the truncated Wigner approximation. The dynamics is governed by a bosonic analog of the Schwinger mechanism, i.e., shielding of an electric flux by a condensation of Higgs fields, which occurs differently in the Higgs and the confinement phase. These results, together with the obtained phase diagrams, shall guide experimentalists in designing quantum simulations of the gauge-Higgs models by cold gases.

Phase diagrams of the extended Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by Monte-Carlo simulation with the help of a stochastic-series expansion

In this paper, we study phase diagrams of the extended Bose-Hubbard model (EBHM) in one dimension by means of the quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulation using the stochastic-series expansion (SSE).In the EBHM, there exists a nearest-neighbor repulsion as well as the on-site repulsion. In the SSE-QMC simulation, the highest particle number at each site, $n_c$, is also a controllable parameter, and we found that the phase diagrams depend on the value of $n_c$. It is shown that in addition to the Mott insulator, superfluid, density wave, the phase so-called Haldane insulator and supersolid appear in the phase diagrams, and their locations in the phase diagrams are clarified.

Vortex dynamics in lattice Bose gases in a synthesized magnetic field with a random noise and a dissipation: Study by the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this paper, we investigate vortex dynamics in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model coupled with a weak artificial magnetic field, a random white noise and a dissipation. Origin of the noise and dissipation is considered as thermal fluctuations of atoms that do not participate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Solving a stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation to this system, we show that the interplay of the magnetic field and the white noise generates vortices in the bulk of the BEC and stable steady states of vortices form after a transition period. We calculate the incompressible part of the kinetic-energy spectrum of the BEC. In the transition period, a Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum appears in the infrared regime with the wave number $k$, $k<ζ^{-1}$, where $ζ$ is the healing length, whereas in the ultraviolet region, $k>ζ^{-1}$, the spectrum behaves as $k^{-3}$. On the other hand in the steady states, another scaling low appears. We find a relationship between the above mentioned kinetic-energy spectra and the velocity of vortices. By an inverse cascade, the large velocity of a few created vortices develops the Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum.

Bosonic Analogs of Fractional Quantum Hall State in the Vicinity of Mott States

In the present paper, the Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) with the nearest-neighbor (NN) repulsions is studied from the view point of possible bosonic analogs of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state in the vicinity of the Mott insulator (MI). First, by means of the Gutzwiller approximation, we obtain the phase diagram of the BHM in a magnetic field. Then, we introduce an effective Hamiltonian describing excess particles on a MI and calculate the vortex density, momentum distribution and the energy gap. These calculations indicate that the vortex solid forms for small NN repulsions, but a homogeneous featureless `Bose-metal' takes the place of it as the NN repulsion increases. We consider particular filling factors at which the bosonic FQH state is expected to form. Chern-Simons (CS) gauge theory to the excess particle is introduced, and a modified Gutzwiller wave function, which describes bosons with attached flux quanta, is introduced. The energy of the excess particles in the bosonic FQH state is calculated using that wave function, and it is compared with the energy of the vortex solid and Bose-metal. We found that the energy of the bosonic FQH state is lower than that of the Bose-metal and comparable with the vortex solid. Finally, we clarify the condition that the composite fermion appears by using CS theory on the lattice that we previously proposed for studying the electron FQH effect.

Atomic quantum simulation of a three-dimensional U(1) gauge-Higgs model

In this paper, we study theoretically atomic quantum simulations of a U(1) gauge-Higgs model on a three-dimensional (3D) spatial lattice by using an extended Bose-Hubbard model with intersite repulsions on a 3D optical lattice. Here, the phase and density fluctuations of the boson variable on each site of the optical lattice describe the vector potential and the electric field on each link of the gauge-model lattice, respectively. The target gauge model is different from the standard Wilson-type U(1) gauge-Higgs model because it has plaquette and Higgs interactions with asymmetric couplings in the space-time directions. Nevertheless, the corresponding quantum simulation is still important as it provides us with a platform to study unexplored time-dependent phenomena characteristic of each phase in the general gauge-Higgs models. To determine the phase diagram of the gauge-Higgs model at zero temperature, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations of the corresponding 3+1-dimensional U(1) gauge-Higgs model, and obtain the confinement and Higgs phases. To investigate the dynamical properties of the gauge-Higgs model, we apply the Gross-Pitaevskii equations to the extended Bose-Hubbard model. We simulate the time-evolution of an electric flux that initially is put on a straight line connecting two external point charges. We also calculate the potential energy between this pair of charges and obtain the string tension in the confinement phase. Finally, we propose a feasible experimental setup for the atomic simulations of this quantum gauge-Higgs model on the 3D optical lattice. These results may serve as theoretical guides for future experiments.
