Square integrability of regular representations on reductive homogeneous spaces

Let $G$ be a real reductive Lie group and $H$ a reductive subgroup of $G$. Benoist-Kobayashi studied when $L^2(G/H)$ is a tempered representation of $G$ and in particular they gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the temperedness in terms of certain functions on Lie algebras. In this paper, we consider when $L^2(G/H)$ is equivalent to a unitary subrepresentation of $L^2(G)$ and we will give a sufficient condition for this in terms of functions introduced by Benoist-Kobayashi. As a corollary, we prove the non-existence of discrete series for homogeneous spaces $G/H$ satisfying certain conditions.

On the asymptotic support of Plancherel measures for homogeneous spaces

Let $G$ be a real linear reductive group and let $H$ be a unimodular, locally algebraic subgroup. Let $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ be the set of irreducible unitary representations of $G$ contributing to the decomposition of $L^2(G/H)$, namely the support of the Plancherel measure. In this paper, we will relate $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ with the image of moment map from the cotangent bundle $T^*(G/H)\to \mathfrak{g}^*$. For the homogeneous space $X=G/H$, we attach a complex Levi subgroup $L_X$ of the complexification of $G$ and we show that in some sense "most" of representations in $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ are obtained as quantizations of coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}$ such that $\mathcal{O}\simeq G/L$ and that the complexification of $L$ is conjugate to $L_X$. Moreover, the union of such coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}$ coincides asymptotically with the moment map image. As a corollary, we show that $L^2(G/H)$ has a discrete series if the moment map image contains a nonempty subset of elliptic elements.

Restriction of irreducible unitary representations of Spin(N,1) to parabolic subgroups

In this paper, we obtain explicit branching laws for all irreducible unitary representations of $\Spin(N,1)$ restricted to a parabolic subgroup $P$. The restriction turns out to be a finite direct sum of irreducible unitary representations of $P$. We also verify Duflo's conjecture for the branching law of tempered representations of $\Spin(N,1)$ with respect to a parabolic subgroup $P$. That is to show: in the framework of the orbit method, the branching law of a tempered representation is determined by the behavior of the moment map from the corresponding coadjoint orbit. A few key tools used in this work include: Fourier transform, Knapp-Stein intertwining operator, Casselman-Wallach globalization, Zuckerman translation principle, du Cloux's results for smooth representations of semi-algebraic groups.

Collapsing K3 Surfaces and Moduli Compactification

This note is a summary of our work [OO] which provides an explicit and global moduli-theoretic framework for the collapsing of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics and we use it to study especially the K3 surfaces case. For instance, it allows us to discuss their Gromov-Hausdorff limits along any sequences, which are even not necessarily "maximally degenerating". Our results also give a proof of Kontsevich-Soibelman [KS04, Conjecture 1] (cf., [GW00, Conjecture 6.2]) in the case of K3 surfaces as a byproduct.

Irreducible Characters and Semisimple Coadjoint Orbits

When $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is a real, linear algebraic group, the orbit method predicts that nearly all of the unitary dual of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ consists of representations naturally associated to orbital parameters $(\mathcal{O},Γ)$. If $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is a real, reductive group and $\mathcal{O}$ is a semisimple coadjoint orbit, the corresponding unitary representation $π(\mathcal{O},Γ)$ may be constructed utilizing Vogan and Zuckerman's cohomological induction together with Mackey's real parabolic induction. In this article, we give a geometric character formula for such representations $π(\mathcal{O},Γ)$. Special cases of this formula were previously obtained by Harish-Chandra and Kirillov when $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is compact and by Rossmann and Duflo when $π(\mathcal{O},Γ)$ is tempered.

Determinant Formula for Parabolic Verma Modules of Lie Superalgebras

We prove a determinant formula for a parabolic Verma module of a Lie superalgebra, previously conjectured by the second author. Our determinant formula generalizes the previous results of Jantzen for a parabolic Verma module of a (non-super) Lie algebra, and of Kac concerning a (non-parabolic) Verma module for a Lie superalgebra. The resulting formula is expected to have a variety of applications in the study of higher-dimensional supersymmetric conformal field theories. We also discuss irreducibility criteria for the Verma module.

Knapp-Stein type intertwining operators for symmetric pairs

For a symmetric pair $(G,H)$ of reductive groups we construct a family of intertwining operators between spherical principal series representations of $G$ and $H$ that are induced from parabolic subgroups satisfying certain compatibility conditions. The operators are given explicitly in terms of their integral kernels and we prove convergence of the integrals for an open set of parameters and meromorphic continuation. We further discuss uniqueness of intertwining operators, and for the rank one cases $$ (G,H)=(SU(1,n;\mathbb{F}),S(U(1,m;\mathbb{F})\times U(n-m;\mathbb{F}))), \qquad \mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C},\mathbb{H},\mathbb{O}, $$ and for the pair $$ (G,H)=(GL(4n,\mathbb{R}),GL(2n,\mathbb{C})) $$ we show that for a certain choice of maximal parabolic subgroups our operators generically span the space of intertwiners.

Restriction of some unitary representations of O(1,N) to symmetric subgroups

We find the complete branching law for the restriction of certain unitary representations of $O(1,n+1)$ to the subgroups $O(1,m+1)\times O(n-m)$, $0\leq m\leq n$. The unitary representations we consider belong either to the unitary spherical principal series, the spherical complementary series or are unitarizable subquotients of the spherical principal series. In the crucial case $0<m<n$ the decomposition consists of a continuous part and a discrete part. The continuous part is given by a direct integral of unitary principal series representations whereas the discrete part consists of finitely many representations which either belong to the complementary series or are unitarizable subquotients of the principal series. The explicit Plancherel formula is computed on the Fourier transformed side of the non-compact realization of the representations by using the spectral decomposition of a certain hypergeometric type ordinary differential operator. The main tool connecting this differential operator with the representations are second order Bessel operators which describe the Lie algebra action in this realization. To derive the spectral decomposition of the ordinary differential operator we use Kodaira's formula for the spectral decomposition of Schrödinger type operators.

Discrete branching laws for minimal holomorphic representations

We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of minimal holomorphic representations to symmetric subgroups in the case where the restriction is discretely decomposable. For holomorphic pairs the minimal holomorphic representation decomposes into a direct sum of lowest weight representations which is made explicit. For non-holomorphic pairs the restriction is shown to be irreducible and identified with a known representation. We further study a conjecture by Kobayashi on the behaviour of associated varieties under restriction and confirm this conjecture in the setting of this paper.

On orbits in double flag varieties for symmetric pairs

Let $ G $ be a connected, simply connected semisimple algebraic group over the complex number field, and let $ K $ be the fixed point subgroup of an involutive automorphism of $ G $ so that $ (G, K) $ is a symmetric pair. We take parabolic subgroups $ P $ of $ G $ and $ Q $ of $ K $ respectively and consider the product of partial flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ K/Q $ with diagonal $ K $-action, which we call a \emph{double flag variety for symmetric pair}. It is said to be \emph{of finite type} if there are only finitely many $ K $-orbits on it. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $ K $-orbits on $ G/P \times K/Q $ in terms of quotient spaces of unipotent groups without assuming the finiteness of orbits. If one of $ P \subset G $ or $ Q \subset K $ is a Borel subgroup, the finiteness of orbits is closely related to spherical actions. In such cases, we give a complete classification of double flag varieties of finite type, namely, we obtain classifications of $ K $-spherical flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ G $-spherical homogeneous spaces $ G/Q $.

Localization of cohomological induction

We give a geometric realization of cohomologically induced (g,K)-modules. Let (h,L) be a subpair of (g,K). The cohomological induction is an algebraic construction of (g,K)-modules from a (h,L)-module V. For a real semisimple Lie group, the duality theorem by Hecht, Milicic, Schmid, and Wolf relates (g,K)-modules cohomologically induced from a Borel subalgebra with D-modules on the flag variety of g. In this article we extend the theorem for more general pairs (g,K) and (h,L). We consider the tensor product of a D-module and a certain module associated with V, and prove that its sheaf cohomology groups are isomorphic to cohomologically induced modules.

Classification of symmetric pairs with discretely decomposable restrictions of (g,K)-modules

We give a complete classification of reductive symmetric pairs (g, h) with the following property: there exists at least one infinite-dimensional irreducible (g,K)-module X that is discretely decomposable as an (h,H \cap K)-module. We investigate further if such X can be taken to be a minimal representation, a Zuckerman derived functor module A_q(λ), or some other unitarizable (g,K)-module. The tensor product $π_1 \otimes π_2$ of two infinite-dimensional irreducible (g,K)-modules arises as a very special case of our setting. In this case, we prove that $π_1 \otimes π_2$ is discretely decomposable if and only if they are simultaneously highest weight modules.

On the restriction of Zuckerman's derived functor modules A_q(λ) to reductive subgroups

In this article, we study the restriction of Zuckerman's derived functor (g,K)-modules A_q(λ) to g' for symmetric pairs of reductive Lie algebras (g,g'). When the restriction decomposes into irreducible (g',K')-modules, we give an upper bound for the branching law. In particular, we prove that each (g',K')-module occurring in the restriction is isomorphic to a submodule of A_q'(λ') for a parabolic subalgebra q' of g', and determine their associated varieties. For the proof, we construct A_q(λ) on complex partial flag varieties by using D-modules.

Classification of discretely decomposable A_q(λ) with respect to reductive symmetric pairs

We give a classification of the triples (g,g',q) such that Zuckerman's derived functor (g,K)-module A_q(λ) for a θ-stable parabolic subalgebra q is discretely decomposable with respect to a reductive symmetric pair (g,g'). The proof is based on the criterion for discretely decomposable restrictions by the first author and on Berger's classification of reductive symmetric pairs.
