A classification of pure states on quantum spin chains satisfying the split property with on-site finite group symmetries

We consider a set $SPG(\mathcal{A})$ of pure split states on a quantum spin chain $\mathcal{A}$ which are invariant under the on-site action $τ$ of a finite group $G$. For each element $ω$ in $SPG(\mathcal{A})$ we can associate a second cohomology class $c_{ω,R}$of $G$. We consider a classification of $SPG(\mathcal{A})$ whose criterion is given as follows: $ω_{0}$ and $ω_{1}$ in $SPG(\mathcal{A})$ are equivalent if there are automorphisms $Ξ_{R}$, $Ξ_L$ on $\mathcal{A}_{R}$, $\mathcal{A}_{L}$ (right and left half infinite chains) preserving the symmetry $τ$, such that $ω_{1}$ and $ω_{0}\circ( Ξ_{L}\otimes Ξ_{R})$ are quasi-equivalent. It means that we can move $ω_{0}$ close to $ω_{1}$ without changing the entanglement nor breaking the symmetry. We show that the second cohomology class $c_{ω,R}$ is the complete invariant of this classification.

Automorphic equivalence within gapped phases in the bulk

We develop a new adiabatic theorem for unique gapped ground states which does not require the gap for local Hamiltonians. We instead require a gap in the bulk and a smoothness of expectation values of sub-exponentially localized observables in the unique gapped ground state $φ_s(A)$. This requirement is weaker than the requirement of the gap of the local Hamiltonians, since a uniform spectral gap for finite dimensional ground states implies a gap in the bulk for unique gapped ground states, as well as the smoothness.

A ${\mathbb Z}_2$-index of symmetry protected topological phases with reflection symmetry for quantum spin chains

For the classification of SPT phases, defining an index is a central problem. In the famous paper [PTBO1], Pollmann, Tuner, Berg, and Oshikawa introduced ${\mathbb Z}_2$-indices for injective matrix products states (MPS) which have either ${\mathbb Z}_2\times {\mathbb Z}_2$ dihedral group (of $π$-rotations about $x$, $y$, and $z$-axes) symmetry, time-reversal symmetry, or reflection symmetry. The first two are on-site symmetries. In [O4], an index for on-site symmetries, which generalizes the index in [PTBO1], was introduced for general unique gapped ground state phases in quantum spin chains. It was proved that the index is an invariant of the $C^1$-classification of SPT phases. The index for the reflection symmetry, which is not an on-site symmetry, was left as an open question. In this paper, we introduce a ${\mathbb Z}_2$-index for the reflection symmetric unique gapped ground state phases, and complete the generalization problem of index by Pollmann et.al. We also show that the index is an invariant of the $C^1$-classification.

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorems for quantum spin chains without continuous symmetry

We prove that a quantum spin chain with half-odd-integral spin cannot have a unique ground state with a gap, provided that the interaction is short ranged, translation invariant, and possesses time-reversal symmetry or ${\mathbb Z}_2 \times {\mathbb Z}_2$ symmetry (i.e., the symmetry with respect to the $π$ rotations of spins about the three orthogonal axes). The proof is based on the deep analogy between the matrix product state formulation and the representation of the Cuntz algebra in the von Neumann algebra $π({\mathcal A}_{R})''$ constructed from the ground state restricted to the right half-infinite chain.

A class of asymmetric gapped Hamiltonians on quantum spin chains and its characterization II

We give a characterization of the class of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in PartI [O]. The Hamiltonians in this class are given as MPS (Matrix product state) Hamiltonians. In [O], we list up properties of ground state structures of Hamiltonians in this class. In this Part II, we show the converse. Namely, if a (not necessarily MPS) Hamiltonian $H$ satisfies five of the listed properties, there is a Hamiltonian $H'$ from the class in [O], satisfying the followings: The ground state spaces of the two Hamiltonians on the infinite intervals coincide. The spectral projections onto the ground state space of $H$ on each finite intervals are approximated by that of $H'$ exponentially well, with respect to the interval size. The latter property has an application to the classification problem.

A class of asymmetric gapped Hamiltonians on quantum spin chains and its characterization III

In this paper, we consider classification problem of asymmetric gapped Hamiltonians, which are given as the non-degenerate part of the Hamiltonians introduced in [O1]. We consider the $C^1$-classification, which takes into account the effect of boundaries. We show that the left and right degeneracies of edge ground states are the complete invariant. As a corollary, we consider the bulk-classification problem. We study Hamiltonians that1.are given by translation invariant finite range interactions, 2.are gapped in the bulk, 3.are frustration-free, 4.have uniformly bounded ground state degeneracy on finite intervals, and 5.have a unique bulk ground state. We show that for the bulk-classification, any such Hamiltonians are equivalent.

C^1-Classification of gapped parent Hamiltonians of quantum spin chains with local symmetry

We consider the family of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in [FNW] on the quantum spin chains $\bigotimes_{\mathbb Z}\mathop{\mathrm{M}}\nolimits_n$, with local symmetry given by a group $G$. The $G$-symmetric gapped Hamiltonians are given by triples $(k,u,V)$, where $u$ is a projective unitary representation of $G$ on a finite dimensional space ${\mathbb C}^k$, and $V$ is an isometry from ${\mathbb C}^k$ to ${\mathbb C}^n\otimes {\mathbb C}^k$. We show that Hamiltonians $H_0,H_1$, given by the triples $(k^{(0)}, u^{(0)}, V^{(0)})$ and $(k^{(1)}, u^{(1)}, V^{(1)})$ are $C^1$-equivalent if the projective representations $u^{(0)}$ and $u^{(1)}$ are unitary equivalent.

$C^1$-classification of gapped parent Hamiltonians of quantum spin chains

We consider the $C^1$-classification of gapped Hamiltonians introduced in [Fannes-Nachtergaele-Werner, Nachtergaele] as parents Hamiltonians of translation invariant finitely correlated states. Within this family, we show that the number of edge modes, which is equal at the left and right edge, is the complete invariant. The construction proves that translation invariance of the `bulk' ground state does not need to be broken to establish $C^1$-equivalence, namely that the spin chain does not need to be blocked.

Normal states of type III factors

Let M be a factor of type III with separable predual and with normal states phi_1,...,phi_k, omega with omega faithful. Let A be a finite dimensional C*-subalgebra of M. Then it is shown that there is a unitary operator u in M such that phi_i Ad u =omega on A for i=1,...,k. This follows from an embedding result of a finite dimensional C*-algebra with a faithful state into M with finitely many given states. We also give similar embedding results of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras with faithful states into M. Another similar result for a factor of type II_1 instead of type III holds.

Approximating macroscopic observables in quantum spin systems with commuting matrices

Macroscopic observables in a quantum spin system are given by sequences of spatial means of local elements $\frac{1}{2n+1}\sum_{j=-n}^nγ_j(A_{i}), \; n\in{\mathbb N},\; i=1,...,m$ in a UHF algebra. One of their properties is that they commute asymptotically, as $n$ goes to infinity. It is not true that any given set of asymptotically commuting matrices can be approximated by commuting ones in the norm topology. In this paper, we show that for macroscopic observables, this is true.

Ruelle-Lanford functions for quantum spin systems

We prove a large deviation principle for the expectation of macroscopic observables in quantum (and classical) Gibbs states. Our proof is based on Ruelle-Lanford functions and direct subadditivity arguments, as in the classical case, instead of relying on Gärtner-Ellis theorem, and cluster expansion or transfer operators as done in the quantum case. In this approach we recover, expand, and unify quantum (and classical) large deviation results for lattice Gibbs states. In the companion paper \cite{OR} we discuss the characterization of rate functions in terms of relative entropies.

Large Deviations in Quantum Spin Chain

We show the full large deviation principle for KMS-states and $C^*$-finitely correlated states on a quantum spin chain. We cover general local observables. Our main tool is Ruelle's transfer operator method.

Remote extraction and destruction of spread qubit information

Necessary and sufficient conditions for deterministic remote extraction and destruction of qubit information encoded in bipartite states using only local operations and classical communications (LOCC) are presented. The conditions indicate that there is a way to asymmetrically spread qubit information between two parties such that it can be remotely extracted with unit probability at one of the parties but not at the other as long as they are using LOCC. Remote destruction can also be asymmetric between the two parties, but the conditions are incompatible with those for remote extraction.

Propagation of Correlations in Quantum Lattice Systems

We provide a simple proof of the Lieb-Robinson bound and use it to prove the existence of the dynamics for interactions with polynomial decay. We then use our results to demonstrate that there is an upper bound on the rate at which correlations between observables with separated support can accumulate as a consequence of the dynamics.
