Rainbow Nambu-Goldstone modes under a shear flow

We study an $O(N)$ scalar model under shear flow and its Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking $O(N) \to O(N-1)$. We find that the Nambu-Goldstone mode splits into an infinite number of gapless modes, which we call the rainbow Nambu-Goldstone modes. They have different group velocities and the fractional dispersion relation $ω\sim k_1^{2/3}$, where $k_1$ is the wavenumber along the flow. Such behaviors do not have counterparts in an equilibrium state.

Global 3-group symmetry and 't Hooft anomalies in axion electrodynamics

We investigate a higher-group structure of massless axion electrodynamics in $(3+1)$ dimensions. By using the background gauging method, we show that the higher-form symmetries necessarily have a global semistrict 3-group (2-crossed module) structure, and exhibit 't Hooft anomalies of the 3-group. In particular, we find a cubic mixed 't Hooft anomaly between 0-form and 1-form symmetries, which is specific to the higher-group structure.

Wigner functions and quantum kinetic theory of polarized photons

We derive the Wigner functions of polarized photons in the Coulomb gauge with the $\hbar$ expansion applied to quantum field theory, and identify side-jump effects for massless photons. We also discuss the photonic chiral vortical effect for the Chern-Simons current and zilch vortical effect for the zilch current in local thermal equilibrium as a consistency check for our formalism. The results are found to be in agreement with those obtained from different approaches. Moreover, using the real-time formalism, we construct the quantum kinetic theory (QKT) for polarized photons. By further adopting a specific power counting scheme for the distribution functions, we provide a more succinct form of an effective QKT. This photonic QKT involves quantum corrections associated with self-energy gradients in the collision term, which are analogous to the side-jump corrections pertinent to spin-orbit interactions in the chiral kinetic theory for massless fermions. The same theoretical framework can also be directly applied to weakly coupled gluons in the absence of background color fields.

Deconfining Phase Boundary of Rapidly Rotating Hot and Dense Matter and Analysis of Moment of Inertia

We discuss the effect of rapid rotation on the phase diagram of hadronic matter. The energy dispersion relation is shifted by an effective chemical potential induced by rotation. This suggests that rotation should lower the critical temperature of chiral restoration, but it is still controversial how the deconfinement temperature should change as a function of angular velocity. We adopt the hadron resonance gas model as an approach free from fitting parameters. We identify the deconfinement from the thermodynamic behavior and find that rotation decreases the deconfinement temperature. We also discuss the spatial inhomogeneity of the pressure and give a semi-quantitative estimate of the moment of inertia.

Classification of Magnetic Vortices by Angular Momentum Conservation

Superfluid vortices are quantum excitations carrying quantized amount of orbital angular momentum in a phase where global symmetry is spontaneously broken. We address a question of whether magnetic vortices in superconductors with dynamical gauge fields can carry nonzero orbital angular momentum or not. We discuss the angular momentum conservation in several distinct classes of examples from crossdisciplinary fields of physics across condensed matter, dense nuclear systems, and cosmology. The angular momentum carried by gauge field configurations around the magnetic vortex plays a crucial role in satisfying the principle of the conservation law. Based on various ways how the angular momentum conservation is realized, we provide a general scheme of classifying magnetic vortices in different phases of matter.

Effective models of a semi-quark gluon plasma

In the deconfined regime of a non-Abelian gauge theory at nonzero temperature, previously it was argued that if a (gauge invariant) source is added to generate nonzero holonomy, that this source must be linear for small holonomy. The simplest example of this is the second Bernoulli polynomial. However, then there is a conundrum in computing the free energy to $\sim g^3$ in the coupling constant $g$, as part of the free energy is discontinuous as the holonomy vanishes. In this paper we investigate two ways of generating the second Bernoulli polynomial dynamically: as a mass derivative of an auxiliary field, and from two dimensional ghosts embedded isotropically in four dimensions. Computing the holonomous hard thermal loop (HHTL) in the gluon self-energy, we find that the limit of small holonomy is only well behaved for two dimensional ghosts, with a free energy which to $\sim g^3$ is continuous as the holonomy vanishes.

Hard thermal loops, to quadratic order, in the background of a spatial 't Hooft loop

We compute the simplest hard thermal loops for a spatial 't Hooft loop in the deconfined phase of a SU(N) gauge theory. We expand to quadratic order about a constant background field A_0 = Q/g, where Q is a diagonal, color matrix and g is the gauge coupling constant. We analyze the problem in sufficient generality that the techniques developed can be applied to compute transport properties in a "semi"-Quark Gluon Plasma. Notably, computations are done using the double line notation at finite N. The quark self-energy is a Q-dependent thermal mass squared, of order g^2T^2, where T is the temperature, times the same hard thermal loop as at Q=0. The gluon self-energy involves two pieces: a Q-dependent Debye mass squared, of order g^2T^2, times the same hard thermal loop as for Q=0, plus a new hard thermal loop, of order g^2T^3, due to the color electric field generated by a spatial 't Hooft loop.

Higher-form symmetries and 3-group in axion electrodynamics

We study higher-form symmetries in a low-energy effective theory of a massless axion coupled with a photon in $(3+1)$ dimensions. It is shown that the higher-form symmetries of this system are accompanied by a semistrict 3-group (2-crossed module) structure, which can be found by the correlation functions of symmetry generators of the higher-form symmetries. We argue that the Witten effect and anomalous Hall effect in the axion electrodynamics can be described in terms of 3-group transformations.

Effective quantum kinetic theory for spin transport of fermions with collsional effects

We systematically derive the collision term for the axial kinetic theory, a quantum kinetic theory delineating the coupled dynamics of the vector/axial charges and spin transport carried by the massive spin-1/2 fermions traversing a medium. We employ the Wigner-function approach and propose a consistent power-counting scheme where the axial-charge distribution function, a non-conserved quantity for massive particles, is accounted as the first-order quantity in the $ \hbar $ expansion, while the vector-charge distribution function the zeroth-order quantity. This specific power-counting scheme allows us to organize a reduced $ \hbar$ expansion for the collision term and to formally identity the spin-diffusion effect and the spin-polarization effect at the same order. We confirm that the obtained collisional axial kinetic theory smoothly reduces to the chiral kinetic theory in the massless limit, serving as a consistency check. In the absence of electromagnetic fields, we further present the simplified axial kinetic equations suitable for tracking dynamical spin polarization of heavy and light fermions, respectively. As an application to the weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma at high temperature, we compute the spin-diffusion term for massive quarks within the leading-log approximation. The formal expression for the first-order terms provides a path toward evaluation of the spin polarization effect in quantum chromodynamics.

Counting Nambu-Goldstone modes of higher-form global symmetries

We discuss the counting of Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes associated with the spontaneous breaking of higher-form global symmetries. Effective field theories of NG modes are developed based on symmetry breaking patterns, using a generalized coset construction for higher-form symmetries. We derive a formula of the number of gapless NG modes, which involves expectation values of the commutators of conserved charges, possibly of different degrees.

Goldstino spectrum in an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture with explicitly broken supersymmetry

We theoretically investigate a supersymmetric collective mode called Goldstino in a Bose-Fermi mixture. The explicit supersymmetry breaking, which is unavoidable in cold atom experiments, is considered. We derive the Gell-Mann--Oakes-Renner (GOR) relation for the Goldstino, which gives the relation between the energy gap at the zero momentum and the explicit breaking term. We also numerically evaluate the gap of Goldstino above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature within the random phase approximation (RPA). While the gap obtained from the GOR relation coincides with that in the RPA for the mass-balanced system, there is a deviation from the GOR relation in the mass-imbalanced system. We point out the deviation becomes large when the Goldstino pole is close to the branch point, although it is parametrically a higher order with respect to the mass-imbalanced parameter. To examine the existence of the goldstino pole in realistic cold atomic systems, we show how the mass-imbalance effect appears in $^6$Li-$^7$Li, $^{40}$K-$^{41}$K, and $^{173}$Yb-$^{174}$Yb mixtures. Furthermore, we analyze the Goldstino spectral weight in a $^{173}$Yb-$^{174}$Yb mixture with realistic interactions and show a clear peak due to the Goldstino pole. As a possibility to observe the Goldstino spectrum in cold atom experiments, we discuss the effects of the Goldstino pole on the fermionic single-particle excitation as well as the relationship between the GOR relation and Tan's contact.

Resummation for the Field-theoretical Derivation of the Negative Magnetoresistance

We show detailed derivation of the electric conductivity of quark matter at finite temperature and density under a magnetic field. We especially focus on the longitudinal electric conductivity along the magnetic direction and establish the field-theoretical description of the negative magnetoresistance as observed in chiral materials. With increasing magnetic field our microscopic calculation leads to changing behavior from approximately quadratic to asymptotically linear dependence of the electric conductivity, while the magnetic dependence is quadratic in the conventional relaxation time approximation. The presented formulation founds a firm basis for the physical interpretation of the negative magnetoresistance as manifestation of the chiral anomaly, as well as it offers general methodology applicable for various transport coefficients.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and Nambu-Goldstone modes in open classical and quantum systems

We discuss spontaneous symmetry breaking of open classical and quantum systems. When a continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken in an open system, a gapless excitation mode appears corresponding to the Nambu-Goldstone mode. Unlike isolated systems, the gapless mode is not always a propagation mode, but it is a diffusion one. Using the Ward-Takahashi identity and the effective action formalism, we establish the Nambu-Goldstone theorem in open systems, and derive the low-energy coefficients that determine the dispersion relation of Nambu-Goldstone modes. Using these coefficients, we classify the Nambu-Goldstone modes into four types: type-A propagation, type-A diffusion, type-B propagation, and type-B diffusion modes.

Emergent discrete 3-form symmetry and domain walls

We show that axion models with the domain wall number $k$ in $(3+1)$ dimensions, i.e., periodic scalar field theories admitting $k$ axion domain walls, exhibit an emergent ${\mathbb Z}_k$ 3-form symmetry for $k >1$ in addition to a conventional ${\mathbb Z}_k$ 0-form symmetry. The emergent 3-form symmetry is explicitly shown by establishing a low-energy dual transformation between the scalar field theory and a 3-form gauge theory. We further argue that the emergent 3-form symmetry is spontaneously broken, and the breaking pattern is so-called the type-B spontaneous symmetry breaking. We discuss similar and different points between the phase admitting the domain walls and topologically ordered phases.

Topological order in a color-flavor locked phase of $(3+1)$-dimensional $U(N)$ gauge-Higgs system

We study a $(3+1)$-dimensional $U(N)$ gauge theory with $N$-flavor fundamental scalar fields, whose color-flavor locked (CFL) phase has topologically stable non-Abelian vortices. The $U(1)$ charge of the scalar fields must be $Nk+1$ for some integer $k$ in order for them to be in the representation of $U(N)$ gauge group. This theory has a $\mathbb{Z}_{Nk+1}$ one-form symmetry, and it is spontaneously broken in the CFL phase, i.e., the CFL phase is topologically ordered if $k\not=0$. We also find that the world sheet of topologically stable vortices in CFL phase can generate this one-form symmetry.

Axial Kinetic Theory and Spin Transport for Fermions with Arbitrary Mass

We derive the quantum kinetic theory for fermions with arbitrary mass in a background electromagnetic field from the Wigner-function approach. Since spin of massive fermions is a dynamical degree of freedom, the kinetic equations with the leading-order quantum corrections describe entangled dynamics of not only the vector- and axial-charge distributions but also of the spin polarization. Therefore, we obtain one scalar and one axial-vector kinetic equations with magnetization currents pertinent to the spin-orbit interaction. We show that our results smoothly reduce to the massless limit where the spin of massless fermions is no longer an independent dynamical degree of freedom but is enslaved by the chirality and momentum and the accordingly kinetic equations turn into the chiral kinetic theory for Weyl fermions. We provide a kinetic theory covering both the massive and massless cases, and hence resolves the problem in constructing the bridge between them. Such generalization may be crucial for applications to various physical systems. Based on our kinetic equations, we discuss the anomalous currents transported by massive fermions in thermal equilibrium.

Image-processing the topological charge density in the CP(N-1) model

We study the topological charge density distribution using the two-dimensional $CP^{N-1}$ model. We numerically compute not only the topological susceptibility, which is a spatially global quantity to probe topological properties of the whole system, but also the topological charge correlator with finite momentum. We perform Fourier power spectrum analysis for the topological charge density for various values of the inverse temperature $β$. We propose to utilize the Fourier entropy as a convenient measure to characterize spatial distribution patterns and demonstrate that the Fourier entropy exhibits nontrivial temperature dependence. We also consider the snapshot entropy defined with the singular value decomposition, which also turns out to behave nonmonotonically with the temperature. We give a possible interpretation suggested from the strong-coupling analysis.

Anomaly-induced transport phenomena from the imaginary-time formalism

A derivation of the anomaly-induced transport phenomena---the chiral magnetic/vortical effect---is revisited based on the imaginary-time formalism of quantum field theory. Considering the simplest anomalous system composed of a single Weyl fermion, we provide two derivations: perturbative (one-loop) evaluation of the anomalous transport coefficient, and the anomaly matching for the local thermodynamic functional.
