Analytic smoothing effect for the nonlinear Landau equation of Maxwellian molecules

We consider the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Landau equation of Maxwellian molecules, under the perturbation frame work to global equilibrium. We show that if $H^r_x(L^2_v), r >3/2$ norm of the initial perturbation is small enough, then the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Landau equation admits a unique global solution which becomes analytic with respect to both position $x$ and velocity $v$ variables for any time $t>0$. This is the first result of analytic smoothing effect for the spatially inhomogeneous nonlinear kinetic equation. The method used here is microlocal analysis and energy estimates. The key point is adopting a time integral weight associated with the kinetic transport operator.

Non-Cutoff Boltzmann Equation with Polynomial Decay Perturbation

The Boltzmann equation without an angular cutoff is considered when the initial data is a small perturbation of a global Maxwellian with an algebraic decay in the velocity variable. A well-posedness theory in the perturbative framework is obtained for both mild and strong angular singularities by combining three ingredients: the moment propagation, the spectral gap of the linearized operator, and the regularizing effect of the linearized operator when the initial data is in a Sobolev space with a negative index. A carefully designed pseudo-differential operator plays an central role in capturing the regularizing effect. Moreover, some intrinsic symmetry with respect to the collision operator and an intrinsic functional in the coercivity estimate are essentially used in the commutator estimates for the collision operator with velocity weights.

Convergence to the Self-similar Solutions to the Homogeneous Boltzmann Equation

The Boltzmann H-theorem implies that the solution to the Boltzmann equation tends to an equilibrium, that is, a Maxwellian when time tends to infinity. This has been proved in varies settings when the initial energy is finite. However, when the initial energy is infinite, the time asymptotic state is no longer described by a Maxwellian, but a self-similar solution obtained by Bobylev-Cercignani. The purpose of this paper is to rigorously justify this for the spatially homogeneous problem with Maxwellian molecule type cross section without angular cutoff.

Measure valued solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff

A uniform approach is introduced to study the existence of measure valued solutions to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for both hard potential with finite energy, and soft potential with finite or infinite energy, by using Toscani metric. Under the non-angular cutoff assumption on the cross-section, the solutions obtained are shown to be in the Schwartz space in the velocity variable as long as the initial data is not a single Dirac mass without any extra moment condition for hard potential, and with the boundedness on moments of any order for soft potential.

Global solutions in the critical Besov space for the non cutoff Boltzmann equation

The Boltzmann equation is studied without the cutoff assumption. Under a perturbative setting, a unique global solution of the Cauchy problem of the equation is established in a critical Chemin-Lerner space. In order to analyse the collisional term of the equation, a Chemin-Lerner norm is combined with a non-isotropic norm with respect to a velocity variable, which yields an apriori estimate for an energy estimate. Together with local existence following from commutator estimates and the Hahn-Banach extension theorem, the desired solution is obtained. Also, the non-negativity of the solution is rigorously shown.

A characterization of probability measure with finite moment and an application to the Boltzmann equation

We characterize probability measure with finite moment of any order in terms of the symmetric difference operators of their Fourier transforms. By using our new characterization, we prove the continuity $f(t,v)\in C((0, \infty),L^1_{2k-2 +α})$, where $f(t, v)$ stands for the density of unique measure-valued solution $(F_t)_{t\ge0}$ of the Cauchy problem for the homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation, with Maxwellian molecules, corresponding to a probability measure initial datum $F_0$ satisfying \[ \int |v|^{2k-2+α} dF_0(v) < \infty, 0\leq α< 2,k= 2, 3, 4,\cdots \] provided that $F_0$ is not a single Dirac mass.

A new characterization and global regularity of infinite energy solutions to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new characterization of the characteristic functions for the study on the measure valued solution to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation so that it precisely captures the moment constraint in physics. This significantly improves the previous result by Cannone-Karch [CPAM 63(2010), 747-778] in the sense that the new characterization gives a complete description of infinite energy solutions for the Maxwellian cross section. In addition, the global in time smoothing effect of the infinite energy solution except for a single Dirac mass initial datum is justified as for the finite energy solution.

Villani conjecture on smoothing effect of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with measure initial datum

We justify the Villani conjecture on the smoothing effect for measure value solutions to the space homogeneous Boltzmann equation of Maxwellian type cross sections. This is the first rigorous proof of the smoothing effect for any measure value initial data except the single Dirac mass, which gives the optimal description on the regularity of solutions for positive time, caused by the singularity in the cross section. The main new ingredient in the proof is the introduction of a time degenerate coercivity estimate by using the microlocal analysis.

Phase space analysis and functional calculus for the linearized Landau and Boltzmann operators

In many works, the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator is considered to behave essentially as a fractional Laplacian. In the present work, we prove that the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator with Maxwellian molecules is exactly equal to a fractional power of the linearized Landau operator which is the sum of the harmonic oscillator and the spherical Laplacian. This result allows to display explicit sharp coercive estimates satisfied by the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann operator for both Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian molecules.

Spectral and phase space analysis of the linearized non-cutoff Kac collision operator

The non-cutoff Kac operator is a kinetic model for the non-cutoff radially symmetric Boltzmann operator. For Maxwellian molecules, the linearization of the non-cutoff Kac operator around a Maxwellian distribution is shown to be a function of the harmonic oscillator, to be diagonal in the Hermite basis and to be essentially a fractional power of the harmonic oscillator. This linearized operator is a pseudodifferential operator, and we provide a complete asymptotic expansion for its symbol in a class enjoying a nice symbolic calculus. Related results for the linearized non-cutoff radially symmetric Boltzmann operator are also proven.

The Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff in the whole space: III, Qualitative properties of solutions

This is a continuation of our series of works for the inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation. We study qualitative properties of classical solutions, precisely, the full regularization in all variables, uniqueness, non-negativity and convergence rate to the equilibrium. Together with the results of Parts I and II about the well posedness of the Cauchy problem around Maxwellian, we conclude this series with a satisfactory mathematical theory for Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff.

Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff in the whole space: I, Global existence for soft potential

It is known that the singularity in the non-cutoff cross-section of the Boltzmann equation leads to the gain of regularity and gain of weight in the velocity variable. By defining and analyzing a non-isotropy norm which precisely captures the dissipation in the linearized collision operator, we first give a new and precise coercivity estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for general physical cross sections. Then the Cauchy problem for the Boltzmann equation is considered in the framework of small perturbation of an equilibrium state. In this part, for the soft potential case in the sense that there is no positive power gain of weight in the coercivity estimate on the linearized operator, we derive some new functional estimates on the nonlinear collision operator. Together with the coercivity estimates, we prove the global existence of classical solutions for the Boltzmann equation in weighted Sobolev spaces.
