First-Principles Dynamical Coherent-Potential Approximation Approach to the Ferromagnetism of Fe, Co, and Ni

Magnetic properties of Fe, Co, and Ni at finite temperatures have been investigated on the basis of the first-principles dynamical CPA (Coherent Potential Approximation) combined with the LDA (Local Density Approximation) + $U$ Hamiltonian in the Tight-Binding Linear Muffintin Orbital (TB-LMTO) representation. The Hamiltonian includes the transverse spin fluctuation terms. Numerical calculations have been performed within the harmonic approximation with 4th-order dynamical corrections. Calculated single-particle densities of states in the ferromagnetic state indicate that the dynamical effects reduce the exchange splitting, suppress the band width of the quasi-particle state, and causes incoherent excitations corresponding the 6 eV satellites. Results of the magnetization vs temperature curves, paramagnetic spin susceptibilities, and the amplitudes of local moments are presented. Calculated Curie temperatures ($T_{\rm C}$) are reported to be 1930K for Fe, 2550K for Co, and 620K for Ni; $T_{\rm C}$ for Fe and Co are overestimated by a factor of 1.8, while $T_{\rm C}$ in Ni agrees with the experimental result. Effective Bohr magneton numbers calculated from the inverse susceptibilities are 3.0 $μ_{\rm B}$ (Fe), 3.0 $μ_{\rm B}$ (Co), and 1.6 $μ_{\rm B}$ (Ni), being in agreement with the experimental ones. Overestimate of $T_{\rm C}$ in Fe and Co is attributed to the neglects of the higher-order dynamical effects as well as the magnetic short range order.

Full Self-Consistent Projection Operator Approach to Nonlocal Excitations in Solids

A self-consistent projection operator method for single-particle excitations is developed. It describes the nonlocal correlations on the basis of a projection technique to the retarded Green function and the off-diagonal effective medium. The theory takes into account long-range intersite correlations making use of an incremental cluster expansion in the medium. A generalized self-consistent coherent potential is derived. It yields the momentum-dependent excitation spectra with high resolution. Numerical studies for the Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice at half filling show that the theory is applicable in a wide range of Coulomb interaction strength. In particular, it is found that the long-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the strong interaction regime cause shadow bands in the low-energy region and sub-peaks of the Mott-Hubbard bands.

Nonlocal Excitation Spectra in 2D Doped Hubbard Model

Single-particle excitation spectra of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on the square lattice near half filling and at zero temperature are investigated on the basis of the self-consistent projection operator method. The method guarantees a high accuracy of the spectra with high energy and high momentum resolutions. It takes into account long-range intersite correlations as well as the strong on-site correlations. Effects of nonlocal excitations are clarified by comparing the results with those of the single-site approximation. The calculated spectra verify the quantum Monte-Carlo results for finite temperatures. The spectra at the Fermi level yield a hole-like Fermi surface in the underdoped region and an electron-like Fermi surface in the overdoped region. From a numerical analysis of the momentum dependent effective mass and self-energy, it is concluded that a marginal Fermi-liquid like state persists even at finite doping concentrations in the strongly correlated region because a van Hove singularity is pinned to the Fermi surface. It is also found that a kink structure appears in the quasiparticle energy band in the same region. The kink is shown to be caused by a mixing between the quasiparticle band and an excitation band with strong short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. These results suggest an explanation for some of the unusual properties of the normal state in high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates.

Phenomenological Theory of Multiple Spin Density Waves in fcc Transition Metals

The relative stability among the multiple spin density wave (MSDW) states in fcc transition metals has been investigated on the basis of a Ginzburg-Landau type of free energy with terms up to the fourth order in magnetic moments. Obtained magnetic phase diagrams in the space of expansion coefficients indicate the possibility of various 3Q MSDW states in fcc transition metals: the commensurate 3Q state, the incommensurate linear 3Q state, and the incommensurate helical 3Q state. It is shown that these 3Q states are always stabilized, when they are compared with the corresponding 2Q and 1Q states, and their magnetic moment amplitudes are the largest among those of the three states. The results are compared with previous results of the ground-state calculations, and possible scenarios to explain the experimental data of fcc-Fe are proposed.

Kink Structure in the Quasiparticle Band of Doped Hubbard Systems

By making use of the self-consistent projection operator method with high-momentum and high-energy resolutions, we find a kink structure in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum of the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the underdoped regime. The kink is caused by a mixing between the quasiparticle state and excitations with short-range antiferromagnetic order. We suggest that this might be the origin of the strong concentration dependence of the 'kink' found in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.03-0.07).
