Unconditional quantum-noise suppression via measurement-based quantum feedback

We demonstrate unconditional quantum-noise suppression in a collective spin system via feedback control based on quantum non-demolition measurement (QNDM). We perform shot-noise limited collective spin measurements on an ensemble of $3.7\times 10^5$ laser-cooled 171Yb atoms in their spin-1/2 ground states. Correlation between two sequential QNDMs indicates $-0.80^{+0.11}_{-0.12}\,\mathrm{dB}$ quantum noise suppression in a conditional manner. Our feedback control successfully converts the conditional quantum-noise suppression into the unconditional one without significant loss of the noise

Observation of a p-wave Optical Feshbach Resonance

We demonstrate a p$-wave optical Feshbach resonance (OFR) using purely long-range molecular states of a fermionic isotope of ytterbium ^{171}Yb, following the proposition made by K. Goyal et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 062704 (2010)]. The p-wave OFR is clearly observed as a modification of a photoassociation rate for atomic ensembles at about 5 micro-Kelvins. A scattering phase shift variation of δη=0.022 rad is observed with an atom loss rate coefficient K=28.0*10^{-12} cm^3/s.

Resonant Control of Interaction Between Different Electronic States

We observe a magnetic Feshbach resonance in a collision between the ground and metastable states of two-electron atoms of ytterbium (Yb). We measure the on-site interaction of doubly-occupied sites of an atomic Mott insulator state in a three-dimensional optical lattice as a collisional frequency shift in a high-resolution laser spectroscopy. The observed spectra are well fitted by a simple theoretical formula, in which two particles with an s-wave contact interaction are confined in a harmonic trap. This analysis reveals a wide variation of the interaction with a resonance behavior around a magnetic field of about 1.1 Gauss for the energetically lowest magnetic sublevel of ${}^{170}$Yb, as well as around 360 mG for the energetically highest magnetic sublevel of ${}^{174}$Yb. The observed Feshbach resonance can only be induced by an anisotropic inter-atomic interaction. This novel scheme will open the door to a variety of study using two-electron atoms with tunable interaction.

An SU(N) Mott insulator of an atomic Fermi gas realized by large-spin Pomeranchuk cooling

The Hubbard model, containing only the minimum ingredients of nearest neighbor hopping and on-site interaction for correlated electrons, has succeeded in accounting for diverse phenomena observed in solid-state materials. One of the interesting extensions is to enlarge its spin symmetry to SU(N>2), which is closely related to systems with orbital degeneracy. Here we report a successful formation of the SU(6) symmetric Mott insulator state with an atomic Fermi gas of ytterbium (173Yb) in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Besides the suppression of compressibility and the existence of charge excitation gap which characterize a Mott insulating phase, we reveal an important difference between the cases of SU(6) and SU(2) in the achievable temperature as the consequence of different entropy carried by an isolated spin. This is analogous to Pomeranchuk cooling in solid 3He and will be helpful for investigating exotic quantum phases of SU(N) Hubbard system at extremely low temperatures.

Spin Dependent Collision of Ultracold Metastable Atoms

Spin-polarized metastable atoms of ultracold ytterbium are trapped at high density and their inelastic collisional properties are measured. We reveal that in collisions of Yb(3P2) with Yb(1S0) there is relatively weak inelastic loss, but with a significant spin-dependence consistent with Zeeman sublevel changes as being the dominant decay process. This is in strong contrast to our observations of Yb(3P2)-Yb(3P2) collisional loss, which are, at low field, much more rapid and have essentially no spin dependence. Our results give a guideline to use the 3P2 states in many possible applications.

Controlled Production of Sub-Radiant States of a Diatomic Molecule in an Optical Lattice

We report successful production of sub-radiant states of a two-atom system in a three-dimensional optical lattice starting from doubly occupied sites in a Mott insulator phase of a quantum gas of atomic ytterbium. We can selectively produce either sub-radiant 1g state or super-radiant 0u state by choosing the excitation laser frequency. The inherent weak excitation rate for the sub-radiant 1g state is overcome by the increased atomic density due to the tight-confinement in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Our experimental measurements of binding energies, linewidth, and Zeeman shift confirm observation of sub-radiant levels of the 1g state of the Yb_2 molecule.

Bose-Einstein condensate in gases of rare atomic species

We report on the successful extension of production of Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) to rare species. Despite its low natural abundance of 0.13%, $^{168}$Yb is directly evaporatively cooled down to BEC. Our successful demonstration encourages attempts to obtain quantum gases of radioactive atoms, which extends the possibility of quantum many-body physics and precision measurement. Moreover, a stable binary mixture of $^{168}$Yb BEC and $^{174}$Yb BEC is successfully formed.

Quantum degenerate mixtures of alkali and alkaline-earth-like atoms

We realize simultaneous quantum degeneracy in mixtures consisting of the alkali and alkalineearth-like atoms Li and Yb. This is accomplished within an optical trap by sympathetic cooling of the fermionic isotope 6Li with evaporatively cooled bosonic 174Yb and, separately, fermionic 173Yb.Using cross-thermalization studies, we also measure the elastic s-wave scattering lengths of both Li-Yb combinations, |a6Li-174Yb| = 1.0\pm0.2 nm and |a6Li-173Yb| = 0.9\pm0.2 nm. The equality of these lengths is found to be consistent with mass-scaling analysis. The quantum degenerate mixtures of Li and Yb, as realized here, can be the basis for creation of ultracold molecules with electron spin degrees of freedom, studies of novel Efimov trimers, and impurity probes of superfluid systems.

Interaction and filling induced quantum phases of dual Mott insulators of bosons and fermions

Many-body effects are at the very heart of diverse phenomena found in condensed-matter physics. One striking example is the Mott insulator phase where conductivity is suppressed as a result of a strong repulsive interaction. Advances in cold atom physics have led to the realization of the Mott insulating phases of atoms in an optical lattice, mimicking the corresponding condensed matter systems. Here, we explore an exotic strongly-correlated system of Interacting Dual Mott Insulators of bosons and fermions. We reveal that an inter-species interaction between bosons and fermions drastically modifies each Mott insulator, causing effects that include melting, generation of composite particles, an anti-correlated phase, and complete phase-separation. Comparisons between the experimental results and numerical simulations indicate intrinsic adiabatic heating and cooling for the attractively and repulsively interacting dual Mott Insulators, respectively.

Non-Abelian Topological Orders and Majorana Fermions in Spin-Singlet Superconductors

The non-Abelian topological order for superconductors is characterized by the existence of zero-energy Majorana fermions in edges of systems and in a vortex of a macroscopic condensate, which obey the non-Abelian statistics. This paper is devoted to an extensive study on the non-Abelian topological phase of spin-singlet superconductors with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction proposed in our previous letter [M. Sato, Y. Takahashi, and S. Fujimoto, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 020401 (2009)]. We mainly consider the s-wave pairing state and the d+id pairing state. In the case of d+id-wave pairing, Majorana fermions appear in almost all parameter regions of the mixed state under an applied magnetic field, provided that the Fermi level crosses k-points in the vicinity of the Gamma point or the M point in the Brillouin zone, while in the case of s-wave pairing, a strong magnetic field, the Zeeman energy of which is larger than the superconducting gap is required to realize the topological phase. We clarify that Majorana fermions in Rashba spin-singlet superconductors are much more stable than those realized in spin-triplet p+ip superconductors in certain parameter regions. We also investigate the topological number which ensures the topological stability of the phase in detail. Furthermore, as a byproduct, we found that topological order is also realized in conventional spin (or charge) density wave states with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, for which massless Dirac fermions appear in the edge of the systems and charge fractionalization occurs.

Realization of SU(2)*SU(6) Fermi System

We report the realization of a novel degenerate Fermi mixture with an SU(2)*SU(6) symmetry in a cold atomic gas. We successfully cool the mixture of the two fermionic isotopes of ytterbium 171Yb with the nuclear spin I=1/2 and 173Yb with I=5/2 below the Fermi temperature T_ F as 0.46T_F for 171Yb and 0.54T_F for 173Yb. The same scattering lengths for different spin components make this mixture featured with the novel SU(2)*SU(6) symmetry. The nuclear spin components are separately imaged by exploiting an optical Stern-Gerlach effect. In addition, the mixture is loaded into a 3D optical lattice to implement the SU(2)*SU(6) Hubbard model. This mixture will open the door to the study of novel quantum phases such as a spinor Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like fermionic superfluid.

Nanometer-scale spatial modulation of an inter-atomic interaction in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We demonstrate nanometer-scale spatial control of inter-atomic interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate of ytterbium(Yb). A pulsed optical standing wave, tuned near an optical Feshbach resonance varies the s-wave scattering length continuously across the standing wave pattern. The modulated mean-field energy with a spatial period of every 278 nm is monitored by a diffraction pattern in a time-of-flight image. We observe a wide scattering length control of up to 160 nm. The demonstrated spatial modulation of the scattering length proves that the high resolution control of atomic interactions is possible.

Manipulation of Non-classical Atomic Spin States

We report successful manipulation of non-classical atomic spin states. We generate squeezed spin states by a spin quantum nondemolition measurement, and apply an off-resonant circularly-polarized light pulse to the atoms. By changing the pulse duration, we have clearly observed a rotation of anisotropic quantum noise distribution in good contrast with the case of manipulation of a coherent spin state where the quantum noise distribution is always isotropic. This is an important step for quantum state tomography, quantum swapping, and precision spectroscopic measurement.

Non-Abelian Topological Order in S-Wave Superfluids of Ultracold Fermionic Atoms

We show that in s-wave superfluids of cold fermionic atoms with laser-field-generated effective spin-orbit interactions, a topological phase with gapless edge states and Majorana fermion quasiparticles obeying the non-Abelian statistics is realized in the case with a large Zeeman magnetic field. Our scenario provides a promising approach for quantum computation manipulating non-Abelian anyons via an s-wave Feshbach resonance.

Measurement schemes for the spin quadratures on an ensemble of atoms

We consider how to measure collective spin states of an atomic ensemble based on the recent multi-pass approaches for quantum interface between light and atoms. We find that a scheme with two passages of a light pulse through the atomic ensemble is efficient to implement the homodyne tomography of the spin state. Thereby, we propose to utilize optical pulses as a phase-shifter that rotates the quadrature of the spins. This method substantially simplifies the geometry of experimental schemes.

A Mott Insulator of Ultracold Alkaline-Earth-Like Atoms

The transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator (MI) phase has been observed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ytterbium (Yb) atoms in an optical lattice. An all-optically produced BEC of 174Yb atoms was loaded into three-dimensional optical lattices produced by a 532 nm laser beam. The interference pattern was measured after releasing the quantum gas from the trapping potential. As increasing the optical lattice depth, we observed the disappearance of the interference patterns, which is a signature of entering the MI regime. This result is an important step into studies by using a combination of the MI state and the ultranarrow optical transition of ultracold alkaline-earth-like atoms.

All-Optical Formation of Quantum Degenerate Mixtures

We report the realization of quantum degenerate mixed gases of ytterbium (Yb) isotopes using all-optical methods. We have succeeded in cooling attractively interacting 176Yb atoms via sympathetic cooling down to below the Bose-Einstein transition temperature, coexisting with a stable condensate of 174Yb atoms with a repulsive interaction. We have observed a rapid atom loss in 176Yb atoms after cooling down below the transition temperature, which indicates the collapse of a 176Yb condensate. The sympathetic cooling technique has been applied to cool a 173Yb-174Yb Fermi-Bose mixture to the quantum degenerate regime.

Fictitious Magnetic Resonance by Quasi-Electrostatic Field

We propose a new kind of spin manipulation method using a {\it fictitious} magnetic field generated by a quasi-electrostatic field. The method can be applicable to every atom with electron spins and has distinct advantages of small photon scattering rate and local addressability. By using a $\rm{CO_2}$ laser as a quasi-electrostatic field, we have experimentally demonstrated the proposed method by observing the Rabi-oscillation of the ground state hyperfine spin F=1 of the cold $\rm{^{87}Rb}$ atoms and the Bose-Einstein condensate.
