Proton Spin Structure at Small-$x$

We generalize the Bartels-Ermolaev-Ryskin approach for the $g_1$ structure function at small-$x$ to determine the small-$x$ asymptotic behavior of the orbital angular momentum distributions in QCD. We present an exact analytical solution of the evolution equation in the double logarithmic approximation and discuss its implications for the proton spin problem.

Computing the gluon Sivers function at small-$x$

We compute the gluon Sivers function $f_{1T}^{\perp g}(x,k_\perp)$ of the transversely polarized nucleon at small-$x$ by exploiting the known connection between the dipole gluon Sivers function and the Odderon. We numerically solve the evolution equation for the Odderon both in the linear and nonlinear regimes. While we find that the $x$ and $k_\perp$ dependences of the Sivers function do not factorize as a result of the quantum evolution, factorization breaking is not numerically significant, and is much milder than what one expects in the case of unpolarized TMDs. We also point out the possibility that, due to the presence of a node in the Sivers function, single spin asymmetry for open charm production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering flips signs as the transverse momentum of D-mesons is varied. This can be tested at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Single spin asymmetries in ultra-peripheral $p^\uparrow A$ collisions

We suggest inclusive hadron production in ultra-peripheral proton-nucleus collisions (UPCs) $p^\uparrow A \to h AX$ as a new channel to investigate single spin asymmetries (SSAs), in particular, to test the assumed dominance of the contribution from twist-three fragmentation functions. The UPC cross sections are obtained by considering the photoproduction limit of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). In particular, we find simple formulas for the polarized UPC cross sections in the collinear twist-three framework. We then numerically calculate the fragmentation contribution to SSA in $p^\uparrow A \to πA X$ at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and find a few percent asymmetry in the forward region.

Quark and gluon contributions to the QCD trace anomaly

We show that, in dimensional reguralization in the minimal subtraction scheme, the QCD trace anomaly can be unambiguously decomposed into two parts coming from the renormalized quark and gluon energy momentum tensors. We carry out this decomposition at the two-loop level. The result can be used to constrain the renormalization group properties of the nucleon's twist-four gravitational form factor $\bar{C}_{q,g}$.

Holographic $J/ψ$ production near threshold and the proton mass problem

It has been suggested that the production of a heavy quarkonium near threshold in electron-proton scattering can shed light on the origin of the proton mass via the QCD trace anomaly. We study the photoproduction of $J/ψ$ off the proton using gauge/string duality and demonstrate that the $t$-dependence of the differential cross section $dσ/dt$ at small-$t$ is a sensitive probe of the trace anomaly.

Probing the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon Wigner distribution in pp collisions

We show that the diffractive forward production of two quarkonia, especially the $χ_{cJ}$ and $η_c$ states, in proton-proton or proton-ion collisions can access the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon Wigner distribution of the proton. We use the hybrid factorization approach where the collinear, double gluon PDF is applied for one of the protons and the $k_T$-dependent (Wigner or GTMD) distribution for the other. The production of quarkonia is treated in the NRQCD framework. A particularly concise formula is obtained for double $χ_{J=1}$ production.

On the small-$x$ behavior of the orbital angular momentum distributions in QCD

We present the numerical solution of the leading order QCD evolution equation for the orbital angular momentum distributions of quarks and gluons and discuss its implications for the nucleon spin sum rule. We observe that at small-$x$, the gluon helicity and orbital angular momentum distributions are roughly of the same magnitude but with opposite signs, indicating a significant cancellation between them. A similar cancellation occurs also in the quark sector. We explain analytically the reason for this cancellation.

Classical and quantum entropy of parton distributions

We introduce the semiclassical Wehrl entropy for the nucleon as a measure of complexity of the multiparton configuration in phase space. This gives a new perspective on the nucleon tomography. We evaluate the entropy in the small-$x$ region and compare with the quantum von Neumann entropy. We also discuss the growth of entropy at small-$x$ and argue that it eventually saturates due to the Pomeron loop effect.

Accessing the gluon Wigner distribution in ultraperipheral $pA$ collisions

We propose to constrain the gluon Wigner distribution in the nucleon by studying the exclusive diffractive dijet production process in ultraperipheral proton-nucleus collisions (UPCs) at RHIC and the LHC. Compared to the previous proposal in Ref. [Y. Hatta, B. W. Xiao, and F. Yuan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 202301 (2016).] to study the same observable in lepton-nucleon scattering, the use of UPCs has a few advantages: not only is the cross section larger, but the extraction of the Wigner distribution from the data also becomes simpler, including its elliptic angular dependence. We compute the corresponding cross section and evaluate the coefficients using models which include the gluon saturation effects. A potential for the measurements of the Wigner distribution at current and future experimental facilities is also discussed.

Thermalization of overpopulated systems in the 2PI formalism

Based on the two-particle irreducible (2PI) formalism to next-to-leading order in the $1/N$ expansion, we study the thermalization of overpopulated systems in scalar $O(N)$ theories with moderate coupling. We focus in particular on the growth of soft modes, and examine whether this can lead to the formation of a transient Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) when the initial occupancy is high enough. For the value of the coupling constant used in our simulations, we find that while the system rapidly approaches the condensation threshold, the formation of a BEC is eventually hindered by particle number changing processes.

Elliptic Flow in Small Systems due to Elliptic Gluon Distributions?

We investigate the contributions from the so-called elliptic gluon Wigner distributions to the rapidity and azimuthal correlations of particles produced in high energy $pA$ collisions by applying the double parton scattering mechanism. We compute the `elliptic flow' parameter $v_2$ as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity, and find qualitative agreement with experimental observations. This shall encourage further developments with more rigorous studies of the elliptic gluon distributions and their applications in hard scattering processes in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions.

Gluon orbital angular momentum at small-$x$

We present a general analysis of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) distribution of gluons $L_g(x)$ inside the nucleon with particular emphasis on the small-$x$ region. We derive a novel operator representation of $L_g(x)$ in terms of Wilson lines and argue that it is approximately proportional to the gluon helicity distribution $L_g(x) \approx -2ΔG(x)$ at small-$x$. We also compute longitudinal single spin asymmetry in exclusive diffractive dijet production in lepton-nucleon scattering in the next-to-eikonal approximation and show that the asymmetry is a direct probe of the gluon helicity/OAM distribution as well as the QCD odderon exchange.

Gluon Tomography from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering at Small-x

We present a full evaluation of the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) cross section in the dipole framework in the small-x region. The result features the $\cos ϕ$ and $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal angular correlations which have been missing in previous studies based on the dipole model. In particular, the $\cos 2ϕ$ term is generated by the elliptic gluon Wigner distribution whose measurement at the planned electron-ion collider (EIC) provides an important information about the gluon tomography at small-x. We also show the consistency with the standard collinear factorization approach based on the quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs).

Single spin asymmetry in forward $pA$ collisions II: Fragmentation contribution

We compute the twist-three fragmentation contribution to the transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) in light hadron production $p^\uparrow p\to hX$ and $p^\uparrow A\to hX$ including the gluon saturation effect in the unpolarized nucleon/nucleus. Together with the results in our previous paper, this completes the full evaluation of the SSA in this process in the "hybrid" formalism. We argue that the dependence of SSAs on the atomic mass number in the forward region can elucidate the relative importance of the soft gluon pole contribution from the twist-three quark-gluon-quark correlation in the polarized nucleon and the twist-three fragmentation contribution from the final state hadron.

Wigner, Husimi and GTMD distributions in the Color Glass Condensate

We study the phase space distributions of gluons inside a nucleon/nucleus in the small-$x$ regime including the gluon saturation effect. This can be done by using the relation between the gluon Wigner distribution and the dipole S-matrix at small-$x$, the latter satisfies the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. By efficiently solving the BK equation with impact parameter dependence, we compute the Wigner, Husimi and generalized TMD (GTMD) distributions in the saturation regime. We also investigate the elliptic angular dependence of these distributions which has been recently shown to be measurable in DIS experiments.

Single Spin Asymmetry in Forward $pA$ Collisions

We compute the transverse single spin asymmetry in light hadron production $p^\uparrow p\to hX$ and $p^\uparrow A\to hX$ including the gluon saturation effect in the unpolarized nucleon/nucleus. In the forward (large-$x_F$) region, the dominant contribution comes from the so-called derivative term associated with the soft gluonic pole. This leads to the cancellation of nuclear effects in $A_N$ which can be tested at RHIC. We also show that the soft fermionic pole disappears in the saturation environment.

Collinearly improved JIMWLK evolution in Langevin form

The high-energy evolution of Wilson line operators, which at leading order is described by the Balitsky-JIMWLK equations, receives large radiative corrections enhanced by single and double collinear logarithms at next-to-leading order and beyond. We propose a method for resumming such logarithmic corrections to all orders, at the level of the Langevin formulation of the JIMWLK equation. The ensuing, collinearly-improved Langevin equation features generalized Wilson line operators, which depend not only upon rapidity (the logarithm of the longitudinal momentum), but also upon the transverse size of the color neutral projectile to which the Wilson lines belong. This additional scale dependence is built up during the evolution, via the condition that the successive emissions of soft gluons be ordered in time. The presence of this transverse scale in the Langevin equation furthermore allows for the resummation of the one-loop running coupling corrections.

Hemisphere jet mass distribution at finite $N_c$

We perform the leading logarithmic resummation of nonglobal logarithms for the single-hemisphere jet mass distribution in $e^+e^-$ annihilation including the finite-$N_c$ corrections. The result is compared with the previous all-order result in the large-$N_c$ limit as well as fixed-order perturbative calculations.
