Index and winding numbers on $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifolds with magnetic flux

We analyze the number of independent chiral zero modes and the winding numbers at the fixed points on $T^2/{\mathbb{Z}}_N$ ($N=2,3,4,6$) orbifolds with magnetic flux. In the case of $N=2$, we derive the index formula $n_{+}-n_{-}=M/2+(-V_{+}+V_{-})/4=M/2-V_{+}/2+1$ by using the trace formula, where $n_{\pm}$ are the numbers of the $\pm$ chiral zero modes and $V_{\pm}$ are the sums of the winding numbers at the fixed points on $T^2/{\mathbb{Z}}_2$. We also obtain the formula $n_{+}-n_{-}=M/N+(-V_{+}+V_{-})/(2N)=M/N-V_{+}/N+1$ for $N=3,4,6$ under an assumption.

Zero-mode wave functions by localized gauge fluxes

We study chiral zero-mode wave functions on blow-up manifolds of $T^2/Z_N$ orbifolds with both bulk and localized magnetic flux backgrounds. We introduce a singular gauge transformation in order to remove $Z_N$ phases for $Z_N$ twisted boundary condition of matter fields. We compute wave functions of not only bulk zero modes but also localized modes at the orbifold singular points, which correspond to new zero modes induced by localized flux. By studying their Yukawa couplings, it turns out that only three patterns of Yukawa couplings are allowed. Our theory has a specific coupling selection rule.

Index theorem on magnetized blow-up manifold of $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$

We investigate blow-up manifolds of $T^2/{\mathbb{Z}}_N\,(N=2,3,4,6)$ orbifolds with magnetic flux $M$. Since the blow-up manifolds have no singularities, we can apply the Atiyah-Singer index theorem to them. Then, we establish the zero-mode counting formula $n_{+}-n_{-}=(M-V_{+})/N+1$, where $V_{+}$ denotes the sum of winding numbers at fixed points on the $T^2/{\mathbb{Z}}_N$ orbifolds, as the Atiyah-Singer index theorem on the orbifolds, and clarify physical and geometrical meanings of the formula.

Modular symmetry and zeros in magnetic compactifications

We discuss the modular symmetry and zeros of zero-mode wave functions on two-dimensional torus $T^2$ and toroidal orbifolds $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ ($N=2,3,4,6$) with a background homogeneous magnetic field. As is well-known, magnetic flux contributes to the index in the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. The zeros in magnetic compactifications therefore play an important role, as investigated in a series of recent papers. Focusing on the zeros and their positions, we study what type of boundary conditions must be satisfied by the zero modes after the modular transformation. The consideration in this paper justifies that the boundary conditions are common before and after the modular transformation.

Index theorem on $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifolds

We investigate chiral zero modes and winding numbers at fixed points on $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifolds. It is shown that the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for the chiral zero modes leads to a formula $n_+-n_-=(-V_++V_-)/2N$, where $n_{\pm}$ are the numbers of the $\pm$ chiral zero modes and $V_{\pm}$ are the sums of the winding numbers at the fixed points on $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$. This formula is complementary to our zero-mode counting formula on the magnetized orbifolds with non-zero flux background $M \neq 0$, consistently with substituting $M = 0$ for the counting formula $n_+ - n_- = (2M - V_+ + V_-)/2N$.

Tachyon condensation in magnetic compactifications

Intersecting D-brane models and their T-dual magnetic compactifications provide an attractive framework for particle physics, allowing for chiral fermions and supersymmetry breaking. Generically, magnetic compactifications have tachyons that are usually removed by Wilson lines. However, quantum corrections prevent local minima for Wilson lines. We therefore study tachyon condensation in the simplest case, the magnetic compactification of type I string theory on a torus to eight dimensions. We find that tachyon condensation restores supersymmetry, which is broken by the magnetic flux, and we compute the mass spectrum of vector- and hypermultiplets. The gauge group $\text{SO}(32)$ is broken to $\text{USp}(16)$. We give arguments that the vacuum reached by tachyon condensation corresponds to the unique 8d superstring theory already known in the literature, with discrete $B_{ab}$ background or, in the T-dual version, the type IIB orientifold with three $\text{O}7_-$-planes, one $\text{O}7_+$-plane and eight D7-branes coincident with the $\text{O}7_+$-plane. The ground state after tachyon condensation is supersymmetric and has no chiral fermions.

Zero-mode counting formula and zeros in orbifold compactifications

We thoroughly analyze the number of independent zero modes and their zero points on the toroidal orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ ($N = 2, 3, 4, 6$) with magnetic flux background, inspired by the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We first show a complete list for the number $n_η$ of orbifold zero modes belonging to $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ eigenvalue $η$. Since it turns out that $n_η$ quite complicatedly depends on the flux quanta $M$, the Scherk-Schwarz twist phase $(α_1, α_2)$, and the $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ eigenvalue $η$, it seems hard that $n_η$ can be universally explained in a simple formula. We, however, succeed in finding a single zero-mode counting formula $n_η = (M-V_η)/N + 1$, where $V_η$ denotes the sum of winding numbers at the fixed points on the orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$. The formula is shown to hold for any pattern.

Quantum corrections for D-brane models with broken supersymmetry

Intersecting D-brane models and their T-dual magnetic compactifications yield attractive models of particle physics where magnetic flux plays a twofold role, being the source of fermion chirality as well as supersymmetry breaking. A potential problem of these models is the appearance of tachyons which can only be avoided in certain regions of moduli space and in the presence of Wilson lines. We study the effective four-dimensional field theory for an orientifold compactification of type IIA string theory and the corresponding toroidal compactification of type I string theory. After determining the Kaluza-Klein and Landau-level towers of massive states in different sectors of the model, we evaluate their contributions to the one-loop effective potential, summing over all massive states, and we relate the result to the corresponding string partition functions. We find that the Wilson-line effective potential has only saddle points, and the theory is therefore driven to the tachyonic regime. There tachyon condensation takes place and chiral fermions acquire a mass of the order of the compactification scale. We also find evidence for a tachyonic behaviour of the volume moduli. More work on tachyon condensation is needed to clarify the connection between supersymmetry breaking, a chiral fermion spectrum and vacuum stability.

Effects of localized μ-terms at the fixed points in magnetized orbifold models

We consider magnetized orbifolds, where the supersymmetric mass term for a pair of up- and down-type Higgs (super)fields, called $μ$-term, is localized at the orbifold fixed points, and study the effects on the zero-mode spectra. The zero-mode degeneracy to be identified as the generation in four-dimensional (4D) effective theories is determined by the magnetic fluxes. It is known that multiple Higgs zero-modes appear in general in magnetized orbifold models. We derive the analytic form of the $μ$-term matrix in the 4D effective theory generated by the localized sources on $T^2/Z_2$ orbifold fixed points, and find that this matrix can lead to a distinctive pattern of the eigenvalues that yields hierarchical $μ$-terms for the multiple Higgs fields. The lightest ones can be exponentially suppressed due to the localized wavefunctions of zero-modes determined by the fluxes, while the others are of the order of the compactification scale, which can provide a dynamical origin of the electroweak scale as well as a simultaneous decoupling of extra Higgs fields. We also show that a certain linear combination of the lightest Higgs fields could generate the observed mass ratios of down-type quarks through their Yukawa couplings determined by the wavefunctions.

Wavefunctions on $S^2$ with flux and branes

We formulate a six dimensional $U(1)$ gauge theory compactified on a (two dimensional) sphere $S^2$ with flux and localized brane sources. Profiles of the lowest Kaluza-Klein (KK) wavefunctions and their masses are derived analytically. In contrast to ordinary sphere compactifications, the above setup can lead to the degeneracy of and the sharp localizations of the linearly independent lowest KK modes, depending on the number of branes and their tensions. Moreover, it can naturally accommodate CP violation in Yukawa interactions.

Magnetized orbifolds and localized flux

Magnetized orbifolds play an important role in compactifications of string theories and higher-dimensional field theories to four dimensions. Magnetic flux leads to chiral fermions, it can be a source of supersymmetry breaking and it is an important ingredient of moduli stabilization. Flux quantization on orbifolds is subtle due to the orbifold singularities. Generically, Wilson line integrals around these singularities are non-trivial, which can be interpreted as localized flux. As a consequence, flux densities on orbifolds can take the same values as on tori. We determine the transition functions for the flux vector bundle on the orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the related twisted boundary conditions of zero-mode wave functions. We also construct "untwisted" zero-mode functions that are obtained for singular vector fields related to the Green's function on a torus, and we discuss the connection between zeros of the wave functions and localized flux. Twisted and untwisted zero-mode functions are related by a singular gauge transformation.

Seesaw mechanism in magnetic compactifications

In this paper, we explore a new avenue to a natural explanation of the observed tiny neutrino masses with a dynamical realization of the three-generation structure in the neutrino sector. Under the magnetized background based on $T^2/Z_2$, matter consists of multiply-degenerated zero modes and the whole intergenerational structure is dynamically determined. In this sense, we can conclude that our scenario is favored by minimality, where no degree of freedom remains to deform the intergenerational structure by hand freely. Under the consideration of brane-localized Majorana-type mass terms for an $SU(2)_L$ singlet neutrino, it is sufficient to introduce one Higgs doublet for reproducing the observed neutrino data. In all reasonable flux configurations with three right-handed neutrinos, phenomenologically acceptable parameter configurations are found.

Inflation from periodic extra dimensions

We discuss a realization of a small field inflation based on string inspired supergravities. In theories accompanying extra dimensions, compactification of them with small radii is required for realistic situations. Since the extra dimension can have a periodicity, there will appear (quasi-)periodic functions under transformations of moduli of the extra dimensions in low energy scales. Such a periodic property can lead to a UV completion of so-called multi-natural inflation model where inflaton potential consists of a sum of multiple sinusoidal functions with a decay constant smaller than the Planck scale. As an illustration, we construct a SUSY breaking model, and then show that such an inflaton potential can be generated by a sum of world sheet instantons in intersecting brane models on extra dimensions containing $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_2$ orbifold. We show also predictions of cosmic observables by numerical analyzes.

Brane-localized masses in magnetic compactifications

We discuss effects of the brane-localized mass terms on the fixed points of the toroidal orbifold $T^2/Z_2$ under the presence of background magnetic fluxes, where multiple lowest and higher-level Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes are realized before introducing the localized masses in general. Through the knowledge of linear algebra, we find that, in each KK level, one of or more than one of the degenerate KK modes are almost inevitably perturbed, when single or multiple brane-localized mass terms are introduced. When the typical scale of the compactification is far above the electroweak scale or the TeV scale, we apply this mechanism for uplifting unwanted massless or light modes which are prone to appear in models on magnetized orbifolds.

CP-violating phase on magnetized toroidal orbifolds

We study the CP-violating phase of the quark sector in the $U(8)$ flavor model on $T^2/Z_N \, (N=2,3,4,6)$ with non-vanishing magnetic fluxes, where properties of possible origins of the CP violation are investigated minutely. In this system, a non-vanishing value is mandatory in the real part of the complex modulus parameter $τ$ of the two-dimensional torus. On $T^2$ without orbifolding, underlying discrete flavor symmetries severely restrict the form of Yukawa couplings and it is very difficult to reproduce the observed pattern in the quark sector including the CP-violating phase $δ_{\rm CP}$. In cases of multiple Higgs doublets emerging on $T^2/Z_2$, the mass matrices of the zero-mode fermions can be written in the Gaussian textures by choosing appropriate configurations of vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields. When such Gaussian textures of mass matrices are realized, we show that all of the quark profiles, which are mass hierarchies among the quarks, quark mixing angles, and $δ_{\rm CP}$ can be simultaneously realized.

Supersymmetric models on magnetized orbifolds with flux-induced Fayet-Iliopoulos terms

We study supersymmetric (SUSY) models derived from the ten-dimensional SUSY Yang- Mills theory compactified on magnetized orbifolds, with nonvanishing Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms induced by magnetic fluxes in extra dimensions. Allowing the presence of FI-terms relaxes a constraint on flux configurations in SUSY model building based on magnetized backgrounds. In this case, charged fields develop their vacuum expectation values (VEVs) to cancel the FI-terms in the D-flat directions of fluxed gauge symmetries, which break the gauge symmetries and lead to a SUSY vacuum. Based on this idea, we propose a new class of SUSY magnetized orbifold models with three generations of quarks and leptons. Especially, we construct a model where the right-handed sneutrinos develop their VEVs which restore the supersymmetry but yield lepton number violating terms below the compactification scale, and show their phenomenological consequences.

Edge of a cliff

We discuss the neutrino flavor structures in the Occam's razor approach for the Dirac neutrino mass matrices. We assume that the charged lepton mass matrix takes a diagonal base, while the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix is also diagonal and we consider nine patterns of the four zero textures for the Dirac neutrinos mass matrices. We numerically analyze the left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices for nine patterns of the Dirac neutrino mass matrices and we found two interesting patterns where both normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies can be realized. We also found if the neutrino mass is normal hierarchy, this scenario will be likely to be excluded by the measurements of the Dirac CP violating phase in the T2K and NO$ν$A neutrino experiments, for instance. On the other hand, if the neutrino mass is inverted hierarchy, this scenario will be also likely to be excluded by the measurements of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, e.g., KamLAND-Zen experiment.
