Anapole superconductivity from $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric mixed-parity interband pairing

Recently, superconductivity with spontaneous time-reversal or parity symmetry breaking is attracting much attention owing to its exotic properties, such as nontrivial topology and nonreciprocal transport. Particularly fascinating phenomena are expected when the time-reversal and parity symmetry are simultaneously broken. This work shows that time-reversal symmetry-breaking mixed-parity superconducting states generally exhibit an unusual asymmetric Bogoliubov spectrum due to nonunitary interband pairing. For generic two-band models, we derive the necessary conditions for the asymmetric Bogoliubov spectrum. We also demonstrate that the asymmetric Bogoliubov quasiparticles lead to the effective anapole moment of the superconducting state, which stabilizes a nonuniform Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state at zero magnetic fields. The concept of anapole order employed in nuclear physics, magnetic materials science, strongly correlated electron systems, and optoelectronics is extended to superconductors by this work. Our conclusions are relevant for any multiband superconductors with competing even- and odd-parity pairing channels. Especially, we discuss the superconductivity in UTe$_2$.

Magnetic Properties under Pressure in Novel Spin-Triplet Superconductor UTe2

We report the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization under pressures up to 1.7GPa above the critical pressure, Pc ~ 1.5GPa, for H // a, b, c-axes in the novel spin triplet superconductor UTe2. The anisotropic magnetic susceptibility at low pressure with the easy magnetization a-axis changes to the quasi-isotropic behavior at high pressure, revealing a rapid suppression of the susceptibility for a-axis, and a gradual increase of the susceptibility for the b-axis. At 1.7GPa above Pc, magnetic anomalies are detected at T_MO ~ 3K and T_WMO ~ 10K. The former anomaly corresponds to long-range magnetic order, most likely antiferromagnetism, while the latter shows a broad anomaly, which is probably due to the development of short range order. The unusual decrease and increase of the susceptibility below T_WMO for H // a and b-axes, respectively, indicate the complex magnetic properties at low temperatures above Pc. This is related to the interplay between multiple fluctuations dominated by antiferromagnetism, ferroamgnetism, valence and Fermi surface instabilities.

Topological crystalline superconductivity in locally noncentrosymmetric CeRh$_2$As$_2$

Recent discovery of superconductivity in CeRh$_2$As$_2$ clarified an unusual $H$-$T$ phase diagram with two superconducting phases [Khim et al. arXiv:2101.09522]. The experimental observation has been interpreted based on the even-odd parity transition characteristic of locally noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Indeed, the inversion symmetry is locally broken at the Ce site, and CeRh$_2$As$_2$ molds a new class of exotic superconductors. The low-temperature and high-field superconducting phase is a candidate for the odd-parity pair-density-wave state, suggesting a possibility of topological superconductivity as spin-triplet superconductors are. In this paper, we first derive the formula expressing the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant of glide symmetric and time-reversal symmetry broken superconductors by the number of Fermi surfaces on a glide invariant line. Next, we conduct a first-principles calculation for the electronic structure of CeRh$_2$As$_2$. Combining the results, we show that the field-induced odd-parity superconducting phase of CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a platform of topological crystalline superconductivity protected by the nonsymmorphic glide symmetry and accompanied by boundary Majorana fermions.

Periodic Anderson model for magnetism and superconductivity in UTe2

We provide and analyze a periodic Anderson model for studying magnetism and superconductivity in UTe$_2$, a recently-discovered candidate for a topological spin-triplet superconductor. The 24-band tight-binding model reproduces the band structure obtained from a DFT$+U$ calculation consistent with an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Coulomb interaction of $f$-electrons enhances Ising ferromagnetic fluctuation along the $a$-axis and stabilizes spin-triplet superconductivity of either $B_{3u}$ or $A_{u}$ symmetry. When effects of pressure are taken into account in hopping integrals, the magnetic fluctuation changes to antiferromagnetic one, and accordingly spin-singlet superconductivity of $A_{g}$ symmetry is stabilized. Based on the results, we propose pressure-temperature and magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams revealing multiple superconducting phases as well as an antiferromagnetic phase. In particular, a mixed-parity superconducting state with spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking is predicted.

Thermodynamic electric quadrupole moments of nematic phases from first-principles calculation

The electronic nematic phase emerging with spontaneous rotation symmetry breaking is a central issue of modern condensed matter physics. In particular, various nematic phases in iron-based superconductors and high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors are extensively studied recently. Electric quadrupole moments (EQMs) are one of the order parameters characterizing these nematic phases in a unified way, and elucidating EQMs is a key to understanding these nematic phases. However, the quantum-mechanical formulation of the EQMs in crystals is a nontrivial issue because the position operators are non-periodic and unbound. Recently, the EQMs have been formulated by local thermodynamics, and such {\it thermodynamic EQMs} may be used to characterize the fourfold rotation symmetry breaking in materials. In this paper, we calculate the thermodynamic EQMs in iron-based superconductors LaFeAsO and FeSe as well as a cuprate superconductor La$_2$CuO$_4$ by a first-principles calculation. We show that owing to the orbital degeneracy the EQMs in iron-based superconductors are mainly determined by the geometric properties of wave functions. This result is in sharp contrast to the cuprate superconductor, in which the EQMs are dominated by distortion of the Fermi surface.

Thermodynamic approach to electric quadrupole moments

Higher-rank electric/magnetic multipole moments are attracting attention these days as candidate order parameters for exotic material phases. However, quantum-mechanical formulation of those multipole moments is still an ongoing issue. In this paper, we propose a thermodynamic definition of electric quadrupole moments as a measure of symmetry breaking, following previous studies of orbital magnetic dipole moments and magnetic quadrupole moments. The obtained formulas are illustrated with a model of orbital-ordered nematic phases of iron-based superconductors.

Chiral photocurrent in parity-violating magnet and enhanced response in topological antiferromagnet

Rectified electric current induced by irradiating light, so-called photocurrent, is an established phenomenon in optoelectronic physics. In this paper, we present a comprehensive classification of the photocurrent response arising from the parity violation in bulk systems. We clarify the contrasting role of $\mathcal{T}$- and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetries and consequently find a new type of photocurrent phenomena characteristic of parity-violating magnets, intrinsic Fermi surface effect and gyration current. Especially, the gyration current is induced by the circularly-polarized light and it is the counterpart of the shift current caused by the linearly-polarized light. This photocurrent adds a new functionality of materials studied in various fields of condensed matter physics such as multiferroics and spintronics. A list of materials is provided. Furthermore, we show that the gyration current is strongly enhanced by topologically nontrivial band dispersion. On the basis of the microscopic analysis of Dirac models, we demonstrate the divergent photocurrent response and elucidate the importance of tilting of Dirac cones.

Nonlinear electric transport in odd-parity magnetic multipole systems: Application to Mn-based compounds

Violation of parity symmetry gives rise to various physical phenomena such as nonlinear transport and cross-correlated responses. In particular, the nonlinear conductivity has been attracting a lot of attentions in spin-orbit coupled semiconductors, superconductors, topological materials, and so on. In this paper we present theoretical study of the nonlinear conductivity in odd-parity magnetic multipole ordered systems whose $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is essentially distinct from the previously studied acentric systems. Combining microscopic formulation and symmetry analysis, we classify the nonlinear responses in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems as well as $\mathcal{T}$-symmetric (non-magnetic) systems, and uncover nonlinear conductivity unique to the odd-parity magnetic multipole systems. A giant nonlinear Hall effect, nematicity-assisted dichroism and magnetically-induced Berry curvature dipole effect are proposed and demonstrated in a model for Mn-based magnets.

Superconductivity induced by fluctuations of momentum-based multipoles

Recent studies of unconventional superconductivity have focused on charge or spin fluctuation, instead of electron-phonon coupling, as an origin of attractive interaction between electrons. On the other hand, a multipole order, which represents electrons' degrees of freedom in strongly correlated and spin-orbit-coupled systems, has recently been attracting much attention. Stimulated by this background, we investigate multipole-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, which proposes a new pairing mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. Indeed, previous works have shown spin-triplet superconductivity induced by fluctuations of odd-parity electric multipole orders in isotropic systems. In this study, we establish a general formulation of the multipole-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity for all multipole symmetries, in both isotropic and crystalline systems. As a result, we reveal various anisotropic pairings induced by odd-parity and/or higher-order multipole fluctuations, which are beyond the ordinary charge or spin fluctuations. Topological superconductivity due to the mechanism is also discussed. Based on the obtained results, we discuss unconventional superconductivity in doped SrTiO$_3$, PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$, Li$_2$(Pd, Pt)$_3$B, and magnetic multipole metals.

Laser-induced topological $s$-wave superconductivity in bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides

In this paper, we propose a way to realize topological $s$-wave superconductivity with application of circularly polarized laser light in two-dimensional bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Using Floquet theory, we analyze a tight-binding model of bilayer TMDs with time-periodic electric fields. After deriving an effective Hamiltonian, we investigate topological properties of the $s$-wave superconducting state. The laser light induces valley-dependent layer polarization and makes the system to be a topologically nontrivial superconducting state characterized by the Chern number. We show topological phase diagrams in the absence and presence of the Kane-Mele spin-orbit coupling which causes hidden spin polarization in bilayer TMDs. Although the topological phase diagram is affected by the spin-orbit coupling, topological superconductivity can be realized without relying on the spin-orbit coupling in sharp contrast to a previous proposal of laser-induced topological superconductivity [K. Takasan, \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{95}, 134508 (2017)]. We also discuss experimental setups to detect the topological phase.

Ferroelectricity-induced multiorbital odd-frequency superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$

We demonstrate that SrTiO$_3$ can be a platform for observing the bulk odd-frequency superconducting state owing to the multiorbital/multiband nature. We consider a three-orbital tight-binding model for SrTiO$_3$ in the vicinity of a ferroelectric critical point. Assuming an intraorbital spin-singlet $s$-wave superconducting order parameter, it is shown that the odd-frequency pair correlations are generated due to the intrinsic LS coupling which leads to the local orbital mixing. Furthermore, we show the existence of additional odd-frequency pair correlations in the ferroelectric phase, which is induced by an odd-parity orbital hybridization term proportional to the ferroelectric order parameter. We also perform a group theoretical classification of the odd-frequency pair amplitudes based on the fermionic and space group symmetries of the system. The classification table enables us to predict dominant components of the odd-frequency pair correlations based on the symmetry of the normal state Hamiltonian that we take into account. Furthermore, we show that experimental signatures of the odd-parity orbital hybridization, which is an essential ingredient for the ferroelectricity-induced odd-frequency pair correlations, can be observed in the spectral functions and density of states.

Strongly parity-mixed superconductivity in Rashba-Hubbard model

Heterostructures containing strongly correlated electron systems provide a platform to clarify interplay of electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling in unconventional superconductors. Motivated by recent fabrication of artificially-engineered heavy fermion superlattices and high-temperature cuprate superconductors, we conduct a thorough study on superconductivity in Rashba-Hubbard model. In contrast to previous weak coupling approaches, we employ fluctuation-exchange approximation to describe quantum critical magnetic fluctuations and resulting superconductivity. As a result, robust Fermi surfaces against magnetic fluctuations, incommensurate spin fluctuations, and a strongly parity-mixed superconducting phase are demonstrated in a wide range of electron filling from type-II van Hove singularity to half-filling. We also clarify impacts of type-II van Hove singularity on magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity. Whereas the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing always dominant, subdominant spin-triplet pairing with either $p$-wave or $f$-wave symmetry shows a comparable magnitude, especially near the type-II van Hove singularity. Our results resolve unsettled issues on strongly correlated Rashba systems and uncover candidate systems of nonreciprocal transport and topological superconductivity.

Giant surface Edelstein effect in $d$-wave superconductors

Edelstein effect is useful for electric control of magnetic moment. However, Joule heating created by a dissipative current is harmful for its practical applications. In this paper, we investigate two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs) with either $s$-wave or $d$-wave symmetry, and demonstrate that a surface Edelstein effect is significantly enhanced in $d$-wave NCSs. The origin of the enhancement is attributed to surface Majorana states characteristic of gapless spin-singlet superconductors. In the view of superconducting spintronics, this result would give a route to magnetic domain switching by dissipationless supercurrent. We discuss a possible experimental observation in cuprate superconductor heterostructures and heavy fermion superlattices.

Multiple odd-parity superconducting phases in bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides

We study unconventional superconductivity in a two-dimensional locally noncentrosymmetric triangular lattice. The model is relevant to bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides with 2H$_b$ stacking structure, for example. The superconducting instability is analyzed by solving the linearized Eliashberg equation within the random phase approximation. We show that ferromagnetic fluctuations are dominant owing to the existence of disconnected Fermi pockets near van Hove singularity, and hence odd-parity spin-triplet superconductivity is favored. In the absence of the spin-orbit coupling, we find that odd-parity $f$-wave superconducting state is stabilized in a wide range of carrier density and interlayer coupling. Furthermore, we investigate impacts of the layer-dependent staggered Rashba and Zeeman spin-orbit coupling on the superconductivity. Multiple odd-parity superconducting phase diagrams are obtained as a function of the spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb interaction. Especially, a topological chiral $p$-wave pairing state is stabilized in the presence of a moderate Zeeman spin-orbit coupling. Our results shed light on a possibility of odd-parity superconductivity in various ferromagnetic van der Waals materials.

Magnon gravitomagnetoelectric effect in noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnetic insulators

We study the magnon contribution to the gravitomagnetoelectric (gravito-ME) effect, in which the magnetization is induced by a temperature gradient, in noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnetic insulators. This phenomenon is totally different from the ME effect, because the temperature gradient is coupled to magnons but an electric field is not. We derive a general formula of the gravito-ME susceptibility in terms of magnon wave functions and find that a difference in $g$ factors of magnetic ions is crucial. We also apply our formula to a specific model. Although the obtained gravito-ME susceptibility is small, we discuss several ways to enhance this phenomenon.

Insulator-metal transition and topological superconductivity in UTe2 from a first-principles calculation

We theoretically study superconductivity in UTe$_2$, which is a recently-discovered strong candidate for an odd-parity spin-triplet superconductor. Theoretical studies for this compound faced difficulty because first-principles calculations predict an insulating electronic state, incompatible with superconducting instability. To overcome this problem, we take into account electron correlation effects by a GGA$+U$ method and show the insulator-metal transition by Coulomb interaction. Using Fermi surfaces obtained as a function of $U$, we clarify topological properties of possible superconducting states. Fermi surface formulas for the three-dimensional winding number and three two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ numbers indicate topological superconductivity at an intermediate $U$ for all the odd-parity pairing symmetry in the $Immm$ space group. Symmetry and topology of superconducting gap node are analyzed and the gap structure of UTe$_2$ is predicted. Topologically protected low-energy excitations are highlighted, and experiments by bulk and surface probes are proposed to link Fermi surfaces and pairing symmetry. Based on the results, we also discuss multiple superconducting phases under magnetic fields, which were implied by recent experiments.

Chirality polarizations and spectral bulk-boundary correspondence

Surface physics dominated by bulk properties has been one of the central interests in modern condensed matter physics, from electric polarization to bulk-boundary correspondence of topological insulators and superconductors. Here, we extend theory of electric polarization to chirality polarizations, that is, surface charges corresponding to local antisymmetries characterized as a bulk property. Using the notion of chirality polarizations, we prove the recently proposed spectral bulk-boundary correspondence, a generalization of bulk-boundary correspondence in chiral symmetric systems into complex frequencies. We show a physically transparent proof via Wannier functions and a formal proof by considering the change of surface chirality charges, highlighting the similarities and the differences between electric polarization and chirality polarizations.

Symmetry indicators for topological superconductors

The systematic diagnosis of band topology enabled by the method of "symmetry indicators" underlies the recent advances in the search for new materials realizing topological crystalline insulators. Such an efficient method has been missing for superconductors because the band structure in the superconducting phase is not usually available. In this work, we establish symmetry indicators for weak-coupling superconductors that detect nontrivial topology based on the representations of the metallic band structure in the normal phase, assuming a symmetry property of the gap function. We demonstrate the applications of our formulas using examples of tight-binding models and density-functional-theory band structures of realistic materials.
