Multipole superconductivity in nonsymmorphic Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Discoveries of marked similarities to high-$T_{\text{c}}$ cuprate superconductors point to the realization of superconductivity in the doped $J_{\text{eff}} = 1 / 2$ Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Contrary to the mother compound of cuprate superconductors, several stacking patterns of in-plane canted antiferromagnetic moments have been reported, which are distinguished by the ferromagnetic components as $-++-$, $++++$, and $-+-+$. In this paper, we clarify unconventional features of the superconductivity coexisting with $-++-$ and $-+-+$ structures. Combining the group theoretical analysis and numerical calculations for an effective $J_{\text{eff}} = 1 / 2$ model, we show unusual superconducting gap structures in the $-++-$ state protected by nonsymmorphic magnetic space group symmetry. Furthermore, our calculation shows that the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconductivity is inevitably stabilized in the $-+-+$ state since the odd-parity magnetic $-+-+$ order makes the band structure asymmetric by cooperating with spin-orbit coupling. These unusual superconducting properties are signatures of magnetic multipole order in nonsymmorphic crystal.

Odd-parity superconductivity in bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides

Spin-orbit coupling in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) causes spin-valley locking giving rise to unconventional optical, transport, and superconducting properties. In this paper, we propose exotic superconductivity in bilayer group-IV TMDCs by symmetry control. The sublattice-dependent hidden spin-orbit coupling arising from local inversion symmetry breaking in the crystal structure may stabilize the odd-parity superconductivity by purely $s$-wave local pairing interaction. The stability of the odd-parity superconducting state depends on the bilayer stacking. The 2H$_b$ stacking in MoX$_2$ and WX$_2$ (X =S, Se) favors the odd-parity superconductivity due to interlayer quantum interference. On the other hand, the odd-parity superconductivity is suppressed by the 2H$_a$ stacking of NbSe$_2$. Calculating the phase diagram of the tight-binding model derived from first principles band calculations, we conclude that the intercalated bilayer MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ are candidates for a new class of odd-parity superconductors by spin-orbit coupling.

Möbius topological superconductivity in UPt$_3$

Intensive studies for more than three decades have elucidated multiple superconducting phases and odd-parity Cooper pairs in a heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$. We identify a time-reversal invariant superconducting phase of UPt$_3$ as a recently proposed topological nonsymmorphic superconductivity. Combining the band structure of UPt$_3$, order parameter of $E_{\rm 2u}$ representation allowed by $P6_3/mmc$ space group symmetry, and topological classification by $K$-theory, we demonstrate the nontrivial $Z_2$-invariant of three-dimensional DIII class enriched by glide symmetry. Correspondingly, double Majorana cone surface states appear at the surface Brillouin zone boundary. Furthermore, we show a variety of surface states and clarify the topological protection by crystal symmetry. Majorana arcs corresponding to tunable Weyl points appear in the time-reversal symmetry broken B-phase. Majorana cone protected by mirror Chern number and Majorana flat band by glide-winding number are also revealed.

Majorana flat bands, chiral Majorana edge states, and unidirectional Majorana edge states in noncentrosymmetric superconductors

We study two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric nodal superconductors under Zeeman field and clarify the field angle dependence of topological properties. It has been shown that the nodal excitation acquires an excitation gap due to the Zeeman field perpendicular to anti-symmetric spin-orbit coupling, and then gapful topological superconductivity is realized. We show that the system undergoes gapful-gapless transition against tilting of the field. The gapless phase remains to show a finite band gap and unusual Majorana edge states in between the bulk bands. The Majorana edge states naturally propagate in a same direction between oppositely-oriented edges. We elucidate relations of such unidirectional Majorana edge states with chiral edge states in the gapful topological superconducting phase and previously studied Majorana flat bands at zero Zeeman field. A compact formula of topological invariants characterizing the edge states is given. The gapful-gapless topological phase transition and associated evolution of Majorana states are demonstrated in a model for $D+p$-wave superconductivity. Experimental realization in recently fabricated cuprate heterostructures and heavy fermion thin films is discussed.

Fate of Majorana modes in $\mathrm{CeCoIn}_5$/$\mathrm{YbCoIn}_5$ superlattices -a test bed for reduction of topological classification-

In this paper, we propose $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}/\mathrm{YbCoIn_5}$ superlattice systems as a test bed for the reduction of topological classification in free fermions. We find that the system with quad-layer of $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}$ shows a topological crystalline superconducting phase with the mirror Chern number eight at the non-interacting level. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in the presence of two-body interactions, gapless edge modes are no longer protected by the symmetry in the system with quad-layer, but are protected in the systems with bi- or tri-layer. This clearly exemplifies the reduction of topological classification from $\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}$ to $\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_8$.

Laser-induced topological superconductivity in cuprate thin films

We propose a possible way to realize topological superconductivity with application of laser light to superconducting cuprate thin films. Applying Floquet theory to a model of $d$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we derive an effective model and discuss its topological nature. Interplay of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the laser light effect induces the synthetic magnetic fields, thus making the system gapped. Then the system acquires the topologically non-trivial nature which is characterized by Chern numbers. The effective magnetic fields do not create the vortices in superconductors, and thus the proposed scheme provides a promising way to dynamically realize a topological superconductor in cuprates. We also discuss an experimental way to detect the signature.

Paramagnetically induced gapful topological superconductors

We propose a generic scenario for realizing gapful topological superconductors (TSCs) from gapless spin-singlet superconductors (SCs). Noncentrosymmetric nodal SCs in two dimension are shown to be gapful under a Zeeman field, as a result of the cooperation of inversion-symmetry breaking and time-reversal-symmetry breaking. In particular, non-s-wave SCs acquire a large excitation gap. Such paramagnetically-induced gapful SCs may be classified into TSCs in the symmetry class D specified by the Chern number. We show nontrivial Chern numbers over a wide parameter range for spin-singlet SCs. A variety of the paramagnetically-induced gapful TSCs are demonstrated, including D+p-wave TSC, extended S+p-wave TSC, p+D+f-wave TSC, and s+P-wave TSC. Natural extension toward three-dimensional Weyl SCs is also discussed.

Nonsymmorphic Weyl superconductivity in UPt_3 based on E_2u representation

We show that a heavy fermion superconductor UPt_3 is a topological Weyl superconductor with tunable Weyl nodes. Adopting a generic order parameter in the E_2u representation allowed by nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry, we clarify unusual gap structure and associated topological properties. The pair creation, pair annihilation, and coalescence of Weyl nodes are demonstrated in the time-reversal symmetry broken B-phase. At most 98 point nodes compatible with Blount's theorem give rise to line node-like behaviors in low-energy excitations, consistent with experimental results. We also show an arc node protected by the nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry on the Brillouin zone face.

Electric octupole order in bilayer Rashba system

The odd-parity multipole is an emergent degree of freedom, leading to spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking. The odd-parity multipole order may occur by forming staggered even-parity multipoles in a unit cell. We focus on a locally noncentrosymmetric bilayer Rashba system, and study an odd-parity electric octupole order caused by the antiferro stacking of local electric quadrupoles. Analyzing the forward scattering model, we show that the electric octupole order is stabilized by a layer-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The roles of the spin-orbit coupling are clarified on the basis of the analytic formula of multipole susceptibility. The spin texture allowed in the D_2d point group symmetry and its magnetic response are revealed. Furthermore, we show that the parity-breaking quantum critical point appears in the magnetic field. The possible realization of the electric octupole order in bilayer high-T_c cuprate superconductors is discussed.

Topologically stable gapless phases in nonsymmorphic superconductors

We study topological stability of nodes in nonsymmorphic superconductors (SCs). In particular, we demonstrate that line nodes in nonsymmirphic odd-parity SCs are protected by the interplay between topology and nonsymmorphic symmetry. As an example, it is shown that the $E_{2u}$-superconducting state of UPt$_3$ hosts the topologically stable line node at the Brillouin zone face. Our theory indicates that the existence of spin-orbit coupling is essential for protecting such a line node, complementing the Norman's group theory argument. Developing the topological arguments, we also argue generalization to point nodes and to other symmetry cases beyond the group theory arguments.

Superconductivity protected by spin-valley locking in ion-gated MoS2

Symmetry-breaking has been known to play a key role in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with strong spin-orbit-interaction (SOI). The studies, however, have been so far mainly focused on a particular type of SOI, known as Rashba SOI, whereby the electron spin is locked to its momentum at a right-angle, thereby leading to an in-planar helical spin texture. Here we discuss electric-field-induced superconductivity in molybdenum disulphide (MoS2), which exhibits a fundamentally different type of intrinsic SOI manifested by an out-of-plane Zeeman-type spin polarization of energy valleys. We find an upper critical field of approximately 52 T at 1.5 K, which indicates an enhancement of the Pauli limit by a factor of four as compared to that in centrosymmetric conventional superconductors. Using realistic tight-binding calculations, we reveal that this unusual behaviour is due to an inter-valley pairing that is symmetrically protected by Zeeman-type spin-valley locking against external magnetic fields. Our study sheds a new light on the interplay of inversion asymmetry with SOI in confined geometries, and its unprecedented role in superconductivity.

Superconductivity in magnetic multipole states

Stimulated by recent studies of superconductivity and magnetism with local and global broken inversion symmetry, we investigate the superconductivity in magnetic multipole states in locally noncentrosymmetric metals. We consider a one-dimensional zigzag chain with sublattice-dependent antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling and suppose three magnetic multipole orders: monopole order, dipole order, and quadrupole order. It is demonstrated that the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state, the pair-density wave (PDW) state, and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state are stabilized by these multipole orders, respectively. We show that the PDW state is a topological superconducting state specified by the nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ number and winding number. The origin of the FFLO state without macroscopic magnetic moment is attributed to the asymmetric band structure induced by the magnetic quadrupole order and spin-orbit coupling.

Topological D+p-wave superconductivity in Rashba systems

We show two-dimensional "strong" topological superconductivity in d-wave superconductors (SCs). Although the topological invariant of the bulk wave function cannot be defined in d_{x^2-y^2}-wave and d_{xy}-wave SCs because of nodal excitations, the bulk energy spectrum of d-wave SCs on a substrate is fully gapped in a magnetic field. Then the superconducting state is specified by a nontrivial Chern number, and hence topologically nontrivial properties are robust against disorders and interactions. We discuss high-temperature topological superconductivity in cuprate SCs recently fabricated on a substrate. Furthermore, we show that the three-dimensional noncentrosymmetric d-wave SC is a Weyl SC hosting topologically protected Weyl nodes. Noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion SCs, such as CeRhSi_3 and CeIrSi_3, are candidates for Weyl SCs.

Excitation spectra and wave functions of quasiparticle bound states in bilayer Rashba superconductors

We study the excitation spectra and the wave functions of quasiparticle bound states at a vortex and an edge in bilayer Rashba superconductors under a magnetic field. In particular, we focus on the quasiparticle states at the zero energy in the pair-density wave state in a topologically non-trivial phase. We numerically demonstrate that the quasiparticle wave functions with zero energy are localized at both the edge and the vortex core if the magnetic field exceed the critical value.

Robust zero-energy bound states around a pair-density-wave vortex core in locally noncentrosymmetric superconductors

We numerically investigate the electronic structures around a vortex core in a bilayer superconducting system, with s-wave pairing, Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman magnetic field, with use of the quasiclassical Green's function method. The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) phase and the so-called pair-density wave (PDW) phase appear in the temperature-magnetic-field phase diagram in a bulk uniform system [Phys. Rev. B 86, 134514 (2012)]. In the low magnetic field perpendicular to the layers, the zero-energy vortex bound states in the BCS phase are split by the Zeeman magnetic field. On the other hand, the PDW state appears in the high magnetic field, and sign of the order parameter is opposite between the layers. We find that the vortex core suddenly shrinks and the zero-energy bound states appear by increasing the magnetic field through the BCS-PDW transition. We discuss the origin of the change in vortex core structure between the BCS and PDW states by clarifying the relation between the vortex bound states and the bulk energy spectra. In the high magnetic field region, the PDW state and vortex bound states are protected by the spin-orbit coupling. These characteristic behaviors in the PDW state can be observed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy.

Odd-parity superconductivity by competing spin-orbit coupling and orbital effect in artificial heterostructures

We show that odd-parity superconductivity occurs in multilayer Rashba systems without requiring spin-triplet Cooper pairs. A pairing interaction in the spin-singlet channel stabilizes the odd-parity pair-density-wave (PDW) state in the magnetic field parallel to the two-dimensional conducting plane. It is shown that the layer-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the orbital effect play essential roles for the PDW state in binary and tricolor heterostructures. We demonstrate that the odd-parity PDW state is a symmetry-protected topological superconducting state characterized by the one-dimensional winding number in the symmetry class BDI. The superconductivity in the artificial heavy-fermion superlattice CeCoIn_5/YbCoIn_5 and bilayer interface SrTiO_3/LaAlO_3 is discussed.

Topological Crystalline Superconductivity in Locally Non-centrosymmetric Multilayer Superconductors

Topological crystalline superconductivity in the locally non-centrosymmetric multilayer superconductors (SCs) is proposed. We study the odd-parity pair-density wave (PDW) state induced by the spin-singlet pairing interaction through the spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the PDW state is a topological crystalline SC protected by a mirror symmetry, although it is topologically trivial according to the classification based on the standard topological periodic table. The topological property of the mirror subsectors is intuitively explained by adiabatically changing the BdG Hamiltonian. A subsector of the bilayer PDW state reduces to the two-dimensional non-centrosymmetric SC, while a subsector of trilayer PDW state is topologically equivalent to the spinless p-wave SC. Chiral Majorana edge modes in trilayers can be realized without Cooper pairs in the spin-triplet channel and chemical potential tuning.

Electron Correlation Effects in Non-Centrosymmetric Metals in the Weak Coupling Regime

The two-dimensional Rashba-Hubbard model is investigated in order to clarify the electron correlation effects in non-centrosymmetric metals. The renormalization effect on Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) is calculated on the basis of second-order and third-order perturbation theories. We show that RSOC is enhanced by the electron correlation. On the other hand, the spin-splitting of the Fermi momentum (SFM) is robust against the electron correlation effect because the enhancement of RSOC is cancelled by the $k$-mass renormalization. The cancellation is almost perfect in often adopted models in which the momentum dependence of RSOC is linear in the quasiparticle velocity. A small correction to the SFM appears otherwise. We show that the same results are obtained for other antisymmetric spin-orbit couplings in non-centrosymmetric systems, such as the synthetic spin-orbit coupling in cold atoms.
