Gradient estimates for electric fields with multi-scale inclusions in the quasi-static regime

In this paper, we are concerned with the gradient estimate of the electric field due to two nearly touching dielectric inclusions, which is a central topic in the theory of composite materials. We derive accurate quantitative characterisations of the gradient fields in the transverse electromagnetic case within the quasi-static regime, which clearly indicate the optimal blowup rate or non-blowup of the gradient fields in different scenarios. There are mainly two novelties of our study. First, the sizes of the two material inclusions may be of different scales. Second, we consider our study in the quasi-static regime, whereas most of the existing studies are concerned with the static case.

Geometrical and topological properties of transmission resonance and artificial mirage

Transmission eigenfunctions are certain interior resonant modes that are of central importance to the wave scattering theory. In this paper, we present the discovery of novel global rigidity properties of the transmission eigenfunctions associated with the Maxwell system. It is shown that the transmission eigenfunctions carry the geometrical and topological information of the underlying domain. We present both analytical and numerical results of these intriguing rigidity properties. As an interesting application, we propose an illusion scheme of artificially generating a mirage image of any given optical object.

On new surface-localized transmission eigenmodes

Consider the transmission eigenvalue problem \[ (Δ+k^2\mathbf{n}^2) w=0,\ \ (Δ+k^2)v=0\ \ \mbox{in}\ \ Ω;\quad w=v,\ \ \partial_νw=\partial_νv=0\ \ \mbox{on} \ \partialΩ. \] It is shown in [12] that there exists a sequence of eigenfunctions $(w_m, v_m)_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ associated with $k_m\rightarrow \infty$ such that either $\{w_m\}_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ or $\{v_m\}_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ are surface-localized, depending on $\mathbf{n}>1$ or $0<\mathbf{n}<1$. In this paper, we discover a new type of surface-localized transmission eigenmodes by constructing a sequence of transmission eigenfunctions $(w_m, v_m)_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ associated with $k_m\rightarrow \infty$ such that both $\{w_m\}_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $\{v_m\}_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ are surface-localized, no matter $\mathbf{n}>1$ or $0<\mathbf{n}<1$. Though our study is confined within the radial geometry, the construction is subtle and technical.

Surface-localized transmission eigenstates, super-resolution imaging and pseudo surface plasmon modes

We present the discovery of a novel and intriguing global geometric structure of the (interior) transmission eigenfunctions associated with the Helmholtz system. It is shown in generic scenarios that there always exists a sequence of transmission eigenfunctions with the corresponding eigenvalues going to infinity such that those eigenfunctions are localized around the boundary of the domain. We provide a comprehensive and rigorous justification in the case within the radial geometry, whereas for the non-radial case, we conduct extensive numerical experiments to quantitatively verify the localizing behaviours. The discovery provides a new perspective on wave localization. As significant applications, we develop a novel inverse scattering scheme that can produce super-resolution imaging effects and propose a method of generating the so-called pseudo surface plasmon resonant (PSPR) modes with a potential sensing application.

On vanishing near corners of conductive transmission eigenfunctions

In this paper, we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem associated with a general conductive transmission condition and study the geometric structures of the transmission eigenfunctions. We prove that under a mild regularity condition in terms of the Herglotz approximations of one of the pair of the transmission eigenfunctions, the eigenfunctions must be vanishing around a corner on the boundary. The Herglotz approximation can be regarded as the Fourier transform of the transmission eigenfunction in terms of the plane waves, and the growth rate of the transformed function can be used to characterize the regularity of the underlying wave function. The geometric structures derived in this paper include the related results in [5,19] as special cases and verify that the vanishing around corners is a generic local geometric property of the transmission eigenfunctions.

Simultaneous recovery of surface heat flux and thickness of a solid structure by ultrasonic measurements

This paper is concerned with a practical inverse problem of simultaneously reconstructing the surface heat flux and the thickness of a solid structure from the associated ultrasonic measurements. In a thermoacoustic coupling model, the thermal boundary condition and the thickness of a solid structure are both unknown, while the measurements of the propagation time by ultrasonic sensors are given. We reformulate the inverse problem as a PDE-constrained optimization problem by constructing a proper objective functional. We then develop an alternating iteration scheme which combines the conjugate gradient method and the deepest decent method to solve the optimization problem. Rigorous convergence analysis is provided for the proposed numerical scheme. By using experimental real data from the lab, we conduct extensive numerical experiments to verify several promising features of the newly developed method.

Sharp estimate of electric field from a conductive rod and application

We are concerned with the quantitative study of the electric field perturbation due to the presence of an inhomogeneous conductive rod embedded in a homogenous conductivity. We sharply quantify the dependence of the perturbed electric field on the geometry of the conductive rod. In particular, we accurately characterise the localisation of the gradient field (i.e. the electric current) near the boundary of the rod where the curvature is sufficiently large. We develop layer-potential techniques in deriving the quantitative estimates and the major difficulty comes from the anisotropic geometry of the rod.The result complements and sharpens several existing studies in the literature. It also generates an interesting application in EIT (electrical impedance tomography) in determining the conductive rod by a single measurement, which is also known as the Calderon's inverse inclusion problem in the literature.

Mathematical analysis of plasmon resonances for curved nanorods

We investigate plasmon resonances for curved nanorods which present anisotropic geometries. We analyze quantitative properties of the plasmon resonance and its relationship to the metamaterial configurations and the anisotropic geometries of the nanorods. Based on delicate and subtle asymptotic and spectral analysis of the layer potential operators, particularly the Neumann-Poincaré operators, associated with anisotropic geometries, we derive sharp asymptotic formulae of the corresponding scattering field in the quasi-static regime. By carefully analyzing the asymptotic formulae, we establish sharp conditions that can ensure the occurrence of the plasmonic resonance. The resonance conditions couple the metamaterial parameters, the wave frequency and the nanorod geometry in an intricate but elegant manner. We provide thorough resonance analysis by studying the wave fields both inside and outside the nanorod. Furthermore, our quantitative analysis indicates that different parts of the nanorod induce varying degrees of resonance. Specifically, the resonant strength at the two end-parts of the curved nanorod is more outstanding than that of the facade-part of the nanorod. This paper presents the first theoretical study on plasmon resonances for nanostructures within anisotropic geometries.

Spectral properties of Neumann-Poincare operator and anomalous localized resonance in elasticity beyond quasi-static limit

This paper is concerned with the polariton resonances and their application for cloaking due to anomalous localized resonance (CALR) for the elastic system within the finite frequency regime beyond the quasi-static approximation. We first derive the complete spectral system of the Neumann-Poincaré operator associated with the elastic system within the finite frequency regime. Based on the obtained spectral results, we construct a broad class of elastic configurations that can induce polariton resonances beyond the quasi-static limit. As an application, the invisibility cloaking effect is achieved through constructing a class of core-shell-matrix metamaterial structures provided the source is located inside a critical radius. Moreover, if the source is located outside the critical radius, it is proved that there is no resonance.

Identifying variations of magnetic anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring

We are concerned with the inverse problem of identifying magnetic anomalies with varing parameters beneath the Earth using geomagnetic monitoring. Observations of the change in Earth's magnetic field--the secular variation--provide information about the anomalies as well as their variations. In this paper, we rigorously establish the unique recovery results for this magnetic anomaly detection problem. We show that one can uniquely recover the locations, the variation parameters including the growth or decaying rates as well as their material parameters of the anomalies. This paper extends the existing results in [8] by two of the authors to varying anomalies.

On identifying magnetized anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring II. A Magnetohydrodynamic Model

This paper is a continuation and an extension of our recent work [13] on the identification of magnetized anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring, which aims to establish a rigorous mathematical theory for the geomagnetic detection technology. Suppose a collection of magnetized anomalies is presented in the shell of the Earth. By monitoring the variation of the magnetic field of the Earth due to the presence of the anomalies, we establish sufficient conditions for the unique recovery of those unknown anomalies. In [13], the geomagnetic model was described by a linear Maxwell system. In this paper, we consider a much more sophisticated and complicated magnetohydrodynamic model, which stems from the widely accepted dynamo theory of geomagnetics.

Asymptotic behavior of spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator in Helmhotz system

In this paper, we are concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the Neumann-Poincare operator for Helmholtz system. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of spherical Bessel function near the origin and/or approach higher order, we prove the asymptotic behavior of spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator when frequency is small enough and/or the order is large enough. The results show that spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator is continuous at the origin and converges to zero from the complex plane in general.

Analysis of surface polariton resonance for nanoparticles in elastic system

This paper is concerned with the analysis of surface polariton resonance for nanoparticles in linear elasticity. With the presence of nanoparticles, we first derive the perturbed displacement field associated to a given elastic source field. It is shown that the leading-order term of the perturbed elastic wave field is determined by the Neumann-Poincáre operator associated to the Lamé system. By analyzing the spectral properties of the aforesaid Neumann-Poincáre operator, we study the polariton resonance for the elastic system. The results may find applications in elastic wave imaging.

On identifying magnetized anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring

We propose and investigate the inverse problem of identifying magnetized anomalies beneath the Earth using the geomagnetic monitoring. Suppose a collection of magnetized anomalies presented in the shell of the Earth. The presence of the anomalies interrupts the magnetic field of the Earth, monitored above the Earth. Using the difference of the magnetic fields before and after the presence of the magnetized anomalies, we show that one can uniquely recover the locations as well as their material parameters of the anomalies. Our study provides a rigorous mathematical theory to the geomagnetic detection technology that has been used in practice.

Recovery of an embedded obstacle and the surrounding medium for Maxwell's system

In this paper, we are concerned with the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem of recovering a complex scatterer by the corresponding electric far-field data. The complex scatterer consists of an inhomogeneous medium and a possibly embedded perfectly electric conducting (PEC) obstacle. The far-field data are collected corresponding to incident plane waves with a fixed incident direction and a fixed polarisation, but frequencies from an open interval. It is shown that the embedded obstacle can be uniquely recovered by the aforementioned far-field data, independent of the surrounding medium. Furthermore, if the surrounding medium is piecewise homogeneous, then the medium can be recovered as well. Those unique recovery results are new to the literature. Our argument is based on low-frequency expansions of the electromagnetic fields and certain harmonic analysis techniques.

On an inverse boundary problem arising in brain imaging

We consider the inverse problem of recovering both an unknown electric current and the surrounding electromagnetic parameters of a medium from boundary measurements. This inverse problem arises in brain imaging. We show that under generic conditions one can recover both the source and the electromagnetic parameters if these are piecewise constant and the current source is invariant in a fixed direction or a harmonic function.

On spectral properties of Neuman-Poincare operator and plasmonic resonances in 3D elastostatics

We consider plasmon resonances and cloaking for the elastostatic system in $\mathbb{R}^3$ via the spectral theory of Neumann-Poincaré operator. We first derive the full spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator for the 3D elastostatic system in the spherical geometry. The spectral result is of significant interest for its own sake, and serves as a highly nontrivial extension of the corresponding 2D study in [8]. The derivation of the spectral result in 3D involves much more complicated and subtle calculations and arguments than that for the 2D case. Then we consider a 3D plasmonic structure in elastostatics which takes a general core-shell-matrix form with the metamaterial located in the shell. Using the obtained spectral result, we provide an accurate characterisation of the anomalous localised resonance and cloaking associated to such a plasmonic structure.

Full and Partial Cloaking in Electromagnetic Scattering

In this paper, we consider two regularized transformation-optics cloaking schemes for electromagnetic (EM) waves. Both schemes are based on the blowup construction with the generating sets being, respectively, a generic curve and a planar subset. We derive sharp asymptotic estimates in assessing the cloaking performances of the two constructions in terms of the regularization parameters and the geometries of the cloaking devices. The first construction yields an approximate full-cloak, whereas the second construction yields an approximate partial-cloak. Moreover, by incorporating properly chosen conducting layers, both cloaking constructions are capable of nearly cloaking arbitrary EM contents. This work complements the existing results in [5--7] on approximate EM cloaks with the generating set being a singular point, and it also extends [9,25] on regularized full and partial cloaks for acoustic waves governed by the Helmholtz system to the more challenging EM case governed by the full Maxwell system.
