Characterizing slopes for Legendrian knots

We establish a criterion relating smooth and contact characterizing slopes under a uniqueness assumption. Let $L$ be a Legendrian representative of a knot $K\subset S^3$ with standard contact structure, and assume that the isotopy class of $L$ is uniquely determined by its classical invariants: the Thurston--Bennequin invariant $tb(L)$ and the rotation number. Then, for any non-zero rational number $r$, if $r+tb(L)$ is a smooth characterizing slope for $K$, it becomes a contact characterizing slope for $L$. As applications, we study the characterizing slopes for Legendrian representatives of the unknot, trefoil, figure-eight knot, cinquefoil, $5_2$, and $\overline{5_2}$.

Knotted solid tori in contact manifolds

In this note we study solid tori in contact manifolds. Specifically, we study the width of a knot type and give criteria for when it is equal to the maximal Thurston-Bennequin invariant, and when it is larger. We also prove there are many ``non-thickenable" tori in many knot types. These had previously only been observed in $S^3$.

Accuracy and Consistency of LLMs in the Registered Dietitian Exam: The Impact of Prompt Engineering and Knowledge Retrieval

Large language models (LLMs) are fundamentally transforming human-facing applications in the health and well-being domains: boosting patient engagement, accelerating clinical decision-making, and facilitating medical education. Although state-of-the-art LLMs have shown superior performance in several conversational applications, evaluations within nutrition and diet applications are still insufficient. In this paper, we propose to employ the Registered Dietitian (RD) exam to conduct a standard and comprehensive evaluation of state-of-the-art LLMs, GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Gemini 1.5 Pro, assessing both accuracy and consistency in nutrition queries. Our evaluation includes 1050 RD exam questions encompassing several nutrition topics and proficiency levels. In addition, for the first time, we examine the impact of Zero-Shot (ZS), Chain of Thought (CoT), Chain of Thought with Self Consistency (CoT-SC), and Retrieval Augmented Prompting (RAP) on both accuracy and consistency of the responses. Our findings revealed that while these LLMs obtained acceptable overall performance, their results varied considerably with different prompts and question domains. GPT-4o with CoT-SC prompting outperformed the other approaches, whereas Gemini 1.5 Pro with ZS recorded the highest consistency. For GPT-4o and Claude 3.5, CoT improved the accuracy, and CoT-SC improved both accuracy and consistency. RAP was particularly effective for GPT-4o to answer Expert level questions. Consequently, choosing the appropriate LLM and prompting technique, tailored to the proficiency level and specific domain, can mitigate errors and potential risks in diet and nutrition chatbots.

Algebraically overtwisted tight $3$-manifolds from $+1$ surgeries

We execute Avdek's algorithm to find many algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifolds by contact $+1$ surgeries. In particular, we show that a contact $1/k$ surgery on the standard contact $3$-sphere along any positive torus knot with the maximum Thurston-Bennequin invariant yields an algebraically overtwisted and tight $3$-manifold, where $k$ is a positive integer.

Strongly exceptional Legendrian connected sum of two Hopf links

In this paper, we give a complete coarse classification of strongly exceptional Legendrian realizations of connected sum of two Hopf links in contact 3-spheres. This is the first classification result about exceptional Legendrian representatives for connected sums of link families.

On geography of symplectic fillings of contact branched covers

In this paper, we determine the Euler characteristics and signatures of the exact symplectic fillings of the contact double, 3-fold or 4-fold cyclic covers of the standard contact 3-sphere branched over certain transverse quasi-positive links. These links include all quasi-positive knots with crossing numbers smaller than 11 and all quasi-positive links with crossing numbers smaller than 12 and nonzero nullity.

Nonexistence and existence of fillable contact structures on 3-manifolds

In the first part of this paper, we construct infinitely many hyperbolic closed 3-manifolds which admit no symplectic fillable contact structure. All these 3-manifolds are obtained by Dehn surgeries along L-space knots or L-space two-component links. In the second part of this paper, we show that Dehn surgeries along certain knots and links, including those considered in the first part, admit Stein fillable contact structures as long as the surgery coefficients are sufficiently large. This provides some new evidence for the high surgery conjecture raised by Stipsicz.

Some applications of Menke's JSJ decomposition for symplectic fillings

We apply Menke's JSJ decomposition for symplectic fillings to several families of contact 3-manifolds. Among other results, we complete the classification up to orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of strong symplectic fillings of lens spaces. We show that exact symplectic fillings of contact manifolds obtained by surgery on certain Legendrian negative cables are the result of attaching a Weinstein 2-handle to an exact filling of a lens space. For large families of contact structures on Seifert fibered spaces over $S^2$, we reduce the problem of classifying exact symplectic structures to the same problem for universally tight or canonical contact structures. Finally, virtually overtwisted circle bundles over surfaces with genus greater than one and negative twisting number are seen to have unique exact fillings.

Contact (+1)-surgeries on rational homology 3-spheres

In this paper, sufficient conditions for contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian knots in contact rational homology 3-spheres to have vanishing contact invariants or to be overtwisted are given. They can be applied to study contact $(\pm1)$-surgeries along Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere. We also obtain a sufficient condition for contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian two-component links in the standard contact 3-sphere to be overtwisted via their front projections.

Contact (+1)-surgeries along Legendrian Two-component Links

In this paper, we study contact surgeries along Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere. On one hand, we use algebraic methods to prove the vanishing of the contact Ozsváth-Szabó invariant for contact $(+1)$-surgery along certain Legendrian two-component links. The main tool is a link surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology developed by Manolescu and Ozsváth. On the other hand, we use contact-geometric argument to show the overtwistedness of the contact 3-manifolds obtained by contact $(+1)$-surgeries along Legendrian two-component links whose two components are linked in some special configurations.

A bound for rational Thurston-Bennequin invariants

In this paper, we introduce a rational $τ$ invariant for rationally null-homologous knots in contact 3-manifolds with nontrivial Ozsváth-Szabó contact invariants. Such an invariant is an upper bound for the sum of rational Thurston-Bennequin invariant and the rational rotation number of the Legendrian representatives of the knot. In the special case of Floer simple knots in L-spaces, we can compute the rational $τ$ invariants by correction terms.

Strong symplectic fillability of contact torus bundles

In this paper, we study strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability of some tight contact structures on negative parabolic and negative hyperbolic torus bundles over the circle. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $π$ in $S^1$-direction on a negative parabolic torus bundle, we completely determine its strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $π$ in $S^1$-direction on a negative hyperbolic torus bundle, we give a necessary condition for it being strongly symplectically fillable. For the virtually overtwisted tight contact structure on the negative parabolic torus bundle with monodromy $-T^n$ ($n<0$), we prove that it is Stein fillable. By the way, we give a partial answer to a conjecture of Golla and Lisca.

Fillings of unit cotangent bundles of nonorientable surfaces

We prove that any minimal weak symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on the unit cotangent bundle of a nonorientable closed surface other than the real projective plane is s-cobordant rel boundary to the disk cotangent bundle of the surface. If the nonorientable surface is the Klein bottle, then we show that the minimal weak symplectic filling is unique up to homeomorphism.

Stein fillings of contact 3-manifolds obtained as Legendrian surgeries

In this note, we classify Stein fillings of an infinite family of contact 3-manifolds up to diffeomorphism. Some contact 3-manifolds in this family can be obtained by Legendrian surgeries on $(S^3,ξ_{std})$ along certain Legendrian 2-bridge knots. We also classify Stein fillings, up to symplectic deformation, of an infinite family of contact 3-manifolds which can be obtained by Legendrian surgeries on $(S^3,ξ_{std})$ along certain Legendrian twist knots. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of Stein fillings of an infinite family of contact hyperbolic 3-manifolds up to symplectic deformation.
