Improving the Direct Determination of $|V_{ts}|$ using Deep Learning

An $s$-jet tagging approach to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix component $|V_{ts}|$ directly in the dileptonic final state events of the top pair production in proton-proton collisions has been previously studied by measuring the branching fraction of the decay of one of the top quarks by $t \to sW$. The main challenge is improving the discrimination performance between strange jets from top decays and other jets. This study proposes novel jet discriminators, called DISAJA, using a Transformer-based deep learning method. The first model, DISAJA-H, utilizes multi-domain inputs (jets, leptons, and missing transverse momentum). An additional model, DISAJA-L, further improves the setup by using lower-level jet constituent information, rather than the high-level clustered information. DISAJA-L is a novel model that combines low-level jet constituent analysis with event classification using multi-domain inputs. The model performance is evaluated via a CMS-like LHC Run 2 fast simulation by comparing various statistical test results to those from a Transformer-based jet classifier which considers only the individual jets. This study shows that the DISAJA models have significant performance gains over the individual jet classifier, and we show the potential of the measurement during Run 3 of the LHC and the HL-LHC.

Identification of $tqg$ flavor-changing neutral current interactions using machine learning techniques

Flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNCs) are forbidden at tree level in the Standard Model (SM), but they can be enhanced in physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) scenarios. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of deep learning techniques to enhance the sensitivity of current and future collider experiments to the production of a top quark and an associated parton through the $tqg$ FCNC process, which originates from the $tug$ and $tcg$ vertices. The $tqg$ FCNC events can be produced with a top quark and either an associated gluon or quark, while SM only has events with a top quark and an associated quark. We apply machine learning techniques to distinguish the $tqg$ FCNC events from the SM backgrounds, including $qg$-discrimination variables. We use the Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) method as a baseline classifier, assuming that the leading jet originates from the associated parton. We compare with a Transformer-based deep learning method known as the Self-Attention for Jet-parton Assignment (SAJA) network, which allows us to include information from all jets in the event, regardless of their number, eliminating the necessity to match the associated parton to the leading jet. The \SaJa\ network with qg-discrimination variables has the best performance, giving expected upper limits on the branching ratios Br($t \to qg$) that are 25-35\% lower than those from the BDT method.

Probing bottom-associated production of a TeV scale scalar decaying to a top quark and dark matter at the LHC

A minimal non-thermal dark matter model that can explain both the existence of dark matter and the baryon asymmetry in the universe is studied. It requires two color-triplet, iso-singlet scalars with $\mathcal{O}$(TeV) masses and a singlet Majorana fermion with a mass of $\mathcal{O}$(GeV). The fermion becomes stable and can play the role of the dark matter candidate. We consider the fermion to interact with a top quark via the exchange of QCD-charged scalar fields coupled dominantly to third generation fermions. The signature of a single top quark production associated with a bottom quark and large missing transverse momentum opens up the possibility to search for this type of model at the LHC in a way complementary to existing monotop searches.

Measurement of normalized differential $t\bar{t}$ cross sections in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV

Measurements of normalized differential cross sections for top quark pair production are performed in the dilepton decay channels in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The differential cross sections are measured with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. We have measured the cross sections differentially as a function of the kinematic properties of the leptons (electron or muon), jets from bottom quark hadronization, top quarks, and top quark pairs at the particle and parton levels. The $t\bar{t}$ differential cross section measurements are compared to several Monte Carlo generators that implement calculations up to next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics interfaced with parton showering, and also to fixed-order theoretical calculations of top quark pair production beyond next-to-leading order accuracy.

Study of the Top-quark Pair Production in Association with a Bottom-quark Pair from Fast Simulations at the LHC

A large number of top quarks will be produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for Run II period. This will allow us to measure the rare processes from the top sector in great details. We present the study of the top-quark pair production in association with a bottom-quark pair (ttbb) from fast simulations for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The differential distributions of ttbb are compared with the top-quark pair production with two additional jets (ttjj) and with the production in association with the Higgs (ttH), where the Higgs decays to a bottom-quark pair. The significances of ttbb process in the dileptonic and semileptonic decay mode are calculated with the data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10 fb-1, which is foreseen to be collected in the early Run II period. This study will be an important input in searching for new physics beyond the standard model as well as in searching for ttH process where the Yukawa coupling with the top quark can be directly measured.

The design of the optimized muon beamline

We designed an optimized antimuon beamline with the simulation using G4beamline and TRANSPORT software packages for Heavy Ion Accelerator Project in South Korea. This research suggests the optimized muon beamline can transport $2.4\times10^{8}$ antimuons per second to a circle with a radius of 3 cm. In terms of muon rate, this is competitive with world leading muon beam facilities.
