Entropy function approach to charged BTZ black hole

We find solution to the metric function f(r)=0 of charged BTZ black hole making use of the Lambert function. The condition of extremal charged BTZ black hole is determined by a non-linear relation of M_e(Q)=Q^2(1-\ln Q^2). Then, we study the entropy of extremal charged BTZ black hole using the entropy function approach. It is shown that this formalism works with a proper normalization of charge Q for charged BTZ black hole because AdS_2 x S^1 represents near-horizon geometry of the extremal charged BTZ black hole. Finally, we introduce the Wald's Noether formalism to reproduce the entropy of the extremal charged BTZ black hole without normalization when using the dilaton gravity approach.

Local free-fall temperature of a RN-AdS black hole

We use the global embedding Minkowski space (GEMS) geometries of a (3+1)-dimensional curved Reissner-Nordström(RN)-AdS black hole spacetime into a (5+2)-dimensional flat spacetime to define a proper local temperature, which remains finite at the event horizon, for freely falling observers outside a static black hole. Our extended results include the known limiting cases of the RN, Schwarzschild--AdS, and Schwarzschild black holes.

Mixmaster universe in the z=3 deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

The z=3 deformed Horava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constants ωand εleads to a nonrelativistic "mixmaster" cosmological model. The potential of theory is given by the sum of IR and UV potentials in the ADM Hamiltonian formalism. It turns out that the presence of the UV-potential cannot suppress chaotic behaviors existing in the IR-potential, which comes from curvature anisotropy.

Topologically massive gravity on AdS$_2$ spacetimes

We study the topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant on AdS$_2$ spacetimes by making use of dimensional reduction. For a constant dilaton, this two-dimensional model admits three AdS$_2$ vacuum solutions, which are related to AdS$_3$ and warped AdS$_3$ with an identification upon uplifting three dimensions. We carry out the perturbation analysis around these backgrounds to find what is a physically propagating field. It turns out that a mode of $δF = (h-f/e)$ is merely a redundant field of dilaton $φ$ in the absence of Chern-Simons terms, while it becomes a massive scalar in the presence of Chern-Simons terms. This shows clearly that the proper number of physically propagating degrees of freedom is one for the topologically massive gravity. Moreover, at the points of $K=l,l/3$, $δF$ becomes a massless scalar which implies that there is no physically propagating degrees of freedom at the chiral point.

Thermodynamics of Gauss-Bonnet black holes revisited

We investigate the Gauss-Bonnet black hole in five dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetimes (GBAdS). We analyze all thermodynamic quantities of the GBAdS, which is characterized by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $c$ and mass $M$, comparing with those of the Born-Infeld-AdS (BIAdS), Reissner-Norström-AdS black holes (RNAdS), Schwarzschild-AdS (SAdS), and BTZ black holes. For $c<0$ we cannot obtain the black hole with positively definite thermodynamic quantities of mass, temperature, and entropy because the entropy does not satisfy the area-law. On the other hand, for $c>0$, we find the BIAdS-like black hole, showing that the coupling $c$ plays the role of pseudo-charge. Importantly, we could not obtain the SAdS in the limits of $c\to 0$, which means that the GBAdS is basically different from the SAdS. In addition, we clarify the connections between thermodynamic and dynamical stability. Finally, we also conjecture that if a black hole is big and thus globally stable, its quasinormal modes may take analytic expressions.

Thermodynamics of regular black hole

We investigate thermodynamics for a magnetically charged regular black hole (MCRBH), which comes from the action of general relativity and nonlinear electromagnetics, comparing with the Reissner-Norström (RN) black hole in both four and two dimensions after dimensional reduction. We find that there is no thermodynamic difference between the regular and RN black holes for a fixed charge $Q$ in both dimensions. This means that the condition for either singularity or regularity at the origin of coordinate does not affect the thermodynamics of black hole. Furthermore, we describe the near-horizon AdS$_2$ thermodynamics of the MCRBH with the connection of the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory. We also identify the near-horizon entropy as the statistical entropy by using the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence.

Thermodynamics and phase transitions in the Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black holes

We investigate the Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black hole (BIAdS) solutions in the four dimensions, which is a nonlinear generalization of the Reissner-Norström-AdS black hole (RNAdS). We analyze all thermodynamic quantities of the BIAdS in the canonical ensembles, which are characterized by the charge $Q$, the mass $M$, the nonlinear parameter $b$, comparing with those of the RNAdS and Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. We find the forbidden region of $0\le bQ <0.5$ for the presence of a charged BIAdS. We also discuss the Hawking-Page phase transitions in the BIAdS black holes. Here we obtain a new Hawking-Page phase transition for the $bQ=0.5$ critical BIAdS.

Quasinormal modes from potentials surrounding the charged dilaton black hole

We clarify the purely imaginary quasinormal frequencies of a massless scalar perturbation on the 3D charged-dilaton black holes. This case is quite interesting because the potential-step appears outside the event horizon similar to the case of the electromagnetic perturbations on the large Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. It turns out that the potential-step type provides the purely imaginary quasinormal frequencies, while the potential-barrier type gives the complex quasinormal modes.

Thermodynamics of Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes in three dimensions

We show that all thermodynamic quantities of the Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes in three dimensions can be obtained from the dilaton and its potential of two dimensional dilaton gravity through the dimensional reduction. These are all between non-rotating uncharged BTZ black hole (NBTZ) and charged BTZ black hole (CBTZ).

Ruppeiner geometry and 2D dilaton gravity in the thermodynamics of black holes

We resolve the controversial issue of the geometric approach to the black hole thermodynamics. The geometric description of the equilibrium thermodynamics comes from Ruppeiner geometry based on a metric on the thermodynamic state space. For this purpose, we consider the Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RN-AdS) black hole which provides two different ensembles: canonical ensemble for fixed-charge case and grand canonical ensemble for fixed-potential case. Two cases are independent and cannot be mixed into each other. Hence, we calculate different Ruppeiner curvatures for two ensembles. However, we could not find the consistent behaviors of Ruppeiner curvature corresponding to those of heat capacity. Alternatively, instead of the Ruppeiner curvature, we newly propose the curvature scalar in the 2D dilaton gravity approach which shows the features of extremal, Davies and minimum temperature points of RN-AdS black hole, clearly.

Resonances in a circular dielectric cavity

We study resonance distributions in a circular dielectric cavity. It is shown that the decay-rate distribution has a peak structure and the details of the peak are consistent with the classical survival probability time distribution. We also investigate the behavior of the complex resonance positions at the small opening limit. At the large $n$ limit, the real part of complex resonance positions approaches the solutions with different $m$ of Dirichlet problem with a scale $n^{-2}$ and the imaginary part goes zero as $n^{-2m}$ for TM and $n^{-2(m+1)}$ for TE polarization, where $m$ is the order of the resonance.

Entropy of (1+1)-dimensional charged black hole to all orders in the Planck length

We study the statistical entropy of a scalar field on the (1+1)-dimensional Maxwell-dilaton background without an artificial cutoff considering corrections to all orders in the Planck length from a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) on the quantum state density. In contrast to the previous results of the higher dimensional cases having adjustable parameter, we obtain an unadjustable entropy due to the independence of the minimal length while this entropy is proportional to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Thermodynamic duality between RN black hole and 2D dilaton gravity

All thermodynamic quantities of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole can be obtained from the dilaton and its potential of two dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity. The dual relations of four thermodynamic laws are also established. Furthermore, the near-horizon thermodynamics of the extremal RN black hole is completely described by the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory which is obtained by perturbing around the AdS$_2$-horizon.

Entropy of an extremal regular black hole

We introduce a magnetically charged extremal regular black hole in the coupled system of Einstein gravity and nonlinear electrodynamics. Its near horizon geometry is given by $AdS_2\times S^2$. It turns out that the entropy function approach does not automatically lead to a correct entropy of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. This contrasts to the case of the extremal Reissner-Norström black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell theory. We conclude that the entropy function approach does not work for a magnetically charged extremal regular black hole without singularity, because of the nonlinearity of the entropy function.

New attractor mechanism for spherically symmetric extremal black holes

We introduce a new attractor mechanism to find the entropy for spherically symmetric extremal black holes. The key ingredient is to find a two-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity with the dilaton potential $V(ϕ)$. The condition of an attractor is given by $\nabla^2ϕ=V(ϕ_0)$ and $\bar{R}_2=-V^{\prime}(ϕ_0)$ and for a constant dilaton $ ϕ=ϕ_0$, these are also used to find the location of the degenerate horizon $r=r_{e}$ of an extremal black hole. As a nontrivial example, we consider an extremal regular black hole obtained from the coupled system of Einstein gravity and nonlinear electrodynamics. The desired Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is successfully recovered from the generalized entropy formula combined with the 2D dilaton gravity, while the entropy function approach does not work for obtaining this entropy.

Quantum Cooling Evaporation Process in Regular Black Holes

We investigate a universal behavior of thermodynamics and evaporation process for the regular black holes. We newly observe an important point where the temperature is maximum, the heat capacity is changed from negative infinity to positive infinity, and the free energy is minimum. Furthermore, this point separates the evaporation process into the early stage with negative heat capacity and the late stage with positive heat capacity. The latter represents the quantum cooling evaporation process. As a result, the whole evaporation process could be regarded as the inverse Hawking-Page phase transition.

We calculate the statistical entropy of a scalar field on the background of (2+1)-dimensional de Sitter space without an artificial cutoff considering corrections to all orders in the Planck length from a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) on the quantum state density. The desired entropy proportional to the horizon perimeter is obtained.

Considering corrections to all orders in the Planck length on the quantum state density from a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP), we calculate the statistical entropy of the scalar field on the background of the Schwarzschild black hole without any cutoff. We obtain the entropy of the massive scalar field proportional to the horizon area.
