Weight decomposition for toroidal abelian fibrations

We study the action of the rational multiplication by $N$ map on the Chow groups of degenerations of principally polarized abelian varieties of torus rank at most one, as well as its interaction with the Fourier transform. As applications, we compute the class of the unit section, prove a generalized weight decomposition of the relative Chow motive of the universal family of such degenerations, and completely determine its tautological ring.

On generalized Beauville decompositions

Motivated by the Beauville decomposition of an abelian scheme and the "Perverse = Chern" phenomenon for a compactified Jacobian fibration, we study in this paper splittings of the perverse filtration for compactified Jacobian fibrations. On the one hand, we prove for the Beauville-Mukai system associated with an irreducible curve class on a $K3$ surface the existence of a Fourier-stable multiplicative splitting of the perverse filtration, which extends the Beauville decomposition for the nonsingular fibers. Our approach is to construct a Lefschetz decomposition associated with a Fourier-conjugate $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple, which relies heavily on recent work concerning the interaction between derived equivalences and LLV algebras for hyper-Kähler varieties. Motivic lifting and connections to the Beauville-Voisin conjectures are also discussed. On the other hand, we construct for any $g\geq 2$ a compactified Jacobian fibration of genus $g$ curves such that each curve is integral with at worst simple nodes and the (multiplicative) perverse filtration does not admit a multiplicative splitting. Our argument relies on the recently established universal double ramification cycle relations. This shows that in general an extension of the Beauville decomposition cannot exist for compactified Jacobian fibrations even when the simplest singular point appears.

Fourier transforms and Abel-Jacobi theory

We relate Fourier transforms between compactified Jacobians over the moduli space of stable curves to logarithmic Abel-Jacobi theory. As an application, we compute the pushforward of divisor monomials on compactified Jacobians in terms of the twisted double ramification cycle formula.

The intrinsic cohomology ring of the universal compactified Jacobian over the moduli space of stable curves

The purpose of this paper is to study the cohomology rings of universal compactified Jacobians. Over the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of Deligne-Mumford stable marked curves with $n\geq 1$, on the one hand we show that the cohomology ring of a universal fine compactified Jacobian is sensitive to the choice of a nondegenerate stability condition which answers a question of Pandharipande; on the other hand, we prove that the cohomology ring admits a degeneration via the perverse filtration which is independent of the (nondegenerate) stability condition. The latter defines the intrinsic cohomology ring of the universal compactified Jacobian which only relies on $g,n$. Our main tools include the support theorems, the recently developed Fourier theory for dualizable abelian fibrations, and the universal double ramification cycle relations associated with the universal Picard stack.

Counting surfaces on Calabi-Yau 4-folds I: Foundations

This is the first part in a series of papers on counting surfaces on Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Besides the Hilbert scheme of 2-dimensional subschemes, we introduce \emph{two} types of moduli spaces of stable pairs. We show that all three moduli spaces are related by GIT wall-crossing and parametrize stable objects in the bounded derived category. We construct \emph{reduced} Oh-Thomas virtual cycles on the moduli spaces via Kiem-Li cosection localization and prove that they are deformation invariant along Hodge loci. As an application, we show that the variational Hodge conjecture holds for any family of Calabi-Yau 4-folds supporting a non-zero reduced virtual cycle.

Counting surfaces on Calabi-Yau 4-folds II: $\mathrm{DT}$-$\mathrm{PT}_0$ correspondence

This is the second part in a series of papers on counting surfaces on Calabi-Yau 4-folds. In this paper, we introduce $K$-theoretic $\mathrm{DT}, \mathrm{PT}_0, \mathrm{PT}_1$ invariants and conjecture a $\mathrm{DT}$-$\mathrm{PT}_0$ correspondence. For certain tautological insertions, we derive Lefschetz principles in both the compact and toric case allowing reductions to 3-dimensional $\mathrm{DT}, \mathrm{PT}$ invariants. We also develop a topological vertex and conjecture a $\mathrm{DT}$-$\mathrm{PT}_0$ vertex correspondence. These methods enable us to verify our conjectures in several examples.

Chow rings of stacks of prestable curves I

We study the Chow ring of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ of prestable curves and define the notion of tautological classes on this stack. We extend formulas for intersection products and functoriality of tautological classes under natural morphisms from the case of the tautological ring of the moduli space $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of stable curves. This paper provides foundations for the second part of the paper. In the appendix (joint with J. Skowera), we develop the theory of a proper, but not necessary projective, pushforward of algebraic cycles. The proper pushforward is necessary for the construction of the tautological rings of $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ and is important in its own right. We also develop operational Chow groups for algebraic stacks.

Pixton's formula and Abel-Jacobi theory on the Picard stack

Let $A=(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ be a vector of integers with $d=\sum_{i=1}^n a_i$. By partial resolution of the classical Abel-Jacobi map, we construct a universal twisted double ramification cycle $\mathsf{DR}^{\mathsf{op}}_{g,A}$ as an operational Chow class on the Picard stack $\mathfrak{Pic}_{g,n,d}$ of $n$-pointed genus $g$ curves carrying a degree $d$ line bundle. The method of construction follows the log (and b-Chow) approach to the standard double ramification cycle with canonical twists on the moduli space of curves [arXiv:1707.02261, arXiv:1711.10341, arXiv:1708.04471]. Our main result is a calculation of $\mathsf{DR}^{\mathsf{op}}_{g,A}$ on the Picard stack $\mathfrak{Pic}_{g,n,d}$ via an appropriate interpretation of Pixton's formula in the tautological ring. The basic new tool used in the proof is the theory of double ramification cycles for target varieties [arXiv:1812.10136]. The formula on the Picard stack is obtained from [arXiv:1812.10136] for target varieties $\mathbb{CP}^n$ in the limit $n \rightarrow \infty$. The result may be viewed as a universal calculation in Abel-Jacobi theory. As a consequence of the calculation of $\mathsf{DR}^{\mathsf{op}}_{g,A}$ on the Picard stack $\mathfrak{Pic}_{g,n,d}$, we prove that the fundamental classes of the moduli spaces of twisted meromorphic differentials in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ are exactly given by Pixton's formula (as conjectured in the appendix to [arXiv:1508.07940] and in [arXiv:1607.08429]). The comparison result of fundamental classes proven in [arXiv:1909.11981] plays a crucial role in our argument. We also prove the set of relations in the tautological ring of the Picard stack $\mathfrak{Pic}_{g,n,d}$ associated to Pixton's formula.

Chow rings of stacks of prestable curves II

We continue the study of the Chow ring of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ of prestable curves begun in [arXiv:2012.09887v2]. In genus $0$, we show that the Chow ring of $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$ coincides with the tautological ring and give a complete description in terms of (additive) generators and relations. This generalizes earlier results by Keel and Kontsevich-Manin for the spaces of stable curves. Our argument uses the boundary stratification of the moduli stack together with the study of the first higher Chow groups of the strata, in particular providing a new proof of the results of Kontsevich and Manin.

Curves on K3 surfaces in divisibility two

We prove a conjecture of Maulik, Pandharipande, and Thomas expressing the Gromov--Witten invariants of K3 surfaces for divisibility two curve classes in all genus in terms of weakly holomorphic quasimodular forms of level two. Then, we establish the holomorphic anomaly equation in divisibility two in all genus. Our approach involves a refined boundary induction, relying on the top tautological group of the moduli space of smooth curves, together with a degeneration formula for reduced virtual fundamental class with imprimitive curve classes. We use the double ramification relations with target variety as a new tool to prove the initial condition. The relationship between the holomorphic anomaly equation for higher divisibility and the conjectural multiple cover formula of Oberdieck and Pandharipande is discussed in detail and illustrated with several examples.

Tautological relations for stable maps to a target variety

We define tautological relations for the moduli space of stable maps to a target variety. Using the double ramification cycle formula for target varieties of Janda-Pandharipande-Pixton-Zvonkine, we construct nontrivial tautological relations parallel to Pixton's double ramification cycle relations for the moduli of curves. Examples and applications are discussed.
