Semi-classical limit of quantum scattering states for the nonlinear Hartree equation

This article concerns the long-time dynamics of quantum particles in the semi-classical regime. First, we show that for the nonlinear Hartree equation with short-range interaction potential, small-data solutions obey dispersion bounds and they scatter, where the smallness conditions and the bounds are independent of the small parameter $\hbar\in(0,1]$ representing the reduced Planck constant. Then, taking the semi-classical limit $\hbar\to0$, we prove that the Wigner transforms of such quantum scattering states converge weakly-* to the corresponding classical scattering states for the Vlasov equation. As a direct consequence, we establish small-data scattering for the Vlasov equation without assuming regularity on initial data. Our analysis is based on a new uniform dispersion estimate for the free Schrödinger flow, which is simple but crucial to include singular interaction potentials such as inverse power-law potential $\frac{1}{|x|^a}$ with $1<a<\frac{5}{3}$.

Modified scattering for the Vlasov-Riesz system with long-range interactions

We study the long-time asymptotic behavior of small-data solutions to the three-dimensional Vlasov--Riesz system with the inverse power-law potential $λ|x|^{-α}$ in the strictly long-range regime ($0 < α< 1$). By introducing finite- and infinite-time modified wave operators for the characteristic flows, we describe the asymptotic dynamics via convergence to an effective profile along a suitably modified reference flow, and establish modified scattering of solutions. Our proof relies mainly on ODE techniques for the characteristic flows, while also using PDE methods for weighted $W^{1,\infty}$-bounds. Compared with the earlier result (of Huang and Kwon), our Lagrangian approach extends modified scattering to the broader regime $\frac{1}{2}<α<1$ and provides a distinct and more robust argument.

The non-relativistic limit of scattering states for the Vlasov equation with short-range interaction potentials

We study the relativistic and non-relativistic Vlasov equation driven by short-range interaction potentials and identify the large time dynamics of solutions. In particular, we construct global-in-time solutions launched from small initial data and prove that they scatter along the forward free flow to well-behaved limits as $t \to \infty$. Moreover, we prove the existence of wave operators for such a regime and, upon constructing the aforementioned time asymptotic limits, use the wave operator formulation to prove for the first time that the relativistic scattering states converge to their non-relativistic counterparts as $c \to \infty$.

On the dispersive estimates for the discrete Schrödinger equation on a honeycomb lattice

The discrete Schrödinger equation on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice is a fundamental tight-binding approximation model that describes the propagation of waves on graphene. For free evolution, we first show that the degenerate frequencies of the dispersion relation are completely characterized by three symmetric periodic curves (Theorem 2.1), and that the three curves meet at Dirac points where conical singularities appear (see Figure 2.1). Based on this observation, we prove the $L^1\to L^\infty$ dispersion estimates for the linear flow depending on the frequency localization (Theorem 2.3). Collecting all, we obtain the dispersion estimate with $O(|t|^{-2/3})$ decay as well as Strichartz estimates. As an application, we prove small data scattering for a nonlinear model (Theorem 2.10). The proof of the key dispersion estimates is based on the associated oscillatory integral estimates with degenerate phases and conical singularities at Dirac points. Our proof is direct and uses only elementary methods.

Global well-posedness of the nonlinear Hartree equation for infinitely many particles with singular interaction

The nonlinear Hartree equation (NLH) in the Heisenberg picture admits steady states of the form $γ_f=f(-Δ)$ representing quantum states of infinitely many particles. In this article, we consider the time evolution of perturbations from a large class of such steady states via the three-dimensional NLH. We prove that if the interaction potential $w$ has finite measure and initial states have finite relative entropy, then solutions preserve the relative free energy, and they exist globally in time. This result extends the important work of Lewin and Sabin [arXiv:1310.0603] to singular interaction cases.

On the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony regularization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation

The Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation (BBM) is introduced as a regularization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) for long water waves \cite{BBM1972}. In this paper, we establish the convergence from the BBM to the KdV for energy class solutions. As a consequence, employing the conservation laws, we extend the known temporal interval of validity for the BBM regularization.

Global existence versus finite time blowup dichotomy for the dispersion managed NLS

We consider the Gabitov-Turitsyn equation or the dispersion managed nonlinear Schrödinger equation of a power-type nonlinearity \[ i\partial_t u+ d_\text{av} \partial_x^2u+\int_0^1 e^{-ir\partial_x^2}\big(|e^{ir\partial_x^2}u|^{p-1}e^{ir\partial_x^2}u\big)dr=0 \] and prove the global existence versus finite time blowup dichotomy for the mass-supercritical cases, that is, $p>9$.

On the Korteweg-de Vries limit for the Boussinesq equation

The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is known as a universal equation describing various long waves in dispersive systems. In this article, we prove that in a certain scaling regime, a large class of rough solutions to the Boussinesq equation are approximated by the sums of two counter-propagating waves solving the KdV equations. It extends the earlier result by \cite{Schneider1998} to slightly more regular than $L^2$-solutions. Our proof is based on robust Fourier analysis methods developed for the low regularity theory of nonlinear dispersive equations.

Semiclassical equivalence of two white dwarf models as ground states of the relativistic Hartree-Fock and Vlasov-Poisson energies

We are concerned with the semi-classical limit for ground states of the relativistic Hartree-Fock energies (HF) under a mass constraint, which are considered as the quantum mean-field model of white dwarfs \cite{LeLe}. In Jang and Seok \cite{JS}, fermionic ground states of the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson energy (VP) are constructed as a classical mean-field model of white dwarfs, and are shown to be equivalent to the classical Chandrasekhar model. In this paper, we prove that as the reduced Planck constant $\hbar$ goes to the zero, the $\hbar$-parameter family of the ground energies and states of (HF) converges to the fermionic ground energy and state of (VP) with the same mass constraint.

Uniqueness and orbital stability of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a partial confinement

We consider the 3d cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a strong 2d harmonic potential. The model is physically relevant to observe the lower-dimensional dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate, but its ground state cannot be constructed by the standard method due to its supercritical nature. In Bellazzini-Boussaïd-Jeanjean-Visciglia \cite{BBJV}, the authors constructed a proper ground state introducing a constrained energy minimization problem. In this paper, we further investigate the properties of the ground state. First, we show that as the partial confinement is increased, the 1d ground state is derived from the 3d energy minimizer with a precise rate of convergence. Then, by employing this dimension reduction limit, we prove the uniqueness of the 3d minimizer provided that the confinement is sufficiently strong. Consequently, we obtain the orbital stability of the minimizer, which improves that of the set of minimizers in the previous work \cite{BBJV}.

On steady states for the Vlasov-Schrödinger-Poisson system

The Vlasov-Schrödinger-Poisson system is a kinetic-quantum hybrid model describing quasi-lower dimensional electron gases. For this system, we construct a large class of 2D kinetic/1D quantum steady states in a bounded domain as generalized free energy minimizers, and we show their finite subband structure, monotonicity, uniqueness and conditional dynamical stability. Our proof is based on the concentration-compactness principle, but some additional difficulties arise due to lack of compactness originated from the hybrid nature (see Remark 1.9). To overcome the difficulties, we introduce a 3-step refinement of a minimizing sequence by rearrangement and partial minimization problems, and the coercivity lemma for the free energy (Lemma 5.3) is crucially employed.

On the NLS approximation for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

In this paper, developing a new approach based on Fourier analysis methods for dispersive PDEs, we establish a low regularity NLS approximation for the one-dimensional cubic Klein-Gordon equation. Our main result includes energy class solutions which are formally asymptotically in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. A precise rate of convergence is also obtained assuming more regularity.

On the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a toroidal trap in the strong confinement regime

We consider the 3D cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a strong toroidal trap. In the first part, we show that as the confinement is strengthened, a large class of global solutions to the time-dependent model can be described by 1D flows solving the 1D periodic NLS (Theorem 1.4). In the second part, we construct a steady state as a constrained energy minimizer, and prove its dimension reduction to the well-known 1D periodic ground state (Theorem 1.6 and 1.7). Then, employing the dimension reduction limit, we establish the local uniqueness and the orbital stability of the 3D ring soliton (Theorem 1.8). These results justify the emergence of stable quasi-1D periodic dynamics for Bose-Einstein condensates on a ring in physics experiments.

Strichartz estimates for higher-order Schrödinger equations and their applications

In this paper, we consider the higher-order linear Schrödinger equations, that is, a formal finite Taylor expansion of the linear pseudo-relativistic equation. We establish the global-in-time Strichartz estimates for these higher-order equations which hold uniformly in the speed of light. As nonlinear applications, we show that the higher-order Hartree(-Fock) equation approximates the corresponding pseudo-relativistic equation on an arbitrarily long time interval, with higher accuracy than the non-relativistic equation. We also prove small data scattering for the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

On the continuum limit for the discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a large finite cubic lattice

In this study, we consider the nonlinear Schödinger equation (NLS) with the zero-boundary condition on a two- or three-dimensional large finite cubic lattice. We prove that its solution converges to that of the NLS on the entire Euclidean space with simultaneous reduction in the lattice distance and expansion of the domain. Moreover, we obtain a precise global-in-time bound for the rate of convergence. Our proof heavily relies on Strichartz estimates on a finite lattice. A key observation is that, compared to the case of a lattice with a fixed size [Y. Hong, C. Kwak, S. Nakamura, and C. Yang, \emph{Finite difference scheme for two-dimensional periodic nonlinear {S}chrödinger equations}, Journal of Evolution Equations \textbf{21} (2021), no.~1, 391--418.], the loss of regularity in Strichartz estimates can be reduced as the domain expands, depending on the speed of expansion. This allows us to address the physically important three-dimensional case.

Orbital stability for the mass-critical and supercritical pseudo-relativistic nonlinear Schrodinger equation

For the one-dimensional mass-critical/supercritical pseudo-relativistic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, a stationary solution can be constructed as an energy minimizer under an additional kinetic energy constraint and the set of energy minimizers is orbitally stable in \cite{BGV}. In this study, we proved the local uniqueness and established the orbital stability of the solitary wave by improving that of the energy minimizer set. A key aspect thereof is the reformulation of the variational problem in the non-relativistic regime, which we consider to be more natural because the proof extensively relies on the subcritical nature of the limiting model. Thus, the role of the additional constraint is clarified, a more suitable Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality is introduced, and the non-relativistic limit is proved. Subsequently, this limit is employed to derive the local uniqueness and orbital stability.

Semi-classical limit of quantum free energy minimizers for the gravitational Hartree equation

For the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson equation, Guo and Rein constructed a class of classical isotropic states as minimizers of free energies (or energy-Casimir functionals) under mass constraints. For the quantum counterpart, that is, the gravitational Hartree equation, isotropic states are constructed as free energy minimizers by Aki, Dolbeault and Sparber. In this paper, we are concerned with the correspondence between quantum and classical isotropic states. Precisely, we prove that as the Planck constant $\hbar$ goes to zero, free energy minimizers for the Hartree equation converge to those for the Vlasov-Poisson equation in terms of potential functions as well as via the Husimi transform and the Töplitz quantization.

Korteweg--de Vries limit for the Fermi--Pasta--Ulam system

In this paper, we develop dispersive PDE techniques for the Fermi--Pasta--Ulam (FPU) system with infinitely many oscillators, and we show that general solutions to the infinite FPU system can be approximated by counter-propagating waves governed by the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation as the lattice spacing approaches zero. Our result not only simplifies the hypotheses but also reduces the regularity requirement in the previous study [45].
