Raman Circular Dichroism Reveals Higher-Order Quantum Geometry of Magnons

We develop a gauge-invariant framework that relates two-magnon Raman circular dichroism (RCD) to higher-order magnon quantum geometry. In the magnon band basis, the Raman operator decomposes into interband Berry connections, their covariant derivatives, and products of successive connections, generating higher-order, multi-state geometric tensors beyond the conventional single-band quantum metric and Berry curvature. Applying this framework to a field-polarized Kitaev magnet, we show that higher-order geometric tensors govern the dichroic response. Our results establish RCD as a spectroscopic probe of generalized magnon quantum geometry.

Plaid-Like Spin Splitting and Chirality of Magnon Bands in Antiferromagnetic MnTe$_2$

Altermagnets constitute an emerging class of magnetic materials that combine compensated antiferromagnetic order with spin-split excitations arising from crystalline symmetries. Despite strong theoretical interest, their experimental identification remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate that helicity- and angle-resolved Raman scattering measurements reveal reduced rotational symmetries of magnons and a pronounced imbalance between left- and right-circular polarization channels, indicating momentum-dependent magnon handedness. First-principles DFT+$U$ calculations combined with linear spin-wave theory uncover a characteristic plaid-like spin-splitting structure in momentum space. The resulting magnon spin textures are dictated by the unconventional sublattice symmetries of MnTe$_2$ and closely emulate those of altermagnetic electronic bands. Our work provides evidence of chiral spin-wave excitations unique to this non-coplanar antiferromagnet.

Interplay between magnetic and lattice excitations and emergent multiple phase transitions in MnPSe3-xSx

The intricate interplay between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in two-dimensional magnetic materials plays a pivotal role in modifying their magnetic characteristics, engendering hybrid quasiparticles, and implementing functional devices. Herein, we present our comprehensive and in-depth investigations on magnetic and lattice excitations of MnPSe3-xSx (x = 0, 0.5, and 1.5) alloys, utilizing temperature- and polarization-dependent Raman scattering. Our experimental results reveal the occurrence of multiple phase transitions, evidenced by notable changes in phonon self-energy and the appearance or splitting of phonon modes. These emergent phases are tied to the development of long and short-range spin-spin correlations, as well as to spin reorientations or magnetic instabilities. Our analysis of two-magnon excitations as a function of temperature and composition showcases their hybridization with phonons whose degree weakens with increasing x. Moreover, the suppression of spin-dependent phonon intensity in chemically most-disordered MnPSe3-xSx (x = 1.5) suggests that chalcogen substitution offers a control knob of tuning spin and phonon dynamics by modulating concurrently superexchange pathways and a degree of trigonal distortions.

One-ninth magnetization plateau stabilized by spin entanglement in a kagome antiferromagnet

The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a Kagome lattice is geometrically frustrated, which is expected to promote the formation of many-body quantum entangled states. The most sought-after among these is the quantum spin liquid phase, but magnetic analogs of liquid, solid, and supersolid phases may also occur, producing fractional plateaus in the magnetization. Here, we investigate the experimental realization of these predicted phases in the Kagome material YCu3(OD)6+xBr3-x (x=0.5). By combining thermodynamic and Raman spectroscopic techniques, we provide evidence for fractionalized spinon excitations and observe the emergence of a 1/9 magnetization plateau. These observations establish YCu3(OD)6+xBr3-x as a model material for exploring the 1/9 plateau phase.

Emergent nematicity and intrinsic vs. extrinsic electronic scattering processes in the kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

Fermi surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the 2D metallic kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the cross-over into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$, with emergent $C2$ symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conjunction with symmetry-breaking lattice distortions, a kink-like hardening of the A$_{1g}$ phonon energy at $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$ signifies a concerted interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon coupling in the exotic CDW order.

Thermally populated versus field-induced triplon bound states in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$

The Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ constituting orthogonally coupled dimers harbors a $S=0$ singlet ground state. The confluence of strong interdimer interaction and frustration engenders a spectrum of low-energy excitations including localized triplons as well as singlet and triplet bound states. Their dynamics are controlled by an external magnetic field and temperature. Here, we employ high-field Raman spectroscopy to map the field and temperature evolution of such bosonic composite quasiparticles on approaching the 1/8 magnetization plateau. Our study unveils that the magnetic field and thermal fluctuations show remarkably similar effects in melting the singlet bound states, but are disparate in their effects on the fine spectral shapes. This, together with the anti-crossing of two singlet bound states in the intermediate field $B=10-16$ T, is discussed in terms of the correlated dynamics of frustrated, interacting bosons.

Magnon bound states vs. anyonic Majorana excitations in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound ($B=7-10$ T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian nature with a fractional quantum number. To discriminate between these scenarios a detailed investigation of excitations over a wide field-temperature phase diagram is essential. Here we present Raman spectroscopic data revealing low-energy quasiparticles emerging out of a continuum of fractionalized excitations at intermediate fields, which are contrasted by conventional spin-wave excitations. The temperature evolution of these quasiparticles suggests the formation of bound states out of fractionalized excitations.
