Towards Integrated Sensing and Communications for 6G: A Standardization Perspective

The radio communication division of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) has recently adopted Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) among the key usage scenarios for IMT-2030/6G. ISAC is envisioned to play a vital role in the upcoming wireless generation standards. In this work, we bring together several paramount and innovative aspects of ISAC technology from a global 6G standardization perspective, including both industrial and academic progress. Specifically, this article provides 6G requirements and ISAC-enabled vision, including various aspects of 6G standardization, benefits of ISAC co-existence, and integration challenges. Moreover, we present key enabling technologies, including intelligent metasurface-aided ISAC, as well as Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) waveform design and interference management for ISAC. Finally, future aspects are discussed to open various research opportunities and challenges on the ISAC technology towards 6G wireless communications.

Painsight: An Extendable Opinion Mining Framework for Detecting Pain Points Based on Online Customer Reviews

As the e-commerce market continues to expand and online transactions proliferate, customer reviews have emerged as a critical element in shaping the purchasing decisions of prospective buyers. Previous studies have endeavored to identify key aspects of customer reviews through the development of sentiment analysis models and topic models. However, extracting specific dissatisfaction factors remains a challenging task. In this study, we delineate the pain point detection problem and propose Painsight, an unsupervised framework for automatically extracting distinct dissatisfaction factors from customer reviews without relying on ground truth labels. Painsight employs pre-trained language models to construct sentiment analysis and topic models, leveraging attribution scores derived from model gradients to extract dissatisfaction factors. Upon application of the proposed methodology to customer review data spanning five product categories, we successfully identified and categorized dissatisfaction factors within each group, as well as isolated factors for each type. Notably, Painsight outperformed benchmark methods, achieving substantial performance enhancements and exceptional results in human evaluations.

Sparse Vector Transmission: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

In recent years, we are witnessing bewildering variety of automated services and applications of vehicles, robots, sensors, and machines powered by the artificial intelligence technologies. Communication mechanism associated with these services is dearly distinct from human-centric communications. One important feature for the machine-centric communications is that the amount of information to be transmitted is tiny. In view of the short packet transmission, relying on today's transmission mechanism would not be efficient due to the waste of resources, large decoding latency, and expensive operational cost. In this article, we present an overview of the sparse vector transmission (SVT), a scheme to transmit a short-sized information after the sparse transformation. We discuss basics of SVT, two distinct SVT strategies, viz., frequency-domain sparse transmission and sparse vector coding with detailed operations, and also demonstrate the effectiveness in realistic wireless environments.

Map-based Millimeter-Wave Channel Models: An Overview, Hybrid Modeling, Data, and Learning

Compared to the current wireless communication systems, millimeter wave (mm-Wave) promises a wide range of spectrum. As viable alternatives to existing mm-Wave channel models, various map-based channel models with different modeling methods have been widely discussed. Map-based channel models are based on a ray-tracing algorithm and include realistic channel parameters in a given map. Such parameters enable researchers to accurately evaluate novel technologies in the mm-Wave range. Diverse map-based modeling methods result in different modeling objectives, including the characteristics of channel parameters and different complexities of the modeling procedure. This article outlines an overview of map-based mm-Wave channel models and proposes a concept of how they can be utilized to integrate a hardware testbed/sounder with a software testbed/sounder. In addition, we categorize map-based channel parameters and provide guidelines for hybrid modeling. Next, we share the measurement data and the map-based channel parameters with the public. Lastly, we evaluate a machine learning-based beam selection algorithm through the shared database. We expect that the offered guidelines and the shared database will enable researchers to readily design a map-based channel model.

Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications in 5G Downlink: Physical Layer Aspects

Ultra reliable and low latency communications (URLLC) is a new service category in 5G to accommodate emerging services and applications having stringent latency and reliability requirements. In order to support URLLC, there should be both evolutionary and revolutionary changes in the air interface named 5G new radio (NR). In this article, we provide an up-to-date overview of URLLC with an emphasis on the physical layer challenges and solutions in 5G NR downlink. We highlight key requirements of URLLC and then elaborate the physical layer issues and enabling technologies including packet and frame structure, scheduling schemes, and reliability improvement techniques, which have been discussed in the 3GPP Release 15 standardization.

Overview of Full-Dimension MIMO in LTE-Advanced Pro

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a large number of basestation antennas, often called massive MIMO, have received much attention in academia and industry as a means to improve the spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, and processing complexity of next generation cellular system. Mobile communication industry has initiated a feasibility study of massive MIMO systems to meet the increasing demand of future wireless systems. Field trials of the proof-of-concept systems have demonstrated the potential gain of the Full-Dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO), an official name for the MIMO enhancement in 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP). 3GPP initiated standardization activity for the seamless integration of this technology into current 4G LTE systems. In this article, we provide an overview of the FD-MIMO system, with emphasis on the discussion and debate conducted on the standardization process of Release 13. We present key features for FD-MIMO systems, a summary of the major issues for the standardization and practical system design, and performance evaluations for typical FD-MIMO scenarios.
