Unified Evaluation Methodology for AI-Native Integrated Sensing and Communication

Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) couples radio sensing, data transmission, and control actions within a single closed-loop system. When Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven policies adapt sensing and communication online across a variety of sensing tasks and objectives, end-to-end performance is shaped not only by waveform and channel conditions but also by inference latency, uncertainty, environmental dynamics, and hardware non-idealities, leading to fundamental trade-offs between sensing accuracy, communication reliability, and resource overhead. This manuscript presents a unified system architecture and evaluation methodology for AI-native ISAC, defined as ISAC in which learning-based agents adapt sensing, communication, and actuation policies online under uncertainty. We formalize the design space of closed-loop ISAC, propose a three-stage validation pipeline from bounds and feasibility analysis, through high-fidelity digital-twin simulation, to preliminary over-the-air validation, and provide a minimal reporting checklist that links technical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) (e.g., data rate, SINR, target detection, parameter estimation, track quality, localization error, outage, latency, overhead, and energy per decision) to application-level Key Value Indicators (KVIs) (e.g., availability and mission effectiveness). Two representative instantiations, specifically Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based outdoor and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-enabled indoor coverage extensions, are used to illustrate how to structure reproducible baselines and comparable evidence across heterogeneous deployments, helping bridge the gap between theoretical ISAC gains and deployment-ready performance claims.

An Experimental Assessment of the Spatial and Frequency Selectivity of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

This work investigates the impact of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) on radio links other than the one for which the RIS configuration is optimized. We consider three different scenarios in which a secondary communication link could be affected by a RIS whose configuration is optimized for a primary communication link operating in the vicinity, on the same or on different frequencies. This question is investigated experimentally in the FR1 band, using the CorteXlab radio testbed and a Greenerwave RIS. We show that the impact, in terms of received power and impact on the channel phase of the secondary link, is significant even outside of the nominal frequency range of the RIS, and is not mitigated by carrier frequency separation between the two communication links.

Model-free Optimization and Experimental Validation of RIS-assisted Wireless Communications under Rich Multipath Fading

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) devices have emerged as an effective way to control the propagation channels for enhancing the end-users' performance. However, RIS optimization involves configuring the radio frequency response of a large number of radiating elements, which is challenging in real-world applications due to high computational complexity. In this paper, a model-free cross-entropy (CE) algorithm is proposed to optimize the binary RIS configuration for improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver. One key advantage of the proposed method is that it only requires system performance indicators, e.g., the received SNR, without the need for channel models or channel state information. Both simulations and experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed CE algorithm. This study provides an experimental demonstration of the channel hardening effect in a multi-antenna RIS-assisted wireless system under rich multipath fading.

A Survey of Limitations and Enhancements of the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power and Lossy Networks: A Focus on Core Operations

Driven by the special requirements of the Lowpower and Lossy Networks (LLNs), the IPv6 Routing Protocol for LLNs (RPL) was standardized by the IETF some six years ago to tackle the routing issue in such networks. Since its introduction, however, numerous studies have pointed out that, in its current form, RPL suffers from issues that limit its efficiency and domain of applicability. Thus, several solutions have been proposed in the literature in an attempt to overcome these identified limitations. In this survey, we aim mainly to provide a comprehensive review of these research proposals assessing whether such proposals have succeeded in overcoming the standard reported limitations related to its core operations. Although some of RPL weaknesses have been addressed successfully, the study found that the proposed solutions remain deficient in overcoming several others. Hence, the study investigates where such proposals still fall short, the challenges and pitfalls to avoid, thus would help researchers formulate a clear foundation for the development of further successful extensions in future allowing the protocol to be applied more widely.

Closed Form Expressions for the Probability Density Function of the Interference Power in PPP Networks

In this paper, we provide closed form expressions for the probability density functions (PDF) of the interference power in a network whose transmitters are arranged according to the Poisson Point Process (PPP). These expressions apply for any integer path loss exponent ηgreater than 2. Using the stretched exponential or Kohlrausch function, we show that the PDF formulas can be obtained as long as the Laplace transform (LT) for the PDF follows a specific common (exponential) formulation. Moreover, we show that such closed form expressions can be useful in deriving performance metrics for the network for any fading type experienced by the signals. Finally, using Monte-Carlo simulations and numerical analysis, we validate the accuracy of the proposed analytical derivations.

Enhanced Mobile Digital Video Broadcasting with Distributed Space-Time Coding

This paper investigates the distributed space-time (ST) coding proposals for the future Digital Video Broadcasting--Next Generation Handheld (DVB-NGH) standard. We first theoretically show that the distributed MIMO scheme is the best broadcasting scenario in terms of channel capacity. Consequently we evaluate the performance of several ST coding proposals for DVB-NGH with practical system specifications and channel conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the 3D code is the best ST coding solution for broadcasting in the distributed MIMO scenario.

Algebraic Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Space-Time Codes for Digital Broadcasting in SFN

Lately, different methods for broadcasting future digital TV in a single frequency network (SFN) have been under an intensive study. To improve the transmission to also cover suburban and rural areas, a hybrid scheme may be used. In hybrid transmission, the signal is transmitted both from a satellite and from a terrestrial site. In 2008, Y. Nasser et al. proposed to use a double layer 3D space-time (ST) code in the hybrid 4 x 2 MIMO transmission of digital TV. In this paper, alternative codes with simpler structure are proposed for the 4 x 2 hybrid system, and new codes are constructed for the 3 x 2 system. The performance of the proposed codes is analyzed through computer simulations, showing a significant improvement over simple repetition schemes. The proposed codes prove in addition to be very robust in the presence of power imbalance between the two sites.

Adaptive resource allocation at the cell border using cooperative technique

The technique of cooperative communication has recently gained momentum in the research community; this technique utilizes the notion of relay, as an intermediate node between the source and the destination, to enhance the overall system performance. In this paper we ex-plored the benefits of adaptive cooperation, in which the relay adapts its relaying process in response to channel conditions and data priorities. We are particularly interested in applying this concept to the cell border situation, in which two mobile nodes acting as destinations com-municate with base stations (sources) through a relay. The adaptive cooperation is proposed here since the transmission channel conditions (Packet Error Rate for example) and data priori-ties are not the same for both mobiles. We show that using the adaptive resource allocation technique in combination with the cross layer design techniques, we can achieve Real-Time data constraints with no additional overhead.

Positioning based information technique in cooperative MIMO-OFDM systems

Future Communication networks are tending towards a diverse wireless networking world where the positioning information (PI) could be helpful in different techniques like the dynamic resource allocation. On the other hand, the PI could be widely used for cooperative techniques in the relay and/or routing selection process. In this paper, we propose to use the PI in the selection of the relays and then to apply an efficient double layer distributed space time block code (DLSTBC) scheme between the different relays. Using the amplify and forward (AF) technique, we show that the proposed code is very efficient whatever the transmitted power is. Moreover, we show that the relay selection process based on PI yields very powerful results when compared to the random relay selection (RS) process

The code is based on a double layer structure for inter-cell and intra-cell transmission mode in single frequency networks. Without increasing the complexity of the receiver, the proposed code is very efficient for different transmission scenarios.

A novel channel estimation based on spread pilots for terrestrial digital video broadcasting

In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation technique based on spread pilots for digital video broadcasting. This technique consists in adding a linear preceding function before the OFDM modulation and dedicating one of the preceding sequence to transmit the pilot symbols for the channel estimation. The merits of this technique are its simplicity, its flexibility, and the gains in terms of spectral efficiency and useful bit rate obtained compared to the classical pilot based estimation schemes used in DVB standards. The performance evaluated over realistic channel models, shows the efficiency of this technique which turns out to be a promising channel estimation technique for the future terrestrial video broadcasting systems.

2D Linear Precoded OFDM for future mobile Digital Video Broadcasting

In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation technique based on 2D spread pilots. The merits of this technique are its simplicity, its flexibility regarding the transmission scenarios, and the spectral efficiency gain obtained compared to the classical pilot based estimation schemes used in DVB standards. We derive the analytical expression of the mean square error of the estimator and show it is a function of the autocorrelation of the channel in both time and frequency domains. The performance evaluated over a realistic channel model shows the efficiency of this technique which turns out to be a promising channel estimation for the future mobile video broadcasting systems.

On the Influence of Carrier Frequency Offset and Sampling Frequency Offset in MIMO-OFDM Systems for Future Digital TV

This paper investigates the impact of carrier frequency offset (CFO) and sampling frequency offset (SFO) on the performance of different MIMO-OFDM schemes with high spectral efficiency for next generation of terrestrial digital TV. We analyze particularly orthogonal Alamouti scheme, and non-orthogonal (NO) schemes like VBLAST, linear dispersion (LD) code and Golden code. This analysis gives a global view on the best suitable MIMO-OFDM scheme with respect to CFO and SFO. We show that for high spectral efficiency, Alamouti is more sensitive to CFO and SFO. Moreover, we show that all studied MIMO-OFDM schemes are sensitive to CFO when it is greater than 1% of inter-carrier spacing. Their sensitivity due to SFO is less than that due to CFO.

Efficient MIMO-OFDM Schemes for Future Terrestrial Digital TV with Unequal Received Powers

This article investigates the effect of equal and unequal received powers on the performances of different MIMO-OFDM schemes for terrestrial digital TV. More precisely, we focus on three types of non-orthogonal schemes: the BLAST scheme, the Linear Dispersion (LD) code and the Golden code, and we compare their performances to that of Alamouti scheme. Using two receiving antennas, we show that for moderate attenuation on the second antenna and high spectral efficiency, Golden code outperforms other schemes. However, Alamouti scheme presents the best performance for low spectral efficiency and equal received powers or when one antenna is dramatically damaged. When three antennas are used, we show that Golden code offers the highest robustness to power unbalance at the receiving side

Efficient 3D Space Time Space Block Code for Future Terrestrial Digital TV

This article introduces a 3D space-time-space block code for future terrestrial digital TV in single frequency networks. The proposed 3D code is based on a double layer structure designed for inter-cell and intra-cell space time coded transmissions. We show that this new structure is particularly efficient for SFN environments regardless of the location of the receiver. It is then suitable for fixed, portable and mobile receptions.

Bit Error Rate Prediction of Coded MIMO-OFDM Systems

Bit error rate (BER) prediction over channel realisations has emerged as an active research area. In this paper, we give analytical signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) evaluation of MIMO-OFDM systems using an iterative receiver. Using this analytical SINR expression, we propose an accurate BER prediction method based on effective exponential SINR mapping (EESM) method. We show by simulations that our method is independent of the channel realisation and of the MIMO scheme. It is only dependent on the modulation and coding scheme.

We show that all studied MIMO-OFDM schemes are sensitive to CFO when it is greater than 1% of inter-carrier spacing. We show also that the Alamouti scheme is the most sensitive MIMO scheme to CFO
