High-Dimensional Robust Mean Estimation in Nearly-Linear Time

We study the fundamental problem of high-dimensional mean estimation in a robust model where a constant fraction of the samples are adversarially corrupted. Recent work gave the first polynomial time algorithms for this problem with dimension-independent error guarantees for several families of structured distributions. In this work, we give the first nearly-linear time algorithms for high-dimensional robust mean estimation. Specifically, we focus on distributions with (i) known covariance and sub-gaussian tails, and (ii) unknown bounded covariance. Given $N$ samples on $\mathbb{R}^d$, an $ε$-fraction of which may be arbitrarily corrupted, our algorithms run in time $\tilde{O}(Nd) / \mathrm{poly}(ε)$ and approximate the true mean within the information-theoretically optimal error, up to constant factors. Previous robust algorithms with comparable error guarantees have running times $\tildeΩ(N d^2)$, for $ε= Ω(1)$. Our algorithms rely on a natural family of SDPs parameterized by our current guess $ν$ for the unknown mean $μ^\star$. We give a win-win analysis establishing the following: either a near-optimal solution to the primal SDP yields a good candidate for $μ^\star$ -- independent of our current guess $ν$ -- or the dual SDP yields a new guess $ν'$ whose distance from $μ^\star$ is smaller by a constant factor. We exploit the special structure of the corresponding SDPs to show that they are approximately solvable in nearly-linear time. Our approach is quite general, and we believe it can also be applied to obtain nearly-linear time algorithms for other high-dimensional robust learning problems.

On the Power-law Scaling of Turbulence Cospectra Part 1: Stably Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Turbulent fluxes in the atmospheric surface layer are key input for the prediction of weather, hydrology, and carbon dioxide concentration. In numerical modelling of turbulent fluxes, a -7/3 power-law scaling in turbulence cospectra is usually assumed at high wavenumbers. In eddy-covariance (EC) measurements of turbulent fluxes, an assumed shape of turbulence cospectra is typically required for high-frequency spectral corrections, typically assuming a -7/3 power law. The derivation of -7/3 power-law scaling is based primarily on dimensional analysis, and other cospectral scaling has also been observed. Here we examine the shape of turbulence cospectra at high wavenumbers from extensive field measurements of wind velocity, temperature, water vapour and CO2 concentrations in various stably stratified atmospheric conditions. We propose a turbulence cospectral shape with -2 power law rather than -7/3 law for high wavenumber equilibrium range of the stable atmospheric boundary layer. This finding contributes to improved estimation of turbulent fluxes in both modelling and observation.

Robust Learning of Fixed-Structure Bayesian Networks

We investigate the problem of learning Bayesian networks in a robust model where an $ε$-fraction of the samples are adversarially corrupted. In this work, we study the fully observable discrete case where the structure of the network is given. Even in this basic setting, previous learning algorithms either run in exponential time or lose dimension-dependent factors in their error guarantees. We provide the first computationally efficient robust learning algorithm for this problem with dimension-independent error guarantees. Our algorithm has near-optimal sample complexity, runs in polynomial time, and achieves error that scales nearly-linearly with the fraction of adversarially corrupted samples. Finally, we show on both synthetic and semi-synthetic data that our algorithm performs well in practice.

Turbulence Spectra in the Stable Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Stratification can cause turbulence spectra to deviate from Kolmogorov's isotropic -5/3 power-law scaling in the universal equilibrium range at high Reynolds numbers. However, a consensus has not been reached with regard to the exact shape of the spectra. Here we propose a theoretically-derived shape of the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and temperature spectra in horizontal wavenumber that consists of three regimes at small Froude number: the buoyancy subrange, a transition region and isotropic inertial subrange through derivation based on previous research. These regimes are confirmed by various observations in the atmospheric boundary layer. We also show that DNS may not apply in the study of very stable atmospheric boundary layers at very high Reynolds numbers as they cannot correctly represent the observed spectral regimes because of the lack of scale separation limited by current computational capacity. In addition, the spectrum in the transition regime explains why Monin-Obukhov similarity theory cannot entirely describe the behavior of the stable atmospheric boundary.

Throughput Analysis and Energy Efficiency Optimization for Standalone LTE-U Networks with Randomly Delayed CSI

To coexist with Wi-Fi friendly, a standalone long-term evolution network over unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) under listen-before-talk (LBT) mechanism can only access channel in a random and intermittent way, which results in random and time-variant delay in both data and signaling transmissions. In this work, we explore the impact of randomly delayed channel state information (CSI) on the performance of a standalone LTE-U network by analyzing its downlink throughput and users' energy efficiency (EE) under different CSI feedback schemes and frequency-domain schedulers. Further, aiming at maximizing users' EE of a standalone LTE-U network while guaranteeing fair coexistence with Wi-Fi, joint optimization on the medium access control (MAC) protocol and CSI feedback scheme is studied. Due to the non-convex and non-concave characteristic of the formulated optimization problems, decomposition-based low-complexity yet efficient algorithms are proposed. Simulation results not only verify the analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms but also show diverse impacts of CSI feedback scheme, frequency-domain scheduler, and traffic load of Wi-Fi on the standalone LTE-U network performance.

A Simple Mechanism for a Budget-Constrained Buyer

We study a classic Bayesian mechanism design setting of monopoly problem for an additive buyer in the presence of budgets. In this setting a monopolist seller with $m$ heterogeneous items faces a single buyer and seeks to maximize her revenue. The buyer has a budget and additive valuations drawn independently for each item from (non-identical) distributions. We show that when the buyer's budget is publicly known, the better of selling each item separately and selling the grand bundle extracts a constant fraction of the optimal revenue. When the budget is private, we consider a standard Bayesian setting where buyer's budget $b$ is drawn from a known distribution $B$. We show that if $b$ is independent of the valuations and distribution $B$ satisfies monotone hazard rate condition, then selling items separately or in a grand bundle is still approximately optimal. We give a complementary example showing that no constant approximation simple mechanism is possible if budget $b$ can be interdependent with valuations.

Look Across Elapse: Disentangled Representation Learning and Photorealistic Cross-Age Face Synthesis for Age-Invariant Face Recognition

Despite the remarkable progress in face recognition related technologies, reliably recognizing faces across ages still remains a big challenge. The appearance of a human face changes substantially over time, resulting in significant intra-class variations. As opposed to current techniques for age-invariant face recognition, which either directly extract age-invariant features for recognition, or first synthesize a face that matches target age before feature extraction, we argue that it is more desirable to perform both tasks jointly so that they can leverage each other. To this end, we propose a deep Age-Invariant Model (AIM) for face recognition in the wild with three distinct novelties. First, AIM presents a novel unified deep architecture jointly performing cross-age face synthesis and recognition in a mutual boosting way. Second, AIM achieves continuous face rejuvenation/aging with remarkable photorealistic and identity-preserving properties, avoiding the requirement of paired data and the true age of testing samples. Third, we develop effective and novel training strategies for end-to-end learning the whole deep architecture, which generates powerful age-invariant face representations explicitly disentangled from the age variation. Moreover, we propose a new large-scale Cross-Age Face Recognition (CAFR) benchmark dataset to facilitate existing efforts and push the frontiers of age-invariant face recognition research. Extensive experiments on both our CAFR and several other cross-age datasets (MORPH, CACD and FG-NET) demonstrate the superiority of the proposed AIM model over the state-of-the-arts. Benchmarking our model on one of the most popular unconstrained face recognition datasets IJB-C additionally verifies the promising generalizability of AIM in recognizing faces in the wild.

Non-Convex Matrix Completion Against a Semi-Random Adversary

Matrix completion is a well-studied problem with many machine learning applications. In practice, the problem is often solved by non-convex optimization algorithms. However, the current theoretical analysis for non-convex algorithms relies heavily on the assumption that every entry is observed with exactly the same probability $p$, which is not realistic in practice. In this paper, we investigate a more realistic semi-random model, where the probability of observing each entry is at least $p$. Even with this mild semi-random perturbation, we can construct counter-examples where existing non-convex algorithms get stuck in bad local optima. In light of the negative results, we propose a pre-processing step that tries to re-weight the semi-random input, so that it becomes "similar" to a random input. We give a nearly-linear time algorithm for this problem, and show that after our pre-processing, all the local minima of the non-convex objective can be used to approximately recover the underlying ground-truth matrix.

Spatial-Temporal Synergic Residual Learning for Video Person Re-Identification

We tackle the problem of person re-identification in video setting in this paper, which has been viewed as a crucial task in many applications. Meanwhile, it is very challenging since the task requires learning effective representations from video sequences with heterogeneous spatial-temporal information. We present a novel method - Spatial-Temporal Synergic Residual Network (STSRN) for this problem. STSRN contains a spatial residual extractor, a temporal residual processor and a spatial-temporal smooth module. The smoother can alleviate sample noises along the spatial-temporal dimensions thus enable STSRN extracts more robust spatial-temporal features of consecutive frames. Extensive experiments are conducted on several challenging datasets including iLIDS-VID, PRID2011 and MARS. The results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves consistently superior performance over most of state-of-the-art methods.

Understanding Humans in Crowded Scenes: Deep Nested Adversarial Learning and A New Benchmark for Multi-Human Parsing

Despite the noticeable progress in perceptual tasks like detection, instance segmentation and human parsing, computers still perform unsatisfactorily on visually understanding humans in crowded scenes, such as group behavior analysis, person re-identification and autonomous driving, etc. To this end, models need to comprehensively perceive the semantic information and the differences between instances in a multi-human image, which is recently defined as the multi-human parsing task. In this paper, we present a new large-scale database "Multi-Human Parsing (MHP)" for algorithm development and evaluation, and advances the state-of-the-art in understanding humans in crowded scenes. MHP contains 25,403 elaborately annotated images with 58 fine-grained semantic category labels, involving 2-26 persons per image and captured in real-world scenes from various viewpoints, poses, occlusion, interactions and background. We further propose a novel deep Nested Adversarial Network (NAN) model for multi-human parsing. NAN consists of three Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-like sub-nets, respectively performing semantic saliency prediction, instance-agnostic parsing and instance-aware clustering. These sub-nets form a nested structure and are carefully designed to learn jointly in an end-to-end way. NAN consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art solutions on our MHP and several other datasets, and serves as a strong baseline to drive the future research for multi-human parsing.

The Core Mass Function Across Galactic Environments. II. Infrared Dark Cloud Clumps

We study the core mass function (CMF) within 32 dense clumps in seven infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) via 1.3~mm continuum emission at a resolution of $\sim$1". We have identified 107 cores with the dendrogram algorithm, with a median radius of about 0.02 pc. Their masses range from 0.261 to 178 $M_{\odot}$. After applying completeness corrections, we fit the combined IRDC CMF with a power law of the form $d N / d\:{\rm log} M \propto M^{-α}$ and derive an index of $α\simeq0.86\pm0.11$ for $M \geq 0.79\:M_\odot$ and $α\simeq0.70\pm0.13$ for $M\geq 1.26\:M_\odot$, which is a significantly more top-heavy distribution than the Salpeter stellar initial mass function (IMF) index of 1.35. We also make a direct comparison of these IRDC clump CMF results to those measured in the more evolved protocluster G286 derived with similar methods, which have $α\simeq1.29\pm0.19$ and $1.08\pm0.27$ in these mass ranges, respectively. These results provide a hint that, especially for the $M\geq 1.26\:M_\odot$ range where completeness corrections are modest, the CMF in high pressure, early-stage environments of IRDC clumps may be top-heavy compared to that in the more evolved, global environment of the G286 protoclusters. However, larger samples of cores probing these different environments are needed to better establish the robustness of this potential CMF variation.

A Stochastic Geometry Analysis of Energy Harvesting in Large Scale Wireless Networks

In this paper, the theoretical sustainable capacity of wireless networks with radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting is analytically studied. Specifically, we consider a large scale wireless network where base stations (BSs) and low power wireless devices are deployed by homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) with different spatial densities. Wireless devices exploit the downlink transmissions from the BSs for either information delivery or energy harvesting. Generally, a BS schedules downlink transmission to wireless devices. The scheduled device receives the data information while other devices harvest energy from the downlink signals. The data information can be successfully received by the scheduled device only if the device has sufficient energy for data processing, i.e., the harvested energy is larger than a threshold. Given the densities of BSs and users, we apply stochastic geometry to analyze the expected number of users per cell and the successful information delivery probability of a wireless device, based on which the total network throughput can be derived. It is shown that the maximum network throughput per cell can be achieved under the optimal density of BSs. Extensive simulations validate the analysis.

Diverse Few-Shot Text Classification with Multiple Metrics

We study few-shot learning in natural language domains. Compared to many existing works that apply either metric-based or optimization-based meta-learning to image domain with low inter-task variance, we consider a more realistic setting, where tasks are diverse. However, it imposes tremendous difficulties to existing state-of-the-art metric-based algorithms since a single metric is insufficient to capture complex task variations in natural language domain. To alleviate the problem, we propose an adaptive metric learning approach that automatically determines the best weighted combination from a set of metrics obtained from meta-training tasks for a newly seen few-shot task. Extensive quantitative evaluations on real-world sentiment analysis and dialog intent classification datasets demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against state-of-the-art few shot learning algorithms in terms of predictive accuracy. We make our code and data available for further study.

Beamforming Design for Max-Min Fair SWIPT in Green Cloud-RAN with Wireless Fronthaul

In this paper, a joint beamforming design for max-min fair simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is investigated in a green cloud radio access network (Cloud-RAN) with millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless fronthaul. To achieve a balanced user experience for separately located data receivers (DRs) and energy receivers (ERs) in the network, joint transmit beamforming vectors are optimized to maximize the minimum data rate among all the DRs, while satisfying each ER with sufficient RF energy at the same time. Then, a two-step iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the original non-convex optimization problem with the fronthaul capacity constraint in an $l_0$-norm form. Specifically, the $l_0$-norm constraint can be approximated by the reweighted $l_1$-norm, from which the optimal max-min data rate and the corresponding joint beamforming vector can be derived via semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and bi-section search. Finally, extensive numerical simulations are performed to verify the superiority of the proposed joint beamforming design to other separate beamforming strategies.

Pedestrian-Synthesis-GAN: Generating Pedestrian Data in Real Scene and Beyond

State-of-the-art pedestrian detection models have achieved great success in many benchmarks. However, these models require lots of annotation information and the labeling process usually takes much time and efforts. In this paper, we propose a method to generate labeled pedestrian data and adapt them to support the training of pedestrian detectors. The proposed framework is built on the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) with multiple discriminators, trying to synthesize realistic pedestrians and learn the background context simultaneously. To handle the pedestrians of different sizes, we adopt the Spatial Pyramid Pooling (SPP) layer in the discriminator. We conduct experiments on two benchmarks. The results show that our framework can smoothly synthesize pedestrians on background images of variations and different levels of details. To quantitatively evaluate our approach, we add the generated samples into training data of the baseline pedestrian detectors and show the synthetic images are able to improve the detectors' performance.

A Hybrid Approach for Efficient Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Green C-RAN

In this paper, we consider a green cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with simultaneous wireless and power transfer ability. In order to reduce the energy consumed for updating the chanel state information (CSI), energy users are divided into two different groups, including the free charge group and the MIMO group. Then a semi-definite programming problem is formulated under the constraints of energy and information transmission requirements. To minimize the total energy consumption, two algorithms are developed to authorize the energy users into two group divisions in single time slot. Then the algorithms are extended to long term scenarios consisting training and long term stages, the CSI of free charge energy users are not required during the long term stage. Simulation and numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms in significantly reducing the energy consumption of C-RAN systems.

A Deterministic Protocol for Sequential Asymptotic Learning

In the classic herding model, agents receive private signals about an underlying binary state of nature, and act sequentially to choose one of two possible actions, after observing the actions of their predecessors. We investigate what types of behaviors lead to asymptotic learning, where agents will eventually converge to the right action in probability. It is known that for rational agents and bounded signals, there will not be asymptotic learning. Does it help if the agents can be cooperative rather than act selfishly? This is simple to achieve if the agents are allowed to use randomized protocols. In this paper, we provide the first deterministic protocol under which asymptotic learning occurs. In addition, our protocol has the advantage of being much simpler than previous protocols.

The Core Mass Function in the Massive Protocluster G286.21+0.17 revealed by ALMA

We study the core mass function (CMF) of the massive protocluster G286.21+0.17 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array via 1.3~mm continuum emission at a resolution of 1.0\arcsec\ (2500~au). We have mapped a field of 5.3\arcmin$\times$5.3\arcmin\ centered on the protocluster clump. We measure the CMF in the central region, exploring various core detection algorithms, which give source numbers ranging from 60 to 125, depending on parameter selection. We estimate completeness corrections due to imperfect flux recovery and core identification via artificial core insertion experiments. For masses $M\gtrsim1\:M_\odot$, the fiducial dendrogram-identified CMF can be fit with a power law of the form ${\rm{d}}N/{\rm{d}}{\rm{log}}M\propto{M}^{-α}$ with $α\simeq1.24\pm0.17$, slightly shallower than, but still consistent with, the index of the Salpeter stellar initial mass function of 1.35. Clumpfind-identified CMFs are significantly shallower with $α\simeq0.64\pm0.13$. While raw CMFs show a peak near $1\:M_\odot$, completeness-corrected CMFs are consistent with a single power law extending down to $\sim 0.5\:M_\odot$, with only a tentative indication of a shallowing of the slope around $\sim1\:M_\odot$. We discuss the implications of these results for star and star cluster formation theories.
