Propagation and excitation properties of nonlinear surface plasmon polaritons in a rectangular barrier

We propose a scheme to study the nonlinear propagation properties of nonlinear surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a three level $Λ$ type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system with modulation of a rectangular barrier. Based on the multi scale method, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) describing nonlinear propagation of SPPs is derived, and the rectangular barrier affecting propagation of nonlinear SPPs is provided by an off-resonance Stark field. For the single nonlinear SPPs incident case, by adjusting the height and half width of the barrier, we can realize transmission, trapping and reflection of the nonlinear SPPs. For two nonlinear SPPs symmetrical incident case, we find that a periodic intensity distribution in transverse direction mode can be excited in the rectangular barrier, and we study the relationship between propagation properties of such excited modes in the barrier with nonlinearity, half width of the barrier and phase difference of the initial nonlinear SPPs. In addition, we design an optical switch of nonlinear SPPs based on the above results. The results obtained here not only provide a theoretical basis for the study of the interaction between nonlinear SPPs and external potentials, but also have broad application prospects in the field of optical information at micro/nano scale.

Breakdown of Ergodicity and Self-Averaging in Polar Flocks with Quenched Disorder

We show that spatial quenched disorder affects polar active matter in ways more complex and far-reaching than believed heretofore. Using simulations of the 2D Vicsek model subjected to random couplings or a disordered scattering field, we find in particular that ergodicity is lost in the ordered phase, the nature of which we show to depend qualitatively on the type of quenched disorder: for random couplings, it remains long-range ordered, but qualitatively different from the pure (disorderless) case. For random scatterers, polar order varies with system size but we find strong non-self-averaging, with sample-to-sample fluctuations dominating asymptotically, which prevents us from elucidating the asymptotic status of order.

V2I-Based Platooning Design with Delay Awareness

This paper studies the vehicle platooning system based on vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, where all the vehicles in the platoon upload their driving state information to the roadside unit (RSU), and RSU makes the platoon control decisions with the assistance of edge computing. By addressing the delay concern, a platoon control approach is proposed to achieve plant stability and string stability. The effects of the time headway, communication and edge computing delays on the stability are quantified. The velocity and size of the stable platoon are calculated, which show the impacts of the radio parameters such as massive MIMO antennas and frequency band on the platoon configuration. The handover performance between RSUs in the V2I-based platooning system is quantified by considering the effects of the RSU's coverage and platoon size, which demonstrates that the velocity of a stable platoon should be appropriately chosen, in order to meet the V2I's Quality-of-Service and handover constraints.

Fixed Inducing Points Online Bayesian Calibration for Computer Models with an Application to a Scale-Resolving CFD Simulation

This paper proposes a novel fixed inducing points online Bayesian calibration (FIPO-BC) algorithm to efficiently learn the model parameters using a benchmark database. The standard Bayesian calibration (STD-BC) algorithm provides a statistical method to calibrate the parameters of computationally expensive models. However, the STD-BC algorithm scales very badly with the number of data points and lacks online learning capability. The proposed FIPO-BC algorithm greatly improves the computational efficiency and enables the online calibration by executing the calibration on a set of predefined inducing points. To demonstrate the procedure of the FIPO-BC algorithm, two tests are performed, finding the optimal value and exploring the posterior distribution of 1) the parameter in a simple function, and 2) the high-wave number damping factor in a scale-resolving turbulence model (SAS-SST). The results (such as the calibrated model parameter and its posterior distribution) of FIPO-BC with different inducing points are compared to those of STD-BC. It is found that FIPO-BC and STD-BC can provide very similar results, once the predefined set of inducing point in FIPO-BC is sufficiently fine. But, the FIPO-BC algorithm is at least ten times faster than the STD-BC algorithm. Meanwhile, the online feature of the FIPO-BC allows continuous updating of the calibration outputs and potentially reduces the workload on generating the database.

Kondo scenario of the γ-α phase transition in single crystalline Cerium thin films

The physical mechanism driving the $γ$-$α$ phase transition of face-centre-cubic (fcc) cerium (Ce) remains controversial until now. In this work, high quality single crystalline fcc-Ce thin films were grown on Graphene/6$H$-SiC(0001) substrate, and explored by XRD and ARPES measurement. XRD spectra showed a clear $γ$-$α$ phase transition at $T_{γ-α}\approx$ 50 K, which is retarded by strain effect from substrate comparing with $T_{γ-α}$ (about 140 K) of the bulk Ce metal. However, APRES spectra did not show any signature of $α$-phase emerging in the surface-layer from 300 K to 17 K, which implied that $α$-phase might form at the bulk-layer of our Ce thin films. Besides, an evident Kondo dip near Fermi energy was observed in the APRES spectrum at 80 K, indicting the formation of Kondo singlet states in $γ$-Ce. Furthermore, the DFT+DMFT calculations were performed to simulate the electronic structures and the theoretical spectral functions agreed well with the experimental ARPES spectra. In $γ$-Ce, the behavior of the self-energy's imaginary part at low frequency not only confirmed that the Kondo singlet states emerged at $T_{\rm KS} \geq 80$ K, but also implied that they became coherent states at a lower characteristic temperature ($T_{\rm coh}\sim 40$ K) due to the indirect RKKY interaction among $f$-$f$ electrons. Besides, $T_{\rm coh}$ from the theoretical simulation was close to $T_{γ-α}$ from the XRD spectra. These issues suggested that the Kondo scenario might play an important role in the $γ$-$α$ phase transition of cerium thin films.

Pre-train and Plug-in: Flexible Conditional Text Generation with Variational Auto-Encoders

Conditional Text Generation has drawn much attention as a topic of Natural Language Generation (NLG) which provides the possibility for humans to control the properties of generated contents. Current conditional generation models cannot handle emerging conditions due to their joint end-to-end learning fashion. When a new condition added, these techniques require full retraining. In this paper, we present a new framework named Pre-train and Plug-in Variational Auto-Encoder (PPVAE) towards flexible conditional text generation. PPVAE decouples the text generation module from the condition representation module to allow "one-to-many" conditional generation. When a fresh condition emerges, only a lightweight network needs to be trained and works as a plug-in for PPVAE, which is efficient and desirable for real-world applications. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of PPVAE against the existing alternatives with better conditionality and diversity but less training effort.
