When quantum channel preserves product states

Product states are always considered as the states that don't contain quantum correlation. We discuss here when a quantum channel sends the product states to themselves. The exact forms of such channels are proposed. It is shown that such a quantum channel is a local quantum channel, a composition of a local quantum channel and a flip operation, or such that one of the local states is fixed. Both finite- and infinite-dimensional systems are considered.

Singular evanescent wave resonances

Resonators fold the path of light by reflections leading to a phase balance and thus constructive addition of propagating waves. However, amplitude decrease of these waves due to incomplete reflection or material absorption leads to a finite quality factor of all resonances. Here we report on our discovery that evanescent waves can lead to a perfect phase and amplitude balance causing an ideal Fabry-Perot resonance condition in spite of material absorption and non-ideal reflectivities. This counterintuitive resonance occurs if and only if the metallic Fabry-Perot plates are in relative motion to each other separated by a critical distance. We show that the energy needed to approach the resonance arises from the conversion of the mechanical energy of motion to electromagnetic energy. The phenomenon is similar to lasing where the losses in the cavity resonance are exactly compensated by optical gain media instead of mechanical motion. Nonlinearities and non-localities in material response will inevitably curtail any singularities however we show the giant enhancement in non-equilibrium phenomena due to such resonances in moving media.

Quantum correlation exists in any non-product state

Simultaneous existence of correlation in complementary bases is a fundamental feature of quantum correlation, and we show that this characteristic is present in any non-product bipartite state. We propose a measure via mutually unbiased bases to study this feature of quantum correlation, and compare it with other measures of quantum correlation for several families of bipartite states.

Fluctuational electrodynamics of hyperbolic metamaterials

We give a detailed account of equilibrium and non-equilibrium fluctuational electrodynamics of hyperbolic metamaterials. We show the unifying aspects of two different approaches; one utilizes the second kind of fluctuation dissipation theorem and the other makes use of the scattering method. We analyze the near-field of hyperbolic media at finite temperatures and show that the lack of spatial coherence can be attributed to the multi-modal nature of super-Planckian thermal emission. We also adopt the analysis to phonon-polaritonic super-lattice metamaterials and describe the regimes suitable for experimental verification of our predicted effects. The results reveal that far-field thermal emission spectra are dominated by epsilon-near-zero and epsilon-near-pole responses as expected from Kirchoff's laws. Our work should aid both theorists and experimentalists to study complex media and engineer equilibrium and non-equilibrium fluctuations for applications in thermal photonics.

Enabling Automatic Certification of Online Auctions

We consider the problem of building up trust in a network of online auctions by software agents. This requires agents to have a deeper understanding of auction mechanisms and be able to verify desirable properties of a given mechanism. We have shown how these mechanisms can be formalised as semantic web services in OWL-S, a good enough expressive machine-readable formalism enabling software agents, to discover, invoke, and execute a web service. We have also used abstract interpretation to translate the auction's specifications from OWL-S, based on description logic, to COQ, based on typed lambda calculus, in order to enable automatic verification of desirable properties of the auction by the software agents. For this language translation, we have discussed the syntactic transformation as well as the semantics connections between both concrete and abstract domains. This work contributes to the implementation of the vision of agent-mediated e-commerce systems.

Non-Markovian dynamics in a spin star system: The failure of thermalization

In most cases, a small system weakly interacting with a thermal bath will finally reach the thermal state with the temperature of the bath. We show that this intuitive picture is not always true by a spin star model where non-Markov effect predominates in the whole dynamical process. The spin star system consists a central spin homogeneously interacting with an ensemble of identical noninteracting spins. We find that the correlation time of the bath is infinite, which implies that the bath has a perfect memory, and that the dynamical evolution of the central spin must be non- Markovian. A direct consequence is that the final state of the central spin is not the thermal state equilibrium with the bath, but a steady state which depends on its initial state.

The CHSH-type inequalities for infinite-dimensional quantum systems

By establishing CHSH operators and CHSH-type inequalities, we show that any entangled pure state in infinite-dimensional systems is entangled in a $2\otimes2$ subspace. We find that, for infinite-dimensional systems, the corresponding properties are similar to that of the two-qubit case: (i) The CHSH-type inequalities provide a sufficient and necessary condition for separability of pure states; (ii) The CHSH operators satisfy the Cirel'son inequalities; (iii) Any state which violates one of these Bell inequalities is distillable.

Constructing positive maps from block matrices

Positive maps are useful for detecting entanglement in quantum information theory. Any entangled state can be detected by some positive map. In this paper, the relation between positive block matrices and completely positive trace-preserving maps is characterized. Consequently, a new method for constructing decomposable maps from positive block matrices is derived. In addition, a method for constructing positive but not completely positive maps from Hermitian block matrices is also obtained.

Thermal Hyperbolic Metamaterials

We explore the near-field radiative thermal energy transfer properties of hyperbolic metamaterials. The presence of unique electromagnetic states in a broad bandwidth leads to super-planckian thermal energy transfer between metamaterials separated by a nano-gap. We consider practical phonon-polaritonic metamaterials for thermal engineering in the mid-infrared range and show that the effect exists in spite of the losses, absorption and finite unit cell size. For thermophotovoltaic energy conversion applications requiring energy transfer in the near-infrared range we introduce high temperature hyperbolic metamaterials based on plasmonic materials with a high melting point. Our work paves the way for practical high temperature radiative thermal energy transfer applications of hyperbolic metamaterials.

High temperature plasmonics: Narrowband, tunable, near-field thermal sources

We propose multiple approaches for controlling Wien's displacement law in the near-field leading to narrowband, tunable, spatially-coherent high temperature thermal sources. We show that narrowband super-planckian thermal emission relevant to the wavelength ranges for near-field thermophotovoltaics can be achieved by utilizing engineered plasmonic states of metals with a high melting point. Along with conventional thin film surface plasmon polaritons of high temperature plasmonic metals, we also introduce multiple different approaches to narrowband near field thermal emission a) epsilon-near-zero metamaterials b) tunable surface-plasmon-polaritons of anisotropic metamaterials and c) photonic van hove singularities. Our work solves the critical issue of a narrowband thermal source for near-field thermophotovoltaics.

Embedding periodic maps on surfaces into those on $S^3$

Call a periodic map $h$ on the closed orientable surface $Σ_g$ extendable if $h$ extends to a periodic map over the pair $(S^3, Σ_g)$ for possible embeddings $e: Σ_g\to S^3$. We determine the extendabilities for all periodical maps on $Σ_2$. The results involve various orientation preserving/reversing behalves of the periodical maps on the pair $(S^3, Σ_g)$. To do this we first list all periodic maps on $Σ_2$, and indeed we exhibit each of them as a composition of primary and explicit symmetries, like rotations, reflections and antipodal maps, which itself should be an interesting piece. A by-product is that for each even $g$, the maximum order periodic map on $Σ_g$ is extendable, which contrasts sharply to the situation in orientation preserving category.

Local channels preserving maximal entanglement or Schmidt number

Maximal entanglement and Schmidt number play an important role in various quantum information tasks. In this paper, it is shown that a local channel preserves maximal entanglement state(MES) or preserves pure states with Schmidt number $r$($r$ is a fixed integer) if and only if it is a local unitary operation.

Applications of hyperbolic metamaterial substrates

We review the properties of hyperbolic metamaterials and show that they are promising candidates as substrates for nano-imaging, nano-sensing, fluorescence engineering and for controlling thermal emission. Hyperbolic metamaterials can support unique bulk modes, tunable surface plasmon polaritons as well as surface hyperbolic states (Dyakonov plasmons) that can be used for a variety of applications. We compare the effective medium predictions with practical realizations of hyperbolic metamaterials to show their potential for radiative decay engineering, bio-imaging, sub-surface sensing, meta-plasmonics and super-Planckian thermal emission.

Optimal transfer of an unknown state via a bipartite operation

A fundamental task in quantum information science is to transfer an unknown state from particle $A$ to particle $B$ (often in remote space locations) by using a bipartite quantum operation $\mathcal{E}^{AB}$. We suggest the power of $\mathcal{E}^{AB}$ for quantum state transfer (QST) to be the maximal average probability of QST over the initial states of particle $B$ and the identifications of the state vectors between $A$ and $B$. We find the QST power of a bipartite quantum operations satisfies four desired properties between two $d$-dimensional Hilbert spaces. When $A$ and $B$ are qubits, the analytical expressions of the QST power is given. In particular, we obtain the exact results of the QST power for a general two-qubit unitary transformation.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for local creation of quantum discord

We show that a local channel cannot create quantum discord (QD) for zero QD states of size $d\geq3$ if and only if either it is a completely decohering channel or it is a nontrivial isotropic channel. For the qubit case this propertiy is additionally characteristic to the completely decohering channel or the commutativity-preserving unital channel. In particular, the exact forms of the completely decohering channel and the commutativity-preserving unital qubit channel are proposed. Consequently, our results confirm and improve the conjecture proposed by X. Hu et al. for the case of $d\geq3$ and improve the result proposed by A. Streltsov et al. for the qubit case. Furthermore, it is shown that a local channel nullifies QD in any state if and only if it is a completely decohering channel. Based on our results, some protocols of quantum information processing issues associated with QD, especially for the qubit case, would be experimentally accessible.

Broadband super-Planckian thermal emission from hyperbolic metamaterials

We develop the fluctuational electrodynamics of metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion and show the existence of broadband thermal emission beyond the black body limit in the near field. This arises due to the thermal excitation of unique bulk metamaterial modes, which do not occur in conventional media. We consider a practical realization of the hyperbolic metamaterial and estimate that the effect will be observable using the characteristic dispersion (topological transitions) of the metamaterial states. Our work paves the way for engineering the near-field thermal emission using metamaterials.

Entanglement detection beyond the CCNR criterion for infinite-dimensions

In this paper, in terms of the relation between the state and the reduced states of it, we obtain two inequalities which are valid for all separable states in infinite-dimensional bipartite quantum systems. One of them provides an entanglement criterion which is strictly stronger than the computable cross-norm or realignment (CCNR) criterion.
