Skyrmion Lattice Collapse and Defect-Induced Melting in Chiral Magnetic Films

Magnetic phase transitions are a test bed for exploring the physics of non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter, which become even more complex when topological constraints are involved. In particular, the investigation of skyrmions and skyrmion lattices offers insight into fundamental processes of topological-charge creation and annihilation upon changing the magnetic state. Nonetheless, the exact physical mechanisms behind these phase transitions remain unresolved. Here, we have systematically compared ultra-thin films with isotropic and anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI), demonstrating a nearly identical behavior in technologically relevant materials such as interfacial systems. We numerically show that in perfect systems skyrmion lattices can be inverted in a field-induced first-order phase transition. The existence of even a single defect, however, replaces the inversion with a second-order phase transition of defect-induced lattice melting. This radical change in the system's behavior from a first-order to a second-order phase transition signifies the importance of such an analysis for all realistic systems in order to correctly interpret experimental data. Our results shed light on complex topological charge annihilation mechanisms that mediate transitions between magnetic states and pave the way for an experimental realization of these phenomena.

Gap symmetry of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ at ambient pressure

Recent observations of two nodeless gaps in superconducting CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ have raised intensive debates on its exact gap symmetry, while a satisfactory theoretical basis is still lacking. Here we propose a phenomenological approach to calculate the superconducting gap functions, taking into consideration both the realistic Fermi surface topology and the intra- and interband quantum critical scatterings. Our calculations yield a nodeless $s^\pm$-wave solution in the presence of strong interband pairing interaction, in good agreement with experiments. This provides a possible basis for understanding the superconducting gap symmetry of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ at ambient pressure and indicates the potential importance of multiple Fermi surfaces and interband pairing interaction in understanding heavy fermion superconductivity.

Dynamic spin-lattice coupling and nematic fluctuations in NaFeAs

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study acoustic phonons and spin excitations in single crystals of NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron pnictide superconductors. NaFeAs exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at $T_s\approx 58$ K and a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $T_N\approx 45$ K. While longitudinal and out-of-plane transverse acoustic phonons behave as expected, the in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal considerable softening on cooling to $T_s$, and then harden on approaching $T_N$ before saturating below $T_N$. In addition, we find that spin-spin correlation lengths of low-energy magnetic excitations within the FeAs layer and along the $c$-axis increase dramatically below $T_s$, and show weak anomaly across $T_N$. These results suggest that the electronic nematic phase present in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase is closely associated with dynamic spin-lattice coupling, possibly arising from the one-phonon-two-magnon mechanism.

Ricci flow on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds

In this paper, we prove that if an asymptotically Euclidean manifold $(M^n,g)$ under the condition that $R \ge 0$ has long time existence of Ricci flow, the mass of $(M^n,g)$ is nonnegative. In addition, we give an independent proof of positive mass theorem in dimension $3$.

Dynamics of two-scalar-field cosmological models beyond the exponential potential

In this paper, we discuss the dynamics of two- scalar-field cosmological models. Unlike in the situation of exponential potential, we find that there are late-time attractors in which one scalar field dominates the energy density of universe and the other one decay. We also discuss the possibility of multiple attractors model which is useful to realize the evolution of the universe from a scaling era to recent acceleration era. We also give the conditions of the existence of multiple attractors.

Groebner-Shirshov bases for brace algebras

Let $A$ be a brace algebra. This structure implies that $A$ is also a pre-Lie algebra. In this paper, we establish Composition-Diamond lemma for brace algebras. Using this Composition-Diamond lemma we prove that each pre-Lie algebra $L$ can be embedded into a brace algebra $A_L$, i.e., $L$ is a pre-Lie subalgebra of $A_L$ up to isomorphism. We also determine an explicit linear basis for the brace algebra $A_{L}$.

Local breaking of four-fold rotational symmetry by short-range magnetic order in heavily overdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We investigate Cu-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with transport, magnetic susceptibility, and elastic neutron scattering measurements. In the heavily Cu-doped regime where long-range stripe-type antiferromagnetic order in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is suppressed, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (0.145 $\leq x \leq$ 0.553) samples exhibit spin-glass-like behavior in magnetic susceptibility and insulating-like temperature dependence in electrical transport. Using elastic neutron scattering, we find stripe-type short-range magnetic order in the spin-glass region identified by susceptibility measurements. The persistence of short-range magnetic order over a large doping range in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ likely arises from local arrangements of Fe and Cu that favor magnetic order, with Cu acting as vacancies relieving magnetic frustration and degeneracy. These results indicate locally broken four-fold rotational symmetry, suggesting that stripe-type magnetism is ubiquitous in iron pnictides.

Constructions of Optimal and Near-Optimal Quasi-Complementary Sequence Sets from an Almost Difference Set

Compared with the perfect complementary sequence sets, quasi-complementary sequence sets (QCSSs) can support more users to work in multicarrier CDMA communications. A near-optimal periodic QCSS is constructed in this paper by using an optimal quaternary sequence set and an almost difference set. With the change of the values of parameters in the almost difference set, the near-optimal QCSS can become asymptotically optimal and the number of users supported by the subcarrier channels in CDMA system has an exponential growth.

Spin excitation anisotropy in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase of BaFe2 As2

We use neutron polarization analysis to study temperature dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which has a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at $T_s$ and antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transition at $T_N$ with ordered moments along the orthorhombic $a$-axis below $T_s\approx T_N\approx 136$ K. In the paramagnetic tetragonal state at 160 K, spin excitations are isotropic in spin space with $M_a=M_b=M_c$, where $M_a$, $M_b$, and $M_c$ are spin excitations polarized along the $a$, $b$, and $c$-axis directions of the orthorhombic lattice, respectively. On cooling towards $T_N$, significant spin excitation anisotropy with $M_a>M_b\approx M_c$ develops below 3 meV with a diverging $M_a$ at $T_N$. The in-plane spin excitation anisotropy in the tetragonal phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is similar to those seen in the tetragonal phase of its electron and hole-doped superconductors, suggesting that spin excitation anisotropy is a direct probe of doping dependence of spin-orbit coupling and its connection to superconductivity in iron pnictides.

Revealing two heat-annealing related photoproduct systems and widely existed subgrain domains in organolead perovskite

For highly interested organolead perovskite based solar cells, the photoproducts are regarded as the co-existed exciton and free carriers. In this study, we carefully re-examined this conclusion with our recently developed density-resolved spectroscopic method. Heat-annealing related two photoproduct systems are observed. We found that the widely accepted model is only true for single crystal and freshly made films without heat-annealing. For those sufficiently heat-annealed films, another system presenting significant emissive exciton-carrier collision (ECC) is discovered. In addition, the appearing of ECC indicates the emerging of an internal morphology after heat annealing, which is assigned to a recently discussed twinning subgrain structure. We proved that such subgrain structures broadly exist in perovskite films. This finding could prove the morphological basis for high performance of perovskite working layers.

Gaiotto's Lagrangian subvarieties via loop groups

The purpose of this note is to give a simple proof of the fact that a certain substack, defined in [2], of the moduli stack $T^{\ast}Bun_G(Σ)$ of Higgs bundles over a curve $Σ$, for a connected, simply connected semisimple group $G$, possesses a Lagrangian structure. The substack, roughly speaking, consists of images under the moment map of global sections of principal $G$-bundles over $Σ$ twisted by a smooth symplectic variety with a Hamiltonian $G$-action.

Orbital selective neutron spin resonance in underdoped superconducting NaFe$_\textbf{0.985}$Co$_\textbf{0.015}$As

We use neutron scattering to study the electron-doped superconducting NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As ($T_c=14$ K), which has co-existing static antiferromagnetic (AF) order ($T_N=31$ K) and exhibits two neutron spin resonances ($E_{r1}\approx 3.5$ meV and $E_{r2}\approx 6$ meV) at the in-plane AF ordering wave vector ${\bf Q}_{\rm AF}={\bf Q}_{1}=(1,0)$ in reciprocal space. In the twinned state below the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition $T_s$, both resonance modes appear at ${\bf Q}_{1}$ but cannot be distinguished from ${\bf Q}_{2}=(0,1)$. By detwinning the single crystal with uniaxial pressure along the orthorhombic $b$-axis, we find that both resonances appear only at ${\bf Q}_{1}$ with vanishing intensity at ${\bf Q}_{2}$. Since electronic bands of the orbital $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ characters split below $T_s$ with the $d_{xz}$ band sinking $\sim10$ meV below the Fermi surface, our results indicate that the neutron spin resonances in NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As arise mostly from quasi-particle excitations between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces with the $d_{yz}$ orbital character.

The Rigidity of Ricci shrinkers of dimension four

In dimension $4$, we show that a nontrivial flat cone cannot be approximated by smooth Ricci shrinkers with bounded scalar curvature and Harnack inequality, under the pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff topology. As applications, we obtain uniform positive lower bounds of scalar curvature and potential functions on Ricci shrinkers satisfying some natural geometric properties.

A Mott insulator continuously connected to iron pnictide superconductors

Iron-based superconductivity develops near an antiferromagnetic order and out of a bad metal normal state, which has been interpreted as originating from a proximate Mott transition. Whether an actual Mott insulator can be realized in the phase diagram of the iron pnictides remains an open question. Here we use transport, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and neutron scattering to demonstrate that NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As near $x\approx 0.5$ exhibits real space Fe and Cu ordering, and are antiferromagnetic insulators with the insulating behavior persisting above the Néel temperature, indicative of a Mott insulator. Upon decreasing $x$ from $0.5$, the antiferromagnetic ordered moment continuously decreases, yielding to superconductivity around $x=0.05$. Our discovery of a Mott insulating state in NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As thus makes it the only known Fe-based material in which superconductivity can be smoothly connected to the Mott insulating state, highlighting the important role of electron correlations in the high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductivity.

Absence of long wavelength nematic fluctuations in LiFeAs

We investigated long-wavelength nematic fluctuations in an Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs near q=(0.05,0,0) by measuring temperature-dependent renormalization of acoustic phonons through inelastic neutron scattering. We found that the phonons have conventional behavior, as would be expected in the absence of electronic nematic fluctuations. This observation implies that either electron-phonon coupling is too weak to see any effect or that nematic fluctuations are not present.

Interplay between multiple charge-density waves and the relationship with superconductivity in Pd$_x$HoTe$_{3}$

HoTe$_{3}$, a member of the rare-earth tritelluride ($R$Te$_{3}$) family, and its Pd-intercalated compounds, Pd$_x$HoTe$_{3}$, where superconductivity (SC) sets in as the charge-density wave (CDW) transition is suppressed by the intercalation of a small amount of Pd, are investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and electrical resistivity. Two incommensurate CDWs with perpendicular nesting vectors are observed in HoTe$_{3}$ at low temperatures. With a slight Pd intercalation ($x$ = 0.01), the large CDW gap decreases and the small one increases. The momentum dependence of the gaps along the inner Fermi surface (FS) evolves from orthorhombicity to near tetragonality, manifesting the competition between two CDW orders. At $x$ = 0.02, both CDW gaps decreases with the emergence of SC. Further increasing the content of Pd for $x$ = 0.04 will completely suppress the CDW instabilities and give rise to the maximal SC order. The evolution of the electronic structures and electron-phonon couplings (EPCs) of the multiple CDWs upon Pd intercalation are carefully scrutinized. We discuss the interplay between multiple CDW orders, and the competition between CDW and SC in detail.

Dynamical co-existence of excitons and free carriers in perovskite probed by density-resolved fluorescent spectroscopic method

Using transient fluorescent spectra at time-zero, we develop a density-resolved fluorescent spectroscopic method for investigating photoproducts in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite and related photophysics. The density dependent dynamical co-existence of excitons and free carriers over a wide density range is experimentally observed for the first time. The exciton binding energy (EB) and the effective mass of electron-hole pair can be estimated based on such co-existence. No ionic polarization is found contributing to photophysical behavior. It also solves the conflict between the large experimentally measured EB and the small predicted values. The spectroscopic method also helps to detect the true free carrier density under continuous illumination without the interference of ionic conductivity. Our methods and results profoundly enrich the study and understanding of the photophysics in perovskite materials for photovoltaic applications.

Haze Visibility Enhancement: A Survey and Quantitative Benchmarking

This paper provides a comprehensive survey of methods dealing with visibility enhancement of images taken in hazy or foggy scenes. The survey begins with discussing the optical models of atmospheric scattering media and image formation. This is followed by a survey of existing methods, which are grouped to multiple image methods, polarizing filters based methods, methods with known depth, and single-image methods. We also provide a benchmark of a number of well known single-image methods, based on a recent dataset provided by Fattal and our newly generated scattering media dataset that contains ground truth images for quantitative evaluation. To our knowledge, this is the first benchmark using numerical metrics to evaluate dehazing techniques. This benchmark allows us to objectively compare the results of existing methods and to better identify the strengths and limitations of each method.
