Dunkl-Supersymmetric Orthogonal functions associated with classical orthogonal polynomials

We consider the eigenvalue problem associated with the Dunkl-type differential operator (in which the reflection operator R is involved) L = dx R + v(x), (v(-x) = -v(x)), in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanical models. By solving this eigenvalue problem with the help of known exactly solvable potentials, we construct several classes of functions satisfying certain orthogonality relations. We call them the Dunkl-supersymmetric (Dunkl-SUSY) orthogonal functions. These functions can be expressed in terms of the classical orthogonal polynomials (COPs). The key feature of these functions is that they appear by pairs, i.e., Qn(x) and Qn(-x) are both the eigenfunctions of L. A general formulation of the Dunkl-SUSY orthogonal polynomials is also presented.

A metamaterial-free fluid-flow cloak

The model of ideal fluid flow around a cylindrical obstacle exhibits a long-established physical picture where originally straight streamlines will be deflected over the whole space by the obstacle. As inspired by transformation optics and metamaterials, recent theories have proposed the concept of fluid cloaking able to recover the straight streamlines as if the obstacle does not exist. However, such a cloak, similar to all previous transformation-optics-based devices, relies on complex metamaterials, being difficult to implement. Here we deploy the theory of scattering cancellation and report on the experimental realization of a fluid-flow cloak without metamaterials. This cloak is realized by engineering the geometry of the fluid channel, which effectively cancels the dipole-like scattering of the obstacle. The cloaking effect is demonstrated via direct observation of the recovered straight streamlines in the fluid flow with injected dyes. Our work sheds new light on conventional fluid control and may find applications in microfluidic devices.

Quantum Data Fitting Algorithm for Non-sparse Matrices

We propose a quantum data fitting algorithm for non-sparse matrices, which is based on the Quantum Singular Value Estimation (QSVE) subroutine and a novel efficient method for recovering the signs of eigenvalues. Our algorithm generalizes the quantum data fitting algorithm of Wiebe, Braun, and Lloyd for sparse and well-conditioned matrices by adding a regularization term to avoid the over-fitting problem, which is a very important problem in machine learning. As a result, the algorithm achieves a sparsity-independent runtime of $O(κ^2\sqrt{N}\mathrm{polylog}(N)/(ε\logκ))$ for an $N\times N$ dimensional Hermitian matrix $\bm{F}$, where $κ$ denotes the condition number of $\bm{F}$ and $ε$ is the precision parameter. This amounts to a polynomial speedup on the dimension of matrices when compared with the classical data fitting algorithms, and a strictly less than quadratic dependence on $κ$.

ARBEE: Towards Automated Recognition of Bodily Expression of Emotion In the Wild

Humans are arguably innately prepared to comprehend others' emotional expressions from subtle body movements. If robots or computers can be empowered with this capability, a number of robotic applications become possible. Automatically recognizing human bodily expression in unconstrained situations, however, is daunting given the incomplete understanding of the relationship between emotional expressions and body movements. The current research, as a multidisciplinary effort among computer and information sciences, psychology, and statistics, proposes a scalable and reliable crowdsourcing approach for collecting in-the-wild perceived emotion data for computers to learn to recognize body languages of humans. To accomplish this task, a large and growing annotated dataset with 9,876 video clips of body movements and 13,239 human characters, named BoLD (Body Language Dataset), has been created. Comprehensive statistical analysis of the dataset revealed many interesting insights. A system to model the emotional expressions based on bodily movements, named ARBEE (Automated Recognition of Bodily Expression of Emotion), has also been developed and evaluated. Our analysis shows the effectiveness of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) features in characterizing arousal, and our experiments using LMA features further demonstrate computability of bodily expression. We report and compare results of several other baseline methods which were developed for action recognition based on two different modalities, body skeleton, and raw image. The dataset and findings presented in this work will likely serve as a launchpad for future discoveries in body language understanding that will enable future robots to interact and collaborate more effectively with humans.

Pilot evaluation of Collection API with PID Kernel Information

As digital data become increasingly available for research, there is a growing awareness of the value of domain agnostic Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) for data. A PID is a globally unique reference to a digital object, which in our case is data. In an ecosystem of connected digital objects, a PID will reference a digital object, and the digital object will be a simple entity, a collection of homogeneous objects, or a set of heterogeneous objects. In this paper, we study two recent recommendations from the Research Data Alliance (RDA) that both address pieces of an ecosystem of connected digital objects. The recommendations address Persistent ID records and representations of collections of data. We evaluate different approaches in where to locate key information about a data collection between these two component solutions.

The effect of Large Magellanic Cloud on the satellite galaxy population in Milky Way analogous Galaxies

Observational work have shown that the two brightest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), are rare amongst MW analogues. It is then interesting to know whether the presence of massive satellite has any effect on the whole satellite population in MW analogues. In this article, we investigate this problem using a semi-analytical model combined with the Millennium-II Simulation. MW-analogous galaxies are defined to have similar stellar mass or dark matter halo mass to the MW. We find that, in the first case, the halo mass is larger and there are, on average, twice as many satellites in Milky Way analogs if there is a massive satellite galaxy in the system. This is mainly from the halo formation bias. The difference is smaller if MW analogues are selected using halo mass. We also find that the satellites distribution is slightly asymmetric, being more concentrated on the line connecting the central galaxy and the massive satellite and that, on average, LMC have brought in 14.7 satellite galaxies with $M_{r}<0$ at its accretion, among which 4.5 satellites are still within a distance of 50kpc from the LMC. Considering other satellites, we predict that thereare 7.8 satellites with 50kpc of the LMC. By comparing our model with the early data of Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA), a survey to observe satellite galaxies around 100 Milky Way analogues, we find that SAGA has more bright satellites and less faint satellites than our model predictions. A future comparison with the final SAGA data is needed.

Exceptional Bannai-Ito polynomials

We construct a non-trivial type of 1-step exceptional Bannai-Ito polynomials which satisfy discrete orthogonality by using a generalized Darboux transformation. In this generalization, the Darboux transformed Bannai-Ito operator is directly obtained through an intertwining relation. Moreover, the seed solution, which consists of a gauge factor and a polynomial part, plays an important role in the construction of these 1-step exceptional Bannai-Ito polynomials. And we show that there are 8 classes of gauge factors. We also provide the eigenfunctions of the corresponding multiple-step exceptional Bannai-Ito operator which can be expressed as a 3 x 3 determinant.

Modeling disease progression in longitudinal EHR data using continuous-time hidden Markov models

Modeling disease progression in healthcare administrative databases is complicated by the fact that patients are observed only at irregular intervals when they seek healthcare services. In a longitudinal cohort of 76,888 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we used a continuous-time hidden Markov model with a generalized linear model to model healthcare utilization events. We found that the fitted model provides interpretable results suitable for summarization and hypothesis generation.

Inequivalent Multipartite Coherence Classes and New Coherence Monotones

Quantum coherence has received significant attention in recent years, but its study is mostly conducted in single party settings. In this paper, we generalize important results in multipartite entanglement theory to their counterparts in quantum coherence theory. First, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for when two pure multipartite states are equivalent under local quantum incoherent operations and classical communication (LICC), i.e., two states can be deterministically transformed to each other under LICC operations. Next, we investigate and give the conditions in which such a transformation succeeds only stochastically. Different from entanglement case for two-qubit states, we find that the SLICC equivalence classes are infinite. Moreover, it's possible that there are some classes of states in multipartite entanglement can convert into each other, while, they cannot convert into each other in multipartite coherence. In order to show the difference among SLICC classes, we introduce two coherence monotones: accessible coherence and source coherence, following the logistics given in [\emph{Phys.~Rev.~Lett. 115,~150502 (2015)}]. These coherence monotones have a straightforward operational interpretation, namely, the accessible coherence characterizes the proficiency of a state to generate other states via quantum incoherent operations, while the source coherence characterizes the set of states that can be reached via quantum incoherent operations acting on the given state of interest.

Monogamy of $α$th Power Entanglement Measurement in Qubit Systems

In this paper, we study the $α$th power monogamy properties related to the entanglement measure in bipartite states. The monogamy relations related to the $α$th power of negativity and the Convex- Roof Extended Negativity are obtained for N-qubit states. We also give a tighter bound of hierarchical monogamy inequality for the entanglement of formation. We find that the GHZ state and W state can be used to distinguish the $α$th power the concurrence for $0<α<2$. Furthermore, we compare concurrence with negativity in terms of monogamy property and investigate the difference between them.

General Monogamy of Tsallis $q$-Entropy Entanglement in Multiqubit Systems

In this paper, we study the monogamy inequality of Tsallis-q entropy entanglement. We first provide an analytic formula of Tsallis-q entropy entanglement in two-qubit systems for $\frac{5-\sqrt{13}}{2}\leq q\leq\frac{5+\sqrt{13}}{2}.$ The analytic formula of Tsallis-q entropy entanglement in $2\otimes d$ system is also obtained and we show that Tsallis-q entropy entanglement satisfies a set of hierarchical monogamy equalities. Furthermore, we prove the squared Tsallis-q entropy entanglement follows a general inequality in the qubit systems. Based on the monogamy relations, a set of multipartite entanglement indicators is constructed, which can detect all genuine multiqubit entangled states even in the case of $N$-tangle vanishes. Moreover, we study some examples in multipartite higher-dimensional system for the monogamy inequalities.

How much income inequality is fair? Nash bargaining solution and its connection to entropy

The question about fair income inequality has been an important open question in economics and in political philosophy for over two centuries with only qualitative answers such as the ones suggested by Rawls, Nozick, and Dworkin. We provided a quantitative answer recently, for an ideal free-market society, by developing a game-theoretic framework that proved that the ideal inequality is a lognormal distribution of income at equilibrium. In this paper, we develop another approach, using the Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS) framework, which also leads to the same conclusion. Even though the conclusion is the same, the new approach, however, reveals the true nature of NBS, which has been of considerable interest for several decades. Economists have wondered about the economic meaning or purpose of the NBS. While some have alluded to its fairness property, we show more conclusively that it is all about fairness. Since the essence of entropy is also fairness, we see an interesting connection between the Nash product and entropy for a large population of rational economic agents.

Full-sky ray-tracing simulation of weak lensing using ELUCID simulations: exploring galaxy intrinsic alignment and cosmic shear correlations

The intrinsic alignment of galaxies is an important systematic effect in weak-lensing surveys, which can affect the derived cosmological parameters. One direct way to distinguish different alignment models and quantify their effects on the measurement is to produce mocked weak-lensing surveys. In this work, we use full-sky ray-tracing technique to produce mock images of galaxies from the ELUCID $N$-body simulation run with the WMAP9 cosmology. In our model we assume that the shape of central elliptical galaxy follows that of the dark matter halo, and spiral galaxy follows the halo spin. Using the mocked galaxy images, a combination of galaxy intrinsic shape and the gravitational shear, we compare the predicted tomographic shear correlations to the results of KiDS and DLS. It is found that our predictions stay between the KiDS and DLS results. We rule out a model in which the satellite galaxies are radially aligned with the center galaxy, otherwise the shear-correlations on small scales are too high. Most important, we find that although the intrinsic alignment of spiral galaxies is very weak, they induce a positive correlation between the gravitational shear signal and the intrinsic galaxy orientation (GI). This is because the spiral galaxy is tangentially aligned with the nearby large-scale overdensity, contrary to the radial alignment of elliptical galaxy. Our results explain the origin of detected positive GI term from the weak-lensing surveys. We conclude that in future analysis, the GI model must include the dependence on galaxy types in more detail.

Alignment between satellite and central galaxies in the SDSS DR7: dependence on large-scale environment

The alignment between satellites and central galaxies has been studied in detail both in observational and theoretical works. The widely accepted fact is that the satellites preferentially reside along the major axis of their central galaxy. However, the origin and large-scale environment dependence of this alignment are still unknown. In an attempt to figure out those, we use data constructed from SDSS DR7 to investigate the large-scale environmental dependence of this alignment with emphasis on examining the alignments' dependence on the colour of the central galaxy. We find a very strong large-scale environmental dependence of the satellite-central alignment in groups with blue centrals. Satellites of blue centrals in knots are preferentially located perpendicular to the major axis of the centrals, and the alignment angle decreases with environment namely when going from knots to voids. The alignment angle strongly depend on the ${}^{0.1}(g-r)$ colour of centrals. We suggest that the satellite-central alignment is the result of a competition between satellite accretion within large scale-structure and galaxy evolution inside host haloes. For groups containing red central galaxies, the satellite-central alignment is mainly determined by the evolution effect, while for blue central dominated groups, the effect of large-scale structure plays a more important role, especially in knots. Our results provide an explanation for how the satellite-central alignment forms within different large-scale environments. The perpendicular case in groups and knots with blue centrals may also provide insight into understanding similar polar arrangements such the formation of the Milky Way and Centaurus A's satellite system.

RF Energy Harvesting Sensor Networks for Healthcare of Animals: Opportunities and Challenges

In recent years, the radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting technique is considered as a favorable alternative to supply power for the next-generation wireless sensor networks. Due to the features of energy self-sustainability and long lifetime, the energy harvesting sensor network (RF-EHSN) becomes a promising solution to provide smart healthcare services. Nowadays, many energy harvesting based applications have been developed for monitoring the health status of human beings; how to benefit animals, however, has not yet drawn people's attention. This article explores the potential of applying RF-EHSNs to monitoring the health level of animals. The unique challenges and potential solutions at different layers of an RF-EHSN for animals' healthcare service are studied.

DTER: Schedule Optimal RF Energy Request and Harvest for Internet of Things

We propose a new energy harvesting strategy that uses a dedicated energy source (ES) to optimally replenish energy for radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting powered Internet of Things. Specifically, we develop a two-step dual tunnel energy requesting (DTER) strategy that minimizes the energy consumption on both the energy harvesting device and the ES. Besides the causality and capacity constraints that are investigated in the existing approaches, DTER also takes into account the overhead issue and the nonlinear charge characteristics of an energy storage component to make the proposed strategy practical. Both offline and online scenarios are considered in the second step of DTER. To solve the nonlinear optimization problem of the offline scenario, we convert the design of offline optimal energy requesting problem into a classic shortest path problem and thus a global optimal solution can be obtained through dynamic programming (DP) algorithms. The online suboptimal transmission strategy is developed as well. Simulation study verifies that the online strategy can achieve almost the same energy efficiency as the global optimal solution in the long term.

Revisiting Transmission Scheduling in RF Energy Harvesting Wireless Communications

The transmission scheduling is a critical problem in radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting communications. Existing transmission strategies in an RF-based energy harvesting system is mainly based on a classic model, in which the data transmission is scheduled in a fixed feasible energy tunnel. In this paper, we re-examine the classic energy harvesting model and show through the theoretical analysis and experimental results that the bounds of feasible energy tunnel are dynamic, which can be affected by the transmission scheduling due to the impact of residual energy on the harvested one. To describe a practical energy harvesting process more accurately, a new model is proposed by adding a feedback loop that reflects the interplay between the energy harvest and the data transmission. Furthermore, to improve network performance, we revisit the design of an optimal transmission scheduling strategy based on the new model. To handle the challenge of the endless feedback loop in the new model, a recursive algorithm is developed. The simulation results reveal that the new transmission scheduling strategy can balance the efficiency of energy reception and energy utilization regardless of the length of energy packets, achieving improved throughput performance for wireless communications.

Halo intrinsic alignment: dependence on mass, formation time and environment

In this paper we use high-resolution cosmological simulations to study halo intrinsic alignment and its dependence on mass, formation time and large-scale environment. In agreement with previous studies using N-body simulations, it is found that massive halos have stronger alignment. For given mass, older halos have stronger alignment than younger ones. By identifying the cosmic environment of halo using Hessian matrix, we find that for given mass, halos in cluster regions also have stronger alignment than those in filament. The existing theory has not addressed these dependencies explicitly. In this work we extend the linear alignment model with inclusion of halo bias and find that the halo alignment with its mass and formation time dependence can be explained by halo bias. However, the model can not account for the environment dependence, as it is found that halo bias is lower in cluster and higher in filament. Our results suggest that halo bias and environment are independent factors in determining halo alignment. We also study the halo alignment correlation function and find that halos are strongly clustered along their major axes and less clustered along the minor axes. The correlated halo alignment can extend to scale as large as $100h^{-1}$Mpc where its feature is mainly driven by the baryon acoustic oscillation effect.
