Perpendicular Magnetization and Generic Realization of the Ising Model in Artificial Spin Ice

We have studied frustrated kagome arrays and unfrustrated honeycomb arrays of magnetostatically-interacting single-domain ferromagnetic islands with magnetization normal to the plane. The measured pairwise spin correlations of both lattices can be reproduced by models based solely on nearest-neighbor correlations. The kagome array has qualitatively different magnetostatics but identical lattice topology to previously-studied 'artificial spin ice' systems composed of in-plane moments. The two systems show striking similarities in the development of moment pair correlations, demonstrating a universality in artificial spin ice behavior independent of specific realization in a particular material system.

Constraints on cosmological models from strong gravitational lensing systems

Strong lensing has developed into an important astrophysical tool for probing both cosmology and galaxies (their structure, formation, and evolution). Using the gravitational lensing theory and cluster mass distribution model, we try to collect a relatively complete observational data concerning the Hubble constant independent ratio between two angular diameter distances $D_{ds}/D_s$ from various large systematic gravitational lens surveys and lensing by galaxy clusters combined with X-ray observations, and check the possibility to use it in the future as complementary to other cosmological probes. On one hand, strongly gravitationally lensed quasar-galaxy systems create such a new opportunity by combining stellar kinematics (central velocity dispersion measurements) with lensing geometry (Einstein radius determination from position of images). We apply such a method to a combined gravitational lens data set including 70 data points from Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) and Lens Structure and Dynamics survey (LSD). On the other hand, a new sample of 10 lensing galaxy clusters with redshifts ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 carefully selected from strong gravitational lensing systems with both X-ray satellite observations and optical giant luminous arcs, is also used to constrain three dark energy models ($Λ$CDM, constant $w$ and CPL) under a flat universe assumption. For the full sample ($n=80$) and the restricted sample ($n=46$) including 36 two-image lenses and 10 strong lensing arcs, we obtain relatively good fitting values of basic cosmological parameters, which generally agree with the results already known in the literature. This results encourages further development of this method and its use on larger samples obtained in the future.

PostLie algebra structures on the Lie algebra sl(2,C)

The PostLie algebra is an enriched structure of the Lie algebra that has recently arisen from operadic study. It is closely related to pre-Lie algebra, Rota-Baxter algebra, dendriform trialgebra, modified classical Yang-Baxter equations and integrable systems. We give a complete classification of PostLie algebra structures on the Lie algebra sl(2,C) up to isomorphism. We first reduce the classification problem to solving an equation of 3 x 3 matrices. To solve the latter problem, we make use of the classification of complex symmetric matrices up to the congruent action of orthogonal groups.

Optimized Dynamical Decoupling Sequences in Protecting Two-Qubit States

Aperiodic dynamical decoupling (DD) sequences of $π$ pulses are of great interest to decoherence control and have been recently extended from single-qubit to two-qubit systems. If the environmental noise power spectrum is made available, then one may further optimize aperiodic DD sequences to reach higher efficiency of decoherence suppression than known universal schemes. This possibility is investigated in this work for the protection of two-qubit states, using an exactly solvable pure dephasing model including both local and nonlocal noise. The performance of optimized DD sequences in protecting two-qubit states is compared with that achieved by nested Uhrig's DD (nested-UDD) sequences, for several different types of noise spectrum. Except for cases with noise spectrum decaying slowly in the high-frequency regime, optimized DD sequences with tens of control pulses can perform orders of magnitude better than that of nested-UDD. A two-qubit system with highly unbalanced local noise is also examined to shed more light on a recent experiment. Possible experiments that may be motivated by this work are discussed.

Optimal control of population transfer in Markovian open quantum systems

There has long been interest to control the transfer of population between specified quantum states. Recent work has optimized the control law for closed system population transfer by using a gradient ascent pulse engineer- ing algorithm [1]. Here, a spin-boson model consisting of two-level atoms which interact with the dissipative environment, is investigated. With opti- mal control, the quantum system can invert the populations of the quantum logic states. The temperature plays an important role in controlling popula- tion transfer. At low temperatures the control has active performance, while at high temperatures it has less erect. We also analyze the decoherence be- havior of open quantum systems with optimal population transfer control, and we find that these controls can prolong the coherence time. We hope that active optimal control can help quantum solid-state-based engineering.

Optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum systems via feedback

The problem of optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum system via weak measurement is presented. Based on the non-Markovian master equation, we evaluate exactly the non-Markovian effect on the dynamics of the system of interest interacting with a dissipative reservoir. We find that the non-Markovian reservoir has dual effects on the system: dissipation and backaction. The dissipation exhausts the coherence of the quantum system, whereas the backaction revives it. Moreover, we design the control Hamiltonian with the control laws attained by the stochastic optimal control and the corresponding optimal principle. At last, we considered the exact decoherence dynamics of a qubit in a dissipative reservoir composed of harmonic oscillators, and demonstrated the effectiveness of our optimal control strategy. Simulation results showed that the coherence will completely lost in the absence of control neither in non-Markovian nor Markovian system. However, the optimal feedback control steers it to a stationary stochastic process which fluctuates around the target. In this case the decoherence can be controlled effectively, which indicates that the engineered artificial reservoirs with optimal feedback control may be designed to protect the quantum coherence in quantum information and quantum computation.

Non-Markovian entanglement dynamics in coupled superconducting qubit systems

We theoretically analyze the entanglement generation and dynamics by coupled Josephson junction qubits. Considering a current-biased Josephson junction (CBJJ), we generate maximally entangled states. In particular, the entanglement dynamics is considered as a function of the decoherence parameters, such as the temperature, the ratio $r\equivω_c/ω_0$ between the reservoir cutoff frequency $ω_c$ and the system oscillator frequency $ω_0$, % between $ω_0$ the characteristic frequency of the %quantum system of interest, and $ω_c$ the cut-off frequency of %Ohmic reservoir and the energy levels split of the superconducting circuits in the non-Markovian master equation. We analyzed the entanglement sudden death (ESD) and entanglement sudden birth (ESB) by the non-Markovian master equation. Furthermore, we find that the larger the ratio $r$ and the thermal energy $k_BT$, the shorter the decoherence. In this superconducting qubit system we find that the entanglement can be controlled and the ESD time can be prolonged by adjusting the temperature and the superconducting phases $Φ_k$ which split the energy levels.

Optimal Dynamical Decoupling Sequence for Ohmic Spectrum

We investigate the optimal dynamical decoupling sequence for a qubit coupled to an ohmic environment. By analytically computing the derivatives of the decoherence function, the optimal pulse locations are found to satisfy a set of nonlinear equations which can be easily solved. These equations incorporates the environment information such as high-energy (UV) cutoff frequency ω_c, giving a complete description of the decoupling process. The solutions explain previous experimental and theoretical results of locally optimized dynamical decoupling (LODD) sequence in high-frequency dominated environment, which were obtained by purely numerical computation and experimental feedback. As shown in numerical comparison, these solutions outperform the Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) sequence by one or more orders of magnitude in the ohmic case.

Non-Markovian entanglement dynamics between two coupled qubits in the same environment

We analyze the dynamics of the entanglement in two independent non-Markovian channels. In particular, we focus on the entanglement dynamics as a function of the initial states and the channel parameters like the temperature and the ratio $r$ between $ω_0$ the characteristic frequency of the quantum system of interest, and $ω_c$ the cut-off frequency of Ohmic reservoir. We give a stationary analysis of the concurrence and find that the dynamic of non-markovian entanglement concurrence $\mathcal{C}_ρ(t)$ at temperature $k_BT=0$ is different from the $k_BT>0$ case. We find that "entanglement sudden death" (ESD) depends on the initial state when $k_BT=0$, otherwise the concurrence always disappear at finite time when $k_BT>0$, which means that ESD must happen. The main result of this paper is that the non-Markovian entanglement dynamic is fundamentally different from the Markovian one. In the Markovian channel, entanglement decays exponentially and vanishes only asymptotically, but in the non-Markovian channel the concurrence $\mathcal{C}_ρ(t)$ oscillates, especially in the high temperature case. Then an open-loop controller adjusted by the temperature is proposed to control the entanglement and prolong the ESD time.

The entanglement dynamics of the bipartite quantum system: toward entanglement sudden death

We investigate the entanglement dynamics of bipartite quantum system between two qubits with the dissipative environment. We begin with the standard Markovian master equation in the Lindblad form and the initial state which is prepared in the extended Werner-like state: $ρ^Φ_{AB}(0)$. We examine the conditions for entanglement sudden death (ESD) and calculate the corresponding ESD time by the Wootters' concurrence. We observe that ESD is determined by the parameters like the mean occupation number of the environment $N$, amount of initial entanglement $α$, and the purity $r$. For N=0, we get the analytical expression of both ESD condition and ESD time. For $N>0$ we give a theoretical analysis that ESD always occurs, and simulate the concurrence as a function of $γ_0t$ and one of the parameters $N, α$, and $r$.

Optimal Decoherence Control in non-Markovian Open, Dissipative Quantum Systems

We investigate the optimal control problem for non-Markovian open, dissipative quantum system. Optimal control using Pontryagin maximum principle is specifically derived. The influences of Ohmic reservoir with Lorentz-Drude regularization are numerically studied in a two-level system under the following three conditions: ω_0\llω_c, ω_0\approxω_c or ω_0\ggω_c, where ω_0 is the characteristic frequency of the quantum system of interest, and ω_c the cut-off frequency of Ohmic reservoir. The optimal control process shows its remarkable influences on the decoherence dynamics. The temperature is a key factor in the decoherence dynamics. We analyze the optimal decoherence control in high temperature, intermediate temperature, and low temperature reservoirs respectively. It implies that designing some engineered reservoirs with the controlled coupling and state of the environment can slow down the decoherence rate and delay the decoherence time. Moreover, we compare the non-Markovian optimal decoherence control with the Markovian one and find that with non-Markovian the engineered artificial reservoirs are better than with the Markovian approximation in controlling the open, dissipative quantum system's decoherence.
