Photonic gauge potential in a system with a synthetic frequency dimension

We generalize the concept of photonic gauge potential in real space, by introducing an additional "synthetic" frequency dimension in addition to the real space dimensions. As an illustration we consider a one-dimensional array of ring resonators, each supporting a set of resonant modes having a frequency comb with spacing $Ω$, undergoing a refractive index modulation at the modulation frequency equal to $Ω$. We show that the modulation phase provides a gauge potential in the synthetic two-dimensional space with the dimensions being the frequency and the spatial axes. Such gauge potential can create a topologically protected one-way edge state in the synthetic space that is useful for high-efficiency generation of higher-order side bands.

Correlated spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by zero-point fluctuations in a quantum mixture

We propose a form of spontaneous symmetry breaking driven by zero-point quantum fluctuations. To be specific, we consider the low-energy dynamics of a mixture of two species of spin-$1$ Bose gases. It is demonstrated that the quantum fluctuations lift a degeneracy regarding the relative orientations of the spin directors of the two species, and result in correlation or locking between these macroscopic variables. This locking persists in the presence of the trapping potential and weak magnetic fields, allowing, in principle, an experimental probe of this correlated spontaneous symmetry breaking, as a macroscopic manifestation of zero-point quantum fluctuations.

CP and CPT Violating Parameters Determined from the Joint Decays of $C=+1$ Entangled Neutral Pseudoscalar Mesons

Entangled pseudoscalar neutral meson pairs have been used in studying CP violation and searching CPT violation, but almost all the previous works concern $C=-1$ entangled state. Here we consider $C=+1$ entangled state of pseudoscalar neutral mesons, which is quite different from $C=-1$ entangled state and provides complementary information on symmetry violating parameters. After developing a general formalism, we consider three kinds of decay processes, namely, semileptonic-semileptonic, hadronic-hadronic and semileptonic-hadronic processes. For each kind of processes, we calculate the integrated rates of joint decays with a fixed time interval, as well as asymmetries defined for these joint rates of different channels. In turn, these asymmetries can be used to determine the four real numbers of the two indirect symmetry violating parameters, based on a general relation between the symmetry violating parameters and the decay asymmetries presented here. Various discussions are made on indirect and direct violations and the violation of $Δ{\cal F} =ΔQ$ rule, with some results presented as theorems.

Decoherence of quantum gates based on Aharonov-Anandan phases in a multistep scheme

We study quantum decoherence of single-qubit and two-qubit Aharonov-Anandan (AA) geometric phase gates realized in a multistep scheme. Each AA gate is also compared with the dynamical phase gate performing the same unitary transformation within the same time period and coupled with the same environment, which is modeled as harmonic oscillators. It is found that the fidelities and the entanglement protection of the AA phase gates are enhanced by the states being superpositions of different eigenstates of the environmental coupling, and the noncommutativity between the qubit interaction and the environmental coupling.

Effect of decoherence on the Berry phase of a spin-half in a rotating magnetic field

We investigate the decoherence effect of a bosonic bath on the Berry phase of a spin-1/2 in a time-dependent magnetic field, without making the Markovian approximation. A two-cycle process resulting in a pure Berry phase is considered. The low-frequency quantum noise significantly affects the Berry phase. In the adiabatic limit, the high-frequency quantum noise only has a small effect. The result is also valid in some more general situations.

Some exact results on CP and CPT violations in a $C=-1$ entangled pseudoscalar neutral meson pair

We consider neutral pseudoscalar mesons in an entangled or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state with $C=-1$. Due to quantum entanglement and antisymmetry of this state, the rates of the joint decays of the meson pair display various interesting features, as is well known. As functions of CP and CPT violating parameters, here we obtain some exact results about the joint decay rates and their asymmetries for a given time difference defined for joint decays to flavor eigenstates, as well as those for joint decays to CP eigenstates. The entanglement allows a meaningful and useful definition of the transition amplitude from a CP eigenstate of a meson. These results yield useful information and criteria on CP and CPT violations.

Signatures of shear thinning-thickening transition in dense athermal shear flows

In non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of dense athermal shear flows, we observe the transition from shear thinning to shear thickening at a crossover shear rate $\dotγ_c$. Shear thickening occurs when $\frac{{\rm d (ln} T_g)}{{\rm d (ln}\dotγ)}>2$ with $T_g$ the granular temperature. At the transition, the pair distribution function shows the strongest anisotropy. Meanwhile, the dynamics undergo apparent changes, signified by distinct scaling behaviors of the mean squared displacement and relaxation time on both sides of $\dotγ_c$. These features serve as robust signatures of the shear thinning-thickening transition.

Sine-Gordon model coupled with a free scalar field emergent in the low-energy phase dynamics of a mixture of pseudospin-1/2 Bose gases with interspecies spin exchange

Using the approach of low-energy effective field theory, the phase diagram is studied for a mixture of two species of pseudospin-$\1/2$ Bose atoms with interspecies spin-exchange. There are four mean-field regimes on the parameter plane of $g_e$ and $g_z$, where $g_e$ is the interspecies spin-exchange interaction strength, while $g_z$ is the difference between the interaction strength of interspecies scattering without spin-exchange of equal spins and that of unequal spins. Two regimes, with $|g_z| > |g_e|$, correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel along $z$ direction, and the low energy excitations are equivalent to those of two-component spinless Bosons. The other two regimes, with $|g_e| > |g_z|$, correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel on $xy$ plane, and the low energy excitations are described by a sine-Gordon model coupled with a free scalar field, where the effective fields are combinations of the phases of the original four Boson fields. In (1+1)-dimension, they are described by Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization group (RG) equations, and there are three sectors in the phase plane of a scaling dimension and a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of the cosine interaction, both depending on the densities. The gaps of these elementary excitations are experimental probes of the underlying many-body ground states.

Number and spin densities in the ground state of a trapped mixture of two pseudospin-1/2 Bose gases with interspecies spin-exchange interaction

We consider the ground state of a mixture of two pseudospin-$\1/2$ Bose gases with interspecies spin exchange in a trapping potential. In the mean field approach, the ground state can be described in terms of four wave functions governed by a set of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii-like (GP-like) equations, which differ from the usual GP equations in the existence of an interference term due to spin-exchange coupling between the two species. Using these GP-like equations, we calculate such ground state properties as chemical potentials, density profiles and spin density profiles, which are directly observable in experiments. We compare the cases with and without spin exchange. It is demonstrated that the spin exchange between the two species lowers the chemical potentials, tends to equalize the wave functions of the two pseudospin components of each species, and thus homogenizes the spin density. The novel features of the density and spin density profiles can serve as experimental probes of this novel Bose system.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen State of Neutral Mesons: The Entangled Partner of K_L Is Not K_S

In a $ϕ$ factory, neutral kaons are produced in Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) states, furthermore, a $K_S$ is tagged if its entangled partner is detected as $K_L$, and vice versa. Here we point out that upon its detection as $K_L$, one of the EPR-entangled particles is projected into one of the orthogonal basis states, consequently the other particle should be projected to the state orthogonal to $K_L$, denoted as $K_{\perp L}$, rather than $K_S$, because $K_S$ is not orthogonal to $K_L$. Therefore the semileptonic charge asymmetry of what was previously regarded as $K_S$ is really that of $K_{\perp L}$. Based on this re-tagging, we modify the experimentally determined values of several parameters, including the one describing the violation of $ΔS = ΔQ$ rule, the one describing CPT violation for $ΔS = ΔQ$ transitions, and the time-like CPT- and Lorentz-violating coefficient for the two valence quarks in a kaon.

Extracting Rephase-invariant CP and CPT Violating Parameters from Asymmetries of Time-Ordered Integrated Rates of Correlated Decays of Entangled Mesons

We present a general model-independent formalism of measuring CP and CPT violating parameters through time-ordered integrated rates of correlated decays of $C=\pm 1$ entangled states of neutral pseudoscalar mesons. We give the general formulae of CP and CPT violating parameters in terms of four measurable asymmetries defined for the time-ordered integrated rates, applicable to all kinds of decay product. Two special cases which are often realized in experiments are discussed specifically.

Exact Theorems Concerning CP and CPT Violations in C=-1 Entangled State of Pseudoscalar Neutral Mesons

Neutral pseudoscalar mesons in an entangled or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state are routinely produced in phi and B factories. Based on the peculiar properties of an entangled state, we present some general exact theorems about parameters characterizing CP and CPT violations, by using various asymmetries defined for the correlated decays of the two entangled mesons, which are rigorously calculated.

Field theory of low energy excitations of a mixture of two species of pseudospin-1/2 Bose gases with interspecies spin-exchange

We develop a low energy effective field theory of a mixture of two species of pseudospin-1/2 atoms with interspecies spin-exchange, in addition to density-density interaction. This approach is beyond the single orbital-mode approximation. In a wide parameter regime, it indicates the existence of the four elementary excitations, especially a gapped mode due to interspecies spin-exchange. On the other hand, the spectrum of the effective spin Hamiltonian yielded by the single mode approximation can be obtained by quantizing the homogeneous excitation, which is spin excitation and is the long-wavelength limit of the gapped mode of elementary excitations. These low energy excitations can be experimentally measured by using Bragg spectroscopy.

Binary mixture of pseudospin-1/2 Bose gases with interspecies spin exchange: from classical fixed points and ground states to quantum ground states

We consider the effective spin Hamiltonian describing a mixture of two species of pseudo-spin-1/2 Bose gases with interspecies spin exchange. First we analyze the stability of the fixed points of the corresponding classical dynamics, of which the signature is found in quantum dynamics with a disentangled initial state. Focusing on the case without an external potential, we find all the ground states by taking into account quantum fluctuations around the classical ground state in each parameter regime. The nature of entanglement and its relation with classical bifurcation is investigated. When the total spins of the two species are unequal, the maximal entanglement at the parameter point of classical bifurcation is possessed by the excited state corresponding to the classical fixed point which bifurcates, rather than by the ground state.

Ground states of a mixture of two species of spin-1 Bose gases with interspecies spin exchange in a magnetic field

We consider a mixture of two species of spin-1 atoms with both interspecies and intraspecies spin exchanges in a weak magnetic field. Under the usual single mode approximation, it can be reduced to a model of coupled giant spins. We find most of its ground states. This is a complicated problem of energy minimization, with three quantum variables under constraints, i.e. the total spin of each species and the total spin of the whole mixture, as well as four parameters, including intraspecies and interspecies spin coupling strengths and the magnetic field. The quantum phase diagram is very rich. Compared with the case without a magnetic field, the ground states are modified by a magnetic field, which also modifies the ground state boundaries or introduces new crossover regimes on the phase diagram. Without interspecies spin coupling, the quantum phase transitions existing in absence of a magnetic field disappear when a magnetic field is applied, which leads to crossover regimes in the phase diagram. Under ferromagnetic interspecies spin coupling, the ground states remain disentangled no matter whether there is a magnetic field. For antiferromagnetic interspecies spin coupling, a magnetic field entangles the ground states in some parameter regimes. When the intraspecies spin couplings are both ferromagnetic, the quantum phase transition between antiferromagnetic and zero interspecies spin couplings survives the magnetic field. When the intraspecies spin couplings are both antiferromagnetic, a magnetic field induces new quantum phase transitions between antiferromagnetic and zero interspecies spin couplings.

Polarized entangled Bose-Einstein condensation

We consider a mixture of two distinct species of atoms of pseudospin-1/2 with both intraspecies and Interspecies spin-exchange interactions, and find all the ground stats in a general case of the parameters in the effective Hamiltonian. In general, corresponding to the two species and two pseudo-spin states, there are four orbital wave functions into which the atoms condense. We find that in certain parameter regimes, the ground state is the so-called polarized entangled Bose-Einstein condensation, i.e. in addition to condensation of interspecies singlet pairs, there are unpaired atoms with spins polarized in the same direction. The interspecies entanglement and polarization significantly affect the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equations governing the four orbital wave functions into which the atoms condense, as an interesting interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Three-dimensional quantum phase diagram of the exact ground states of a mixture of two species of spin-1 Bose gases with interspecies spin exchange

We find nearly all the exact ground states of a mixture of two species of spin-1 atoms with both interspecies and intraspecies spin exchanges in absence of a magnetic field. The quantum phase diagram in the three-dimensional parameter space and its two-dimensional cross sections are described. The boundaries where the ground states are either continuous or discontinuous are determined, with the latter identified as where quantum phase transitions take place. The two species are always disentangled if the interspecies spin coupling is ferromagnetic or zero. Quantum phase transitions occur when the interspecies spin coupling varies between antiferromagtic and zero or ferromagnetic while the two intraspecies spin couplings both remain ferromagnetic. On the other hand, by tuning the interspecies spin coupling from zero to antiferromagnetic and then back to zero, one can circumvent the quantum phase transition due to sign change of the intraspecies spin coupling of a single species, which is spin-decoupled with the other species with ferromagnetic intraspecies spin coupling. Overall speaking, interplay among interspecies and two intraspecies spin exchanges significantly enriches quantum phases of spinor atomic gases.
