Nonhermitian adiabatic perturbation theory of topological quantization of the average velocity of a magnetic skyrmion under thermal fluctuations

We study the two-dimensional motion of a magnetic skyrmion driven by a ratchetlike polarized electric current that is periodic in both space and time. Some general cases are considered, in each of which,in the low temperature and adiabatic limit, regardless of the details of the driving current, the time and statistical average velocity along any direction is topologically quantized as a Chern number, multiplied by a basic unit. We make two approaches, one based on identifying the drift direction, and the other based on the nonhermitian adiabatic perturbation theory developed for the Fokker-Planck operator. Both approach applies in the case of periodicity along the direction of the driving current and homogeneity in the transverse direction, for which the analytical result is confirmed by our numerical simulation on the constituent spins, and a convenient experiment is proposed.

Accelerating Unruh-DeWitt detectors coupled with a spinor field

The behavior of accelerating Unruh-DeWitt detectors coupled with a spinor field in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime is investigated. For a single point-like detector with Gaussian switching function, the transition probability increases with the acceleration and thus the antiUnruh effect effect cannot occur. Due to the spinor structure of the Dirac field, UV divergences are encountered in the calculation of the entanglement between the detectors. After introducing some UV cutoff $Λ$, the logarithmic negativity of detectors is shown to behave nonmonotonically with respect to the acceleration. Besides, the logarithmic negativity increases with the cutoff $Λ$ and decreases with the distance between the detectors. The mutual information between the two detectors is also discussed.

Breaking the Curse of Quality Saturation with User-Centric Ranking

A key puzzle in search, ads, and recommendation is that the ranking model can only utilize a small portion of the vastly available user interaction data. As a result, increasing data volume, model size, or computation FLOPs will quickly suffer from diminishing returns. We examined this problem and found that one of the root causes may lie in the so-called ``item-centric'' formulation, which has an unbounded vocabulary and thus uncontrolled model complexity. To mitigate quality saturation, we introduce an alternative formulation named ``user-centric ranking'', which is based on a transposed view of the dyadic user-item interaction data. We show that this formulation has a promising scaling property, enabling us to train better-converged models on substantially larger data sets.

i-Code V2: An Autoregressive Generation Framework over Vision, Language, and Speech Data

The convergence of text, visual, and audio data is a key step towards human-like artificial intelligence, however the current Vision-Language-Speech landscape is dominated by encoder-only models which lack generative abilities. We propose closing this gap with i-Code V2, the first model capable of generating natural language from any combination of Vision, Language, and Speech data. i-Code V2 is an integrative system that leverages state-of-the-art single-modality encoders, combining their outputs with a new modality-fusing encoder in order to flexibly project combinations of modalities into a shared representational space. Next, language tokens are generated from these representations via an autoregressive decoder. The whole framework is pretrained end-to-end on a large collection of dual- and single-modality datasets using a novel text completion objective that can be generalized across arbitrary combinations of modalities. i-Code V2 matches or outperforms state-of-the-art single- and dual-modality baselines on 7 multimodal tasks, demonstrating the power of generative multimodal pretraining across a diversity of tasks and signals.

Exact conditions for antiUnruh effect in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime

Exact conditions for antiUnruh effect in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime are obtained. For detectors with Gaussian switching functions, the analytic results are similar to previous ones, indicating that antiUnruh effect occurs when the energy gap matches the characteristic time scale. However, this conclusion does not hold for detectors with square wave switching functions, in which case the condition turns out to depend on both the energy gap and the characteristic time scale in some nontrivial way. We also show analytically that there is no antiUnruh effect for detectors with Gaussian switching functions in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime.

Devil is in the Queries: Advancing Mask Transformers for Real-world Medical Image Segmentation and Out-of-Distribution Localization

Real-world medical image segmentation has tremendous long-tailed complexity of objects, among which tail conditions correlate with relatively rare diseases and are clinically significant. A trustworthy medical AI algorithm should demonstrate its effectiveness on tail conditions to avoid clinically dangerous damage in these out-of-distribution (OOD) cases. In this paper, we adopt the concept of object queries in Mask Transformers to formulate semantic segmentation as a soft cluster assignment. The queries fit the feature-level cluster centers of inliers during training. Therefore, when performing inference on a medical image in real-world scenarios, the similarity between pixels and the queries detects and localizes OOD regions. We term this OOD localization as MaxQuery. Furthermore, the foregrounds of real-world medical images, whether OOD objects or inliers, are lesions. The difference between them is less than that between the foreground and background, possibly misleading the object queries to focus redundantly on the background. Thus, we propose a query-distribution (QD) loss to enforce clear boundaries between segmentation targets and other regions at the query level, improving the inlier segmentation and OOD indication. Our proposed framework is tested on two real-world segmentation tasks, i.e., segmentation of pancreatic and liver tumors, outperforming previous state-of-the-art algorithms by an average of 7.39% on AUROC, 14.69% on AUPR, and 13.79% on FPR95 for OOD localization. On the other hand, our framework improves the performance of inlier segmentation by an average of 5.27% DSC when compared with the leading baseline nnUNet.

Code-Switching Text Generation and Injection in Mandarin-English ASR

Code-switching speech refers to a means of expression by mixing two or more languages within a single utterance. Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) with End-to-End (E2E) modeling for such speech can be a challenging task due to the lack of data. In this study, we investigate text generation and injection for improving the performance of an industry commonly-used streaming model, Transformer-Transducer (T-T), in Mandarin-English code-switching speech recognition. We first propose a strategy to generate code-switching text data and then investigate injecting generated text into T-T model explicitly by Text-To-Speech (TTS) conversion or implicitly by tying speech and text latent spaces. Experimental results on the T-T model trained with a dataset containing 1,800 hours of real Mandarin-English code-switched speech show that our approaches to inject generated code-switching text significantly boost the performance of T-T models, i.e., 16% relative Token-based Error Rate (TER) reduction averaged on three evaluation sets, and the approach of tying speech and text latent spaces is superior to that of TTS conversion on the evaluation set which contains more homogeneous data with the training set.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy and Complexity for D-Wave Superconductors

By using the RT formula and the subregion CV conjecture respectively, we numerically investigate the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and holographic subregion complexity (HSC) for two holographic d-wave superconducting models with backreactions. We find that both the HEE and HSC can be used as good probes to these two d-wave superconducting phase transitions. The HEE of superconducting phase is always lower than that of the normal phase due to the condensation of degrees of freedom below the critical temperature Tc. However, for the HSC, it behaves differently and interestingly, which depends on both the strip-width Lx and backreaction \k{appa}.

Efficient End-to-End Video Question Answering with Pyramidal Multimodal Transformer

This paper presents a new method for end-to-end Video Question Answering (VideoQA), aside from the current popularity of using large-scale pre-training with huge feature extractors. We achieve this with a pyramidal multimodal transformer (PMT) model, which simply incorporates a learnable word embedding layer, a few convolutional and transformer layers. We use the anisotropic pyramid to fulfill video-language interactions across different spatio-temporal scales. In addition to the canonical pyramid, which includes both bottom-up and top-down pathways with lateral connections, novel strategies are proposed to decompose the visual feature stream into spatial and temporal sub-streams at different scales and implement their interactions with the linguistic semantics while preserving the integrity of local and global semantics. We demonstrate better or on-par performances with high computational efficiency against state-of-the-art methods on five VideoQA benchmarks. Our ablation study shows the scalability of our model that achieves competitive results for text-to-video retrieval by leveraging feature extractors with reusable pre-trained weights, and also the effectiveness of the pyramid.

Learning From Biased Soft Labels

Knowledge distillation has been widely adopted in a variety of tasks and has achieved remarkable successes. Since its inception, many researchers have been intrigued by the dark knowledge hidden in the outputs of the teacher model. Recently, a study has demonstrated that knowledge distillation and label smoothing can be unified as learning from soft labels. Consequently, how to measure the effectiveness of the soft labels becomes an important question. Most existing theories have stringent constraints on the teacher model or data distribution, and many assumptions imply that the soft labels are close to the ground-truth labels. This paper studies whether biased soft labels are still effective. We present two more comprehensive indicators to measure the effectiveness of such soft labels. Based on the two indicators, we give sufficient conditions to ensure biased soft label based learners are classifier-consistent and ERM learnable. The theory is applied to three weakly-supervised frameworks. Experimental results validate that biased soft labels can also teach good students, which corroborates the soundness of the theory.

Metal-bonded Atomic Layers of Transition Metal Carbides (MXenes)

Although two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have fantastic physical and chemical properties as well as wide applications, it remains challenging to produce stable MXenes due to their rapid structural degradation. Here, unique metal-bonded atomic layers of transition metal carbides with high stabilities are produced via a simple topological reaction between chlorine-terminated MXenes and selected metals, where the metals enable to not only remove Cl terminations, but also efficiently bond with adjacent atomic MXene slabs, driven by the symmetry of MAX phases. The films constructed from Al-bonded Ti$_3$C$_2$Cl$_x$ atomic layers show high oxidation resistance up to 400 degrees centigrade and low sheet resistance of 9.3 ohm per square. Coupled to the multi-layer structure, the Al-bonded Ti$_3$C$_2$Cl$_x$ film displays a significantly improved EMI shielding capability with a total shielding effectiveness value of 39 dB at a low thickness of 3.1 micron, outperforming pure Ti$_3$C$_2$Cl$_x$ film.

Dynamic Scene Deblurring Based on Continuous Cross-Layer Attention Transmission

The deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) using attention mechanism have achieved great success for dynamic scene deblurring. In most of these networks, only the features refined by the attention maps can be passed to the next layer and the attention maps of different layers are separated from each other, which does not make full use of the attention information from different layers in the CNN. To address this problem, we introduce a new continuous cross-layer attention transmission (CCLAT) mechanism that can exploit hierarchical attention information from all the convolutional layers. Based on the CCLAT mechanism, we use a very simple attention module to construct a novel residual dense attention fusion block (RDAFB). In RDAFB, the attention maps inferred from the outputs of the preceding RDAFB and each layer are directly connected to the subsequent ones, leading to a CCLAT mechanism. Taking RDAFB as the building block, we design an effective architecture for dynamic scene deblurring named RDAFNet. The experiments on benchmark datasets show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art deblurring approaches, and demonstrate the effectiveness of CCLAT mechanism.

Quantized Training of Gradient Boosting Decision Trees

Recent years have witnessed significant success in Gradient Boosting Decision Trees (GBDT) for a wide range of machine learning applications. Generally, a consensus about GBDT's training algorithms is gradients and statistics are computed based on high-precision floating points. In this paper, we investigate an essentially important question which has been largely ignored by the previous literature: how many bits are needed for representing gradients in training GBDT? To solve this mystery, we propose to quantize all the high-precision gradients in a very simple yet effective way in the GBDT's training algorithm. Surprisingly, both our theoretical analysis and empirical studies show that the necessary precisions of gradients without hurting any performance can be quite low, e.g., 2 or 3 bits. With low-precision gradients, most arithmetic operations in GBDT training can be replaced by integer operations of 8, 16, or 32 bits. Promisingly, these findings may pave the way for much more efficient training of GBDT from several aspects: (1) speeding up the computation of gradient statistics in histograms; (2) compressing the communication cost of high-precision statistical information during distributed training; (3) the inspiration of utilization and development of hardware architectures which well support low-precision computation for GBDT training. Benchmarked on CPUs, GPUs, and distributed clusters, we observe up to 2$\times$ speedup of our simple quantization strategy compared with SOTA GBDT systems on extensive datasets, demonstrating the effectiveness and potential of the low-precision training of GBDT. The code will be released to the official repository of LightGBM.

Benchmarking Graphormer on Large-Scale Molecular Modeling Datasets

This technical note describes the recent updates of Graphormer, including architecture design modifications, and the adaption to 3D molecular dynamics simulation. With these simple modifications, Graphormer could attain better results on large-scale molecular modeling datasets than the vanilla one, and the performance gain could be consistently obtained on 2D and 3D molecular graph modeling tasks. In addition, we show that with a global receptive field and an adaptive aggregation strategy, Graphormer is more powerful than classic message-passing-based GNNs. Empirically, Graphormer could achieve much less MAE than the originally reported results on the PCQM4M quantum chemistry dataset used in KDD Cup 2021. In the meanwhile, it greatly outperforms the competitors in the recent Open Catalyst Challenge, which is a competition track on NeurIPS 2021 workshop, and aims to model the catalyst-adsorbate reaction system with advanced AI models. All codes could be found at https://github.com/Microsoft/Graphormer.

A deep local attention network for pre-operative lymph node metastasis prediction in pancreatic cancer via multiphase CT imaging

Lymph node (LN) metastasis status is one of the most critical prognostic and cancer staging factors for patients with resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), or in general, for any types of solid malignant tumors. Preoperative prediction of LN metastasis from non-invasive CT imaging is highly desired, as it might be straightforwardly used to guide the following neoadjuvant treatment decision and surgical planning. Most studies only capture the tumor characteristics in CT imaging to implicitly infer LN metastasis and very few work exploit direct LN's CT imaging information. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to propose a fully-automated LN segmentation and identification network to directly facilitate the LN metastasis status prediction task. Nevertheless LN segmentation/detection is very challenging since LN can be easily confused with other hard negative anatomic structures (e.g., vessels) from radiological images. We explore the anatomical spatial context priors of pancreatic LN locations by generating a guiding attention map from related organs and vessels to assist segmentation and infer LN status. As such, LN segmentation is impelled to focus on regions that are anatomically adjacent or plausible with respect to the specific organs and vessels. The metastasized LN identification network is trained to classify the segmented LN instances into positives or negatives by reusing the segmentation network as a pre-trained backbone and padding a new classification head. More importantly, we develop a LN metastasis status prediction network that combines the patient-wise aggregation results of LN segmentation/identification and deep imaging features extracted from the tumor region. Extensive quantitative nested five-fold cross-validation is conducted on a discovery dataset of 749 patients with PDAC.

Forward Inclusive Jet Productions in pA Collisions

Motivated by recent experimental LHC measurements on the forward inclusive jet productions and based on our previous calculations on forward hadron productions, we calculate single inclusive jet cross-section in $pA$ collisions at forward rapidity within the color glass condensate framework up to the next-to-leading-order. Moreover, with the application of jet algorithm and proper subtraction of the rapidity and collinear divergences, we further demonstrate that the resulting next-to-leading-order hard coefficients are finite. In addition, in order to deal with the large logarithms that can potentially spoil the convergence of the perturbative expansion and improve the reliability of the numerical predictions, we introduce the collinear jet function and the threshold jet function and resum these large logarithms hidden in the hard coefficients.

A parton shower generator based on the GLR equation

We develop a novel Monte Carlo parton branching algorithm based on the Gribov-Levin-Ryskin (GLR) equation. The formulations of both forward evolution and backward evolution for the GLR equation are presented. The results from the Monte Carlo implementation of the GLR equation are in full agreement with its numerical solutions. Our work thus paves the way for developing an event generator that embodies the saturation effect.
