Medical Knowledge Graph QA for Drug-Drug Interaction Prediction based on Multi-hop Machine Reading Comprehension

Drug-drug interaction prediction is a crucial issue in molecular biology. Traditional methods of observing drug-drug interactions through medical experiments require significant resources and labor. This paper presents a medical knowledge graph question answering model, dubbed MedKGQA, that predicts drug-drug interaction by employing machine reading comprehension from closed-domain literature and constructing a knowledge graph of drug-protein triplets from open-domain documents. The model vectorizes the drug-protein target attributes in the graph using entity embeddings and establishes directed connections between drug and protein entities based on the metabolic interaction pathways of protein targets in the human body. This aligns multiple external knowledge and applies it to learn the graph neural network. Without bells and whistles, the proposed model achieved a 4.5% improvement in terms of drug-drug interaction prediction accuracy compared to previous state-of-the-art models on the Qangaroo MedHop dataset. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the model and verify the feasibility of integrating external knowledge in machine reading comprehension tasks.

V2Meow: Meowing to the Visual Beat via Video-to-Music Generation

Video-to-music generation demands both a temporally localized high-quality listening experience and globally aligned video-acoustic signatures. While recent music generation models excel at the former through advanced audio codecs, the exploration of video-acoustic signatures has been confined to specific visual scenarios. In contrast, our research confronts the challenge of learning globally aligned signatures between video and music directly from paired music and videos, without explicitly modeling domain-specific rhythmic or semantic relationships. We propose V2Meow, a video-to-music generation system capable of producing high-quality music audio for a diverse range of video input types using a multi-stage autoregressive model. Trained on 5k hours of music audio clips paired with video frames mined from in-the-wild music videos, V2Meow is competitive with previous domain-specific models when evaluated in a zero-shot manner. It synthesizes high-fidelity music audio waveforms solely by conditioning on pre-trained general-purpose visual features extracted from video frames, with optional style control via text prompts. Through both qualitative and quantitative evaluations, we demonstrate that our model outperforms various existing music generation systems in terms of visual-audio correspondence and audio quality. Music samples are available at tinyurl.com/v2meow.

Representation Learning for Frequent Subgraph Mining

Identifying frequent subgraphs, also called network motifs, is crucial in analyzing and predicting properties of real-world networks. However, finding large commonly-occurring motifs remains a challenging problem not only due to its NP-hard subroutine of subgraph counting, but also the exponential growth of the number of possible subgraphs patterns. Here we present Subgraph Pattern Miner (SPMiner), a novel neural approach for approximately finding frequent subgraphs in a large target graph. SPMiner combines graph neural networks, order embedding space, and an efficient search strategy to identify network subgraph patterns that appear most frequently in the target graph. SPMiner first decomposes the target graph into many overlapping subgraphs and then encodes each subgraph into an order embedding space. SPMiner then uses a monotonic walk in the order embedding space to identify frequent motifs. Compared to existing approaches and possible neural alternatives, SPMiner is more accurate, faster, and more scalable. For 5- and 6-node motifs, we show that SPMiner can almost perfectly identify the most frequent motifs while being 100x faster than exact enumeration methods. In addition, SPMiner can also reliably identify frequent 10-node motifs, which is well beyond the size limit of exact enumeration approaches. And last, we show that SPMiner can find large up to 20 node motifs with 10-100x higher frequency than those found by current approximate methods.

Can One Embedding Fit All? A Multi-Interest Learning Paradigm Towards Improving User Interest Diversity Fairness

Recommender systems (RSs) have gained widespread applications across various domains owing to the superior ability to capture users' interests. However, the complexity and nuanced nature of users' interests, which span a wide range of diversity, pose a significant challenge in delivering fair recommendations. In practice, user preferences vary significantly; some users show a clear preference toward certain item categories, while others have a broad interest in diverse ones. Even though it is expected that all users should receive high-quality recommendations, the effectiveness of RSs in catering to this disparate interest diversity remains under-explored. In this work, we investigate whether users with varied levels of interest diversity are treated fairly. Our empirical experiments reveal an inherent disparity: users with broader interests often receive lower-quality recommendations. To mitigate this, we propose a multi-interest framework that uses multiple (virtual) interest embeddings rather than single ones to represent users. Specifically, the framework consists of stacked multi-interest representation layers, which include an interest embedding generator that derives virtual interests from shared parameters, and a center embedding aggregator that facilitates multi-hop aggregation. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework in achieving better trade-off between fairness and utility across various datasets and backbones.

M2K-VDG: Model-Adaptive Multimodal Knowledge Anchor Enhanced Video-grounded Dialogue Generation

Video-grounded dialogue generation (VDG) requires the system to generate a fluent and accurate answer based on multimodal knowledge. However, the difficulty in multimodal knowledge utilization brings serious hallucinations to VDG models in practice. Although previous works mitigate the hallucination in a variety of ways, they hardly take notice of the importance of the multimodal knowledge anchor answer tokens. In this paper, we reveal via perplexity that different VDG models experience varying hallucinations and exhibit diverse anchor tokens. Based on this observation, we propose M2K-VDG, a model-adaptive multimodal knowledge anchor enhancement framework for hallucination reduction. Furthermore, we introduce the counterfactual effect for more accurate anchor token detection. The experimental results on three popular benchmarks exhibit the superiority of our approach over state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing hallucinations.

LVCHAT: Facilitating Long Video Comprehension

Enabling large language models (LLMs) to read videos is vital for multimodal LLMs. Existing works show promise on short videos whereas long video (longer than e.g.~1 minute) comprehension remains challenging. The major problem lies in the over-compression of videos, i.e., the encoded video representations are not enough to represent the whole video. To address this issue, we propose Long Video Chat (LVChat), where Frame-Scalable Encoding (FSE) is introduced to dynamically adjust the number of embeddings in alignment with the duration of the video to ensure long videos are not overly compressed into a few embeddings. To deal with long videos whose length is beyond videos seen during training, we propose Interleaved Frame Encoding (IFE), repeating positional embedding and interleaving multiple groups of videos to enable long video input, avoiding performance degradation due to overly long videos. Experimental results show that LVChat significantly outperforms existing methods by up to 27\% in accuracy on long-video QA datasets and long-video captioning benchmarks. Our code is published at https://github.com/wangyu-ustc/LVChat.

Leveraging Opposite Gender Interaction Ratio as a Path towards Fairness in Online Dating Recommendations Based on User Sexual Orientation

Online dating platforms have gained widespread popularity as a means for individuals to seek potential romantic relationships. While recommender systems have been designed to improve the user experience in dating platforms by providing personalized recommendations, increasing concerns about fairness have encouraged the development of fairness-aware recommender systems from various perspectives (e.g., gender and race). However, sexual orientation, which plays a significant role in finding a satisfying relationship, is under-investigated. To fill this crucial gap, we propose a novel metric, Opposite Gender Interaction Ratio (OGIR), as a way to investigate potential unfairness for users with varying preferences towards the opposite gender. We empirically analyze a real online dating dataset and observe existing recommender algorithms could suffer from group unfairness according to OGIR. We further investigate the potential causes for such gaps in recommendation quality, which lead to the challenges of group quantity imbalance and group calibration imbalance. Ultimately, we propose a fair recommender system based on re-weighting and re-ranking strategies to respectively mitigate these associated imbalance challenges. Experimental results demonstrate both strategies improve fairness while their combination achieves the best performance towards maintaining model utility while improving fairness.

DictLLM: Harnessing Key-Value Data Structures with Large Language Models for Enhanced Medical Diagnostics

Structured data offers a sophisticated mechanism for the organization of information. Existing methodologies for the text-serialization of structured data in the context of large language models fail to adequately address the heterogeneity inherent in key-value structured data. These methods are not ideal and frequently result in larger input sizes and poor adaptability to input changes. In this paper, we introduce DictLLM, an innovative framework designed to improve the modeling of key-value structured data, like medical laboratory reports, for generating medical diagnoses. DictLLM integrates three key components: (1) group positional encoding to maintain permutation invariance, (2) hierarchical attention bias to capture the inherent bias in structured data, and (3) an optimal transport alignment layer that aligns the embedding generated by the dictionary encoder with the LLM, thereby producing a sequence of fixed-length virtual tokens. We carry out experiments using various LLM models on a comprehensive real-world medical laboratory report dataset for automatic diagnosis generation, our findings illustrate that DictLLM significantly outperforms established baseline methods and few-shot GPT-4 implementations in terms of both Rouge-L and Knowledge F1 scores. Furthermore, our evaluation of the framework's scalability and robustness, through a series of experiments, underscores its exceptional capability in accurately modeling the complex key-value data structure of medical dictionary data.

Knowledge Graph-based Session Recommendation with Adaptive Propagation

Session-based recommender systems (SBRSs) predict users' next interacted items based on their historical activities. While most SBRSs capture purchasing intentions locally within each session, capturing items' global information across different sessions is crucial in characterizing their general properties. Previous works capture this cross-session information by constructing graphs and incorporating neighbor information. However, this incorporation cannot vary adaptively according to the unique intention of each session, and the constructed graphs consist of only one type of user-item interaction. To address these limitations, we propose knowledge graph-based session recommendation with session-adaptive propagation. Specifically, we build a knowledge graph by connecting items with multi-typed edges to characterize various user-item interactions. Then, we adaptively aggregate items' neighbor information considering user intention within the learned session. Experimental results demonstrate that equipping our constructed knowledge graph and session-adaptive propagation enhances session recommendation backbones by 10%-20%. Moreover, we provide an industrial case study showing our proposed framework achieves 2% performance boost over an existing well-deployed model at The Home Depot e-platform.

Rec-GPT4V: Multimodal Recommendation with Large Vision-Language Models

The development of large vision-language models (LVLMs) offers the potential to address challenges faced by traditional multimodal recommendations thanks to their proficient understanding of static images and textual dynamics. However, the application of LVLMs in this field is still limited due to the following complexities: First, LVLMs lack user preference knowledge as they are trained from vast general datasets. Second, LVLMs suffer setbacks in addressing multiple image dynamics in scenarios involving discrete, noisy, and redundant image sequences. To overcome these issues, we propose the novel reasoning scheme named Rec-GPT4V: Visual-Summary Thought (VST) of leveraging large vision-language models for multimodal recommendation. We utilize user history as in-context user preferences to address the first challenge. Next, we prompt LVLMs to generate item image summaries and utilize image comprehension in natural language space combined with item titles to query the user preferences over candidate items. We conduct comprehensive experiments across four datasets with three LVLMs: GPT4-V, LLaVa-7b, and LLaVa-13b. The numerical results indicate the efficacy of VST.

Dynamical quantum state tomography with time-dependent channels

In this paper, we establish a dynamical quantum state tomography framework. Under this framework, it is feasible to obtain complete knowledge of any unknown state of a $d$-level system via only an arbitrary operator of certain types of IC-POVMs in dimension $d$. We show that under the time-dependent average channel, we can acquire a collection of projective operators that is informationally complete (IC) and thus obtain the corresponding IC-POVMs. We show that under certain condition, it is possible to obtain infinite families of projective operators that are IC, and obtain infinite families of corresponding IC-POVMs; otherwise, the Zauner's conjecture is incorrect. We also show how to simulate a SIC-POVM on any unknown quantum state by using the time-dependent average channel.

High-Dimensional Bayesian Optimization via Semi-Supervised Learning with Optimized Unlabeled Data Sampling

We introduce a novel semi-supervised learning approach, named Teacher-Student Bayesian Optimization ($\texttt{TSBO}$), integrating the teacher-student paradigm into BO to minimize expensive labeled data queries for the first time. $\texttt{TSBO}$ incorporates a teacher model, an unlabeled data sampler, and a student model. The student is trained on unlabeled data locations generated by the sampler, with pseudo labels predicted by the teacher. The interplay between these three components implements a unique selective regularization to the teacher in the form of student feedback. This scheme enables the teacher to predict high-quality pseudo labels, enhancing the generalization of the GP surrogate model in the search space. To fully exploit $\texttt{TSBO}$, we propose two optimized unlabeled data samplers to construct effective student feedback that well aligns with the objective of Bayesian optimization. Furthermore, we quantify and leverage the uncertainty of the teacher-student model for the provision of reliable feedback to the teacher in the presence of risky pseudo-label predictions. $\texttt{TSBO}$ demonstrates significantly improved sample-efficiency in several global optimization tasks under tight labeled data budgets.

Optimize Individualized Energy Delivery for Septic Patients Using Predictive Deep Learning Models: A Real World Study

Background and Objectives: We aim to establish deep learning models to optimize the individualized energy delivery for septic patients. Methods and Study Design: We conducted a study of adult septic patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), collecting 47 indicators for 14 days. After data cleaning and preprocessing, we used stats to explore energy delivery in deceased and surviving patients. We filtered out nutrition-related features and divided the data into three metabolic phases: acute early, acute late, and rehabilitation. Models were built using data before September 2020 and validated on the rest. We then established optimal energy target models for each phase using deep learning. Results: A total of 277 patients and 3115 data were included in this study. The models indicated that the optimal energy targets in the three phases were 900kcal/d, 2300kcal/d, and 2000kcal/d, respectively. Excessive energy intake increased mortality rapidly in the early period of the acute phase. Insufficient energy in the late period of the acute phase significantly raised the mortality of septic patients. For the rehabilitation phase, too much or too little energy delivery both associated with high mortality. Conclusion: Our study established time-series prediction models for septic patients to optimize energy delivery in the ICU. This approach indicated the feasibility of developing nutritional tools for critically ill patients. We recommended permissive underfeeding only in the early acute phase. Later, increased energy intake may improve survival and settle energy debts caused by underfeeding.

All-electrical driving and probing of dressed states in a single spin

The sub-nanometer distance between tip and sample in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) enables the application of very large electric fields with a strength as high as ~ 1 GV/m. This has allowed for efficient electrical driving of Rabi oscillations of a single spin on a surface at a moderate radio-frequency (RF) voltage of the order of tens of millivolts. Here, we demonstrate the creation of dressed states of a single electron spin localized in the STM tunnel junction by using resonant RF driving voltages. The read-out of these dressed states was achieved all-electrical by a weakly coupled probe spin. Our work highlights the strength of the atomic-scale geometry inherent to the STM that facilitates creation and control of dressed states, which are promising for a design of atomically well-defined single spin quantum devices on surfaces.

Systematic Performance Evaluation Framework for LEO Mega-Constellation Satellite Networks

Low Earth orbit (LEO) mega-constellation satellite networks have shown great potential to extend the coverage capability of conventional terrestrial networks. How to systematically define, quantify, and assess the technical performance of LEO mega-constellation satellite networks remains an open issue. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive key performance indicator (KPI) framework for mega-constellation based LEO satellite networks. An efficient LEO constellation oriented performance evaluation methodology is then carefully designed by resorting to the concept of interfering area and spherical geographic cell. We have carried out rigorous system-level simulations and provided numerical results to assess the KPI framework. It can be observed that the achieved area traffic capacity of the reference LEO constellation is around 4 Kbps/km2, with service availability ranging from 0.36 to 0.39. Besides, the average access success probability and handover failure rate is approximate to 96% and 10%, respectively, in the nearest satellite association scheme.

Deep learning and random light structuring ensure robust free-space communications

Having shown early promise, free-space optical communications (FSO) face formidable challenges in the age of information explosion. The ever-growing demand for greater channel communication capacity is one of the challenges. The inter-channel crosstalk, which severely degrades the quality of transmitted information, creates another roadblock in the way of efficient FSO implementation. Here we advance theoretically and realize experimentally a potentially high-capacity FSO protocol that enables high-fidelity transfer of an image, or set of images through a complex environment. In our protocol, we complement random light structuring at the transmitter with a deep learning image classification platform at the receiver. Multiplexing novel, independent, mutually orthogonal degrees of freedom available to structured random light can potentially significantly boost the channel communication capacity of our protocol without introducing any deleterious crosstalk. Specifically, we show how one can multiplex the degrees of freedom associated with the source coherence radius and a spatial position of a beamlet within an array of structured random beams to greatly enhance the capacity of our communication link. The superb resilience of structured random light to environmental noise, as well as extreme efficiency of deep learning networks at classifying images guarantees high-fidelity image transfer within the framework of our protocol.

Binding-Adaptive Diffusion Models for Structure-Based Drug Design

Structure-based drug design (SBDD) aims to generate 3D ligand molecules that bind to specific protein targets. Existing 3D deep generative models including diffusion models have shown great promise for SBDD. However, it is complex to capture the essential protein-ligand interactions exactly in 3D space for molecular generation. To address this problem, we propose a novel framework, namely Binding-Adaptive Diffusion Models (BindDM). In BindDM, we adaptively extract subcomplex, the essential part of binding sites responsible for protein-ligand interactions. Then the selected protein-ligand subcomplex is processed with SE(3)-equivariant neural networks, and transmitted back to each atom of the complex for augmenting the target-aware 3D molecule diffusion generation with binding interaction information. We iterate this hierarchical complex-subcomplex process with cross-hierarchy interaction node for adequately fusing global binding context between the complex and its corresponding subcomplex. Empirical studies on the CrossDocked2020 dataset show BindDM can generate molecules with more realistic 3D structures and higher binding affinities towards the protein targets, with up to -5.92 Avg. Vina Score, while maintaining proper molecular properties. Our code is available at https://github.com/YangLing0818/BindDM

UniVision: A Unified Framework for Vision-Centric 3D Perception

The past few years have witnessed the rapid development of vision-centric 3D perception in autonomous driving. Although the 3D perception models share many structural and conceptual similarities, there still exist gaps in their feature representations, data formats, and objectives, posing challenges for unified and efficient 3D perception framework design. In this paper, we present UniVision, a simple and efficient framework that unifies two major tasks in vision-centric 3D perception, \ie, occupancy prediction and object detection. Specifically, we propose an explicit-implicit view transform module for complementary 2D-3D feature transformation. We propose a local-global feature extraction and fusion module for efficient and adaptive voxel and BEV feature extraction, enhancement, and interaction. Further, we propose a joint occupancy-detection data augmentation strategy and a progressive loss weight adjustment strategy which enables the efficiency and stability of the multi-task framework training. We conduct extensive experiments for different perception tasks on four public benchmarks, including nuScenes LiDAR segmentation, nuScenes detection, OpenOccupancy, and Occ3D. UniVision achieves state-of-the-art results with +1.5 mIoU, +1.8 NDS, +1.5 mIoU, and +1.8 mIoU gains on each benchmark, respectively. We believe that the UniVision framework can serve as a high-performance baseline for the unified vision-centric 3D perception task.
