High Precision Determination of the Planck Constant by Modern Photoemission Spectroscopy

The Planck constant, with its mathematical symbol $h$, is a fundamental constant in quantum mechanics that is associated with the quantization of light and matter. It is also of fundamental importance to metrology, such as the definition of ohm and volt, and the latest definition of kilogram. One of the first measurements to determine the Planck constant is based on the photoelectric effect, however, the values thus obtained so far have exhibited a large uncertainty. The accepted value of the Planck constant, 6.62607015$\times$10$^{-34}$ J$\cdot$s, is obtained from one of the most precise methods, the Kibble balance, which involves quantum Hall effect, Josephson effect and the use of the International Prototype of the Kilogram (IPK) or its copies. Here we present a precise determination of the Planck constant by modern photoemission spectroscopy technique. Through the direct use of the Einstein's photoelectric equation, the Planck constant is determined by measuring accurately the energy position of the gold Fermi level using light sources with various photon wavelengths. The precision of the measured Planck constant, 6.62610(13)$\times$10$^{-34}$ J$\cdot$s, is four to five orders of magnitude improved from the previous photoelectric effect measurements. It has rendered photoemission method to become one of the most accurate methods in determining the Planck constant. We propose that this direct method of photoemission spectroscopy has advantages and a potential to further increase its measurement precision of the Planck constant to be comparable to the most accurate methods that are available at present.

Evolution of Incommensurate Superstructure and Electronic Structure with Pb Substitution in (Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_{x}$)Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ Superconductors

High-quality Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_{x}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals have been successfully grown by the traveling solvent floating zone technique with a wide range of Pb substitution ($x=0-0.8$). The samples are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and measured by high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with different photon energies. A systematic evolution of the electronic structure and superstructure with Pb substitution has been revealed for the first time. The superstructure shows a significant change with Pb substitution and the incommensurate modulation vector ($\textbf{Q}$) decreases with increasing Pb substitution. In the meantime, the superstructure intensity from ARPES measurements also decreases dramatically with increasing Pb concentration. The superstructure in Bi2212 can be effectively suppressed by Pb substitution and it nearly disappears with a Pb substitution of $x=0.8$. We also find that the superstructure bands in ARPES measurements depend sensitively on the photon energy of lasers used; they can become even stronger than the main band when using a laser photon energy of 10.897 eV. These results provide important information on the origin of the incommensurate superstructure and its control and suppression in bismuth-based high temperature superconductors.

Matching Article Pairs with Graphical Decomposition and Convolutions

Identifying the relationship between two articles, e.g., whether two articles published from different sources describe the same breaking news, is critical to many document understanding tasks. Existing approaches for modeling and matching sentence pairs do not perform well in matching longer documents, which embody more complex interactions between the enclosed entities than a sentence does. To model article pairs, we propose the Concept Interaction Graph to represent an article as a graph of concepts. We then match a pair of articles by comparing the sentences that enclose the same concept vertex through a series of encoding techniques, and aggregate the matching signals through a graph convolutional network. To facilitate the evaluation of long article matching, we have created two datasets, each consisting of about 30K pairs of breaking news articles covering diverse topics in the open domain. Extensive evaluations of the proposed methods on the two datasets demonstrate significant improvements over a wide range of state-of-the-art methods for natural language matching.

A User-Centered Concept Mining System for Query and Document Understanding at Tencent

Concepts embody the knowledge of the world and facilitate the cognitive processes of human beings. Mining concepts from web documents and constructing the corresponding taxonomy are core research problems in text understanding and support many downstream tasks such as query analysis, knowledge base construction, recommendation, and search. However, we argue that most prior studies extract formal and overly general concepts from Wikipedia or static web pages, which are not representing the user perspective. In this paper, we describe our experience of implementing and deploying ConcepT in Tencent QQ Browser. It discovers user-centered concepts at the right granularity conforming to user interests, by mining a large amount of user queries and interactive search click logs. The extracted concepts have the proper granularity, are consistent with user language styles and are dynamically updated. We further present our techniques to tag documents with user-centered concepts and to construct a topic-concept-instance taxonomy, which has helped to improve search as well as news feeds recommendation in Tencent QQ Browser. We performed extensive offline evaluation to demonstrate that our approach could extract concepts of higher quality compared to several other existing methods. Our system has been deployed in Tencent QQ Browser. Results from online A/B testing involving a large number of real users suggest that the Impression Efficiency of feeds users increased by 6.01% after incorporating the user-centered concepts into the recommendation framework of Tencent QQ Browser.

Demonstration of Adiabatic Variational Quantum Computing with a Superconducting Quantum Coprocessor

Adiabatic quantum computing enables the preparation of many-body ground states. This is key for applications in chemistry, materials science, and beyond. Realisation poses major experimental challenges: Direct analog implementation requires complex Hamiltonian engineering, while the digitised version needs deep quantum gate circuits. To bypass these obstacles, we suggest an adiabatic variational hybrid algorithm, which employs short quantum circuits and provides a systematic quantum adiabatic optimisation of the circuit parameters. The quantum adiabatic theorem promises not only the ground state but also that the excited eigenstates can be found. We report the first experimental demonstration that many-body eigenstates can be efficiently prepared by an adiabatic variational algorithm assisted with a multi-qubit superconducting coprocessor. We track the real-time evolution of the ground and exited states of transverse-field Ising spins with a fidelity up that can reach about 99%.

Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9/Y0.16Zr0.84O1.92 nanocomposite thin films for low temperature ionic conductivity

Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9/Y0.16Zr0.84O1.92 (GDC/YSZ) nanocomposite is synthesized by a novel hybrid chemical route, where colloidal crystalline GDC nanoparticles from continuous hydrothermal synthesis are dispersed into a metalorganic YSZ matrix precursor. The result is a mixture of metal oxides in which GDC nanoparticles are finely distributed in a continuous metalorganic polymeric matrix to be crystallized after calcination. The GDC nanoparticles reduce the temperature necessary to obtain crystalline YSZ, which is already formed at 400 °C. The nanocomposite reveals structural stability up to 800 °C when treated in both air and reducing atmosphere, showing the onset of diffusion below 1000 °C. The diffusional processes are largely dependent on the nanometric grain size, with Zr4+ diffusing abruptly towards GDC in air at 1000 °C and GDC/YSZ interdiffusion being hindered in reducing environment despite the onset temperature of 900 °C. The nanocomposite precursor is an inkjet-printable reactive water-based material, suitable for the deposition of thin films with a thickness below 100 nm after calcination at 750 °C. The crystal structure of the film reveals no interaction between GDC and YSZ but a microstrain (0.3% tensile strain for YSZ). The thin film microstructure shows a compact layer with 94% density. The nanocomposite shows high oxygen ionic conductivity at low temperatures (> 5 * 10-3 S cm-1 at 500 °C), low activation energy (0.55 eV), and dominant oxygen ionic conductivity even in reducing conditions (pO2 < 10-25 atm). We show that these properties arise from the large interface between the components of the composite, due to the embedding of the GDC nanoparticles in the YSZ matrix, while ZrO-CeO intermixing can be avoided and no n-type conductivity is observed even at low oxygen activities and high temperatures.

Insulating Parent Phase and Distinct Doping Evolution to Superconductivity in Single-Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Films

The single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 (FeSe/STO) films have attracted much attention because of their simple crystal structure, distinct electronic structure and record high superconducting transition temperature (Tc). The origin of the dramatic Tc enhancement in single-layer FeSe/STO films and the dichotomy of superconductivity between single-layer and multiple-layer FeSe/STO films are still under debate. Here we report a comprehensive high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements on the electronic structure evolution with doping in single-layer and multiple-layer FeSe/STO films. We find that the single-layer FeSe/STO films have a distinct parent phase and a route of doping evolution to superconductivity that are fundamentally different from multiple-layer FeSe/STO films. The parent phase of the single-layer FeSe/STO films is insulating, and its doping evolution is very similar to that of doping a Mott insulator in cuprate superconductors. In multiple-layer FeSe/STO films, high-Tc superconductivity occurs by suppressing the nematic order in the parent compound with electron doping. The single-layer FeSe/STO films represent the first clear case in the iron-based superconductors that the parent compound is an insulator. Our observations of the unique parent state and doping evolution in the single-layer FeSe/STO films provide key insight in understanding its record high-Tc superconductivity. They also provide a new route of realizing superconductivity in iron-based superconductors that is common in high temperature cuprate superconductors.

Identification of a Large Amount of Excess Fe in Superconducting Single-Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Films

The single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates have attracted much attention because of its record high superconducting critical temperature (Tc). It is usually believed that the composition of the epitaxially grown single-layer FeSe/STO films is stoichiometric, i.e., the ratio of Fe and Se is 1:1. Here we report the identification of a large amount of excess Fe in the superconducting single-layer FeSe/STO films. By depositing Se onto the superconducting single-layer FeSe/STO films, we find by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) the formation of the second-layer FeSe islands on the top of the first layer during the annealing process at a surprisingly low temperature ($\sim$150°C) which is much lower than the usual growth temperature ($\sim$490°C). This observation is used to detect excess Fe and estimate its quantity in the single-layer FeSe/STO films. The amount of excess Fe detected is at least 20% that is surprisingly high for the superconducting single-layer FeSe/STO films. The discovery of such a large amount of excess Fe should be taken into account in understanding the high-Tc superconductivity and points to a likely route to further enhance Tc in the superconducting single-layer FeSe/STO films.

Continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis of Gd-doped CeO2 (GDC) nanoparticles for inkjet printing of SOFC electrolytes

GdxCe1-xO2-d (GDC) nanoparticles were synthesized, using continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis. By varying the synthesis conditions, particle size and morphology could be tailored. Here, particle sizes between 6 and 40 nm with polyhedral or octahedral shape could be obtained. Gd0.2Ce0.8O2-d nanoparticles were further processed into inks for inkjet printing. Despite the small particle size/large surface area, inks with excellent printing behavior were formulated. For proof-of-concept, thin GDC layers were printed on a) green NiO-GDC substrates, and on b) presintered NiO-YSZ substrates. While no dense layers could be obtained on the green NiO-GDC substrates, GDC nanoparticles printed on NiO-YSZ substrates formed a dense continuous layer after firing.

Genuine 12-qubit entanglement on a superconducting quantum processor

We report the preparation and verification of a genuine 12-qubit entanglement in a superconducting processor. The processor that we designed and fabricated has qubits lying on a 1D chain with relaxation times ranging from 29.6 to 54.6 $μ$s. The fidelity of the 12-qubit entanglement was measured to be above $0.5544\pm0.0025$, exceeding the genuine multipartite entanglement threshold by 21 statistical standard deviations. Our entangling circuit to generate linear cluster states is depth-invariant in the number of qubits and uses single- and double-qubit gates instead of collective interactions. Our results are a substantial step towards large-scale random circuit sampling and scalable measurement-based quantum computing.

Multiresolution Graph Attention Networks for Relevance Matching

A large number of deep learning models have been proposed for the text matching problem, which is at the core of various typical natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, existing deep models are mainly designed for the semantic matching between a pair of short texts, such as paraphrase identification and question answering, and do not perform well on the task of relevance matching between short-long text pairs. This is partially due to the fact that the essential characteristics of short-long text matching have not been well considered in these deep models. More specifically, these methods fail to handle extreme length discrepancy between text pieces and neither can they fully characterize the underlying structural information in long text documents. In this paper, we are especially interested in relevance matching between a piece of short text and a long document, which is critical to problems like query-document matching in information retrieval and web searching. To extract the structural information of documents, an undirected graph is constructed, with each vertex representing a keyword and the weight of an edge indicating the degree of interaction between keywords. Based on the keyword graph, we further propose a Multiresolution Graph Attention Network to learn multi-layered representations of vertices through a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), and then match the short text snippet with the graphical representation of the document with the attention mechanisms applied over each layer of the GCN. Experimental results on two datasets demonstrate that our graph approach outperforms other state-of-the-art deep matching models.

Learning to Generate Questions by Learning What not to Generate

Automatic question generation is an important technique that can improve the training of question answering, help chatbots to start or continue a conversation with humans, and provide assessment materials for educational purposes. Existing neural question generation models are not sufficient mainly due to their inability to properly model the process of how each word in the question is selected, i.e., whether repeating the given passage or being generated from a vocabulary. In this paper, we propose our Clue Guided Copy Network for Question Generation (CGC-QG), which is a sequence-to-sequence generative model with copying mechanism, yet employing a variety of novel components and techniques to boost the performance of question generation. In CGC-QG, we design a multi-task labeling strategy to identify whether a question word should be copied from the input passage or be generated instead, guiding the model to learn the accurate boundaries between copying and generation. Furthermore, our input passage encoder takes as input, among a diverse range of other features, the prediction made by a clue word predictor, which helps identify whether each word in the input passage is a potential clue to be copied into the target question. The clue word predictor is designed based on a novel application of Graph Convolutional Networks onto a syntactic dependency tree representation of each passage, thus being able to predict clue words only based on their context in the passage and their relative positions to the answer in the tree. We jointly train the clue prediction as well as question generation with multi-task learning and a number of practical strategies to reduce the complexity. Extensive evaluations show that our model significantly improves the performance of question generation and out-performs all previous state-of-the-art neural question generation models by a substantial margin.

TigerGraph: A Native MPP Graph Database

We present TigerGraph, a graph database system built from the ground up to support massively parallel computation of queries and analytics. TigerGraph's high-level query language, GSQL, is designed for compatibility with SQL, while simultaneously allowing NoSQL programmers to continue thinking in Bulk-Synchronous Processing (BSP) terms and reap the benefits of high-level specification. GSQL is sufficiently high-level to allow declarative SQL-style programming, yet sufficiently expressive to concisely specify the sophisticated iterative algorithms required by modern graph analytics and traditionally coded in general-purpose programming languages like C++ and Java. We report very strong scale-up and scale-out performance over a benchmark we published on GitHub for full reproducibility.

Emergence of Superconductivity from Fully Incoherent Normal State in an Iron-Based Superconductor (Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$

In unconventional superconductors, it is generally believed that understanding the physical properties of the normal state is a pre-requisite for understanding the superconductivity mechanism. In conventional superconductors like niobium or lead, the normal state is a Fermi liquid with a well-defined Fermi surface and well-defined quasipartcles along the Fermi surface. Superconductivity is realized in this case by the Fermi surface instability in the superconducting state and the formation and condensation of the electron pairs (Cooper pairing). The high temperature cuprate superconductors, on the other hand, represent another extreme case that superconductivity can be realized in the underdoped region where there is neither well-defined Fermi surface due to the pseudogap formation nor quasiparticles near the antinodal regions in the normal state. Here we report a novel scenario that superconductivity is realized in a system with well-defined Fermi surface but without quasiparticles along the Fermi surface in the normal state. High resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been performed on an optimally-doped iron-based superconductor (Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$. We find that, while sharp superconducting coherence peaks emerge in the superconducting state on the hole-like Fermi surface sheets, no quasiparticle peak is present in the normal state. Its electronic behaviours deviate strongly from a Fermi liquid system. The superconducting gap of such a system exhibits an unusual temperature dependence that it is nearly a constant in the superconducting state and abruptly closes at T$_c$. These observations have provided a new platform to study unconventional superconductivity in a non-Fermi liquid system.

Disappearance of Superconductivity and a Concomitant Lifshitz Transition in Heavily-Overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6 Superconductor Revealed by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

By partially doping Pb to effectively suppress the superstructure in single-layered cuprate Bi2Sr2CuO6+δ(Pb-Bi2201) and annealing them in vacuum or in high pressure oxygen atmosphere, a series of high quality Pb-Bi2201 single crystals are obtained with Tc covering from 17 K to non-supercondcuting in the overdoped region. High resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements are carried out on these samples to investigate the evolution of the Fermi surface topology with doping in the normal state. Clear and complete Fermi surface are observed and quantitatively analyzed in all these overdoped Pb-Bi2201 samples. A Lifshitz transition from hole-like Fermi surface to electron like Fermi surface with increasing doping is observed at a doping level of ~0.35. This transition coincides with the change that the sample undergoes from superconducting to non-superconducting states. Our results reveal the emergence of an electron-like Fermi surface and the existence of a Lifshitz transition in heavily overdoped Bi2201 samples. They provide important information in understanding the connection between the disappearance of superconductivity and the Lifshitz transition in the overdoped region.

Concerning Kelvin waves, the effective Schrödinger equation, physical quantities operators, and the corresponding path-integral formula are obtained. The vortex line-particle mapping may help in understanding particle motion in quantum mechanics.

Secrecy Energy Efficiency Maximization for UAV-Enabled Mobile Relaying

This paper investigates the secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) maximization problem for unmanned aerial vehicle enabled mobile relaying system, where a high-mobility UAV is exploited to assist delivering the confidential information from a ground source to a legitimate ground destination with the direct link blocked, in the presence of a potential eavesdropper. We aim to maximize SEE of the UAV by jointly optimizing the communication scheduling, power allocation, and UAV trajectory over a finite time horizon. The formulated problem is a mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem that is challenging to be solved optimally. To make the problem tractable, we decompose the problem into three subproblems, and propose an efficient iterative algorithm that alternately optimizes the subproblems. In addition, two special cases are considered as benchmarks in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed design significantly improves the SEE of the UAV, as compared to the benchmarks
