CogDPM: Diffusion Probabilistic Models via Cognitive Predictive Coding

Predictive Coding (PC) is a theoretical framework in cognitive science suggesting that the human brain processes cognition through spatiotemporal prediction of the visual world. Existing studies have developed spatiotemporal prediction neural networks based on the PC theory, emulating its two core mechanisms: Correcting predictions from residuals and hierarchical learning. However, these models do not show the enhancement of prediction skills on real-world forecasting tasks and ignore the Precision Weighting mechanism of PC theory. The precision weighting mechanism posits that the brain allocates more attention to signals with lower precision, contributing to the cognitive ability of human brains. This work introduces the Cognitive Diffusion Probabilistic Models (CogDPM), which demonstrate the connection between diffusion probabilistic models and PC theory. CogDPM features a precision estimation method based on the hierarchical sampling capabilities of diffusion models and weight the guidance with precision weights estimated by the inherent property of diffusion models. We experimentally show that the precision weights effectively estimate the data predictability. We apply CogDPM to real-world prediction tasks using the United Kindom precipitation and ERA surface wind datasets. Our results demonstrate that CogDPM outperforms both existing domain-specific operational models and general deep prediction models by providing more proficient forecasting.

NC-SDF: Enhancing Indoor Scene Reconstruction Using Neural SDFs with View-Dependent Normal Compensation

State-of-the-art neural implicit surface representations have achieved impressive results in indoor scene reconstruction by incorporating monocular geometric priors as additional supervision. However, we have observed that multi-view inconsistency between such priors poses a challenge for high-quality reconstructions. In response, we present NC-SDF, a neural signed distance field (SDF) 3D reconstruction framework with view-dependent normal compensation (NC). Specifically, we integrate view-dependent biases in monocular normal priors into the neural implicit representation of the scene. By adaptively learning and correcting the biases, our NC-SDF effectively mitigates the adverse impact of inconsistent supervision, enhancing both the global consistency and local details in the reconstructions. To further refine the details, we introduce an informative pixel sampling strategy to pay more attention to intricate geometry with higher information content. Additionally, we design a hybrid geometry modeling approach to improve the neural implicit representation. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that NC-SDF outperforms existing approaches in terms of reconstruction quality.

Scenario-Adaptive Fine-Grained Personalization Network: Tailoring User Behavior Representation to the Scenario Context

Existing methods often adjust representations adaptively only after aggregating user behavior sequences. This coarse-grained approach to re-weighting the entire user sequence hampers the model's ability to accurately model the user interest migration across different scenarios. To enhance the model's capacity to capture user interests from historical behavior sequences in each scenario, we develop a ranking framework named the Scenario-Adaptive Fine-Grained Personalization Network (SFPNet), which designs a kind of fine-grained method for multi-scenario personalized recommendations. Specifically, SFPNet comprises a series of blocks named as Scenario-Tailoring Block, stacked sequentially. Each block initially deploys a parameter personalization unit to integrate scenario information at a coarse-grained level by redefining fundamental features. Subsequently, we consolidate scenario-adaptively adjusted feature representations to serve as context information. By employing residual connection, we incorporate this context into the representation of each historical behavior, allowing for context-aware fine-grained customization of the behavior representations at the scenario-level, which in turn supports scenario-aware user interest modeling.

AdaOper: Energy-efficient and Responsive Concurrent DNN Inference on Mobile Devices

Deep neural network (DNN) has driven extensive applications in mobile technology. However, for long-running mobile apps like voice assistants or video applications on smartphones, energy efficiency is critical for battery-powered devices. The rise of heterogeneous processors in mobile devices today has introduced new challenges for optimizing energy efficiency. Our key insight is that partitioning computations across different processors for parallelism and speedup doesn't necessarily correlate with energy consumption optimization and may even increase it. To address this, we present AdaOper, an energy-efficient concurrent DNN inference system. It optimizes energy efficiency on mobile heterogeneous processors while maintaining responsiveness. AdaOper includes a runtime energy profiler that dynamically adjusts operator partitioning to optimize energy efficiency based on dynamic device conditions. We conduct preliminary experiments, which show that AdaOper reduces energy consumption by 16.88% compared to the existing concurrent method while ensuring real-time performance.

Multi-Task Learning in Natural Language Processing: An Overview

Deep learning approaches have achieved great success in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, directly training deep neural models often suffer from overfitting and data scarcity problems that are pervasive in NLP tasks. In recent years, Multi-Task Learning (MTL), which can leverage useful information of related tasks to achieve simultaneous performance improvement on these tasks, has been used to handle these problems. In this paper, we give an overview of the use of MTL in NLP tasks. We first review MTL architectures used in NLP tasks and categorize them into four classes, including parallel architecture, hierarchical architecture, modular architecture, and generative adversarial architecture. Then we present optimization techniques on loss construction, gradient regularization, data sampling, and task scheduling to properly train a multi-task model. After presenting applications of MTL in a variety of NLP tasks, we introduce some benchmark datasets. Finally, we make a conclusion and discuss several possible research directions in this field.

Transition between heavy-fermion strange metal and quantum spin liquid in a 4d-electron trimer lattice

We present experimental evidence that a heavy Fermi surface consisting of itinerant, charge-neutral spinons underpins both heavy-fermion-strange-metal (without f electrons) and quantum-spin-liquid states in the 4d-electron trimer lattice, Ba4Nb1-xRu3+xO12 (|x| < 0.20). These two exotic states both exhibit an extraordinarily large entropy, a linear heat capacity extending into the milli-Kelvin regime, a linear thermal conductivity at low temperatures, and separation of charges and spins. Furthermore, the insulating spin liquid is a much better thermal conductor than the heavy-fermion-strange-metal that separately is observed to strongly violate the Wiedemann-Franz law. We propose that at the heart of this 4d system is a universal, heavy spinon Fermi surface that provides a unified framework for explaining the exotic phenomena observed throughout the entire series. The control of such exotic ground states provided by variable Nb concentration offers a new paradigm for studies of correlated quantum matter.

3D-Mirrorcle: Bridging the Virtual and Real through Depth Alignment in AR Mirror Systems

Smart mirrors have emerged as a new form of augmented reality (AR) interface for home environments. However, due to the parallax in human vision, one major challenge hindering their development is the depth misalignment between the 3D mirror reflection and the 2D screen display. This misalignment causes the display content to appear as if it is floating above the mirror, thereby disrupting the seamless integration of the two components and impacting the overall quality and functionality of the mirror. In this study, we introduce 3D-Mirrorcle, an innovative augmented reality (AR) mirror system that effectively addresses the issue of depth disparity through a hardware-software co-design on a lenticular grating setup. With our implemented real-time position adjustment and depth adaptation algorithms, the screen display can be dynamically aligned to the user's depth perception for a highly realistic and engaging experience. Our method has been validated through a prototype and hands-on user experiments that engaged 36 participants, and the results show significant improvements in terms of accuracy (24.72% $\uparrow$), immersion(31.4% $\uparrow$), and user satisfaction (44.4% $\uparrow$) compared to the existing works.

Modeling Seismic Wave Propagation in TTI Media Using Residual Perfectly Matched Layer

The perfectly matched layer(PML) is commonly used in wave propagation, radiation and diffraction problems in unbounded space domains. A new implementation scheme of PML is presented. The PML formulation is pre-defined, and the wave field absorption is achieved by calculating the residual between the PML equation and original equation through backward induction. Two forms of the Residual PML (RPML) are presented: RPML-1, which defines the residual as the difference between the original and PML equations, and RPML-2, which defines the residual as the difference between the original and PML wave fields. RPML-2 is the simplest and easiest to extend, as it does not alter the original equation and only has one time partial derivative term in the residual equation. Additionally, since the residual equation has no spatial partial derivative term, high-order spatial difference discretization is unnecessary, which results in higher accuracy and computational efficiency. Furthermore, simulating a wave field in TTI media requires a high absorption effect and stability of PML. The numerical simulation demonstrates that RPML-2 provides better absorption performance and stability compared to ADEPML and NPML. To meet the needs of wave field simulation for complex media, a multiaxial complex frequency shifted RPML-2 (MCFS-RPML-2) is introduced, which employs double damping profiles and complex frequency shift technology to achieve higher stability and absorption effects.

UAlign: Pushing the Limit of Template-free Retrosynthesis Prediction with Unsupervised SMILES Alignment

Motivation: Retrosynthesis planning poses a formidable challenge in the organic chemical industry. Single-step retrosynthesis prediction, a crucial step in the planning process, has witnessed a surge in interest in recent years due to advancements in AI for science. Various deep learning-based methods have been proposed for this task in recent years, incorporating diverse levels of additional chemical knowledge dependency. Results: This paper introduces UAlign, a template-free graph-to-sequence pipeline for retrosynthesis prediction. By combining graph neural networks and Transformers, our method can more effectively leverage the inherent graph structure of molecules. Based on the fact that the majority of molecule structures remain unchanged during a chemical reaction, we propose a simple yet effective SMILES alignment technique to facilitate the reuse of unchanged structures for reactant generation. Extensive experiments show that our method substantially outperforms state-of-the-art template-free and semi-template-based approaches. Importantly, our template-free method achieves effectiveness comparable to, or even surpasses, established powerful template-based methods. Scientific contribution: We present a novel graph-to-sequence template-free retrosynthesis prediction pipeline that overcomes the limitations of Transformer-based methods in molecular representation learning and insufficient utilization of chemical information. We propose an unsupervised learning mechanism for establishing product-atom correspondence with reactant SMILES tokens, achieving even better results than supervised SMILES alignment methods. Extensive experiments demonstrate that UAlign significantly outperforms state-of-the-art template-free methods and rivals or surpasses template-based approaches, with up to 5\% (top-5) and 5.4\% (top-10) increased accuracy over the strongest baseline.

A Graph Transformer-Driven Approach for Network Robustness Learning

Learning and analysis of network robustness, including controllability robustness and connectivity robustness, is critical for various networked systems against attacks. Traditionally, network robustness is determined by attack simulations, which is very time-consuming and even incapable for large-scale networks. Network Robustness Learning, which is dedicated to learning network robustness with high precision and high speed, provides a powerful tool to analyze network robustness by replacing simulations. In this paper, a novel versatile and unified robustness learning approach via graph transformer (NRL-GT) is proposed, which accomplishes the task of controllability robustness learning and connectivity robustness learning from multiple aspects including robustness curve learning, overall robustness learning, and synthetic network classification. Numerous experiments show that: 1) NRL-GT is a unified learning framework for controllability robustness and connectivity robustness, demonstrating a strong generalization ability to ensure high precision when training and test sets are distributed differently; 2) Compared to the cutting-edge methods, NRL-GT can simultaneously perform network robustness learning from multiple aspects and obtains superior results in less time. NRL-GT is also able to deal with complex networks of different size with low learning error and high efficiency; 3) It is worth mentioning that the backbone of NRL-GT can serve as a transferable feature learning module for complex networks of different size and different downstream tasks.

A Distributed Scalable Cross-chain State Channel Scheme Based on Recursive State Synchronization

As cross-chain technology continues to advance, the scale of cross-chain transactions is experiencing significant expansion. To improve scalability, researchers have turned to the study of cross-chain state channels. However, most of the existing schemes rely on trusted parties to support channel operations. To address this issue, we present Interpipe: a distributed cross-chain state channel scheme. Specifically, we propose a real-time cross-chain synchronization scheme to ensure consistent operations between two blockchains to a cross-chain state channel. Moreover, we propose a batch transaction proof scheme based on recursive SNARK to meet the cross-chain verification needs of large-scale users. Based on the above designs, Interpipe offers protocols for opening, updating, closing, and disputing operations to cross-chain state channels. Security analysis shows that Interpipe has consistency and resistance, and experimental results demonstrate that a cross-chain state channel can be nearly as efficient as an existing intra-chain state channel.

Multimodal Road Network Generation Based on Large Language Model

With the increasing popularity of ChatGPT, large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated their capabilities in communication and reasoning, promising for transportation sector intelligentization. However, they still face challenges in domain-specific knowledge. This paper aims to leverage LLMs' reasoning and recognition abilities to replace traditional user interfaces and create an "intelligent operating system" for transportation simulation software, exploring their potential with transportation modeling and simulation. We introduce Network Generation AI (NGAI), integrating LLMs with road network modeling plugins, validated through experiments for accuracy and robustness. NGAI's effective use has reduced modeling costs, revolutionized transportation simulations, optimized user steps, and proposed a novel approach for LLM integration in the transportation field.

Rendering-Enhanced Automatic Image-to-Point Cloud Registration for Roadside Scenes

Prior point cloud provides 3D environmental context, which enhances the capabilities of monocular camera in downstream vision tasks, such as 3D object detection, via data fusion. However, the absence of accurate and automated registration methods for estimating camera extrinsic parameters in roadside scene point clouds notably constrains the potential applications of roadside cameras. This paper proposes a novel approach for the automatic registration between prior point clouds and images from roadside scenes. The main idea involves rendering photorealistic grayscale views taken at specific perspectives from the prior point cloud with the help of their features like RGB or intensity values. These generated views can reduce the modality differences between images and prior point clouds, thereby improve the robustness and accuracy of the registration results. Particularly, we specify an efficient algorithm, named neighbor rendering, for the rendering process. Then we introduce a method for automatically estimating the initial guess using only rough guesses of camera's position. At last, we propose a procedure for iteratively refining the extrinsic parameters by minimizing the reprojection error for line features extracted from both generated and camera images using Segment Anything Model (SAM). We assess our method using a self-collected dataset, comprising eight cameras strategically positioned throughout the university campus. Experiments demonstrate our method's capability to automatically align prior point cloud with roadside camera image, achieving a rotation accuracy of 0.202 degrees and a translation precision of 0.079m. Furthermore, we validate our approach's effectiveness in visual applications by substantially improving monocular 3D object detection performance.

HiPose: Hierarchical Binary Surface Encoding and Correspondence Pruning for RGB-D 6DoF Object Pose Estimation

In this work, we present a novel dense-correspondence method for 6DoF object pose estimation from a single RGB-D image. While many existing data-driven methods achieve impressive performance, they tend to be time-consuming due to their reliance on rendering-based refinement approaches. To circumvent this limitation, we present HiPose, which establishes 3D-3D correspondences in a coarse-to-fine manner with a hierarchical binary surface encoding. Unlike previous dense-correspondence methods, we estimate the correspondence surface by employing point-to-surface matching and iteratively constricting the surface until it becomes a correspondence point while gradually removing outliers. Extensive experiments on public benchmarks LM-O, YCB-V, and T-Less demonstrate that our method surpasses all refinement-free methods and is even on par with expensive refinement-based approaches. Crucially, our approach is computationally efficient and enables real-time critical applications with high accuracy requirements.

Pressure-dependent adhesion between solid-supported PC-lipid bilayers and vesicles under electric fields

Fusion of lipid bilayers in membranes is important in processes from vesicle-cell interactions (as in drug delivery) to exosome-cell signaling, while transient transmembrane electric fields are known to occur spontaneously. Two contacting phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipid membranes are known to fuse into one under external electric fields, suggesting that the interaction between them is modified by the field as they approach, prior to the fusion event. Here we measure directly the adhesion energy between dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and between distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) surface layers attached to solid substrates both without and with a transmembrane electric field. We find a marked pressure-dependent adhesion behavior in the electric field, which we attribute to fusion intermediates that are formed, shedding new light on membrane electro-fusion.

Self-Sensing Feedback Control of an Electrohydraulic Robotic Shoulder

The human shoulder, with its glenohumeral joint, tendons, ligaments, and muscles, allows for the execution of complex tasks with precision and efficiency. However, current robotic shoulder designs lack the compliance and compactness inherent in their biological counterparts. A major limitation of these designs is their reliance on external sensors like rotary encoders, which restrict mechanical joint design and introduce bulk to the system. To address this constraint, we present a bio-inspired antagonistic robotic shoulder with two degrees of freedom powered by self-sensing hydraulically amplified self-healing electrostatic actuators. Our artificial muscle design decouples the high-voltage electrostatic actuation from the pair of low-voltage self-sensing electrodes. This approach allows for proprioceptive feedback control of trajectories in the task space while eliminating the necessity for any additional sensors. We assess the platform's efficacy by comparing it to a feedback control based on position data provided by a motion capture system. The study demonstrates closed-loop controllable robotic manipulators based on an inherent self-sensing capability of electrohydraulic actuators. The proposed architecture can serve as a basis for complex musculoskeletal joint arrangements.
