Tiny Obstacle Discovery by Occlusion-Aware Multilayer Regression

Edges are the fundamental visual element for discovering tiny obstacles using a monocular camera. Nevertheless, tiny obstacles often have weak and inconsistent edge cues due to various properties such as small size and similar appearance to the free space, making it hard to capture them. ...

Streaming from the Air: Enabling Drone-sourced Video Streaming Applications on 5G Open-RAN Architectures

Enabling high data-rate uplink cellular connectivity for drones is a challenging problem, since a flying drone has a higher likelihood of having line-of-sight propagation to base stations that terrestrial UEs normally do not have line-of-sight to. This may result in uplink inter-cell interference and uplink performance degradation for the neighboring ground UEs when drones transmit at high data-rates (e.g., video streaming). We address this problem from a cellular operator's standpoint to support drone-sourced video streaming of a point of interest. We propose a low-complexity, closed-loop control system for Open-RAN architectures that jointly optimizes the drone's location in space and its transmission directionality to support video streaming and minimize its uplink interference impact on the network. We prototype and experimentally evaluate the proposed control system on a dedicated outdoor multi-cell RAN testbed, which is the first measurement campaign of its kind. Furthermore, we perform a large-scale simulation assessment of the proposed control system using the actual cell deployment topologies and cell load profiles of a major US cellular carrier. The proposed Open-RAN control scheme achieves an average 19% network capacity gain over traditional BS-constrained control solutions and satisfies the application data-rate requirements of the drone (e.g., to stream an HD video).

Silting reduction in extriangulated categories

Presilting and silting subcategories in extriangulated categories were introduced by Adachi and Tsukamoto recently. In this paper, we prove that the Gabriel-Zisman localization $\mathcal B/({\rm thick}\mathcal W)$ of an extriangulated category $\mathcal B$ with respect to a presilting subcategory $\mathcal W$ satisfying certain condition can be realized as a subfactor category of $\mathcal B$. This generalizes the result by Iyama-Yang for silting reduction on triangulated categories. Then we discuss the relation between silting subcategories and tilting subcategories in extriangulated categories, this gives us a kind of important examples of our results. In particular, for a finite dimensional Gorenstein algebra, we get the relative version of the description of the singularity category due to Happel and Chen-Zhang by this reduction.

Stability of even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in systems with strong Landau-level mixing

Mixing of Landau levels has been understood to be essential in governing the nature of the ground state for the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall effect. The incompressibility of the ground state at filling factor $5/2$ in the strong Landau-level-mixed systems, such as the ZnO quantum well, is not always stable. Here we present an approach to generally deal with this kind of systems and satisfactorily explain the recent experiments [Falson \textit{et al}. Sci. Adv. \textbf{4}, eaat8742 (2018)] by implementing the screening plus the thickness effect. Further, the phase diagrams of the incompressibility of the ground state indicate that the phase transitions can be explicitly extracted by observing the lowest gap of the collective modes when the magnetic field and the width of the quantum well are tuned. We also predict the incompressibility of the two-dimensional electron gas in higher Landau levels in another strong Landau-level-mixed system, viz., the black phosphorene, by considering the screening effect where the relevant even-denominator fractional quantum Hall effects can possibly be observed.

Dense Semantic Contrast for Self-Supervised Visual Representation Learning

Self-supervised representation learning for visual pre-training has achieved remarkable success with sample (instance or pixel) discrimination and semantics discovery of instance, whereas there still exists a non-negligible gap between pre-trained model and downstream dense prediction tasks. Concretely, these downstream tasks require more accurate representation, in other words, the pixels from the same object must belong to a shared semantic category, which is lacking in the previous methods. In this work, we present Dense Semantic Contrast (DSC) for modeling semantic category decision boundaries at a dense level to meet the requirement of these tasks. Furthermore, we propose a dense cross-image semantic contrastive learning framework for multi-granularity representation learning. Specially, we explicitly explore the semantic structure of the dataset by mining relations among pixels from different perspectives. For intra-image relation modeling, we discover pixel neighbors from multiple views. And for inter-image relations, we enforce pixel representation from the same semantic class to be more similar than the representation from different classes in one mini-batch. Experimental results show that our DSC model outperforms state-of-the-art methods when transferring to downstream dense prediction tasks, including object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation. Code will be made available.

PIMNet: A Parallel, Iterative and Mimicking Network for Scene Text Recognition

Nowadays, scene text recognition has attracted more and more attention due to its various applications. Most state-of-the-art methods adopt an encoder-decoder framework with attention mechanism, which generates text autoregressively from left to right. Despite the convincing performance, the speed is limited because of the one-by-one decoding strategy. As opposed to autoregressive models, non-autoregressive models predict the results in parallel with a much shorter inference time, but the accuracy falls behind the autoregressive counterpart considerably. In this paper, we propose a Parallel, Iterative and Mimicking Network (PIMNet) to balance accuracy and efficiency. Specifically, PIMNet adopts a parallel attention mechanism to predict the text faster and an iterative generation mechanism to make the predictions more accurate. In each iteration, the context information is fully explored. To improve learning of the hidden layer, we exploit the mimicking learning in the training phase, where an additional autoregressive decoder is adopted and the parallel decoder mimics the autoregressive decoder with fitting outputs of the hidden layer. With the shared backbone between the two decoders, the proposed PIMNet can be trained end-to-end without pre-training. During inference, the branch of the autoregressive decoder is removed for a faster speed. Extensive experiments on public benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of PIMNet. Our code will be available at https://github.com/Pay20Y/PIMNet.

Mask is All You Need: Rethinking Mask R-CNN for Dense and Arbitrary-Shaped Scene Text Detection

Due to the large success in object detection and instance segmentation, Mask R-CNN attracts great attention and is widely adopted as a strong baseline for arbitrary-shaped scene text detection and spotting. However, two issues remain to be settled. The first is dense text case, which is easy to be neglected but quite practical. There may exist multiple instances in one proposal, which makes it difficult for the mask head to distinguish different instances and degrades the performance. In this work, we argue that the performance degradation results from the learning confusion issue in the mask head. We propose to use an MLP decoder instead of the "deconv-conv" decoder in the mask head, which alleviates the issue and promotes robustness significantly. And we propose instance-aware mask learning in which the mask head learns to predict the shape of the whole instance rather than classify each pixel to text or non-text. With instance-aware mask learning, the mask branch can learn separated and compact masks. The second is that due to large variations in scale and aspect ratio, RPN needs complicated anchor settings, making it hard to maintain and transfer across different datasets. To settle this issue, we propose an adaptive label assignment in which all instances especially those with extreme aspect ratios are guaranteed to be associated with enough anchors. Equipped with these components, the proposed method named MAYOR achieves state-of-the-art performance on five benchmarks including DAST1500, MSRA-TD500, ICDAR2015, CTW1500, and Total-Text.

Which and Where to Focus: A Simple yet Accurate Framework for Arbitrary-Shaped Nearby Text Detection in Scene Images

Scene text detection has drawn the close attention of researchers. Though many methods have been proposed for horizontal and oriented texts, previous methods may not perform well when dealing with arbitrary-shaped texts such as curved texts. In particular, confusion problem arises in the case of nearby text instances. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective method for accurate arbitrary-shaped nearby scene text detection. Firstly, a One-to-Many Training Scheme (OMTS) is designed to eliminate confusion and enable the proposals to learn more appropriate groundtruths in the case of nearby text instances. Secondly, we propose a Proposal Feature Attention Module (PFAM) to exploit more effective features for each proposal, which can better adapt to arbitrary-shaped text instances. Finally, we propose a baseline that is based on Faster R-CNN and outputs the curve representation directly. Equipped with PFAM and OMTS, the detector can achieve state-of-the-art or competitive performance on several challenging benchmarks.

CSDS: A Fine-Grained Chinese Dataset for Customer Service Dialogue Summarization

Dialogue summarization has drawn much attention recently. Especially in the customer service domain, agents could use dialogue summaries to help boost their works by quickly knowing customer's issues and service progress. These applications require summaries to contain the perspective of a single speaker and have a clear topic flow structure, while neither are available in existing datasets. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel Chinese dataset for Customer Service Dialogue Summarization (CSDS). CSDS improves the abstractive summaries in two aspects: (1) In addition to the overall summary for the whole dialogue, role-oriented summaries are also provided to acquire different speakers' viewpoints. (2) All the summaries sum up each topic separately, thus containing the topic-level structure of the dialogue. We define tasks in CSDS as generating the overall summary and different role-oriented summaries for a given dialogue. Next, we compare various summarization methods on CSDS, and experiment results show that existing methods are prone to generate redundant and incoherent summaries. Besides, the performance becomes much worse when analyzing the performance on role-oriented summaries and topic structures. We hope that this study could benchmark Chinese dialogue summarization and benefit further studies.

Finite presentations for spherical/braid twist groups from decorated marked surfaces

We give a finite presentation for the braid twist group of a decorated surface. If the decorated surface arises from a triangulated marked surface without punctures, we obtain a finite presentation for the spherical twist group of the associated 3-Calabi-Yau triangulated category. The motivation/application is that the result will be used to show that the (principal component of) space of stability conditions on the 3-Calabi-Yau category is simply connected in the sequel.

Augmenting Slot Values and Contexts for Spoken Language Understanding with Pretrained Models

Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) is one essential step in building a dialogue system. Due to the expensive cost of obtaining the labeled data, SLU suffers from the data scarcity problem. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on data augmentation for slot filling task in SLU. To achieve that, we aim at generating more diverse data based on existing data. Specifically, we try to exploit the latent language knowledge from pretrained language models by finetuning them. We propose two strategies for finetuning process: value-based and context-based augmentation. Experimental results on two public SLU datasets have shown that compared with existing data augmentation methods, our proposed method can generate more diverse sentences and significantly improve the performance on SLU.

0.8% Nyquist computational ghost imaging via non-experimental deep learning

We present a framework for computational ghost imaging based on deep learning and customized pink noise speckle patterns. The deep neural network in this work, which can learn the sensing model and enhance image reconstruction quality, is trained merely by simulation. To demonstrate the sub-Nyquist level in our work, the conventional computational ghost imaging results, reconstructed imaging results using white noise and pink noise via deep learning are compared under multiple sampling rates at different noise conditions. We show that the proposed scheme can provide high-quality images with a sampling rate of 0.8% even when the object is outside the training dataset, and it is robust to noisy environments. This method is excellent for various applications, particularly those that require a low sampling rate, fast reconstruction efficiency, or experience strong noise interference.

Topological hybrid semimetal phases and anomalous Hall effects in a three dimensional magnetic topological insulator

In this work, we propose a ferromagnetic Bi$_2$Se$_3$ as a candidate to hold the coexistence of Weyl- and nodal-line semimetal phases, which breaks the time reversal symmetry. We demonstrate that the type-I Weyl semimetal phase, type-I-, type-II- and their hybrid nodal-line semimetal phases can arise by tuning the Zeeman exchange field strength and the Fermi velocity. Their topological responses under U(1) gauge field are also discussed. Our results raise a new way for realizing Weyl and nodal-line semimetals and will be helpful in understanding the topological transport phenomena in three-dimensional material systems.

Observing two-photon subwavelength interference of broadband chaotic light in polarization-selective Michelson interferometer

Differing from the traditional method of achieving subwavelength interference, we have demonstrated the two-photon subwavelength interference effect of broadband chaotic light in a polarization-selective Michelson interferometer with an ultrafast two-photon absorption detector the first time, which is achieved by manipulating two-photon probability amplitudes involved in the interference. In theory, the two-photon polarization coherence matrix and probability amplitudes matrix are combined to develop polarized two-photon interference terms, which explains the experimental results well. In order to make better use of this interferometer to produce the subwavelength effect, we also make a series of error analyses to find out the relationship between the visibility and the degree of polarization error. Our experimental and theoretical results are helpful to understand the two-photon subwavelength interference, which sheds light on the development of the two-photon interference theory of vector light field based on quantum mechanics. These experimental results may help to develop future optical interferometry, optical polarimetry, and subwavelength lithography.

Measurement methods of radial flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Radial flow can be directly extracted from the azimuthal distribution of mean transverse rapidity. We apply the event-plane method and the two-particle correlation method to estimate the anisotropic Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution of mean transverse rapidity. Using the event sample generated by a multiphase transport model with string melting, we show that both methods are effective. For the two-particle correlation method to be reliable, the mean number of particles in an azimuthal bin must be above a certain threshold. Using these two methods, anisotropic radial flow can be estimated in a model-independent way in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Video 3D Sampling for Self-supervised Representation Learning

Most of the existing video self-supervised methods mainly leverage temporal signals of videos, ignoring that the semantics of moving objects and environmental information are all critical for video-related tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised method for video representation learning, referred to as Video 3D Sampling (V3S). In order to sufficiently utilize the information (spatial and temporal) provided in videos, we pre-process a video from three dimensions (width, height, time). As a result, we can leverage the spatial information (the size of objects), temporal information (the direction and magnitude of motions) as our learning target. In our implementation, we combine the sampling of the three dimensions and propose the scale and projection transformations in space and time respectively. The experimental results show that, when applied to action recognition, video retrieval and action similarity labeling, our approach improves the state-of-the-arts with significant margins.

Multi-View Correlation Distillation for Incremental Object Detection

In real applications, new object classes often emerge after the detection model has been trained on a prepared dataset with fixed classes. Due to the storage burden and the privacy of old data, sometimes it is impractical to train the model from scratch with both old and new data. Fine-tuning the old model with only new data will lead to a well-known phenomenon of catastrophic forgetting, which severely degrades the performance of modern object detectors. In this paper, we propose a novel \textbf{M}ulti-\textbf{V}iew \textbf{C}orrelation \textbf{D}istillation (MVCD) based incremental object detection method, which explores the correlations in the feature space of the two-stage object detector (Faster R-CNN). To better transfer the knowledge learned from the old classes and maintain the ability to learn new classes, we design correlation distillation losses from channel-wise, point-wise and instance-wise views to regularize the learning of the incremental model. A new metric named Stability-Plasticity-mAP is proposed to better evaluate both the stability for old classes and the plasticity for new classes in incremental object detection. The extensive experiments conducted on VOC2007 and COCO demonstrate that MVCD can effectively learn to detect objects of new classes and mitigate the problem of catastrophic forgetting.

MMF: Multi-Task Multi-Structure Fusion for Hierarchical Image Classification

Hierarchical classification is significant for complex tasks by providing multi-granular predictions and encouraging better mistakes. As the label structure decides its performance, many existing approaches attempt to construct an excellent label structure for promoting the classification results. In this paper, we consider that different label structures provide a variety of prior knowledge for category recognition, thus fusing them is helpful to achieve better hierarchical classification results. Furthermore, we propose a multi-task multi-structure fusion model to integrate different label structures. It contains two kinds of branches: one is the traditional classification branch to classify the common subclasses, the other is responsible for identifying the heterogeneous superclasses defined by different label structures. Besides the effect of multiple label structures, we also explore the architecture of the deep model for better hierachical classification and adjust the hierarchical evaluation metrics for multiple label structures. Experimental results on CIFAR100 and Car196 show that our method obtains significantly better results than using a flat classifier or a hierarchical classifier with any single label structure.
