Electrothermal control of spin-reorientation transition in Co/Fe_3GaTe_2 heterostructures

Electrical control of magnetic anisotropy in van der Waals (vdWs) magnets is a key step toward reconfigurable two-dimensional spintronics, yet how a conventional metallic ferromagnet competes with a van der Waals magnet across a direct interface has remained largely unexplored. Here we demonstrate reversible thermal and electrothermal control of a spin-reorientation transition in Co/Fe_3GaTe_2 (FGaT) heterostructures. As Joule heating weakens the FGaT anisotropy, the heterostructure switches from an out-of-plane- to an in-plane-dominated state at a reorientation temperature of approximately 311 K, well below the Curie temperature, consistent with an exchange-mediated anisotropy competition between the Co overlayer and FGaT. An electrically driven device shows a closely matching loop evolution within an 80-100 mW power window, reversibly over five measurement cycles, consistent with an electrothermal origin. In a Co-free FGaT device, Kerr microscopy traces the switching to a power-tunable domain nucleation barrier and demonstrates power-thresholded, field-assisted magnetization reversal at a threshold near 15 mW. These results demonstrate electrothermal anisotropy competition as a route to heat-assisted and device-level control of vdWs magnetism.

Trigonal Distortion Driven Ground States in VX3 (X = Br and I)

Transition-metal halides V$X_3$ ($X$ = Br and I) have emerged as promising candidates for two dimensional spintronic and quantum applications due to their layer-dependent magnetism and tunable electronic states. However, experimental insights into their ground state electronic structures remain limited. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of V$X_3$ using high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) combined with ligand field multiplet calculations. The RIXS spectra reveal distinct $dd$ and charge-transfer excitations, allowing precise determination of electronic structure parameters, including the crystal field splitting, trigonal distortion, and Racah parameters. The determined parameters showed clear variation, indicating an increase in covalency from Br to I. The trigonal distortion parameters $\Delta_{D_{3d}}$ were determined to be -0.096 eV in VBr$_3$ and 0.07 eV in VI$_3$, indicating a sign opposition between the two compounds, reflecting good agreement with experimental RIXS data. Cluster model calculations yield a high-spin V$^{3+}$ $(S = 1)$ configuration, with an $e'^2_g$ ground state in VBr$_3$ and an $e'^1_ga^1_{1g}$ ground state in VI$_3$, consistent with trigonal elongation and compression, respectively. Our findings provide the most complete experimental determination of the low energy electronic structure in V$X_3$, offering valuable insights for designing 2D magnetic and spintronic materials based on vanadium halides.

Electronic Energy Scales of Cr$X_3$ ($X$ = Cl, Br, and I) using High-resolution X-ray Scattering

Chromium tri-halides Cr$X_3$ ($X$ = Cl, Br, and I) have recently become a focal point of research due to their intriguing low-temperature,layer-dependent magnetism that can be manipulated by an electric field. This makes them essential candidates for spintronics applications. These magnetic orders are often related to the electronic structure parameters, such as spin-orbit coupling (SOC), Hund's coupling ($J_H$), $p-d$ covalency, and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions. Accurately determining such parameters is paramount for understanding Cr$X_3$ physics. We have used ultra high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy to study Cr$X_3$ across phase transition temperatures. Ligand field multiplet calculations were used to determine the electronic structure parameters by incorporating the crystal field interactions in a distorted octahedral with $C_3$ symmetry. These methods provide the most detailed description of Cr$X_3$ magneto-optical and electronic energetic (terms) to date. For the first time, the crystal field distortion parameters $D\sigma$ and $D\tau$ were calculated, and the energies of $d$ orbitals have been reported. Our RIXS spectroscopic measurements reveal a clear energy separation between spin-allowed quartet states and spin-forbidden doublet states in Cr$X_3$. The role of SOC in Cr $2p$ orbitals for the spin-flip excitations has been demonstrated. The determined 10$Dq$ values are in good agreement with the spectrochemical series, and Racah B follows the Nephelauxetic effect. Such precise measurements offer insights into the energy design of spintronic devices that utilize quantum state tuning within 2D magnetic materials.

Bidirectional magnetization switching of a ferrimagnetic insulator with monochiral molecules

Recent studies have demonstrated that magnetization switching in ferromagnets can be achieved through adsorbing chiral molecules on the surface without the need for current or external magnetic fields, offering a low-power mechanism for applications in spintronic devices. Opposite chirality molecules cause opposite direction reversals of magnetization through the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) mechanism. In this study, we demonstrate bidirectional magnetization switching in thin films of ferrimagnetic insulator TmIG using a single chirality molecule - a Cu metallopolymer of d-leucine. Through UV-VIS circular dichroism and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we determined that switching between different magnetic orientations is associated with interactions of the d-leucine with the two distinct sublattices of the Fe ions in the TmIG, at octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Our study demonstrates the unexpected versatility of the CISS mechanism for magnetization switching in ferrimagnets using single chirality materials, thereby expanding the potential applications of chiral molecule adsorption-induced magnetization flipping.

Unraveling the Mn $L_3$-edge RIXS spectrum of lightly manganese doped Sr$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiment was performed at the Mn $L_3$ edge. A 10 $\%$ Mn-doped Sr$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ compound, where the Mn$^{3+}$ ions are in the 3$d^4$ state, were probed for $dd$ excitations. The dilute doping concentration allows one to treat the dopant Mn$^{3+}$ ions as effectively free in the host ruthenium compound. The local nature of $dd$ RIXS spectroscopy permits one to use a single-site model to simulate the experimental spectra. The simulated spectra reproduces the in-plane [100] experimental RIXS spectrum. We also predict the intensity for the in-plane [110] direction and the out-of-plane spin orientation configuration [001]. Based on our single-ion model we were able to fit the experimental data to obtain the crystal field parameters, the 10Dq value, and the intra-orbital spin-flip energy 2$\mathcal{J}$(or $3J_{H}$, where $J_{H}$ is the Hund's energy) of the Mn$^{3+}$ ion. Utilizing our computed RIXS quantum transition amplitudes between the various $d$ orbitals of the Mn$^{3+}$ ion, the expression for the Kramers-Heisenberg cross section, and a self-consistent fitting procedure we also identify the energy boundaries of the non-spin-flip and spin-flip $dd$ excitations present in the experimental data. From our fitting procedure we obtain $2\mathcal{J} (3J_{H})=2.06$ eV, a value which is in excellent agreement with that computed from the free ion Racah parameters. We also identified the charge transfer boundary. In addition to predicting the microscopic parameters, we find a quantum spin-flip transition in the non-cross ($\sigma_{in}-\sigma_{out}$, $\pi_{in}-\pi_{out}$) x-ray polarization channels of the $dd$ RIXS spectra. A similar transition, was previously predicted to occur in the $\pi-\pi$ channel of the magnon spectrum in the non-collinear non-coplanar Kagome compound composed of Cu$^{2+}$ 3d$^{9}$ ion.

Precise dd excitations and commensurate intersite Coulomb interactions in the dissimilar cuprate YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x) and La_(2-x)Sr_xCuO_4

Using high-resolution extreme ultraviolet resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (EUVRIXS) spectroscopy at Cu M-edge, we observed the doping dependent spectral shifts of inter-orbital (dd) excitations of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x) and La_(2-x)Sr_xCuO_4. With increasing hole doping level from undoped to optimally doped superconducting compositions, the leading edge of dd excitations is found to shift towards lower energy loss in a roughly linear trend that is irrespective to the cuprate species. The magnitude of energy shift can be explained by including a 0.15 eV Coulomb attraction between Cu 3d_(x^2-y^2) electrons and the doped holes on the surrounding oxygens in the atomic multiplet calculations. The consistent energy shift between distinct cuprate families suggests that this inter-site Coulomb interaction energy scale is relatively material-independent, and provides an important reference point for understanding charge density wave phenomena in the cuprate phase diagram.

Realization of electron antidoping by modulating the breathing distortion in BaBiO$_3$

The recent proposal of antidoping scheme breaks new ground in conceiving conversely functional materials and devices, yet the few available examples belong to the correlated electron systems. Here we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the main group oxide BaBiO$_3$ is a model system for antidoping using oxygen vacancies. The first principles calculations show that the band gap systematically increases due to the strongly enhanced BiO breathing distortions away from the vacancies and the annihilation of Bi 6s and O 2p hybridized conduction bands near the vacancies. The spectroscopic experiments confirm the band gap increasing systematically with electron doping, with a maximal gap enhancement of 75% when the film's stoichiometry is reduced to BaBiO$_{2.75}$. The Raman and diffraction experiments show the suppression of the overall breathing distortion. The study unambiguously demonstrates the remarkable antidoping effect in a material without strong electron correlations and underscores the importance of bond disproportionation in realizing such an effect.

Two-dimensional electron systems in perovskite oxide heterostructures: Role of the polarity-induced substitutional defects

The discovery of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interfaces of perovskite oxides such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has motivated enormous efforts in engineering interfacial functionalities with this type of oxide heterostructures. However, its fundamental origins are still not understood, e.g. the microscopic mechanisms of coexisting interface conductivity and magnetism. Here we report a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of the depth profile of 2DES-relevant Ti 3d interface carriers using depth- and element-specific techniques, standing-wave excited photoemission and resonant inelastic scattering. We found that one type of Ti 3d interface carriers, which give rise to the 2DES are located within 3 unit cells from the n-type interface in the SrTiO3 layer. Unexpectedly, another type of interface carriers, which are polarity-induced Ti-on-Al antisite defects, reside in the first 3 unit cells of the opposing LaAlO3 layer (~10 Å). Our findings provide a microscopic picture of how the localized and mobile Ti 3d interface carriers distribute across the interface and suggest that the 2DES and 2D magnetism at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface have disparate explanations as originating from different types of interface carriers.

Disparate exciton-phonon couplings for zone center and boundary phonons in solid-state graphite

The exciton-phonon coupling in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is studied using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy. With ~ 70 meV energy resolution, multiple low energy excitations associated with coupling to phonons can be clearly resolved in RIXS spectra. Using resonance dependence and the closed form for RIXS cross-section without considering the intermediate state mixing of phonon modes, the dimensionless coupling constant g is determined to be 5 and 0.4, corresponding to the coupling strength of 0.42 eV +/- 40 meV and 0.21 eV +/- 30 meV, for zone center and boundary phonons respectively. The reduced g value for zone-boundary phonon may be related to its double resonance nature.
