Robust Long-Tailed Learning under Label Noise

Long-tailed learning has attracted much attention recently, with the goal of improving generalisation for tail classes. Most existing works use supervised learning without considering the prevailing noise in the training dataset. To move long-tailed learning towards more realistic scenarios, this work investigates the label noise problem under long-tailed label distribution. We first observe the negative impact of noisy labels on the performance of existing methods, revealing the intrinsic challenges of this problem. As the most commonly used approach to cope with noisy labels in previous literature, we then find that the small-loss trick fails under long-tailed label distribution. The reason is that deep neural networks cannot distinguish correctly-labeled and mislabeled examples on tail classes. To overcome this limitation, we establish a new prototypical noise detection method by designing a distance-based metric that is resistant to label noise. Based on the above findings, we propose a robust framework,~\algo, that realizes noise detection for long-tailed learning, followed by soft pseudo-labeling via both label smoothing and diverse label guessing. Moreover, our framework can naturally leverage semi-supervised learning algorithms to further improve the generalisation. Extensive experiments on benchmark and real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of our methods over existing baselines. In particular, our method outperforms DivideMix by 3\% in test accuracy. Source code will be released soon.

NGC: A Unified Framework for Learning with Open-World Noisy Data

The existence of noisy data is prevalent in both the training and testing phases of machine learning systems, which inevitably leads to the degradation of model performance. There have been plenty of works concentrated on learning with in-distribution (IND) noisy labels in the last decade, i.e., some training samples are assigned incorrect labels that do not correspond to their true classes. Nonetheless, in real application scenarios, it is necessary to consider the influence of out-of-distribution (OOD) samples, i.e., samples that do not belong to any known classes, which has not been sufficiently explored yet. To remedy this, we study a new problem setup, namely Learning with Open-world Noisy Data (LOND). The goal of LOND is to simultaneously learn a classifier and an OOD detector from datasets with mixed IND and OOD noise. In this paper, we propose a new graph-based framework, namely Noisy Graph Cleaning (NGC), which collects clean samples by leveraging geometric structure of data and model predictive confidence. Without any additional training effort, NGC can detect and reject the OOD samples based on the learned class prototypes directly in testing phase. We conduct experiments on multiple benchmarks with different types of noise and the results demonstrate the superior performance of our method against state of the arts.

Spin Flavor Spectral Splits of Supernova Neutrino Flavor Conversions

The supernova neutrino flavor evolution in the presence of the non-trivial neutrino magnetic moment and strong magnetic field is numerically derived using the two-flavor and single-angle approximation. The novel properties of collective neutrino oscillations are studied and distinct patterns of flavor and spin-flavor spectral splits are presented. Finally we also discuss how the neutrino magnetic moment affects the observable supernova neutrino energy spectra.

Neutral-current background induced by atmospheric neutrinos at large liquid-scintillator detectors: I. model predictions

The experimental searches for diffuse supernova neutrino background and proton decay in next-generation large liquid-scintillator (LS) detectors are competitive with and complementary to those in the water-Cherenkov detectors. In this paper, we carry out a systematic study of the dominant background induced by atmospheric neutrinos via their neutral-current (NC) interactions with the $^{12}{\rm C}$ nuclei in the LS detectors. The atmospheric neutrino fluxes at the location of Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) are used, as the JUNO detector is obviously a suitable representative for future LS detectors. Then, we implement the sophisticated generators \texttt{GENIE} and \texttt{NuWro} to simulate the neutrino interactions with the carbon nuclei, and the package \texttt{TALYS} to deal with the deexcitations of final-state nuclei. Finally, the event rates for the production of additional nucleons, $γ$'s, $α$'s, pions and kaons are obtained and categorized, and the systematic uncertainty of the NC background represented by a variety of data-driven nuclear models is estimated. The implications of the NC background from atmospheric neutrinos for the detection of diffuse supernova neutrino background and proton decay are also discussed.

Neutral-current background induced by atmospheric neutrinos at large liquid-scintillator detectors: II. Methodology for in situ measurements

Future large liquid-scintillator (LS) detectors are competitive with and complementary to the water-Cherenkov detectors on the searches for diffuse supernova neutrino background and nucleon decay. In a companion paper, we have performed a systematic calculation of the neutral-current (NC) background induced by atmospheric neutrino interactions on $^{12}{\rm C}$ nuclei in LS detectors, which are expected to be crucially important for the experimental searches for the diffuse supernova neutrino background and nucleon decay. In this paper, we perform a systematic study on the measurement of the NC background and evaluate the associated uncertainties. We first exploit the characteristics of the NC background, in particular, the multiplicities of neutrons and pions, and the possible association with unstable residual nuclei. It turns out that the neutron multiplicity distribution is very powerful to discriminate among different models. Then, we develop a maximum-likelihood method to allow an {\it in situ} measurement of the NC interactions with a triple-coincidence signature. Finally, a data-driven approach is proposed to evaluate the uncertainty of the NC background in the search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background. We conclude that future large LS experiments like JUNO (Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory) will be able to make a unique contribution to the worldwide data set to improve the prediction of atmospheric neutrino NC interactions on $^{12}$C.

Ab initio calculations of reactor antineutrino fluxes with exact lepton wave functions

New \textit{ab initio} calculations of the isotopic reactor antineutrino fluxes are provided with exact numerical calculations of the lepton wave functions, assuming all the decay branches are allowed GT transitions. We illustrate that the analytical Fermi function and finite size effect each could have the largest spectral deviation of $\mathcal{O}(10\%)$, whereas the effect of their combination could result in spectral deviations at the level of 5%-10%. Meanwhile, we also find that several forms of the extended charge distributions have negligible effects on the spectral variation. Using the state-of-the-art nuclear databases, compared to usual \textit{ab initio} calculations using the analytical single beta decay spectrum, our new calculation shows sizable but opposite spectral deviations at the level of 2%-4% for the cumulative antineutrino and electron energy spectra which may partially contribute to the observed spectral excess in the high energy antineutrino range. Finally we observe that the {bias} of analytical beta decay spectrum approximation is rather universal for all the four fissionable isotopes.

Prospects for Pre-supernova Neutrino Observation in Future Large Liquid-scintillator Detectors

Before massive stars heavier than $(8 \cdots 10)$ solar masses evolve to the phase of a gravitational core collapse, they will emit a huge number of MeV-energy neutrinos that are mainly produced in the thermal processes and nuclear weak interactions. The detection of such pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos could provide an important and independent early warning for the optical observations of core-collapse SNe. In this paper, we investigate the prospects of future large liquid-scintillator detectors for the observation of pre-SN neutrinos in both $\barν^{}_e + p \to e^+ + n$ and $ν(\barν) + e^- \to ν(\barν) + e^-$ reaction channels, where $ν$ ($\barν$) denotes neutrinos (antineutrinos) of all three flavors. We propose a quantitative assessment of the capability in terms of three working criteria, namely, how far the SN distance can be covered, how long the early warning before the core collapse can be sent out, and how well the direction pointing to the SN can be determined. The dependence of the final results on the different models of progenitor stars, neutrino flavor conversions and the relevant backgrounds is also discussed.

Weakly Supervised Learning Meets Ride-Sharing User Experience Enhancement

Weakly supervised learning aims at coping with scarce labeled data. Previous weakly supervised studies typically assume that there is only one kind of weak supervision in data. In many applications, however, raw data usually contains more than one kind of weak supervision at the same time. For example, in user experience enhancement from Didi, one of the largest online ride-sharing platforms, the ride comment data contains severe label noise (due to the subjective factors of passengers) and severe label distribution bias (due to the sampling bias). We call such a problem as "compound weakly supervised learning". In this paper, we propose the CWSL method to address this problem based on Didi ride-sharing comment data. Specifically, an instance reweighting strategy is employed to cope with severe label noise in comment data, where the weights for harmful noisy instances are small. Robust criteria like AUC rather than accuracy and the validation performance are optimized for the correction of biased data label. Alternating optimization and stochastic gradient methods accelerate the optimization on large-scale data. Experiments on Didi ride-sharing comment data clearly validate the effectiveness. We hope this work may shed some light on applying weakly supervised learning to complex real situations.

JULOC: A Local 3-D Refined Crust Model for the Geoneutrino Measurement at JUNO

Geothermal energy is the key to drive the plate tectonics and interior thermodynamics of the Earth. The surface heat flux, as measured in boreholes, provide limited insights into the relative contributions of primordial versus radiogenic sources of the heat budget of the mantle. Geoneutrinos, electron antineutrinos that produced from the radioactive decay of the heat producing elements, are unique probes that bring direct information about the amount and distribution of heat producing elements in the crust and mantle. Cosmochemical, geochemical, and geodynamic compositional models of the Bulk Silicate Earth (BSE) individually predicts different mantle neutrino fluxes, and therefore can be distinguished by the direct measurement of geoneutrinos. The 20 kton detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), currently under construction in the Guangdong Province (China), is expected to provide an exciting opportunity to obtain a high statistics measurement, which will produce sufficient data to address several key questions of geological importance. To test different compositional models of the mantle, an accurate estimation of the crust geoneutrino flux based on a three-dimensional (3-D) crust model in advance is important. This paper presents a 3-D crust model over a surface area of 10-degrees-times-10-degrees grid surrounding the JUNO detector and a depth down to the Moho discontinuity, based on the geological, geophysical and geochemistry properties. The 3-D model provides a distinction of the volumes of the different geological layers together with the corresponding Th and U abundances. We also present our predicted local contribution to the total geoneutrino flux and the corresponding radiogenic heat.

Non-negligible Oscillation Effects in the Crustal Geo-neutrino Calculations

An accurate prediction of the geo-neutrino signal from the crust serves as a necessary prerequisite in the determination of the geo-neutrino flux from the mantle. In this work we report the non-negligible effect associated to the exact three-flavor antineutrino survival probability in the calculation of the crustal geo-neutrino signal, which was usually approximated as a constant average in previous studies. A geo-neutrino signal underestimation of about 1-2 TNU is observed as a result of the oscillatory behaviour within the local crustal region extending for about 300 km from the experimental site. We also estimated that the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein matter oscillation is responsible for a $0.1\%$-$0.3\%$ increase of the local crustal signal, depending on the detector location. This work reminds that the exact oscillation possibility in matter should be considered for future prediction of the local crustal geo-neutrino signal.

New Realization of the Conversion Calculation for Reactor Antineutrino Fluxes

Validation of the effective conversion method in the reactor antineutrino flux calculation is examined using the \textit{ab initio} calculation of the electron and antineutrino spectra from the state-of-the-art nuclear database. It turns out that neglecting the shape variation of beta decay branches between the allowed and forbidden transitions would induce significant bias in the total inverse-beta-decay yields and energy spectral distributions. We propose a new realization of the conversion method with both the allowed and forbidden virtual branches, and apply it to both the \textit{simulated} data from the nuclear database and \textit{real} data from the fission measurements at ILL by virtue of statistical properties of the allowed and forbidden decays in the database. Two kinds of dominant uncertainty sources are identified and it turns out that the new realization of the conversion calculation can largely reduce the rate and spectral bias and thus present a reliable prediction of the antineutrino fluxes if accurate beta decay information is available in the high endpoint energy range.

Confronting Tri-direct CP-symmetry models to neutrino oscillation experiments

Tri-direct CP symmetry is an economical neutrino model building paradigm, and it allows to describe neutrino masses, mixing angles and CP violation phases in terms of four free parameters. Viability of a class of tri-direct CP models is examined with a comprehensive simulation of current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. Two benchmark models as well as the full parameter space are carefully scanned, and the parameter degeneracy problem is observed from the constraint of one group of neutrino oscillation experiments. Complementary roles from the accelerator neutrino experiments (e.g., T2HK and DUNE) and reactor neutrino experiments (e.g., JUNO) are crucial to break the degeneracy and nail down fundamental neutrino mixing parameters of the underlying theory.

Towards the meV limit of the effective neutrino mass in neutrinoless double-beta decays

In this paper, we emphasize why it is important for future neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay experiments to reach the sensitivity to the effective neutrino mass $|m^{}_{ββ}| \approx 1~{\rm meV}$. Assuming such a sensitivity and the precisions on neutrino oscillation parameters after the JUNO experiment, we fully explore the constrained regions of the lightest neutrino mass $m^{}_1$ and two Majorana-type CP-violating phases $\{ρ, σ\}$. The implications for the neutrino mass spectrum, the effective neutrino mass $m^{}_β$ in beta decays and the sum of three neutrino masses $Σ\equiv m^{}_1 + m^{}_2 + m^{}_3$ relevant for cosmological observations are also discussed.

Reliable Weakly Supervised Learning: Maximize Gain and Maintain Safeness

Weakly supervised data are widespread and have attracted much attention. However, since label quality is often difficult to guarantee, sometimes the use of weakly supervised data will lead to unsatisfactory performance, i.e., performance degradation or poor performance gains. Moreover, it is usually not feasible to manually increase the label quality, which results in weakly supervised learning being somewhat difficult to rely on. In view of this crucial issue, this paper proposes a simple and novel weakly supervised learning framework. We guide the optimization of label quality through a small amount of validation data, and to ensure the safeness of performance while maximizing performance gain. As validation set is a good approximation for describing generalization risk, it can effectively avoid the unsatisfactory performance caused by incorrect data distribution assumptions. We formalize this underlying consideration into a novel Bi-Level optimization and give an effective solution. Extensive experimental results verify that the new framework achieves impressive performance on weakly supervised learning with a small amount of validation data.

A model-independent approach to the reconstruction of multi-flavor supernova neutrino energy spectra

The model-independent reconstruction of the energy spectra of $\overlineν^{}_e$, $ν^{}_e$ and $ν^{}_x$ (i.e., $ν^{}_μ$, $ν^{}_τ$ and their antiparticles) from the future observation of a galactic core-collapse supernova (SN) is of crucial importance to understand the microscopic physics of SN explosions. To this end, we propose a practically useful method to combine the multi-channel detection of SN neutrinos in a large liquid-scintillator detector (e.g., JUNO), namely, the inverse beta decay $\overlineν^{}_e + p \to e^+ + n$, the elastic neutrino-proton scattering $ν+ p \to ν+ p$ and the elastic neutrino-electron scattering $ν+ e^- \to ν+ e^-$, and reconstruct the energy spectra of $\overlineν^{}_e$, $ν^{}_e$ and $ν^{}_x$ by making the best use of the observational data in those three channels. In addition, the neutrino energy spectra from the numerical simulations of the delayed neutrino-driven SN explosions are implemented to demonstrate the robustness of our method. Taking the ordinary matter effects into account, we also show how to extract the initial neutrino energy spectra in the presence of neutrino flavor conversions.

Indirect unitarity violation entangled with matter effects in reactor antineutrino oscillations

If finite but tiny masses of the three active neutrinos are generated via the canonical seesaw mechanism with three heavy sterile neutrinos, the 3\times 3 Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata neutrino mixing matrix V will not be exactly unitary. This kind of indirect unitarity violation can be probed in a precision reactor antineutrino oscillation experiment, but it may be entangled with terrestrial matter effects as both of them are very small. We calculate the probability of \overlineν_e \to \overlineν_e oscillations in a good analytical approximation, and find that, besides the zero-distance effect, the effect of unitarity violation is always smaller than matter effects, and their entanglement does not appear until the next-to-leading-order oscillating terms are taken into account. Given a 20-kiloton JUNO-like liquid scintillator detector, we reaffirm that terrestrial matter effects should not be neglected but indirect unitarity violation makes no difference, and demonstrate that the experimental sensitivities to the neutrino mass ordering and a precision measurement of θ_{12} and Δ_{21} \equiv m^2_2 - m^2_1 are robust.

Towards a complete reconstruction of supernova neutrino spectra in future large liquid-scintillator detectors

In this paper, we show how to carry out a relatively more realistic and complete reconstruction of supernova neutrino spectra in the future large liquid-scintillator detectors, by implementing the method of singular value decomposition with a proper regularization. For a core-collapse supernova at a distance of $10~{\rm kpc}$ in the Milky Way, its $\overlineν^{}_e$ spectrum can be precisely determined from the inverse beta-decay process $\overlineν^{}_e + p \to e^+ + n$, for which a $20~{\rm kiloton}$ liquid-scintillator detector with the resolution similar to the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) may register more than 5000 events. We have to rely predominantly on the elastic neutrino-electron scattering $ν+ e^- \to ν+ e^-$ and the elastic neutrino-proton scattering $ν+ p \to ν+ p$ for the spectra of $ν^{}_e$ and $ν^{}_x$, where $ν$ denotes collectively neutrinos and antineutrinos of all three flavors and $ν^{}_x$ for $ν^{}_μ$ and $ν^{}_τ$ as well as their antiparticles. To demonstrate the validity of our approach, we also attempt to reconstruct the neutrino spectra by using the time-integrated neutrino data from the latest numerical simulations of delayed neutrino-driven supernova explosions.

Probing Direct and Indirect Unitarity Violation in Future Accelerator Neutrino Facilities

The possible existence of light and heavy sterile neutrinos may give rise to direct and indirect unitarity violation of the $3\times3$ lepton mixing matrix respectively. In the current work we study the potential of future accelerator neutrino facilities in probing the unitarity violation effects. Taking DUNE, T2HK and a low-energy Neutrino Factory (LENF) as working examples of future accelerator neutrino facilities, we study the distinct effects of direct and indirect unitarity violation on the discovery reach of the leptonic CP violation and precision measurements of $θ_{23}$ in the three neutrino framework. In addition, constraints on the additional mixing parameters of direct and indirect unitarity violation are also discussed. Finally, we stress that the combination of experiments with different oscillation channels, different neutrino beams and different detector techniques will be an effective solution to the parameter degeneracy problem and give the robust measurement of leptonic CP violation even if the direct and indirect unitarity violation are taken into account.
