Scattering approach for calculating one-loop effective action and vacuum energy

We propose an approach for calculating one-loop effective actions and vacuum energies in quantum field theory. Spectral functions are functions defined by the eigenvalues of an operator. One-loop effective actions and vacuum energies in quantum field theory, as well as scattering phase shifts and scattering amplitudes in quantum mechanics, are all spectral functions. If a transformation between different spectral functions is identified, we can obtain a spectral function from another through the transformation. In this paper, we convert quantum mechanical methods for calculating scattering phase shifts and scattering amplitudes into quantum field theory methods for calculating one-loop effective actions and vacuum energies.

Adaptively-Realistic Image Generation from Stroke and Sketch with Diffusion Model

Generating images from hand-drawings is a crucial and fundamental task in content creation. The translation is difficult as there exist infinite possibilities and the different users usually expect different outcomes. Therefore, we propose a unified framework supporting a three-dimensional control over the image synthesis from sketches and strokes based on diffusion models. Users can not only decide the level of faithfulness to the input strokes and sketches, but also the degree of realism, as the user inputs are usually not consistent with the real images. Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that our framework achieves state-of-the-art performance while providing flexibility in generating customized images with control over shape, color, and realism. Moreover, our method unleashes applications such as editing on real images, generation with partial sketches and strokes, and multi-domain multi-modal synthesis.

Vector Quantized Image-to-Image Translation

Current image-to-image translation methods formulate the task with conditional generation models, leading to learning only the recolorization or regional changes as being constrained by the rich structural information provided by the conditional contexts. In this work, we propose introducing the vector quantization technique into the image-to-image translation framework. The vector quantized content representation can facilitate not only the translation, but also the unconditional distribution shared among different domains. Meanwhile, along with the disentangled style representation, the proposed method further enables the capability of image extension with flexibility in both intra- and inter-domains. Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that our framework achieves comparable performance to the state-of-the-art image-to-image translation and image extension methods. Compared to methods for individual tasks, the proposed method, as a unified framework, unleashes applications combining image-to-image translation, unconditional generation, and image extension altogether. For example, it provides style variability for image generation and extension, and equips image-to-image translation with further extension capabilities.

Energy spectrum of interacting gas: cluster expansion method

In this paper, we calculate the energy spectrum of interacting gases by converting the cluster expansion method in statistical mechanics into a method of solving energy eigenvalues. We obtain an explicit expression of the energy eigenvalue, by which we can calculate the eigenvalue of an interacting gas from the interparticle potential directly. As an example, we calculate the energy spectrum for an interacting gas with soft-sphere potentials.

Constructing effective action for gravitational field by effective potential method

The aim of this paper is to construct a quantum effective action for gravitational fields by the effective potential method in quantum field theory. The minimum of the quantum effective action gives an equation of quantum fluctuations. We discuss the quantum fluctuation in the flat spacetime and in the Schwarzschild spacetime. It is shown that a baby spacetime may be created from a classical vacuum through a quantum fluctuation.

Multipole moment and singular source in Newtonian gravity and in Einstein gravity

The multipole moments are defined as the multipole expansion coefficients of the gravitational field at infinity. In Newtonian gravity, the multipole moments are determined by the source distribution -- the multipole integrals of the source. In this paper, we show that the multipole moments in general relativity cannot be determined by the multipole integrals of the source. We provide the multipole integrals in static axial spacetimes, such as, the Curzon spacetime. The Curzon spacetime possesses the same multipole integrals of the source with the Schwarzschild spacetime, while they possess different multipole moments.

Quantum correction of gravitational constant

We suggest a scheme for considering the quantum correction of the gravitational constant. In the model, the gravitational constant originates from a coupling of the gravitational field with a scalar field. In this paper, we show that if the scalar field, as it should be in the real physical world, is a quantum field, then the gravitational constant will have a spacetime-dependent quantum correction, so that the quantum corrected physical constant is no longer a constant. The quantum correction of the gravitational constant is different in different spacetime. We calculate the quantum correction in the Schwarzschild spacetime, the $H_{3}$ (Euclidean $AdS_{3}$) spacetime, the $H_{3}/Z$ spacetime, the universe model, the de Sitter spacetime, and the Rindler spacetime.

Gravitational wave scattering theory without large-distance asymptotics

In conventional gravitational wave scattering theory, a large-distance asymptotic approximation is employed. In this approximation, the gravitational wave is approximated by its large-distance asymptotics. In this paper, we establish a gravitational wave scattering theory without the large-distance asymptotic approximation.

Toy models of black hole, white hole and wormhole: thermal effects and information loss problem

In this paper, by setting proper boundaries in the Minkowski spacetime, we construct three toy model spacetimes, a toy black hole, a toy white hole, and a toy wormhole. Based on these model spacetimes, we discuss the Hawking radiation and the information loss problem. By counting the number of the field modes inside and outside the horizon, we show the thermal radiation of the toy black hole. We show that the white hole have a thermal absorption. We show that in the whole toy wormhole spacetime, there is no information lost. In addition, we show the black hole radiation and the white hole absorption are independent of the choices of boundary conditions at the singularity. We also show the physical effects caused by two particular boundary conditions.

Cylindrical gravitational waves: radiation and resonance

In the weak field approximation the gravitational wave is approximated as a linear wave, which ignores the nonlinear effect. In this paper, we present an exact general solution of the cylindrical gravitational wave. The exact solution of the cylindrical gravitational wave is far different from the weak field approximation. This solution implies the following conclusions. (1) There exist gravitational monopole radiations in the cylindrical gravitational radiation. (2) The gravitational radiation may generate the resonance in the spacetime. (3) The nonlinearity of the gravity source vanishes after time averaging, so the observed result of a long-time measurement may be linear.

Distribution of high-dimensional orbital angular momentum entanglement at telecom wavelength over 1km of optical fibre

High-dimensional entanglement has demonstrated potential for increasing channel capacity and resistance to noise in quantum information processing. However, its distribution is a challenging task, imposing a severe restriction on its application. Here we report the first distribution of three-dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement via a 1-km-long optical fibre. Using an actively-stabilizing phase pre-compensation technique, we successfully transport one photon of a three-dimensional OAM entangled photon pair through the fibre. The distributed OAM entangled state still shows a fidelity up to 71\% with respect to the three-dimensional maximal-entangled-state (MES). In addition, we certify that the high-dimensional quantum entanglement survives the transportation by violating a generalized Bell inequality, obtaining a violation of $\sim3$ standard deviations with $I_{3}=2.12\pm0.04$. The method we developed can be extended to higher OAM dimension and larger distances in principle. Our results make a significant step towards future OAM-based high-dimensional long-distance quantum communication.

Silicon nitride metalenses for unpolarized high-NA visible imaging

As one of nanoscale planar structures, metasurface has shown excellent superiorities on manipulating light intensity, phase and/or polarization with specially designed nanoposts pattern. It allows to miniature a bulky optical lens into the chip-size metalens with wavelength-order thickness, playing an unprecedented role in visible imaging systems (e.g. ultrawide-angle lens and telephoto). However, a CMOS-compatible metalens has yet to be achieved in the visible region due to the limitation on material properties such as transmission and compatibility. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a divergent metalens based on silicon nitride platform with large numerical aperture (NA~0.98) and high transmission (~0.8) for unpolarized visible light, fabricated by a 695-nm-thick hexagonal silicon nitride array with a minimum space of 42 nm between adjacent nanoposts. Nearly diffraction-limit virtual focus spots are achieved within the visible region. Such metalens enables to shrink objects into a micro-scale size field of view as small as a single-mode fiber core. Furthermore, a macroscopic metalens with 1-cm-diameter is also realized including over half billion nanoposts, showing a potential application of wide viewing-angle functionality. Thanks to the high-transmission and CMOS-compatibility of silicon nitride, our findings may open a new door for the miniaturization of optical lenses in the fields of optical fibers, microendoscopes, smart phones, aerial cameras, beam shaping, and other integrated on-chip devices.

Spatial chaos of Wang tiles with two symbols

This investigation completely classifies the spatial chaos problem in plane edge coloring (Wang tiles) with two symbols. For a set of Wang tiles $\mathcal{B}$, spatial chaos occurs when the spatial entropy $h(\mathcal{B})$ is positive. $\mathcal{B}$ is called a minimal cycle generator if $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{B})\neq\emptyset$ and $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{B}')=\emptyset$ whenever $\mathcal{B}'\subsetneqq \mathcal{B}$, where $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{B})$ is the set of all periodic patterns on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ generated by $\mathcal{B}$. Given a set of Wang tiles $\mathcal{B}$, write $\mathcal{B}=C_{1}\cup C_{2} \cup\cdots \cup C_{k} \cup N$, where $C_{j}$, $1\leq j\leq k$, are minimal cycle generators and $\mathcal{B}$ contains no minimal cycle generator except those contained in $C_{1}\cup C_{2} \cup\cdots \cup C_{k}$. Then, the positivity of spatial entropy $h(\mathcal{B})$ is completely determined by $C_{1}\cup C_{2} \cup\cdots \cup C_{k}$. Furthermore, there are 39 equivalent classes of marginal positive-entropy (MPE) sets of Wang tiles and 18 equivalent classes of saturated zero-entropy (SZE) sets of Wang tiles. For a set of Wang tiles $\mathcal{B}$, $h(\mathcal{B})$ is positive if and only if $\mathcal{B}$ contains an MPE set, and $h(\mathcal{B})$ is zero if and only if $\mathcal{B}$ is a subset of an SZE set.
