Optimal Convergence Estimate of the Limit from Inverse Power Potential to Hard Sphere Boltzmann Equation

The inverse power potential $U(r)=r^{-1/s}, 0<s<1$, generates the Boltzmann kernel $B^{s}=|v-v_*|^{1-4s} b_s(\theta)$ with an angular singularity as $\theta\to 0$. Jang-Kepka-Nota-Vel\'azquez (2023) proved the limit $B^{s}\to \frac14|v-v_*|$ as $s\to 0$, as well as weak convergence of solutions based on this kernel convergence. In this work we establish the following sharp quantitative estimate: $$ |b_s(\theta)-\tfrac14| \le C\, s\,\theta^{-2-2s}. $$ In particular, this sharp estimate yields the optimal $O(s)$ convergence rate for solutions of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation with large initial data in suitable Sobolev spaces; i.e., for any $t\in[0,T]$, we have $$f^s(t)=f^0(t)+O(s),$$ quantified by the $L^1_k$ norm for $k\ge 2.$

On semi-classical limit of spatially homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation: asymptotic expansion

We continue our previous work [Ling-Bing He, Xuguang Lu and Mario Pulvirenti, Comm. Math. Phys., 386(2021), no. 1, 143223.] on the limit of the spatially homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation as the Planck constant $\epsilon$ tends to zero, also known as the semi-classical limit. For general interaction potential, we prove the following: (i). The spatially homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equations are locally well-posed in some weighted Sobolev spaces with quantitative estimates uniformly in $\epsilon$. (ii). The semi-classical limit can be further described by the following asymptotic expansion formula: $$ f^\epsilon(t,v)=f_L(t,v)+O(\epsilon^{\vartheta}).$$ This holds locally in time in Sobolev spaces. Here $f^\epsilon$ and $f_L$ are solutions to the quantum Boltzmann equation and the Fokker-Planck-Landau equation with the same initial data. The convergent rate $0<\vartheta \leq 1$ depends on the integrability of the Fourier transform of the particle interaction potential. Our new ingredients lie in a detailed analysis of the Uehling-Uhlenbeck operator from both angular cutoff and non-cutoff perspectives.

A new understanding of grazing limit

The grazing limit of the Boltzmann equation to Landau equation is well-known and has been justified by using cutoff near the grazing angle with some suitable scaling. In this paper, we will provide a new understanding by simply applying a natural scaling on the Boltzmann operator without angular cutoff. The proof is based on a new well-posedness theory on the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff in the regime with optimal ranges of parameters so that the grazing limit can be justified directly for any $\gamma>-5$ that includes the Coulomb potential corresponding to $\gamma=-3$. With this new understanding, the scaled Boltzmann operator in fact can be decomposed into two components. The first one converges to the Landau operator when the singular parameter $s$ of interaction angle tends to $1^{-}$ and the second one vanishes in this limit.

An explicit coercivity estimate of the linearized quantum Boltzmann operator without angular cutoff

The quantum Boltzmann-Bose equation describes a large system of Bose-Einstein particles in the weak-coupling regime. If the particle interaction is governed by the inverse power law, the corresponding collision kernel has angular singularity. In this paper, we give a constructive proof of the coercivity estimate for the linearized quantum Boltzmann-Bose operator to capture the effects of the singularity and the fugacity. Precisely, the estimate explicitly reveals the dependence on the fugacity parameter before the Bose-Einstein condensation. With the coercivity estimate, the global in time well-posedness of the inhomogeneous quantum Boltzmann-Bose equation in the perturbative framework and stability of the Bose-Einstein equilibrium can be established.

Global well-posedness of the quantum Boltzmann equation for bosons interacting via inverse power law potentials

We consider the spatially inhomogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation for bosons with a singular collision kernel, the weak-coupling limit of a large system of Bose-Einstein particles interacting through inverse power law. Global well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem is proved in a periodic box near equilibrium for initial data satisfying high temperature condition.

Asymptotic analysis of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator from angular cutoff to non-cutoff

We give quantitative estimates on the asymptotics of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator and its associated equation from angular cutoff to non cutoff. On one hand, the results disclose the link between the hyperbolic property resulting from the Grad's cutoff assumption and the smoothing property due to the long-range interaction. On the other hand, with the help of the localization techniques in the phase space, we observe some new phenomenon in the asymptotic limit process. As a consequence, we give the affirmative answer to the question that there is no jump for the property that the collision operator with cutoff does not have the spectrum gap but the operator without cutoff does have for the moderate soft potentials.

Solutions to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation in the grazing limit

It is known that in the parameters range $-2 \leq γ<-2s$ spectral gap does not exist for the linearized Boltzmann operator without cutoff but it does for the linearized Landau operator. This paper is devoted to the understanding of the formation of spectral gap in this range through the grazing limit. Precisely, we study the Cauchy problems of these two classical collisional kinetic equations around global Maxwellians in torus and establish the following results that are uniform in the vanishing grazing parameter $ε$: (i) spectral gap type estimates for the collision operators; (ii) global existence of small-amplitude solutions for initial data with low regularity; (iii) propagation of regularity in both space and velocity variables as well as velocity moments without smallness; (iv) global-in-time asymptotics of the Boltzmann solution toward the Landau solution at the rate $O(ε)$; (v) continuous transition of decay structure of the Boltzmann operator to the Landau operator. In particular, the result in part (v) captures the uniform-in-$ε$ transition of intrinsic optimal time decay structures of solutions that reveals how the spectrum of the linearized non-cutoff Boltzmann equation in the mentioned parameter range changes continuously under the grazing limit.

Boltzmann equation with cutoff Rutherford scattering cross section near Maxwellian

The well-known Rutherford differential cross section, denoted by $ dΩ/dσ$, corresponds to a two body interaction with Coulomb potential. It leads to the logarithmically divergence of the momentum transfer (or the transport cross section) which is described by $$\int_{{\mathbb S}^2} (1-\cosθ) \frac{dΩ}{dσ} dσ\sim \int_0^π θ^{-1}dθ. $$ Here $θ$ is the deviation angle in the scattering event. Due to screening effect, physically one can assume that $θ_{\min}$ is the order of magnitude of the smallest angles for which the scattering can still be regarded as Coulomb scattering. Under ad hoc cutoff $θ\geq θ_{\min}$ on the deviation angle, L. D. Landau derived a new equation in \cite{landau1936transport} for the weakly interacting gas which is now referred to as the Fokker-Planck-Landau or Landau equation. In the present work, we establish a unified framework to justify Landau's formal derivation in \cite{landau1936transport} and the so-called Landau approximation problem proposed in \cite{alexandre2004landau} in the close-to-equilibrium regime. Precisely, (i). we prove global well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation with cutoff Rutherford cross section which is perhaps the most singular kernel both in relative velocity and deviation angle. (ii). we prove a global-in-time error estimate between solutions to Boltzmann and Landau equations with logarithm accuracy, which is consistent with the famous Coulomb logarithm. Key ingredients into the proofs of these results include a complete coercivity estimate of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator, a uniform spectral gap estimate and a novel linear-quasilinear method.

Neural networks for stock price prediction

Due to the extremely volatile nature of financial markets, it is commonly accepted that stock price prediction is a task full of challenge. However in order to make profits or understand the essence of equity market, numerous market participants or researchers try to forecast stock price using various statistical, econometric or even neural network models. In this work, we survey and compare the predictive power of five neural network models, namely, back propagation (BP) neural network, radial basis function (RBF) neural network, general regression neural network (GRNN), support vector machine regression (SVMR), least squares support vector machine regresssion (LS-SVMR). We apply the five models to make price prediction of three individual stocks, namely, Bank of China, Vanke A and Kweichou Moutai. Adopting mean square error and average absolute percentage error as criteria, we find BP neural network consistently and robustly outperforms the other four models.

Long Short-Term Memory Networks for CSI300 Volatility Prediction with Baidu Search Volume

Intense volatility in financial markets affect humans worldwide. Therefore, relatively accurate prediction of volatility is critical. We suggest that massive data sources resulting from human interaction with the Internet may offer a new perspective on the behavior of market participants in periods of large market movements. First we select 28 key words, which are related to finance as indicators of the public mood and macroeconomic factors. Then those 28 words of the daily search volume based on Baidu index are collected manually, from June 1, 2006 to October 29, 2017. We apply a Long Short-Term Memory neural network to forecast CSI300 volatility using those search volume data. Compared to the benchmark GARCH model, our forecast is more accurate, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the LSTM neural network in volatility forecasting.
