A novel approach to proton-boron-11 fusion

Proton-boron-11 (p-$^{11}$B) fusion is a highly attractive aneutronic pathway for clean energy production, offering abundant fuel, negligible neutron activation, and the potential for direct energy conversion of charged $\alpha$ particles. However, its practical implementation is severely hindered by the extremely high Coulomb barrier, necessitating ignition temperatures far beyond those of conventional deuterium-tritium reactions. In this work, we propose a novel approach to enhance the low-energy fusion cross-section by introducing a negative muon ($\mu$). Instead of relying on the thermal equilibrium formation of a muonic molecule, we investigate a kinetic scenario in which a muonic hydrogen atom (p$\mu$) is formed first and subsequently bombarded with a $^{11}$B nucleus. We quantitatively characterize the dynamic screening of the proton's Coulomb field by the tightly bound $\mu$ cloud, the resulting modified Coulomb potential substantially lowers the effective barrier at intermediate separations. We also evaluate the penetrability, reaction cross-section, and reactivity of the p$\mu$-$^{11}$B system, the results indicate that the inclusion of $\mu$ enhances the tunneling probability by several orders of magnitude at incident energies below 100~keV, thereby significantly reducing the threshold for the nuclear reaction. This mechanism offers a promising alternative perspective for catalyzing p-$^{11}$B fusion, and also suggests a potential ignition pathway.

Revisiting p-$^{11}$B Fusion: Updated Cross-sections, Reactivity, and Energy Balance

Recent experimental progress has substantially improved the available cross-section data for the p-$^{11}$B fusion reaction, particularly in energy regions that previously lacked direct measurements. In this study, we develop a high-precision analytical parameterization of the p-$^{11}$B reaction cross-section over the 0--10 MeV energy range, incorporating the new experimental data into a continuous and numerically efficient representation. Using this parameterization, we evaluate the thermonuclear reactivity of the p-$^{11}$B reaction and examine the effects of the dominant resonance at 0.6 MeV and a newly observed resonance around 4.7 MeV. Furthermore, we assess the energy balance by analyzing the fusion power density and the electron bremsstrahlung power density. Our results indicate that p-$^{11}$B fusion is not precluded by bremsstrahlung constraints when contemporary cross-section data and self-consistent thermal modeling are employed.

Search for pair production of the heavy vectorlike top partner in same-sign dilepton signature at the HL-LHC

New vectorlike quarks are predicted in many new physics scenarios beyond the Standard Model~(SM) and could potentially be discovered at the LHC. Based on a simplified model including a singlet vectorlike top partner with charge $2/3$, we investigate the process $pp \to TT$ via a $t$-channel induced by the couplings between the top partner with the first-generation SM quarks. We calculate the production cross section and further study the observability of the heavy top partner in the channel $T\to Wq$ at the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) using final states with same-sign dileptons (electrons or muons), two jets, and missing transverse momentum. At the 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$, the $2σ$ exclusion limits, as well as the $5σ$ discovery reach in the parameter plane of the two variables $g^{\ast}-R_L$, are respectively obtained at the HL-LHC. We also obtain the $2σ$ exclusion limit on the coupling strength parameter $g^{\ast}$ in the case in which the vectorlike top partner is coupled only to the first-generation quarks.

On the gauge transformation for the rotation of the singular string in the Dirac monopole theory

In the Dirac theory of the quantum-mechanical interaction of a magnetic monopole and an electric charge, the vector potential is singular from the origin to infinity along certain direction - the so called Dirac string. Imposing the famous quantization condition, the singular string attached to the monopole can be rotated arbitrarily by a gauge transformation, and hence is not physically observable. By deriving its analytical expression and analyzing its properties, we show that the gauge function $χ({\bf r})$ which rotates the string to another one has quite complicated behaviors depending on which side from which the position variable ${\bf r}$ gets across the plane expanded by the two strings. Consequently, some misunderstandings in the literature are clarified.

Searches for anomalous $tqZ$ couplings from the trilepton signal of $tZ$ associated production at the 14 TeV LHC

We investigate the observability of the top anomalous $tqZ$ couplings via the trilepton signatures at the Large Hadron Collider~(LHC) with the center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV. We focus on signals of the $tZ$ associated production with the decay mode $t\to W^{+}b\to b\ell^{+}ν_{\ell}$, $Z\to \ell^{+}\ell^{-}$, and $t\bar{t}$ production with the decay mode $\bar{t}\to Z(\to \ell^{+}\ell^{-})\bar{q}$ and $t\to b\ell^{+}ν_{\ell}$, where $\ell=e, μ$ and $q$ reflects up and charm quarks. It is shown that at $3σ$ level, the FCNC top quark decay branching ratios can be probed at, respectively, about $Br(t\to uZ) \leq 1.3\times 10^{-4}$ and $Br(t\to cZ) \leq 4.2\times 10^{-4}$ with the integrated luminosity of 100 fb$^{-1}$, and probed down to $Br(t\to uZ) \leq 2.2\times 10^{-5}$ and $Br(t\to cZ) \leq 8\times 10^{-5}$ for the high-luminosity LHC with 3000 fb$^{-1}$.

Search for single production of the vector-like top partner at the 14 TeV LHC

The new heavy vector-like top partner~($T$) is one of typical features of many new physics models beyond the standard model. In this paper we study the discovery potential of the LHC for the vector-like $T$-quark both in the leptonic $T\to bW$ and $T\to t_{\rm lep}Z_{\rm lep}$ (trilepton) channels at $\sqrt{s}= 14$ TeV in the single production mode. Our analysis is based on a simplified model including a $SU(2)_L$ singlet with charge $2/3$ with only two free parameters, namely the $TWb$ coupling parameter $g^{\ast}$ and the top partner mass $m_T$. The $2σ$ exclusion limits, $3σ$ evidence and the $5σ$ discovery reach in the parameter plane of $g^{\ast}-m_T$, are, respectively, obtained for some typical integrated luminosity at the 14 TeV LHC. Finally we analyze the projected sensitivity in terms of the production cross section times branching fraction for two decay channel.

Role of quark-interchange processes in evolution of mesonic matter

We divide the cross section for a meson-meson reaction into three parts. The first part is for the quark-interchange process, the second for quark-antiquark annihilation processes and the third for resonant processes. Master rate equations are established to yield time dependence of fugacities of pions, rhos, kaons and vetor kaons. The equations include cross sections for inelastic scattering of pions, rhos, kaons and vector kaons. Cross sections for quark-interchange-induced reactions, that were obtained in a potential model, are parametrized for convenient use. The number densities of pion and rho (kaon and vector kaon) are altered by quark-interchange processes in equal magnitudes but opposite signs. The master rate equations combined with the hydrodynamic equations for longitudinal and transverse expansion are solved with many sets of initial meson fugacities. Quark-interchange processes are shown to be important in the contribution of the inelastic meson-meson scattering to evolution of mesonic matter.

Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates with time-dependent atomic scattering length in an expulsive parabolic and complex potential

We present two families of analytical solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation which describe the dynamics of bright and dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with the time-dependent interatomic interaction in an expulsive parabolic and complex potential. We also demonstrate that the lifetime of both a bright soliton and a dark soliton in BECs can be extended by reducing both the ratio of the axial oscillation frequency to radial oscillation frequency and the loss of atoms. It is interested that a train of bright solitons may be excited with a strong enough background. An experimental protocol is further designed for observing this phenomenon.

Cross sections for meson-meson nonresonant reactions

Meson-meson nonresonant reactions governed by the quark-interchange mechanism are studied in a potential that is derived from QCD. S-wave elastic phase shifts for I=2 ππand I=3/2 K πscattering are obtained with wave functions determined by the central spin-independent term of the potential. The reactions include inelastic scatterings of two mesons in the ground-state pseudoscalar octet and the ground-state vector nonet. Cross sections for reactions involving pion, rho, K and K^* indicate that mesonic interactions in matter consisting of only K and K^* can be stronger than mesonic interactions in matter consisting of only pions and rhos and the reaction of I=3/2 πK^* \to ρK is most important among the endothermic nonresonant reactions. By the quark-interchange mechanism we can offer \sqrt s-dependences of phi absorption cross sections in collisions with pion and rho and relevant average cross sections what are very small for the reaction of I=1 πϕ\to K^* K^* and remarkably large for the reaction of I=1 ρϕ\to K^* K^*. It is found from the \sqrt s-dependences of cross sections that rho and K^* creation cross sections can be larger than their absorption cross sections, respectively.

Difference Discrete Variational Principle in Discrete Mechanics and Symplectic Algorithm

We propose the difference discrete variational principle in discrete mechanics and symplectic algorithm with variable step-length of time in finite duration based upon a noncommutative differential calculus established in this paper. This approach keeps both symplicticity and energy conservation discretely. We show that there exists the discrete version of the Euler-Lagrange cohomology in these discrete systems. We also discuss the solution existence in finite time-length and its site density in continuous limit, and apply our approach to the pendulum with periodic perturbation. The numerical results are satisfactory.

On Symplectic, Multisymplectic Structures-Preserving in Simple Finite Element Method

By the simple finite element method, we study the symplectic, multisymplectic structures and relevant preserving properties in some semi-linear elliptic boundary value problem in one-dimensional and two-dimensional spaces respectively. We find that with uniform mesh, the numerical schemes derived from finite element method can keep a preserved symplectic structure in one-dimensional case and a preserved multisymplectic structure in two-dimentional case respectively. These results are in fact the intrinsic reason that the numerical experiments indicate that such finite element schemes are accurate in practice.
