Membership Inference Attacks against Large Audio Language Models

We present the first systematic Membership Inference Attack (MIA) evaluation of LALMs. Using Multi-modal Blind Baselines based on textual, spectral and prosodic features, we demonstrate that common audio datasets exhibit near-perfect train/test separability (AUC ~ 1.0) even without model inference, thus MIA may primarily detect distribution shift. We therefore introduce a blind-baseline protocol to control for this confound. Under this protocol, we identify that the distribution-matched datasets enable reliable MIA evaluation without distribution-shift artifacts. We benchmark multiple MIA methods and conduct modality disentanglement experiments on these datasets. The results reveal that LALM memorization is cross-modal, arising only from binding a speaker's vocal identity with its text. These findings establish a principled standard for auditing LALMs beyond spurious correlations. Our codebase is available at https://github.com/snooow1029/ALM_MIA.

Style Amnesia: Investigating Speaking Style Degradation and Mitigation in Multi-Turn Spoken Language Models

In this paper, we show that when spoken language models (SLMs) are instructed to speak in a specific speaking style at the beginning of a multi-turn conversation, they cannot maintain the required speaking styles after several turns of interaction; we refer to this as the style amnesia of SLMs. We focus on paralinguistic speaking styles, including emotion, accent, volume, and speaking speed. We evaluate three proprietary and two open-source SLMs, demonstrating that none of these models can maintain a consistent speaking style when instructed to do so. We further show that while SLMs can recall the style instruction when prompted in later turns, they still fail to express it, but through explicit recall can mitigate style amnesia. In addition, SLMs struggle more when the style instruction is placed in system messages rather than user messages, even though system messages are specifically designed to provide persistent, conversation-level instructions. Our findings highlight a systematic gap in current SLMs' ability to maintain speaking styles, highlighting the need for improved style adherence in future models. Our code and evaluation data are publicly available at https://github.com/YuXiangLin1234/SLM-Style-Amnesia.

Hearing the Order: Investigating Position Bias in Large Audio-Language Models

Large audio-language models (LALMs) are often used in tasks that involve reasoning over ordered options. An open question is whether their predictions are influenced by the order of answer choices, which would indicate a form of position bias and undermine their reliability. In this paper, we identify and analyze this problem in LALMs. We demonstrate that no model is immune to this bias through extensive experiments on six LALMs across three widely used benchmarks and their spoken counterparts. Shuffling the order of answer options can cause performance fluctuations of up to 24% and even change model rankings, raising concerns about the reliability of current evaluation practices. We also study permutation-based strategies and show that they can mitigate bias in most cases. Our work represents the first systematic investigation of this issue in LALMs, and we hope it raises awareness and motivates further research in this direction.

DeSTA2.5-Audio: Toward General-Purpose Large Audio Language Model with Self-Generated Cross-Modal Alignment

We introduce DeSTA2.5-Audio, a general-purpose Large Audio Language Model (LALM) designed for robust auditory perception and instruction-following. Recent LALMs augment Large Language Models (LLMs) with auditory capabilities by training on large-scale audio-instruction datasets. However, existing LALMs have often suffered from the catastrophic forgetting of the LLM's original abilities. Therefore, balancing knowledge retention and audio perception has become a critical challenge. To address this, we revisit the data construction pipeline and propose a self-generated cross-modal alignment strategy in which the backbone LLM generates its own training targets, named DeSTA. This approach aims at preserving the LLM's native language proficiency thereby enabling zero-shot generalization without task-specific tuning. We construct DeSTA-AQA5M, a large-scale, task-agnostic dataset containing 5 million training samples derived from 7,000 hours of audio spanning 50 diverse datasets, including speech, environmental sounds, and music. DeSTA2.5-Audio achieves state-of-the-art or competitive performance across a wide range of audio-language benchmarks, including Dynamic-SUPERB, MMAU, SAKURA, Speech-IFEval, and VoiceBench. Comprehensive comparative studies demonstrate that our self-generated strategy outperforms existing training strategies. Our findings underscore the importance of carefully designed data construction in LALM development and offer practical insights for building robust, general-purpose LALMs.

A Preliminary Exploration with GPT-4o Voice Mode

With the rise of multimodal large language models, GPT-4o stands out as a pioneering model, driving us to evaluate its capabilities. This report assesses GPT-4o across various tasks to analyze its audio processing and reasoning abilities. We find that GPT-4o exhibits strong knowledge in audio, speech, and music understanding, performing well in tasks like intent classification, spoken command classification, semantic and grammatical reasoning., multilingual speech recognition, and singing analysis. It also shows greater robustness against hallucinations than other large audio-language models (LALMs). However, it struggles with tasks such as audio duration prediction and instrument classification. Additionally, GPT-4o's safety mechanisms cause it to decline tasks like speaker identification, age classification, MOS prediction, and audio deepfake detection. Notably, the model exhibits a significantly different refusal rate when responding to speaker verification tasks on different datasets. This is likely due to variations in the accompanying instructions or the quality of the input audio, suggesting the sensitivity of its built-in safeguards. Finally, we acknowledge that model performance varies with evaluation protocols. This report only serves as a preliminary exploration of the current state of LALMs.

Building a Taiwanese Mandarin Spoken Language Model: A First Attempt

This technical report presents our initial attempt to build a spoken large language model (LLM) for Taiwanese Mandarin, specifically tailored to enable real-time, speech-to-speech interaction in multi-turn conversations. Our end-to-end model incorporates a decoder-only transformer architecture and aims to achieve seamless interaction while preserving the conversational flow, including full-duplex capabilities allowing simultaneous speaking and listening. The paper also details the training process, including data preparation with synthesized dialogues and adjustments for real-time interaction. We also developed a platform to evaluate conversational fluency and response coherence in multi-turn dialogues. We hope the release of the report can contribute to the future development of spoken LLMs in Taiwanese Mandarin.

Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2: A Collaboratively Expanding Benchmark for Measuring the Capabilities of Spoken Language Models with 180 Tasks

Multimodal foundation models, such as Gemini and ChatGPT, have revolutionized human-machine interactions by seamlessly integrating various forms of data. Developing a universal spoken language model that comprehends a wide range of natural language instructions is critical for bridging communication gaps and facilitating more intuitive interactions. However, the absence of a comprehensive evaluation benchmark poses a significant challenge. We present Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2, an open and evolving benchmark for the comprehensive evaluation of instruction-based universal speech models. Building upon the first generation, this second version incorporates 125 new tasks contributed collaboratively by the global research community, expanding the benchmark to a total of 180 tasks, making it the largest benchmark for speech and audio evaluation. While the first generation of Dynamic-SUPERB was limited to classification tasks, Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2 broadens its evaluation capabilities by introducing a wide array of novel and diverse tasks, including regression and sequence generation, across speech, music, and environmental audio. Evaluation results show that no model performed well universally. SALMONN-13B excelled in English ASR and Qwen2-Audio-7B-Instruct showed high accuracy in emotion recognition, but current models still require further innovations to handle a broader range of tasks. We open-source all task data and the evaluation pipeline at https://github.com/dynamic-superb/dynamic-superb.

AND: Audio Network Dissection for Interpreting Deep Acoustic Models

Neuron-level interpretations aim to explain network behaviors and properties by investigating neurons responsive to specific perceptual or structural input patterns. Although there is emerging work in the vision and language domains, none is explored for acoustic models. To bridge the gap, we introduce $\textit{AND}$, the first $\textbf{A}$udio $\textbf{N}$etwork $\textbf{D}$issection framework that automatically establishes natural language explanations of acoustic neurons based on highly-responsive audio. $\textit{AND}$ features the use of LLMs to summarize mutual acoustic features and identities among audio. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify $\textit{AND}$'s precise and informative descriptions. In addition, we demonstrate a potential use of $\textit{AND}$ for audio machine unlearning by conducting concept-specific pruning based on the generated descriptions. Finally, we highlight two acoustic model behaviors with analysis by $\textit{AND}$: (i) models discriminate audio with a combination of basic acoustic features rather than high-level abstract concepts; (ii) training strategies affect model behaviors and neuron interpretability -- supervised training guides neurons to gradually narrow their attention, while self-supervised learning encourages neurons to be polysemantic for exploring high-level features.

Generating Attractive and Authentic Copywriting from Customer Reviews

The goal of product copywriting is to capture the interest of potential buyers by emphasizing the features of products through text descriptions. As e-commerce platforms offer a wide range of services, it's becoming essential to dynamically adjust the styles of these auto-generated descriptions. Typical approaches to copywriting generation often rely solely on specified product attributes, which may result in dull and repetitive content. To tackle this issue, we propose to generate copywriting based on customer reviews, as they provide firsthand practical experiences with products, offering a richer source of information than just product attributes. We have developed a sequence-to-sequence framework, enhanced with reinforcement learning, to produce copywriting that is attractive, authentic, and rich in information. Our framework outperforms all existing baseline and zero-shot large language models, including LLaMA-2-chat-7B and GPT-3.5, in terms of both attractiveness and faithfulness. Furthermore, this work features the use of LLMs for aspect-based summaries collection and argument allure assessment. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of using LLMs for marketing domain corpus construction. The code and the dataset is publicly available at: https://github.com/YuXiangLin1234/Copywriting-Generation.

Complex Scalar Dark Matter in G2HDM

The complex scalar dark matter (DM) candidate in the gauged two Higgs doublet model (G2HDM), stabilized by a peculiar hidden parity ($h$-parity), is studied in detail. We explore the parameter space for the DM candidate by taking into account the most recent DM constraints from various experiments, in particular, the PLANCK relic density measurement and the current DM direct detection limit from XENON1T. We separate our analysis in three possible compositions for the mixing of the complex scalar. We first constrain our parameter space with the vacuum stability and perturbative unitarity conditions for the scalar potential, LHC Higgs measurements, plus Drell-Yan and electroweak precision test constraints on the gauge sector. We find that DM dominated by composition of the inert doublet scalar is completely excluded by further combining the previous constraints with both the latest results from PLANCK and XENON1T. We also demonstrate that the remaining parameter space with two other DM compositions can be further tested by indirect detection like the future CTA gamma-ray telescope.

Pair Production of Higgs Boson in G2HDM at the LHC

Pair production of Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is known to be important for the determination of Higgs boson self-coupling and the probe of new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM), especially the existence of new fundamental scalar boson. In this paper we study in detail the Higgs pair production at the LHC in a well-motivated model, the Gauged Two Higgs Doublet Model (G2HDM) in which the two Higgs doublets are properly embedded into a gauged $SU(2)_H$ and a dark matter candidate emerges naturally due to the gauge symmetry. Besides the deviations of Higgs couplings from the SM predictions, the existence of new scalars could enhance the production cross section of Higgs boson pair at the LHC significantly. However, when we take into account the relic density of dark matter and the null result in its direct search, only moderate enhancement can be maintained. We also comment on the capability of distinguishing the signal of a new generic scalar from the SM at the LHC, assuming the Higgs pair production cross sections are the same.

Boosted Higgs-pair production associated with large $E_T^{miss}$: a signal of $Z^\prime$

Non-resonant production of Higgs-pair via heavy intermediate states may be a distinctive signature for extended discrete symmetries when accompaied by large missing transvers energy. We discuss $T$-parity as an example of such symmetry within the Littlest Higgs Model, where a new heavy gauge boson $Z'$, the $T$-odd partner of SM $Z$-boson, predominately decays into to a Higgs boson and a dark matter candidate $χ$. In essence, $T$-parity stablises simultaneously both the Higgs mass and the dark matter. Production via $pp\rightarrow Z' Z'\rightarrow 2h 2χ$ may therefore yield important clues about symmetries connecting the Higgs and dark sectors. This paper makes a case for the search for this channel at the LHC by studying its discovery potential. It is demonstrated that in situations where a large $Z'-χ$ mass gap results in a boosted topology, the jet-substructure technique can be leveraged to reach the required significance for discovery in the $2h\rightarrow 2\gamma2b$ decay mode.

Top Quark Rare Decays via Loop-Induced FCNC Interactions in Extended Mirror Fermion Model

Flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions for a top quark $t$ decays into $Xq$ with $X$ represents a neutral gauge or Higgs boson, and $q$ a up- or charm-quark are highly suppressed in the Standard Model (SM) due to the Glashow-Iliopoulos-Miami mechanism. Whilst current limits on the branching ratios of these processes have been established at the order of $10^{-4}$ from the Large Hadron Collider experiments, SM predictions are at least nine orders of magnitude below. In this work, we study some of these FCNC processes in the context of an extended mirror fermion model, originally proposed to implement the electroweak scale seesaw mechanism for non-sterile right-handed neutrinos. We show that one can probe the process $t \to Zc$ for a wide range of parameter space with branching ratios varying from $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-8}$, comparable with various new physics models including the general two Higgs doublet model with or without flavor violations at tree level, minimal supersymmetric standard model with or without $R$-parity, and extra dimension model.
